hello and welcome to today's episode of rest of that garage hey today I've got a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 that I just recently picked up from a friend of mine this little pickup is uh as you can see extended cab two-wheel drive I paid by three and four thousand dollars for this truck and it's in pretty decent shape for what it is now it's got over 200 000 miles on it but it's the overall runs out and drives very nicely this truck has the four tech engine in it most people call the LS engine uh which it makes a very nice platform to do some performance upgrades which I plan to do later on with this truck I'll do a little walk around this truck here and show you various things about it that need repair and some of the things I like about the truck all right as you can see here in this truck it's got leather interior in 2006 uh that was pretty pretty good upgrade there it's got the uh Bose stereo system in it and it has a factory sunroof which is pretty rare I don't know how many of these trucks had the factory sunroof but this one certainly does the red stitching in the leather I don't remember seeing one with the red stitching but it looks nice now you can see this bottom seat cushion here needs to be replaced and I will be doing that and showing you how I do that here in today's video like I said it's a 2006 and these are known as the cat eye truck and the reason they I guess you call them a cat eye is you can see the uh the slanted eyes here yeah the interior is very nice in this truck the door panels are just in fantastic condition like I said the Bose stereo system in it cruise control tilt wheel it's on uh climate control in it console overall pretty nice here uh the seat cover needs to be replaced and I have a new one so I'll be replacing that one okay we've got the uh 5.3 liter engine here yeah right there you can see it there 228 000 miles on it a lot of miles but but no unusual sounds a lot of these have a piston slap noise when they're cold this one does not it's very quiet and runs out really good all right and in the glove box you have the option code list here I really wanted to know about was the G80 which is a limited slip rear differential for the engine lm7 so this would be an lm7 with an m30 trans and add the operator's manual in the warranty book also in there and you can see the Dual Zone heater control and AMF and radio with CD and cassette and the trim around the tailgate uh it's in the glove box there looks like we can use a double stick trim adhesive and reattach that and it is the LT model which we used to call the luxury touring Edition all right so we're gonna show you how to replace this seat cover here with YouTube videos on it and basically remove the whole seat out of the vehicle I did not do that enough um okay we got the seat back together cover installed and installed in the truck and looks pretty good I'm really happy with the outcome next we're going to replace the headlights the turn signals the tail lights and realign the front bumper on the truck and straighten some bit brackets okay as you can see here in the front bumper on this truck is a little great big gap here sticking out over here oh I don't know two inches or so and it's actually in over here that's centered and then tighten these gaps up here here and also notice that I got a turn signal lens here that's broken I'm going to replace that and I'll pull these obviously here here and say 15 millimeter get the top one get one here and one there and spin it around that we're going to give it a try here and uh I'm gonna put these lights in here in the old Silverado and install it pretty easy here so these are one of the nice ones uh that was a little tight for the new before I get that far what not because it was in pretty pretty wrapped shape uneven colored and stuff and I used uh Martin senior under hood black paint foreign we're going to install a four six drop kit four inches in the front and six inches in the rear and the way we're gonna do the four inches up front there's several ways you could do it there's a upper lower control arms that you can buy but what we're going to do is we're going to put two inch drop spindles here which uh this uh where your bearing Mount is is two inches up higher than than stock and then we're going to cut the coil spring one coil off the coil spring equals two inches now a lot of people will say oh you can't cut coils yes you can cut coils it's not something you can't do that coil has no clue how long it is uh but we'll be removing the the outer tie rod in the sway bar and Link uh disconnect our upper ball joint our lower ball joint the caliper Mount and the caliper off here we'll probably be replacing the brake rotors on it too looks like the pads are pretty good I did check my uh upper and uh lower ball joints earlier for uh playing them they appear to be really good condition are bushings in our upper control arms are good the lower control arm bushings are are good I see no reason to replace those my thought on the uh the control arms and and some of the odm components are these are OE classifier parts that uh last a very long time in a very high quality when you go buy a other parts from China whatever they're not built to the same standard as the OE yeah they'll be fine when they're new but they won't last as long as the Le so there's nothing wrong with reusing the OE if they're in good condition but you do know how need to know how to check them so we're going to get started here and we'll take our caliper off here okay when you set a caliper up here like I just did got to be very careful because that caliper can fall and it's going to yank your hose and break your hose uh you don't want to do that obviously uh a lot of times you'll tie them up with a bungee cord or something like that but off comes the caliper bracket and you see this plastic here this is for the aftermarket wheel hub Sentry adapter I guess you call it anyways uh I'll be getting rid of that because I'm going to swap out wheels and tires on this truck [Music] have ABS brakes