[Music] i think i want them on a while [Music] hold my hand [Music] take my hand [Music] [Applause] founded in nashville tennessee in 1866 by the american missionary association this university was an early pioneer in bringing religious music into the quartet tradition audiences were dazzled by the mixture of spiritual hymns and the sweet blending of melodic melodies like they had never been heard before the fixed university singers kept the doors open and opened the doors for black gospel singers the world over yes you know over the years folks there have been a lot of great quartets that have come along come down the road quite a few we've got a bunch of them here tonight we're talking about history one of the oldest quartets still playing around you know 1921 it formed and for it eight decades they've been singing god's praises around the country and the world for that matter yes this is a group when i was growing up in chicago on sunday morning we couldn't wait to turn the radio on because we knew he was going to him as they say in the field chirping and i'm talking about the world famous internationally known fairfield 4. oh [Music] [Music] brother noah you ought to hear the lord [Music] [Music] i know [Music] [Music] [Music] i know yes during the 1930s the all-black national baptist convention sold a paperback collection of favorite gospel hymns which they published they sold by the tens of thousands they had cornered the market with their collections of the gospel pearls born in villa vrica georgia thomas andrew dorsey was a child prodigy he mastered several musical instruments by his teens he had a special love of the blues and ragtime after being saved at a baptist convention in 1921 georgia tom as he was known dedicated the rest of his life to writing gospel music composing some of the most uplifting and inspirational songs ever written his works are a living treasure in which we all can share [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we're gonna have a good time we're gonna have a good time just for you we're gonna sing some of those old songs and some of the new songs just for you and we just like to say hello [Music] hello everybody some of those old songs just for you songs such as [Music] how [Music] [Music] until then [Music] from [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] my [Applause] if [Music] i shall see the great king in all [Music] yes [Music] oh [Music] uh oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] come on [Music] i'll win this fight if jesus will make me whole [Music] [Music] in the world baptized [Music] come on [Music] [Applause] [Music] how my soul [Music] all right not only did thomas dorsey help shape the world of gospel in the 20s he coined the phrase gospel music before those words were spoken together the style was only known as evangelistic songs with such classics as precious lord and i'm going to live the life i sing about in my songs thomas dorsey laid the foundation that gospel music was built upon once again from the mouths of these men directed the ears of god welcome please the fair field [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] somewhere oh [Music] [Music] somewhere [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] in 1932 the first ever gospel singers convention was held at the pilgrim baptist church in my hometown chicago illinois the great depression had yet to loosen his grip on the poor of america and many were still looking for signs of open inspiration the gospel savings convention gave them that organized by thomas a dorsey and sally martin the event was attended by some of the finest gospel singers of the era the need for such a rally was evidenced in the tremendous turnout of more than 3 000 people that day in detroit michigan about 1952 there was a guy named robert blair uh he come on the scene and uh let me tell you turned it around i remember him doing because see there was a place in chicago called 3838 state street they called it quartet headquarters remember that croon yeah see used to meet up there boy listen it'd be the battle of the quartet like that battle of the bands we had battles of quartets because we didn't have no bands we didn't have the only thing we had was a guitar if we had that and that would have been somebody that went to the barn shop and got one yeah but right now folks we're going to bring up a group that's been around for a few minutes we won't go into how long don't say nothing just shut up ladies and gentlemen if you will welcome the violinist [Applause] [Music] turn [Music] is [Music] the love of jesus [Music] some people [Music] wow [Music] [Music] ah oh [Music] [Music] up [Music] some of y'all sitting there now looking at us kind of strange i know this rage here is not like the church but we are having service here and if god been good to you like you've been to me you're not denying kind of wave in your head [Music] i'm gonna ask y'all to do that one more time and see the song said i got so much [Music] to shout about just like lou ross was talking about [Music] laying down in the cars eating baloney if we could get one and i'm here to tell the talk about it right now the lord's been good too he won't be up early this morning [Music] y'all [Music] [Music] [Music] wow [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] how many of y'all know that the bible says that the jaw of the lord is your strength but how many of you know that the bible says that we've been made to do it for a night but god comes in the morning but i believe we can get some joy tonight i want you to reach over and grab somebody by the hand and lift it straight towards heaven grab somebody by the hand lift it up we get [Music] [Music] [Music] wow [Music] [Applause] yes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yes yes yes