Lucy: OT, Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit

so my name is lucy i'm an occupational therapist on gray ferris ward which is an pcu a psychiatric intensive care unit so i work amongst the team and engagement activity and physical health team and i'm the ot on the ward as an occupational therapist working on a picu i use activity and meaningful occupation as a way of assessing someone's level of functioning providing structure and routine we also use activities to de-escalate people to use it as relaxation techniques and for rehabilitation during someone's acute stage of their illness i love seeing um patients kind of at their most acute stage sort of recovering and engage in what might be a really basic activity but to them it's um something that means so much like washing their hair or having a shower or making some food being an occupational therapist you're able to look at someone holistically so we're able to see the physical health side of it the mental health side and how that's sort of affecting their roles their routines and then we're able to be a bit creative and find activities and engagement that will help sort of build up that deficit that they've had due to their mental illness
