foreign [Music] sitting on the coast of the warm Pacific Ocean there is a calm thriving town that welcomes people from all over the world is a beautiful Beach Town famous for hosting nine gorgeous Bays a natural reserve a great diversity of protected species as well as a warm and mixed human community it's also well known for being the most urbanized town on the coast of Oaxaca its infrastructure is pristine and it has a considerable number of foreigners from North America as well as from European countries hello everyone my name is Marianna and I'm super excited to have you again for the newest episode in the Mexico relocation guide City Tour series today is all about watulco in the beautiful state of Oaxaca Santa Maria Huatulco is a municipality on the coast region of the state of Oaxaca now we're going to focus on what is known as watulco or watulcos base nowadays A renowned touristic destination but how did it all get started well we gotta go back centuries to the first settlers in the area the mistecos It is believed that they arrived around the 11th century and called this place which translates to the place of the worshiped log or slash wood they named it like this because of a legendary Big Win cross that used to stand at the top of the hill that it was said was left there by a strange Foreigner who brought it with him over 1500 years before by the arrival of the Spanish Vineyards during the Colonial area the word cuatolko was adopted to the current watulco and the indigenous Village turned into one of the most important ports during the first Decades of the Spanish rule ships loaded with Treasures of silver and gold would leave the coast of Oaxaca this attracted a few Pirates to the area and the most famous ones were Francis Drake in 1578 and Thomas Cavendish in 1587. both of them disembarked on watulco and sacked the village now another notable event was a betrayal of General Vicente Guerrero a national hero who was a key character in the victory for Independence in January 1831 he disembarked on one of watulco's beaches and that is where he was betrayed and delivered to his captors from that day on that beach it is known as Playa lentrega which translates to the delivery an allusion to this event and is one of the most visited beaches in town the area remained a little small fishing village with only human settlements being the Bay of Santa Cruz however in 1969 The Mexican government decided to invest in tourism and after a much much looking and they came across a nine base of watulco which are Conejos tangolundaway Santa Cruz El Maguey El Organo kakaluta it wasn't until 1983 that the construction of the touristic complex began same as in Cancun the institution in charge of developing this project was fonatour so you'll actually see some resemblance between this beach versus Cancun when it comes to the infrastructure and developing of the urban landscape but nowadays watulco stands out for offering all kinds of activities and amenities luxury all-inclusive resorts yacht clubs first class restaurants and bars and an urban infrastructure that has a great quality of life now when it comes to the weather in watulco we can say that it's hot all year round if you love summer year round huatul goes a place for you but to give you a better idea of what you can expect the average temperature year round is around 83 degrees Fahrenheit sometimes reaching a little bit over 90 degrees and going down to 70. there is a rainy season that usually lasts half a year from May through November with the heaviest rainfall usually in September which is also the month with the highest chances for hurricanes all in all if you like warm weather and having a nice Beach nearby to freshen up from time to time you'll find a perfect balance in watulco and because watulco sits at the end of a mountain you'll have some dramatic Landscapes of beach combined with hills and little valleys it's truly breathtaking the only downside to watulco is that the area is prone to earthquakes however most of them are pretty small so you'll hardly ever feel them now adapting to a new life in watuko shouldn't really be a problem this town was planned and developed to support a heavy flow of Tourism all year round the situation creates a typically welcoming diverse environment many of these visitors come with the intention of scouting the place to see if it's a suitable place for them to live and many others just come for holiday and end up falling in love with the place leading them to decide to stay whatever the case might be the native Community is always warm and welcoming and most businesses have adapted to the Dynamics of a tourist-focused economy meaning that you'll come across a considerable amount of bilingual people as well as native English speakers however we really do recommend learning Spanish beforehand since in comparison to the other major towns in Mexico the local population speaks mostly Spanish is a very laid back town I wouldn't say this is a party town I mean of course you can find some late night bars and nightclubs where you can have you know the late night drink from occasion to occasion but it's not the norm and since this is a relatively small town it gives that everybody knows each other here Vibe the majority of the Foreigner Community here seems to be made up retirees mostly from the United States and Canada although in recent years a lot of Europeans have come to guatulco and found a home here also this is actually a very active Community you'll find several groups on Facebook that organize weekly get-togethers pickleball games dinner parties and different activities to keep the network going watulco is a well-planned town that is still growing and developing the project is to turn all nine base into first class resort destinations now so far the project has sprung an urban area known as crucesita where I would say most local stores