in the late 1930s gospel music began to undergo a variety of notable changes one group with a heavy impact on that change was the norfolk virginia-based golden gate quartet another quartet on the cutting edge of the change was the dixie hummingbirds of greenville south carolina when lead singer ira tucker joined the group along with base singer william bobo the 1940s saw a new era of gospel music being ushered in with a strong focus on entertainment as well as spiritual enlightenment many more groups helped to contribute to that change from the famous blue jay singers to the mighty clouds of joy to the fairfield four who still toured today it was with great courage and foresight that these innovative quartets were able to create and sustain the transition from what was originally known as soft gospel to the newly defined hard gospel tradition [Music] i expect to be landed upon the show expect to be landed upon the show [Music] landed upon [Music] that jesus gave me [Music] [Music] the voice i heard sounds so sweet [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] forever [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] wow is that gospel is that what gospel is yeah but see they took and they still do it today they take gospel songs and just change the word yes yes instead of saying oh jesus save me and say oh baby yeah uh does that song stand by me that was a gospel song that's right yeah big big big song for the drifters when they cut it as a secular song yeah it was a bunch of them out there doing it too for and they still are you know something else i noticed too when y'all was going that's where doo-wop came from dewalt came from the gospel field they think it came from the rock and roll field because they didn't call it rock and roll and we were doing it back in the 50s and 60s they called it rhythm and blues yes that's right same thing that was present stole it and made all the money in the world the beatles stole it made more money listen we're going to continue the tradition of the true quartet let's give it up folks one more time for robert blair and the violin airs singing dr jesus [Music] [Music] [Applause] you make everything all right [Music] but all right [Music] [Music] yes [Music] he will be [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] all right come on boy i'm just wondering tonight is anybody out there no doctor jerusalem [Music] have you ever did anything for you [Music] how many of y'all know he'll make it all right just wave your hand if you know [Music] you know what i'm glad about it [Music] [Applause] [Music] i don't have no doubt in my mind [Music] [Applause] [Music] wait a minute i wonder how many of the bills got to truly sit down said dr jesus told you i better know god many know him in the park all you're saying tonight i never will forget when the doctor said i wouldn't be able to say [Music] wow [Music] come on [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] yes say yeah yeah say yes [Music] why don't you jump to your face real quick and tell somebody i know he'll make it all right if you don't have no doubt in your mind about it why don't you jump to your feet real quick and say i know he'll make it all right [Music] wow [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] everything [Music] [Music] yes he will yes he will dr jesus with the advent of the newly formed hard gospel a new generation of gospel quartets came to be no longer confined to the passive senior soft message of the past the music now demanded a more entertainment driven stylized delivery this new form of exciting in your face preach to the music and the effect that it had on its audience came to be known as the show with a message for the saints and salvation of sinners the preachers would work their congregations to a fever pitch people would laugh cry get saved turn their life around or sometimes just fall out on the floor being totally overwhelmed by the magnitude and glory of it all and when the spirit of the lord descends upon a congregation everybody knows who's running the show is a major ladies and gentlemen it gives me great pleasure to introduce you a group of men who have been around for eight decades that's eight that's a long time to be singing god's praises but that's what it's all about it gives me great pleasure to present to you the fabulous world-renowned fairfield [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] nobody [Music] [Applause] [Music] how many all know what i'm saying [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] i would anybody know what i'm saying [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] how many of y'all [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] anybody in the middle no god let me hear you see [Music] [Music] [Music] sit down [Music] in today's world hard gospel is the gospel of choice for most quartets it allows them a freedom to preach move sing entertain and deliver the gospel message in a way that was unavailable to the great soft gospel groups of the past the swannish took you there we go from south of the border of carolina and georgia go north now yes and what you're about to experience is called vocal harmonies vocal dexterity that's where preachers said dexterity put some movement in your feet some pattern in your hands give the raws a hand come on [Music] god bless you we're i've got heaven i've got heaven on my mind god bless you i started with jesus at a very early age [Music] yes i've known him nearly all of my life [Music] i admit there have been times when i faltered along the way but i'll keep trying because somehow i've got a baby [Music] you see i got a charge on my life and i've got a job to do and i can't stop until [Music] i can't stand around wasting my time i'm gonna keep on working for jesus [Music] [Music] i don't