and I am the oldest one here no you're not you just looking oh mama there something I need real bad but it can wait a vocal Powerhouse a multi-talented actress and a woman who Rose above life's challenges are all the ways you can describe Mabel King making her Mark as Mabel Thomas on the sitcom what's happening she's an undeniable pleasure for black TV unfortunately Mabel's radiant career was eclipsed by the challenges of life from losing all her limbs to diabetes to enduring the heartbreaking tragedy of losing her only son to drug addiction and having no one to lean on but the King of Pop Michael Jackson this is why Mabel King's life was triumphant but tragic on Christmas Day 1932 Rosal Lee and Joseph Washington welcomed their baby girl Mabel Elizabeth Washington in Charleston South Carolina however the family eventually moved to New York and Mabel was raised on the streets of Harlem as she Grew Older she eventually found her calling as a gospel singer yeah you heard that right Mabel was a singer before she was an actress and man did she have some killer vocals in fact why don't you listen to this your hands and St your Fe your [Music] hands as for the acting bit Mabel didn't step foot in the industry until her mid-30s now most actors start young in the business bagging roles in their teens so given Mabel's age start a almost seemed out of the cards for her but she had already made a name for herself as a singer and you're forgetting something important she was born to be a star she bagged her first role as Maria in the National touring play of porgi and Bess in 1966 word of her remarkable performance got around and the roles came knocking at her front door she lit up the stage in the Broadway musical Hello Dolly the following year in 1972 Mabel went on to star in the musical film don't play us cheap and in the horror film film ganja and Hess however the crown jewel of Mabel's acting career was her performance as the Wicked Witch of the West evilene in the Broadway musical The Whiz and get this she starred alongside Michael Jackson of all people you'd think the King of Pop would have stolen her Thunder but no King claimed a spotlight for herself and was even nominated for a Drama Desk award for her role in the musical safe to say The Whiz put her on the map you get smart with me and I'll send you back to your cages now get Dorothy and don't damage those Silver Slippers a year later she found herself in a room with the directors of what's Happening where she took on the role of Mabel Thomas a hardworking maid looking after her kids but Mabel left the show after only two seasons and no it was not because it was her time to be written off or she had a better project to hop on to no sir she had some serious beef with the director co-actor Ernest Lee Thomas who played Mabel's son on the show Raj spilled the beans about what went down between the late actress and the directors in an interview and apparently it wasn't pretty this is a miracle we even have a show you know and your old ass should come in there and say hey guys hey hang in there God bless you or something but it was the arrogance M wanted something more for her character don't get her wrong she was killing it as a single black mother but she wanted to capitalize on the show's popularity and shoot even higher by presenting a strong black family on television basically she wanted the directors to give her a husband on the show but the directors weren't having it and so Mabel being Mabel created some trouble on set she would change the script on her own because in her eyes the lack of Positive Black role models on screen was one of the biggest tragedies on television whoo wow $2 for a movie no it's a dollar for the movie 50 cents for the candy bar and 50 cents for the large soda mhm but you can get the 50 Cent bar candy you're on the way to the movies for a dime and then you can drink water if you get thirsty and here ultimately she eventually grew tired of budding heads with the directors and chose to walk away from the show in 1978 mind you she knew that the show was gaining popularity she could have bagged a bigger check down the line if she had stayed but she valued her integrity and her vision over the greens speaking on the issue Thomas said people have to do what they have to do at the moment he probably wasn't too happy about Mabel walking away from the show because when the actor first found out that King was playing his mom he was over the moon he had gone to see her Broadway performance in The Whiz about 15 times now that's a fanboy I went to see her on Broadway in The Whiz about 15 times says Thomas I loved that musical who knew that she'd end up playing my mother I was in awe but that was just who Mabel was unlike the other skinny black actresses who stared themselves for the perfect body Mabel did not care about adhering to society standards of femininity during an interview with the late '70s Jet Magazine King was asked to choose between food and you know what in the bedroom and she said that she'd always choose food why because it would last longer and it would fill me up finally an actress that we can all relate to following her exit from what's Happening King reprised her role as the Wicked Witch of the West again for the 1978 film version of the [Music] musical a year later she starred alongside actor Steve Martin in the movie The Jerk she continued her acting career with guest appearances in different television series including Tales from the Dark Side Amazing Stories and The Jeffersons around this time she signed on with Hollywood agent Ruben malaret who helped her return to the screen once more in the 1984 The Jerk 2 at this point there was no stopping Mabel Hollywood was hers for the taking she went on to Star alongside Bill Murray in the 1988 film Scrooged and then dead men don't die in 1990 along with Elliot [Music] Gould unfortunately that was would be the last time that fans would see Mabel on the screen type 2 diabetes proved to be the silent killer of King's acting career forcing her to take her final bow far sooner than she should have in 1968 she had her toe removed owing to complications from the disease things only got worse for her in 1989 Mabel suffered a stroke leaving her partially paralyzed and speechless for about a year despite medical intervention Mabel's condition only deteriorated forcing doctors to amputate both of her legs according to reports King also lost one of her arms to diabetes safe to say this was a very dark chapter in Mabel's life thankfully she had a few good ones in her Corner including the likes of Michael Jackson yes the King of Pop himself gave King a shoulder to lean on during her difficult time he pulled some strings that allowed Mabel to stay at the motion picture and television Hospital a place she'd come to call home for several years however there had been whispers about an ambulance dropping hering during transport leaving her severely injured and forcing mpch to take her in to avoid a lawsuit sadly life didn't let Mabel catch a breather after she was diagnosed with a disease she lost her only son Larry King to liver ceros he had been battling his Demons of drug addiction one of the last things he did was conning Mabel out of 50 bucks hopefully Mabel had better memories to look back on and if you're wondering about her husband he got out of the picture long ago Mabel t the knot with Melvin King in June 1967 only for them to go their separate ways in September 1989 she then crossed paths with American R&B singer Larry Banks and welcomed Larry Jr into the world in 1996 Larry's death proved to be the last straw for Mabel some people think that the loss of her only son might have caused Mabel to lose her own will to live but don't no one commit suicide to get to where I'm at she says wait your turn to exit by letting them lift you oh yeah you're being monitor would you tell the world you're better than silia she says however once again her friends proved to be the light in her life they arranged a benefit for her collecting enough money for a new wheelchair and breathing new life into a defeated King unfortunately her health did not improve a few years down the line she almost died during hip replacement surgery there have also been unconfirmed reports of her falling out of a wheelchair and losing her front teeth in the end Mabel's disease got the best of her she eventually died at the young age of 66 on November 9th 1999 while she was staying at the exhibit Court her funeral was attended by family and friends including her mother Rosal Lee Washington Sister Rose Washington and Michael Jackson himself According to some reports Mabel was worth $250,000 at the time of her death While others state that she had 1 to5 Mill million dollars in her bank account before her passing at the end of the day Mabel's life is not defined by her losses but by her triumphs both as an actor and as a singer so wipe your tears and maybe go watch The Whiz again
