[Music] thank you [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] foreign thank you [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you all right friends I've been trying for two days to get up here to The Sawmill and I'm finally up here I've been wanting to saw up his Cherry since I got it in these are some customer logs I think we got these about two and a half weeks ago if I remember right I'm not sure about that this is a really nice one it's eight footer the diameter on the operator's side is 24 inches and down here on the other side it's 22 inches and we should be good to go right here I got a fresh cup of Alfie I do need to put a fresh new blade on The Sawmill if you're new to this channel most of you guys are not I run a Joe main Silver Tip turbo 7 on my Super 70 Sawmill if you want to try those blades out give Joe a phone call cell phone number is down the video description why do I say that in every video people still asked I got an email this morning some guy said I love your videos and I appreciate him watching but I guess he missed the part where I say that in every video I don't know who knows but before we get started we do need to change out this blade that one's getting a little dull on us and we're going to be sawing this into four quarter boards that's the customer's preference he wants four quarter boards we'll saw these up we're going to kill and dry them later on this summer probably early fall and he'll get them back before winter time more than likely but before we open this one up let me bring the camera in and I'll show you guys my strategy on how I like to saw up cherry foreign gold handle coffee man it's good stuff all right friends a little disclaimer I got this strategy from Robert Milton over at Hobby Hardwoods Alabama he has a YouTube channel also if you want to learn a whole lot about Sawmill and go check out his channel there's a link below and he posted about a year ago his favorite way to saw up cherry and that's the way I've been doing it ever since and I've had great results so here's the deal with cherry it likes to crack there's nothing you can do about it these laws have anchor seal on them I sealed them the day they got delivered and a few of them have been down for a few weeks so a lot of them already had end chats going on I can't recall you know every one of them if this was there or not but Cherry is really bad to crack if you do live age slabs with cherry you can bet they're going to crack on you so in my opinion and the opinion of a lot of other Sawyers that I listen to and respect a whole lot four quarter boards are your best bet for the best wood on Cherry now something else about Cherry the sapwood is pretty much useless and if you leave the sap wood in your boards you're going to have a lot of drying problems so that's two things you got to do with cherry get rid of the sapwood get rid of the pith and focus on this ring right here and as Robert calls it you want to saw it like a donut and I know what some of you guys might be thinking about two three years ago on this channel actually in this same building I think it was with my lt35 though I did several videos where I did nine quarter Cherry slabs and here's why I done that I didn't know any better I know a lot better now if I could go back I wouldn't have done that I think the only time you should probably slab out a cherry is if the customer wants it that way and they won't listen to reason and they want to pay you to do it that's fine and the second reason may be if you have a really nice crotch log for cherry and I have a really nice Cherry crotch log I got in just the other day and it's about four feet long so something like that is different but oversize it at least a quarter of an inch preferably a half inch to make up for all that twisted and crack and you're going to see during the drying process I'll be interested to know any of you saw yours out there if you have good luck slabbing out Cherry for Live Edge slabs I mean I sold everyone that I did here at my meal but there was a lot of defects I was not very proud of them at all we're also going to be uh find my holster there we're also going to be grade solving which means I want to saw parallel to the bark I don't care if the pith is straight from one end to the other that means nothing to me I want to look for the best face I want to open that up eliminate the sap wood because your best boards with your grade sawing or in this area right here that's where you get your best boards on a log once you start getting closer to the pith you just start flipping the cant and chasing it and finding your best boards at that point but your best ones are right here below the sapwood right here we should get some nice ones out of this depending upon my opening face cut how wide I make it we could get 12 inch wide cherry on this right here and this looks like a really nice log I don't see any knots or cat faces or any major defects or anything like that so we should be okay and before somebody comments because they always do when a log has a crack in it when you grade saw these cracks mean nothing I don't look at them I don't think about them don't consider them you got a saw parallel to the bark and look for your best face if you chase this crack and try to saw parallel to that crack in order to capture it in one board you're going to mess up because you're not going to get your best face right here if I turn this the other way it's going to throw off my best face so don't worry about these cracks guys because they go in a few inches and sometimes they're gone you never even see them again and on Cherry I would also advise you to enter seal it one more time after you saw your boards because even four quarter boards would try to crack on you all right [Applause] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you foreign [Music] foreign [Music] all right friends we have a very serious situation up here at The Sawmill the bucket that I use to throw water on the lumber apparently has a hole in it I've been using this bucket right here since I moved this place in 2018. let me go over this real fast before all the water drains out of our bucket if anybody out there has a bucket they're not using I could use a replacement so this is Cherry this is the second board that came off the log we're looking at 17 inches but that's including this sapwood right here so when I saw up Cherry I'll have a separate stack of boards that will need edging so with cherry my advice is to Edge these before you stack them for air drying it'll cause you less trouble there in the long run so when we Edge these off and get rid of sap wood we're looking at about 12 inches on the width not too bad so uh before I go any further and before this water drains out of this bucket let's throw some water on it I've not done that in a while all right guys see if I can still pull this off I don't think I've done this in about two or three months foreign oh yeah still got it now you can see that a whole lot better you can see all this nice Heartwood right here and I don't see any defects friends these are really really nice and you see the sapwood right there on the sides so when we get rid of that sapwood yeah about 12 inches wide on the boards that's a nice sized Cherry board right there friends I'll take this every day of the week and also guys if you're wondering why I'm not dragging these back with the Sawmill for one these are really wide very valuable boards and you don't want to have any chance at all if these things cracking or splitting sometimes that happens when they fall down on this bed back here if they're really wide this board's over two foot up in the air from the table right here and if it comes backwards it could you know it could cause a crack right here at the end of it that could go all the way through the middle of the board you never know and it doesn't belong to me so I want to protect it the best I can when I start sawing a little bit more here in a few minutes and we start getting down to one by eights and stuff like that I'll probably pull those back but these really wide ones be really careful with them you don't want to pull them back and cause a fracture in them that you're not going to be able to repair it'd be a shame if something this wide and man alive this one right here friends this is a nice one I'm going to scrape off this sawdust there's a little bit too much sawdust on these boards to be honest with you which means I'm solving too slow if I was sawing a little bit faster you wouldn't have this much sawdust on your Lumber [Music] oh [Music] all right friends I think I'm done for the day and here's the reason why and don't worry we'll come up here tomorrow and finish up that cherry law we're going to bring some more up here I think I've got well over 1500 boards feet of cherry to saw up I just got a phone call from my neighbor and if I remember this right his cousin lives five miles down the road and his cousin's neighbor who lives a mile past him because they have some large Farms down there has a walnut tree that just fell over so I'm gonna go take a look at it I will take my camera but my neighbor's cousin told me specifically or told my neighbor rather tell that guy don't bring any cameras this guy is a little sensitive of cameras and stuff like that so we're going to respect his privacy but we don't want to miss out on something like this so let's go get in the truck go check out this walnut tree I guess I shouldn't say Lee I guess I should say I I'm gonna go check out this walnut tree and we'll see you guys back here tomorrow we'll finish up this nice Cherry log thanks for watching friends I really appreciate it [Music] foreign [Music]