and activities concentrate pretty much attached to this urban area you'll find chawa Bay where there's a few hotels restaurants bars stores and a public beach with the same name and it's only a 20 minute walk away from downtown crucesita this would be the more developed and Urban Ice of the base followed by and Santa Cruz the rest of the bays are still in development many of them are still virgin beaches so we will go over just three Bays since this is where you'll find most of your options when it comes to housing as well as everyday amenities I'll start with crucesita since this is the biggest urban area in the Huatulco base thus providing more options at a very affordable price is divided into sectors that are simply named after a letter there is sector H sector I are and so on downtown is located in sector H or sector which is where you will find most of the action I wouldn't say there's much distinction between one sector to another pretty much every sector offers the same amenities and infrastructure you could say there are a few sectors with an upscale buy but at the end of the day it's all about the size of the town if you consider it the same for the size of the town in any case here inclusive you'll find a wider range of options and prices for for example you can easily find a two-bedroom apartment starting at 11 000 pesos a month it's in a nice street with stores nearby that means you can walk to a lot of places now if you're looking for something with more space maybe you want a garden maybe you want a view or maybe you want to be really close to the beach then you can find houses condo complexes or even gated communities and then you can expect to pay at least 22 000 pesos a month but it can go up to 30 or even 40 000 pesos a month depending on The View depending on the amenities the size of the place and so on it'll really depend on your budget and what kind of lifestyle you want to get once you're living in watulco next is Tango lunda now Tango lunda is mostly a hotel Zone and the most important one of the whole touristic complex however the area has Diversified and you can also find several residential complexes normally offering First Class Type Of Rentals here the norm would be either nice condos with great views and communal areas like pools barbecue pits and greens basis or also big houses normally on closed streets where the privileged Ocean View so it's easy to assume that you're going to pay for those views the real estate in this area is of high value for example to rent a two-bedroom two-bath condo in tangolunda you'll have to come up with at least 30 000 pesos a month on average from there you can imagine that prices can go higher than that always depending on the amenities you're getting or the types of view the types of space Etc but keep in mind that this is considered a high-end area there are upscale restaurants beautiful beaches a golf club you are well away from downtown so it's really quiet and very safe to live in Santa Cruz Bay was the only human settlement in this part of the coast before all this urbanization process this was the only fishing Village so you could say that today started here in Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz you'll find a well-developed urban area but much smaller in size if you compare it to grocery Santa Cruz is a bit more diverse if compared to in terms of budget and Vibe it still has an upscale tendency but it is more budget friendly most houses here are owned since this was the first area to be developed however you'll find some options to rent or buy what you'll see the most is houses that are usually three bedrooms or more so they tend to be larger these can be on either side of the street and summer gated communities that have developed in recent years now rentals are harder to find mostly because there is more demand than Supply and remember they are usually bigger so to give you an idea rentals start at 30 000 pesos a month and although you would be within a few minutes from the beach you still have a lot of stores parks and all types of amenities even though you're not literally right next to the beach now one thing I want you to note about watulco is that it has an influx of people coming from Canada and the United States during the winter months to escape the cold weather up north usually from November through April which means that there is some price fluctuations during the high season especially for rentals what I mean is it's a good idea to look at rentals in watulco during the low season or the summer months so you can secure a rental at a more reasonable price rentals are hard to find in wattlego especially if you're searching for rentals on the lower end of the budget and in one of the major neighborhoods or base that we are discussing now if you have been following Mexico relocation guide by now you know I recommend to rent for at least six months before committing to a specific place or before buying a house in Mexico I think it's really important and by now you have probably heard me say that finding rentals in person is the best way to find the best price rentals for starters you'll be able to actually see the place another thing is a lot of rentals are never published online well that has never been more true in watulco than other places matulco is truly a word of mouth kind of place if you're looking for the best cost rentals and if you need help finding places for rent in watulco we highly recommend spending some time in town scoping the different areas and talking to everyone you meet so you can find the best rental for you within your budget but again my advice is to search within the low season and what about the cost of utilities well as I mentioned before what turko's infrastructure is thought to provide with everything that you'll need so water electricity gas and internet are well covered here water is provided