Living Wright - The Roland Reisley Story

[Music] we're here in yonia which sounds like Utopia and it kind of was it's a group of idealistic young people wanting to make homes which fit in their environment it's so it's post second world war they're working with Architects and one of those Architects is Frank Lloyd R himself and a young man called Roland rley he's only 26 comes and becomes involved with the project and ends up approaching the great man himself and building this house so this is the Roland Risley house in yonia and we're here to visit Roland Risley he's one of the few surviving original owners over Frank Lloyd wri house so here we are one of the first first things that people see other than some you know powerful awareness of a of a beautiful space is is the angularity the house is based on a grid which you see on the floor in the concrete which was in his head and and on his drawing board and it creates a system of 60 and 120° angles and all of these surfaces are on that Ang angular system with exception this is a famous photograph of Mr Wright Take also taken here oh in front of the main fire yeah when we started this Enterprise uh I knew that I was pleased to be working with a great architect he's going to produce a wonderful house for us and that let would be nice I could not however possibly have ined the impact that the involvement with Frank lyd Wright would have on on a lifetime over these years I've had so many visitors Architects historians Scholars other people I've learned a great deal about Frank lyd Wright from from from the visitors eventually you know I was motivated to be a founder of the Frank right building Conservancy but in in many many ways uh my whole life has been impacted by this right connection the neuroscientists tell us that living with a sense of beauty reduces stress and can contribute to physical well-being and possibly even to longevity and then I observe well here I am at 94 uh looking and feeling pretty good and I'd like to speculate that that could be partly due to the lovely environment in which I've lived for all these [Music] years uh and over a lifetime needs change people's needs and habits and circumstances change it it all worked out very well in this house there not been a single thing that I might have wanted to change it work well for a a newly wed couple toddlers teenagers Empty Nest Old retirees uh but we're we're we're comfortable here the house does everything for us that we'd like it to do and does it [Music] well after a number of years I came to realize how beautiful I thought the house was frequently throughout my life I'm looking around and say isn't that [Music] lovely for
