that great performance M83 is always such a treat to see live and to have that person concert just for kexp thank you so much thank you Cheryl and and thank you for for the support throughout so many years and since the beginning really so really appreciate it thank you it's kind of wild to think how long we've known each other and that means that's how long you've been making music and what a journey that it's been for you and each time you create something new whether it's with a soundtrack with your brother or on other films or you do these beauti instrumental albums and the M83 stuff it's just such a treat to see what comes out of that creative mind of yours thank you I'm doing my best well fantasy is the new album and you promised big drums big guitars big S and big vocals and boy did you deliver on this one and the album's Fantastic the live performance incredible and you said the idea behind the album was to create something that transl translated well live can you talk about how you went into the making of this one that was a little bit different than anything you'd done before yeah I really share the the writing of this album with uh two very important persons uh Justin medal Johnson who's my producer uh for more than 10 years now uh we started to work together on Rew dreaming and uh so he produced this album and we coite co-wrote uh this album with Joe Berry and Justin so three people and then so we gathered in a room for one year pretty much every day making music and making something new um every day and uh we gathered a lot of ideas and um and then we turned um this ideas into into an album uh with the idea of of uh the life performance really um how does it feel creating something in conjunction and collaboration with other people when you've done it so long in such a solitary way and I imagine when you do soundtracks is that a solitary in it's never really uh only me you know it's it's always a team of people and and thank God I have a team of people working with me because otherwise I would I would I wouldn't have done what I've done in the past because I'm a I'm a creative mind and I'm very messy and and and I need the structure of a of a team around me to to uh to work really well speaking of a team the band that you have with you is just so incredible and you can just tell how in sync you are it's a real beautiful relationship that you've created with these musicians it must be wonderful to be out on tour and playing these songs together I'm extremely lucky two of them extremely lucky two of my crew as well um um we all get along very well um they all very professional very good at what they do and the band yeah it's um started this relationship with uh Kayla and Joe on the last tour on junk um and then we added this three kids from France um uh they play in a in a band called Bri which means nose in in English and um yeah I feel like adding this three members in the band uh was probably the best idea I had in yours they really add something um spontaneous and and magical to the to the to the recipe so I'm I'm glad well there is just such an intense feeling lots of feelings exhibited in fantasy I feel like there's a glorious electricity that just runs through the whole album and listening to the record and again just listening to that live today I just close my eyes and I lose myself in it and it reminds me how important it it is in life to savor these moments that we have and just these jolts to the system that remind us that there we're alive and music your music does that to me in such an incredible way and I'm wondering if the making of This Record was a rejuvenating process for you um it's a way for me to uh to get back to my younger years and and and remembering my teenage years and and it's uh music for me is a way to stay young really it's uh it helps me to um to be creative and and um so definitely yes it was a um a process that that that helped me achieve that well I know as an artist you're probably always looking forward but since you mentioned that the idea of nostalgia and music is nothing new to you and I think that's part of why your music resonates so deeply with people and I read that you spent a lot of time during the pandemic watch in Old films which I know you've always done and that you love to do but did this routine of surrounding yourself with something so familiar to you during uncertain times support you during that time and did it influence fantasy in any way do you think definitely um but I feel like the the theme of my albums is always the same it's always Nostalgia and remembering and and uh so I feel like I'm I'm I'm boring people with always bringing up the the same themes but that's that's what I love I I love watching old movies I love listening to old music and and um I I get from the past um something that helps me um move forward which uh which is necessary so yes the the the the memories and and the past are are really important things to me well each new album sounds different so if you're mining your past you're definitely doing it in different and interesting ways with each new record and I hear touchstones from many of your previous records in fantasy and what about this record connects you back to your roots do you feel um much more guitars uh big drums um yeah this like 90s feel to that album is is also U something that that was more present in my early years of my career um on on the album like before the down Wheels us for instance and and Saturdays equal you so there's a bit of that but um definitely more vocals than the the early years of M83 so it's it's a combination of allies and and new things so yeah I'm trying to trying to stay current in this uh music um um system is is is really difficult but um but trying to be honest with what I do is is uh important to me and I think I I I achieved that with fantasy one of the things that I admire since you bring that up is that you do take time between albums and I think you do that partially for yourself and also for the listener as well and we can we have a lot of music of yours to go back and enjoy while we wait for the next thing but I like that you are pacing yourself to for longevity and you know mental mental health and physical health I know that after living in LA for quite a few years that you've spent quite a bit of time this past year in France connecting with family and friends and just playing music not necessarily for the sake of making a record and again you've talked about the benefits in interviews about taking time off for yourself and I'm wondering what that change of pace has taught you about yourself well first of all it's it's very difficult for me to to see myself like doing an interview with you Cher cherl is is is Extreme uh it's not comfortable I I don't like to see my face on the internet I don't like to see photos or videos of me so it's it's uh this is also one of the reason why I I I don't put out albums every year it's because I I'm scared to bore people and and I don't it's almost I don't want to impose there's so much music out there um so many albums coming out every week and and I feel like this AB abundance of of um music is is almost killing the industry and and I feel bad being part of that in a way um this is why I Tred to Pace myself and and and I'm French I'm a little lazy too you know I I love to to spend my time with my family my friends and watching films and and doing all the things than than music it's important I must be a little French then too okay good well you've said that you believe fantasy is the beginning of next chapter in your career what are you looking forward to um multiple things I I I want to create more I want to be more um um working with other people as well I created this label um auth Sons um which fantasy is actually the first release uh for so I I want to help younger artists to um to release good music I want to be producing maybe other bands as well and and really focus on that label um and I'd love to do more movie soundtracks as well um working with my brother is it was a very um uh fascinating experience and um so I really want to do that more also well I can't wait to see what you do next and absolutely loving the album fantasy we appreciate you bringing your band and your team
