good morning this is the judge speaking and we have to start with some from out this year and the first thing is what is your whole thing my full name is Louis Anthony Rossman what is she Ansem birth my date of birth is November 19th 1988 19 what did you say now 1988 1988 what is your address um what is your work are you doing for anything why we do here for a living is we do data recovery on Apple products and repair of liquid damaged apple products of technical electronics repair of apple products before you get your statement you have to give him affirmation and then I tell you you have been asked or something to do evidence before the court we're giving evidence you are required by the law to tell the truth and nothing but the truth you also require to give information which you know this or maybe you relevant to the case even if you're not asked about it it's a criminal offence to intentionally give false evidence or make a false statement before the court of law before you give evidence you are required to give an affirmation which is the promise that you will comply if what I just told you so I will now ask you a question you affirm that you will tell the truth and nothing but the truth and not concede anything of relevance to the case and then please repeat after me I do so affirm upon my honor and conscience I do so a firm upon my honor and conscience thank you very much you know getting questions from the two lovers and maybe the court have some questions as well so we stop until you get back to me yes your honor okay thank you yeah yeah Grossman can you first tell the court about your business for how long have you had this business I've had this business now for about ten years so since the end of 2008 ten years and can you tell why is there a need for a business like you or and similar the need for businesses like ours and similar is to fulfill a niche that Apple will not fulfill when it comes to out of warranty products liquid damaged products physically damaged products and above all data recovery which is the service that Apple does not offer can you please repeat and take it slowly so we can answer our business exists to fulfill the niche of repairing liquid damage MacBooks physically damaged products out of warranty products and to provide data recovery services which are services that Apple does not provide so when a device is physically damaged out of warranty or liquid damaged Apple will sometimes not service it or they will service it at a price that is very close to what it would cost to purchase a new one and in some cases more than what it would cost to purchase a new one so our business services the customers that do not want to pay more than three thirteen hundred dollars to repair a computer that is not worth more than let's say nine hundred dollars and our business exists also to offer data recovery services to people who would like the data back from their damaged Apple products but why doesn't happen do many of these repair I can only speculate as to why that is the case but I would imagine it is because it is either not as profitable or that is not their main interest their main interest is going to be selling another one or doing flat rate repairs where if your machine has been physically your liquid damaged in some way they replace large swaths of the device so if you have been spin in a screen cable they may replace the entire top case the motherboard and the display when all you may need is a replacement screen cable as can be seen in the cbc news canada piece that was released last October they don't want to do the nitty gritty of figuring out exactly which specific piece is bad and then just replacing that especially for out of warranty products to understand you it was some something happened with your voice can you take it if you take only a summary of what you said not sure I think it's a it's just it's not as profitable for them to fix your product it's more profitable for them to sell you a new one okay yeah are you a happen after side repair no we are not Apple Authorized why if we were Apple Authorized we would not be allowed to perform the repairs that we do not allow our from Apple correct yeah I would not be able to do component level board repairs on a device I would have to swap out the board at a cost that is often higher than that of the actual product itself and it when it comes to a phone I would not be able to replace things like a headphone jack I would have to swap out the entire phone even if all you needed was for the five dollar flex cable that has the headphone jack on it to be replaced if I were authorized that would not be able to actually do my job most of my job would simply be swapping out entire devices for new ones and charging the customer almost the price of a new one so you couldn't decide if you want to repair it or not if you repair so yes if I was an apple repair shop I would have less options to offer the customer so I could not offer the customer we will fix your motherboard I have to offer the customer we can replace your motherboard and that will be 750 to 1200 50 US dollars rather than we can fix it for 200 to 400 I would not be able to offer a customer we can fix your broken headphone jack on your iPhone for 50 dollars I'd have to tell them we will swap out your entire phone for $2.99 so if I was Apple Authorized many of the repairs that we currently do we would not be allowed to do but why are you an for example Hendrick who should be cheaper than Apple say that one more time is there just a little bit of digital distortion there why is your repair and whose miss and cheaper than happy hours is typically cheaper than Apple because rather than replace everything we only replace the part that is broken so if you have a bad headphone jack we will simply remove will we will replace the little five dollar cable at the headphone jack attaches to rather than replace the entire phone or if you have an issue with your computer screen not working we will replace the screen cable rather than replacing the entire thing so by only replacing the part that is defective we can save you money over replacing everything do you also have imported screens to iPhones from China or in Asia yes we've imported screens from China from Hong Kong from Taipei and many other places over the past 10 years yes what kind of screens is it possible to buy for iPhones you can typically buy you used to be able to purchase new original that has been very difficult if not impossible to do over the past I would say four years you can purchase refurbished screens a refurbished screen is where the part that makes the picture is bro it is still good so you could still see the picture on the screen but the glass part that you touch is cracked so that part needs to be replaced you can purchase ones with LCD that makes the picture is original but the touchscreen is refurbished you can buy ones that are knockoffs where it's it's no original parts so it's some no-name company has put together everything so that's typically the three that you could choose from when it comes to iPhones ok so what about the last one you said no-name computer copy is it yeah so it's it's a copy so they're not it's not the original also nothing inside the screen is original so you can buy refurbished parts where certain parts of the screen use the original parts that were in the phone but then let's say that the glass is not original but the LCD is and then you have copy parts where the entire thing is made from scratch and nothing is original and well how is the quality all these different screens well the new original is always going to be the best because that's was the original part that went into the device and it had the same Quality Assurance testing as the original screen but as of about the last four years those are almost impossible to get due to closing lanes in the supply chain now refurbished is the next one because here even if the touchscreen