you can see there yeah it was suspension on this track is very dirty my grandson used a truck to haul his motorcycle up in the hills and up on some ground Road there so got a lot of mud and dirt stuck to it but foreign [Music] before I break the ball joints loose is put the nut back on a little ways now these later model trucks do not have Castle nuts with a cotter pin on them so they use a Loctite or locking nut and so you want to run those all the way off um and then run them back up with your fingers a little bit before you knock the ball joint loose because once that taper starts spinning in that spindle if you don't knock it if you don't pull it all the way out there it'll start spinning to make it really difficult to get the nut off there so it's always a good idea to back it off all the way and put it on a few threads with your fingers good way to take some skin off the knuckle thank you you know what things you're looking for on the ball joint is do you have any up and down play this way or any side to side got nothing and this one is also very nice and tight I don't see any reason to replace them when I say OEM original equipment manufacturer uh the testing standards that they have to live up to for the OE for the original equipment is much greater than anything you'll buy in the aftermarket that's why a lot of times you replace an aftermarket part you know and down the road it's wore out and you're replacing again or it fails and you don't know why well they're not required to do the testing that the parts manufacturers have to do to supply it to General Motors so my opinion uh you're better off to run these if they're good if they're wore out absolutely replace them okay Enter spring back in there and we're going to put our drop spindle here on kxa a two inch drop spindle here we've got their taper and a threaded holes here for our ABS line and whatnot so what's up here with that started yeah can find it and there it is a little more when I say this is a tapered seat here and it's the only thing that keeps the ball joint from spinning when you're trying to tighten it up sometimes you gotta take and pull the little to keep the uh instead of the ball deck from spinning and the spindle where you're tightening up let me just take a bar here pry down on it and that gets it into the tapered seat into the spindle and which will hopefully stop it from spinning actually not left-handed I want to get her done all right and we'll take a look here make sure we're not getting anything all right okay one of the things that's totally different here on the spindle is because the bearing is located two inches higher than it was on the original spindle this bolt must go in before you put the ball joint down into the spindle so you'll want to put the bolt in tighten it up for your bearing before you put the upper ball joint into the spindle there it'll save you a little time yesterday I completed the uh drop dropped it to four inches and we're doing the six inch chin to drop back here I got a kit from a flip kit off of Amazon for the rear drop spindles for the front of it but I'm going to show you how how I installed this rear flip kit here so one of the uh big things is on the left side here this bolt right here 24 millimeter uh goes through and hits the gas tank you can't take it out so because you could if you remove the gas tank but I'm not going to do that but because you can't push the bolt through without removing the gas tank you can't remove the leaf spring and normally you remove the leaf spring and put it on the lower side of the axle uh what I'm going to do is pull the two bolts back here at the rear spring hanger that will allow the uh the spring to swing out enough to drop past that bracket and then we will be pulling pulling our u-bolts here from the differential and we'll already have the spring out from the other side and we'll be able to slide the differential over and it'll come back over the top of the spring because I'll have the spring stretched over as far as I can and drop it down and so that's the way I plan on doing this without removing the fuel tank here now another problem that you run into on these is that you have to lower the trailer hitch or remove it because the bolts again will not pass because they hit the trailer hitch right there so they had to lower the hitch so I've already removed the rear spring these bolts back here were 21 millimeter and that was 24 up there and I got the spring here on the ground now and this will be going on the bottom side of the axle yeah with our flip kit there will require replacement rear shocks be removing the bump stop for right now but I do have a sea Notch kit to notch the frame but I chose to do the flip kit first and then do the C Notch when you lower it this much the axle wants to move backwards because it's swinging on an arc however the new brackets bring it back to its original position are very close to it so once I get the the everything mounted back up then I can locate the exact spot to put the c c Notch kit in it and then I'll do that at that time yesterday I picked up some 20 inch wheels gentlemen had them advertised on Facebook Marketplace for twelve hundred dollars and we worked out a deal bought these uh 275 45 20 is the tire size which is exactly the size of tire that I was looking for on this truck I think they fit these uh old cat eye trucks very well okay you can see on the new brackets the hole here for your spring locating pin is off center normally they're in the center because you're dropping it down six inches it's a pretty good Arc they offset that to compensate for it to keep it centered in the wheel well okay see I got the sea Notch plate in in here and I had to drill uh half inch holes here eight of them total there is a brace in the back here where the bump stop was uh that you have to remove um these bolts are countersucked into the boxed frame area so they're a little bit difficult to put in I put the bolts facing outwards on those two just because it's a lot easier to start the nuts if I'd had a helper here