Magically Fixing Big Slow Excel files with a single click

is your file size suddenly gone massive or your files suddenly working slowly have you heard of inquire it's a add-in built into Excel you click a button it fixes your problem I'll show you how it works let's go so let me show you how it works I've got a file here with some excess formatting I've highlighted this entire row and all these rows and change the size and done a few little bits and pieces I'm going to go to the inquire add-in and I'm going to go to the clean excess cell formatting okay I click that it says do you want to apply it to all sheets I do would you like to save your changes I'll say no for now but there we go all the excess formatting gone it basically Works off the bottom right cell you've got some data in and clears out everything else even this column that I had conditional formatting in okay it's now if I go to the home conditional formatting manage rules I had applied it to the entire column and now it's only applying to h18 okay which is the bottom cell now that might be what you want it might not but if you're cleaning up a big file this can be a glorious thing to do okay let me talk about inquire Under The Help menu okay once you've added this in and I'll show you how to add it in a second and I'll put links in the notes below there's all sorts of useful stuff you can actually compare worksheets to each other there's all sorts of other goodies you can analyze the workbook um I ran it on a really big workbook earlier check this out yes that is a lot of formulas in there um okay and then you can do all sorts of good stuff but really the main one link sheets all those sorts of things but the one I really like is the XSL formatting and you can click on learn more and there's a bit more detail about it so it does only exist in certain versions of excel let me bring up the page and it says here it needs Professional Plus so Office Pro Plus and Microsoft 365 Apps for business or for Enterprise Edition sorry so if you haven't got those and you won't find this but otherwise this is where you go and I'll come back and clean this one up just to finish off we go to file options add-ins and go to com add-ins and click go okay and you'll find it's in here okay there's inquire okay and that's really all there is to it like check this out I've got all sorts going on here check out the conditional formatting manage rules to the worksheet look there's all sorts of broken and repeating labels and stuff I'm going to go to inquire or I've also got all these columns and stuff are formatted all the way across some of this stuff is all formatted in weird ways going all the way down the sheet and I've got a second sheet with similar stuff and a third sheet with similar stuff okay so we're just gonna go to inquire clean excess cell formatting or sheets and it runs and it might take five seconds it might take a minute depending on you know the severity and the size of your workbook um and then it'll ask you if you want to save it but I'll say no for now but look all the excess formatting gone from the sides there and from underneath the conditional formatting okay home conditional formatting manage rules from the worksheet okay it hasn't cleaned everything up okay it hasn't cleaned up the the range that still exists but it has got rid of the extra stuff so your workbook will work quicker because that was applying to all the rows um this sheet same idea it's all cleaned up to the right and if I scroll down underneath and the same idea here okay so it doesn't get rid of your formatting see all the formatting so here gets rid of the excess stuff to the right and Below of your last cell well look I've used it in the past it's massively sped up spreadsheets with a click of a button and makes the files a lot smaller as well potentially if you've got unused columns and rows so there we go have you used inquire did you know about it let me know in the comments and I'll catch you later [Music]