have time to waste someone else there are some things i'd rather leave behind let me send it to you and i don't have time to be bothered with he said that she said that they said you know what cause that's all i can do to keep myself [Music] all the way i can't stand around wasting [Music] i [Music] i can't understand how some people can move he is coming back [Music] [Music] well [Music] i can't stand around here [Music] i got help [Music] [Music] [Music] yes i am [Music] i can't stand around here [Music] oh [Music] i've got heaven [Music] [Applause] after world war ii america was ready to feel good again and nothing could make a body feel better than a great song sung by great singers with television not yet a mainstay the people turned to their radios for that feeling with the flood of popular black artists demand grew for their recordings and the record industry took notice record sales were on the rise and many groups were gaining notoriety from their own radio shows ladies and gentlemen will you please welcome the racy brothers [Music] [Music] i know it must have been [Music] [Music] [Applause] i had a witness don't you know all those people that was gathered around it could have been anybody that touched you i said no i said no i need some barbarians in this place anybody here tonight ready in saint mark around about the fifth chapter there was a woman who had been sick for 12 long years i got a witness in this play had been sick for 12 long years she had been going from dr the doctor and town of town had done to spend all of her money trying to find somebody to heal her body she heard about jesus [Music] she [Music] is [Music] somebody [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] just like this few groups dressed better worked harder or had more fun than the dixie hummingbirds with gifted lead singer ira tucker the bird sometimes made a show out of imitating the best gospel groups of the day in those days it was an unspoken taboo to do another group's work but when the dick's human birth did it hey it was an honor do you feel all right let me hear you see here any good something wrong here today some of you here you know the lord being good to you but you've been in city all [Music] can i get a witness here any good help god be good to you raise your hand pack a great lead singers who helped to shape the face of gospel music it would require another show just to cover them all we must mention a few one is the great claude jeter whose vocal style is still imitated by some of the best vocal groups in music today when you hear a natural voice go high and then break into falsetto you can thank claude jeter he did it first ira tucker was simply one of the best gospel singers the good lord ever made the lead singer with the dick's human birds for over 35 years his vocals are legendary tucker specialized in having fun and being able to emulate some of the greatest singers of the time thank you for everything you've done looking back over my life remembering the times when i was too mean to live wasn't fit to die god looked beyond my faults and supplied me with my needs i tell you what i think i'll go around and have a little church in this building anyway but let me see the hands of those that know you've been blessed in here tonight good god almighty if you was able to get out of your bed this morning put one foot before the other look around your home see your family still on the land of the living that's a blessing let me ask that question again i said let me see the hands of those that know that you don't get to know that you know without a [Music] and if shadow not ashamed that your next door neighbor might be in the building i want you to get out of your seat right now stand on your feet lift those hands towards heaven let's magnify the name jesus somebody [Music] [Music] you don't want to call it i'm getting ready to sing with a song about how blessed i am and if you know that you know you've been blessed i invite you to come down this aisle and shake my hand would it be all right [Music] [Music] [Music] i [Music] music accessible to the listening public for over 20 years young broadcast his mail order business on wlac radio out of nashville tennessee and he offered discount rates to mail order customers the 50 [Applause] a large part of the success that some gospel groups attained was due to some innovative pioneers at wlac radio in nashville tennessee hoss allen a veteran dj at wlac was one of the first people in radio to appreciate the gospel sound and he was a trailblazer for black artists and groups he sold many a recording through ernie's record shop let me tell you and was instrumental in helping promote black recording artists of all types of music in my 36 years of traveling almost five years ago we were in england young man came in the lobby of the hotel and called me on the house phone and said joe what has been the most outstanding thing in your career you've been to the white house spain africa japan all over the world you won grammys and stellars he said but what stands out in your mind the most and i said to him something that happened in a little town called roy chester new york i saw a man coming through the crowd saying who is joe logan of the mighty cloud someone pointed me out new and he walked up to me he said i'm so glad to meet you he said a few weeks ago my wife passed but i want you to know church this is not made up this is the truth and he said i was at the crossroad i i had lost my job she left me with five little children he said i didn't want to be a father to nobody so one day he said i went in the room and got the gun he said i was gonna kill all of my children and then kill myself he said i wasn't the same man he said but my wife was saved he said i used to see her play your records and he said