and glass is not original the part that the customer is going to see which is the screen is the same as the original so there you have the same color gamut you have the same brightness you have the same answer about this refurbished screens yes refurbished LCDs are the next best because I talk too fast okay [Music] with refurbished parts are the next best because a refurbished screen is going to have the original LCD that means that your image quality is going to be the image quality in that case is going to be the same as the original even if the touch even if the glass in the front is not the same so that the refurbished LCDs are going to be the next best from original so if you're not able to get the original screen anymore due to the supply chain being closed off by Apple a refurbished original is going to be the next best you can do and that's what most repair shops go for if they want to offer quality to their customer excuse me you say but yeah is it correct you said it was an S next and second-best yes second best we don't really hear what you say and it's important that we hear what you say so I think we might try to start it again if you just hang on I will hang up and I call you again and solve the problems do you possibly have Google Hangouts maybe that would lag less than Skype it's too much time to setup that now I have to stick with this and you can you talk now the sciences that's fine all right are you able to hear me better now yes you said it was three different screens the organelle and they're refurbished and you talked about the quality of the refurbished and what is refurbished screen yes so the okay so the the original screen is going to be the best quality but original screens are almost impossible to buy because Apple has cut out the supply chain lanes that allow us to purchase them the next best is going to be a refurbished screen where the part that is most important the LCD that makes the picture that part is going to be the same as the original so you get the same picture quality as you would with the original even if the frame and other small aspects are not the same the the worst of them are going to be the knockoff screens where nothing is original everything has been made from scratch by another vendor so even the LCD is not going to be the same and you're gonna have worse image quality in that case okay it was some problems also now but well can you then tell us more about this refurbished screens what part is for example new or not bought from a pure world where it came from the part different part screen well when it comes to refurbished when you drop this the screen and you hit it on the corner the front glass layer that you touch with your finger may not be the original anymore or the frame that that screen goes into may not be the original anymore these are parts that where if it's not the original it's not going to be something that is really isn't really important the main thing that's important is going to be the touch screen digitizer layer that senses your touch the sensitivity and accuracy of it and the LCD that actually makes the image that you see those are the two most important parts and those are the ones that you would like to be as close to original as possible and this is what using refurbished screens allows you to do it allows you to offer the best possible screen to your customer that's as close as you can get to the original without being able to get the original since Apple does not supply them and who made these parts who makes refurbished knockoff turnu no I mean the glass for example any number of random vendors in Taipei there's all sorts it's not a very high it's not as difficult to make glass the the front glass as it is to make something like an LCD so I don't know the names of the companies off the top of my head I know for LCDs they're made by sharp by LG Samsung Toshiba but for the glass in the front I don't know off the top of my head who makes them how are we defining OEM are we defining OEM as specific parts of the screen are we defining OEM as the entire product the difference between a refurbished screen and an OEM an OEM screen if oh em is defined as the entire product not simply parts of the screen would be that the refurbished screen is a screen that is was not new somebody had to have used it at some point and then broken it and then it had to be put back together whereas a new screen a new OEM screen is a screen that no sir yes sir [Music] okay can you see me I can see you okay I'm showing to the court is on print screens I think it's it will difficult for you to see I can say and on my face yeah from some films that you have uploaded on YouTube which says the title says basically it's more or less [ __ ] Apple on two of those and then for couple talk to you part three the number one reason Apple pisses me off my question is yes I have issues with how they treat the consumer and how they treat independent repair educational videos that show you how to repair Apple motherboards a component level and how to do data recovery on iPhones and hard drives you said I said what I do is mostly educational videos on logic board repair hard drives and iPhones yes a tional videos where I speak into the camera I will go over a motherboard and and I will show you what is wrong with it then I'll look at it under the microscope I'll find the problem I'll put a scam addict on screen and then I'll show you how that motherboard failed and then I'll explain how to fix it so that either end users or other technicians can learn how to perform these repairs do you for such witness I use YouTube for these videos I would say once every two to four days for the past about five years and for a few years prior to that I was doing videos not as often but once every three days or so say that one more time I'm sorry you have been a teacher for many like yes I've been I just been doing this regularly teaching since 2014 another code with the marker okay for us it is common for the logos to be covered with marker or paint when imported into the United States yes yes so why in u.s. well the way what happens is if I import a part whether it's a hard drive cable battery a screen just about anything that has an Apple logo on it it is assumed to be counterfeit if it is if I am NOT an Apple authorized distributor so I could in theory go to China buy an iPhone mail back the screen and parts of that iPhone to myself in those parts if I do not cover the Apple logo will be seized as counterfeit by United States Customs and Border Patrol now if I yes if we cover the Apple logo then it is no longer considered counterfeit because there is no sort of trademark infringement as we have covered over the trademark and we are no longer representing it as an apple part or product this yes I could remove the paint over the Apple logo but by doing so the force that I would have to use or the scrubbing is going to damage the cable the flex cable on the product and that is then going to render it unusable in many cases yes it would damage the product to the point where it would be useless to me you practice you think no repair shops remove the label because there's no point in doing so it's because the products are typically not represented to the customer as being an apple part that is over the and further on the the repair shop does not want to risk damaging the part by removing that but above all the consumer does not see the logo that is inside the product so it doesn't matter to them I spoke to him last I believe on June 3rd over email prior to speaking to him this morning before this call this morning yes yes yeah we spoke this morning before yesterday I was not informed what happened in the court yesterday now No thank you so much now you're finished or that's not the right thing to say English you do with your explanation and equipment thank you very much all right thank you so much for taking the time to hear my testimony and have a good day