and could have done it fairly easy but it did not have a helper now you can see I've seen some guys say that this C Notch needs to be centered within this brace but that really doesn't work out what you want is the front of it to be right here at the edge of that weld where I've got this one so it fits in there nicely there strengthwise uh you know I I'm not planning on towing with this saying uh any real heavy loads anyways and I'm not overly impressed by these kits but it does work and we'll see how it does over the next couple of years here but I think it'll be just fine and I sold this set of wheels and tires on Marketplace for 250 dollars well I bought this truck and had this stripe on here all the way down the length of the truck but it was missing pieces in it was very poor shape but I still have the rest of the stripe to remove and I'm going to show you how I do that yeah I'll give you a little close-up of the stripe and it really is glued on there good it's a it's a factory decal I believe or these are installed very least but uh I kind of like the Silverado back here with the bow tie but I can't really save that but I'm going to remove that and then then polish this panel here okay what I'm using is this uh eraser made by 3M it's it's made for removing decals and stripes and it'll do a really wide stripe and whatnot but one of the things you want to do is the rotation rotate it into whatever it is you're cutting as it comes down and you don't need to go fast you'll burn it up if you go fast [Applause] and you can see here it's removing it quite well [Applause] and I I removed this stripe on other parts of the truck without using this and it was a royal pain I finally got this eraser and works very well wipe that all off of there and you can still see a little dull spot there where the the stripe was but uh overall pretty good okay I'm gonna do a little cutting the bump in here and starting out with this wool pad and we'll see if we can't get some of that shine back from this thing you can easily burn through the paint [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] right now I'm running about 1200 RPM it is a very built variable speed buffer it's a little Bauer that got from Harbor Freight I had a Makita that I paid like 300 bucks for and it didn't last six months so this has been a very good uh buffer I highly recommend them even though it did come from hobo Freight and I'm using the McGuire's uh number four heavy cut cleaner [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] Stripes off of it and then I buffed it with a wool pad with a heavy cut cleaner and then came behind with a foam polishing pad and Polished it with that and then used a final pad with a swirl mark remover in it and did pretty good job for this old paint in the old truck I think it shines pretty well I am planning to remove these moldings down here on the door and in the while the two doors I guess uh then I will polish the bottom down there I have not done that yet and try to make it uh a little shinier a little more presentable but overall it's coming up pretty good all right we gotta plan plastic scraper here we're using to to get this off in here and we're heating it up pretty good and it's plastic Don't Spray scrape the paint so it's pretty safe to use however if you have a truck that's been repainted and the paint's not adhered to the the old paint very good it will take the paint off and then you've got a huge problem so you want to be really careful uh if you plan to do a little testing before you remove the side trim because you may find out that it's going to take the paint off with it so I want to be real careful on that now I didn't use as much heat here and created a lot of extra work for myself so we'll see how this comes off there but [Music] not very easy so I got it all buffed out and got the moldings removed and the four six drop kit installed and the truck is looking pretty good I still got to take it in and get a front end alignment done on it and have everything checked out should be all good and then then we're going to be taking it to the Woodburn drag strip for our little drag racing action well I took the truck to my daughter and son a lot professional Tire in McMinnville for the front end alignment and the camera was way out as expected but they were able to get it in alignment and uh everything looked really well I then took the truck on a Thousand Mile Road Trip to Redding California the cool April nights car show also I found that the AC was not working and what I did find was the belt was off uh I reinstalled the belt and the AC seems to be working fine we'll see how that works all the way down there 80 miles an hour and running smooth our next stop was the Woodburn drag strip for the Thursday night Dragon race my grandson Logan and my grandson Dante neither one of them had ever drag raced so we decided that we would do the Thursday night drag race and they could uh learn the tree and make some practice runs on a Thursday night you can make as many runs as you want we took the Silverado and the Ford Bronco so they could compete against one another and they were both pretty equal one ran a 16.07 and the other end is 16.10 however the Bronco did run a little faster time when we wound it up thank you so much [Applause] [Applause] okay you're gonna get your ticket out of the shack right here that kids can even take a ticket thank you sir did a rubbing right here 16 26 and 86 miles an hour he's got a twin brother named Trevor Jasmine Jesse Yeah [Applause] oh that's close all right you can roll your window up and go for it bro [Music] Bronco pulls hard in the mid-range thank you when you turn [Music] your car 822 who won Logan well my grandsons and I had a great time at Woodburn dragstrip racing the truck and I also had a good time lowering the truck and polishing up and I think it looks a lot better uh not a lot of money uh for a pretty cool little truck a lot of fun to drive uh get a lot of thumbs up with it well I hope you enjoyed today's video and we'll catch you next time at Rusty