before i can make up my mind to destroy my family i put on one of the clouds records and he said i don't want to bother you he said i just want you to know that through your music i'm saved today [Music] he turned around and tried to walk away witness joe the arm was always wide open and they even give me the opportunity wants to sing for them i love the mighty clouds of joy but how many of y'all know if you live long enough there's gonna be some rain in your life if you live long enough there gonna be some heartaches and that gonna be some pain but if you wait on the lawn won't it make a way for you well i was not going to sing the way i want to sing right now because god has been good to me and i'm going to let my light shine wherever you may see me i'm gonna let my light shine i won't leave this with you tonight if there ain't been no rain in your life wait a while wait a while [Music] but there ain't been no rain in your life [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] found a job they can't find peace of mind [Music] [Music] it's falling down [Music] when you lose your [Music] when you [Music] i wanna see your hands [Music] y'all great [Music] many a rock and roll artists owe more than a little of their success to gospel singers who walked the road before them jared lewis carl perkins and one of the biggest elvis presley who was often called the king of rock and roll we know that ain't true but the deal was that's the way it went down now they were heavily influenced by the gospel courts that they grew up listening to on wlac out of nashville tennessee from early on gospel music has been woven through the fabric of all forms of music that we know and love today [Music] [Music] my [Music] about to [Music] with me day and night i work hard for your jealousy [Music] [Music] i know you stand by your words stay with me lord very well [Music] well done [Music] are you tired do you time had a hard time [Music] um [Music] i got a [Music] i know you're waiting for me [Music] it wasn't long before the best of what gospel had to offer was updated to meet the demands of the secular side of the music world visionaries such as barry gordy founder of motown records was one of the first to borrow the soulful harmonies of the gospel quartets he rearranged them to a modern field and dominated the recording industry with hit after hit on his artist many came over from the gospel field to sign on his label and were tremendously successful come out bro this is my baby brother and he's going to sing for you now my favorite song put it all in god's hand y'all pray with us [Music] so [Music] [Music] i put it all [Music] i could not bear [Applause] [Music] oh i was standing [Music] when i did not [Music] know which way to turn but you know what put it on [Music] i did listen [Music] i put it on [Music] the problems [Music] lord is too hard [Music] when i could not do things on my own jesus gave me the strength [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and it's all become [Music] [Music] the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] i put stretch out your hands [Music] oh [Music] [Music] i know it's getting late and it's time [Music] i remember what my granddaddy told me when i first found a loud [Music] it's just right for god am i right about it isn't anybody in you ever been sick seem like the most [Music] [Music] [Music] hey [Applause] [Music] [Music] the influence of the early gospel groups wasn't just borrowed by the greats of pop blues and rock and roll many of today's contemporary christian artists a living testament to the impact that gospel court has made on all types of music listen to the artist such as andre crouch the roots of gospel music are evident from his harmonies and his soul for delivery of a sermon wrapped in a beautiful melody other contemporaries such as the brother and sister duo bibi and cece waning as well as kurt franklin keep up with their early predecessors but with a modern feel can i get you to help me says jesus can i hear you why i left a call on the name of jesus i found out that there's power have i got a witness on that tonight in that name there is your joy in that name there's pc in that name and i can go back and do another song for you and tell y'all what it did for me can i take what it did for me can i tell you what it did for me this is what he did he [Music] is [Music] tell me [Music] [Music] and who do you [Music] for the think [Music] [Music] oh [Music] i [Music] [Music] [Music] i know [Music] i know [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] i know [Music] [Music] after reaching its peak in the mid 1950s the winds of change began to affect many of the gospel quartets of the time more emphasis were being placed on the instrumentation while the powerful vocals once the backbone of the gospel quartet began to take a backseat to the driving beat many groups came off the road after their heyday many adapted to the change many new groups answered the call the gospel quartet wasn't lost it was merely growing in a new direction many new groups were able to carry the torch respectably and build upon what those early pioneers had carved out of love necessity and their undying spirit troy raymond and the soul searchers yes [Music] [Music] [Music] do you know how to lean on it do you mean it stand on your feet come on come on come on come on [Music] i told y'all to stop back there something wrong with them y'all they just won't stop can i get away do y'all know how to leave put your hands in there [Music] come on all right [Music] when we come back [Music] but i told him i trusted him on my life and he never failed [Music] [Music] [Music] please [Music] leading all along i want somebody here [Music] i think [Music] can i get a witness here just [Music] [Music] i'm please [Music] [Music]