by phonator and you should be paying somewhere around 400 pesos a month for a two-person household electricity is provided by the only institution in Mexico that supplies electricity in the entire country which is the FAA or the CFE your cost in watulco is probably going to be higher depending on whether you use air conditioning or not most households in watulco have at least one or two units depending on how many people live in the house so if this is your case expect to pay around 1500 to 1800 pesos a month for electricity alone gases provide I did mostly by gaze Oaxaca the dynamic is that you'll call them place an order and after a few hours they show up in your house either to switch your gas tank or to fill a stationary one consult with your landlord to know which kind of tank you have and 30 liters is enough for a two month period even if you cook regularly the cost should be around 650 to 750 pesos now internet is mostly provided by telmix although Mega cable is also present in the area and of course you can offer satellite and alert with starlink it seems that fiber optic is still very limited in watulco so your fastest option would be around 25 megabytes of download speed some areas are already getting fiber optic but the process could take months or even years it's really if this is really important for you then you should check the speed of the rental or place you're buying before you actually settle on it in any case your cost 25 megabyte speed package will cost you around 400 pesos to 500 pesos now if you're one of the lucky people to get fiber optic in your neighborhood you can get one gigabyte and that should cost you around 1800 pesos a month and if you want to get satellite internet starlink offers a package starting at 350 pesos a month and going up to 1600 pesos a month depending on how much speed you get if you are liking this video make sure you give it a like and don't forget to subscribe to Mexico relocation guide if we have been of any help to you make sure you support the their field so move to Mexico the right way with our complete Mexico relocation guide the links are in the description of the video okay now let's get into shopping in watulco now if you've been watching any of my videos and you know I'm going to start by encouraging you to buy from local stores and producers but I do this because while living in Mexico it truly is going to be your best option it has a positive impact on the local economy as well as on the small producers pocket and the quality of the product is undisputable you'll get fresher and more organic products for less money it's really a no-brainer when you put it this way here in watul you'll find a great number of small stores selling all types of goods you have your typical fruit and vegetable stores butcher shops dairy shops cleaning product shops hardware stores and everything in between there's a market right in downtown crucesita and it sells mainly handcrafts and some local drinks and ingredients like Mezcal chocolates and things like that but there's not an area where they sell fresh fruits and veggies meat or dairy there's a food court inside the market that is open all morning up to 6 PM in which they serve local dishes like laudas mole seafood and everything for a very reasonable cost now surrounding this Market you'll find countless store selling everything from jewelry instruments clothes Furniture decorations souvenirs and everything you can imagine the best part is that in whatever sector or Bay that you choose to live in you won't have to drive long distances to be near any shopping areas all sectors in and base are well equipped with services and pretty much household good shops just keep in mind that prices tend to change depending on the neighborhood they're fancier in the neighborhood the higher the prices same as in any other part of the world right now watulco has two big supermarkets both of them big Mexican chains these are chedrawi and soriana and they both offer pretty much the same that you would find at the local stores with the advantage that you'll have everything under one roof and probably open at different hours or longer hours maybe the other Advantage is the fact that in these supermarkets it's easier to find imported products although it won't be hard to find imported products in some local stores within some sectors and neighborhoods in town now when it comes to malls what turko doesn't have any big malls like the ones you would find in Cancun or Puerto Vallarta and I honestly find this to be one of what tulco's biggest charms that even though it has developed and turned into a major tourist destination it has preserved some sense of identity and culture by letting the local producers dominate the shop picture even when it comes to fashion handcrafts and decorations now let's explore your options when it comes to enjoying good health and medical services available in the area I will always recommend that your first option to try to stay active so that you don't have to visit a doctor in the first place here in watulco you'll have plenty of options to keep yourself in good shape for example becoming a member in your nearest gym or Fitness Studio to outdoor activities like just walking or even joining pickleball games at the deportivo which is in La crucesita you won't have excuses when it comes to keeping your body active however when you do fall sick don't worry you're covered if it's something small like the flu or food poisoning you can rely on the private Consultation Services at the local pharmacies pharmacias de la Oro is free and farmacia similares charges 50 pesos they also offer other services like giving you shots and basic lab work now for General hospitals or public hospitals you have two specialty clinics scattered around town they both have really good reputations one of them is the Navy hospital and the other one is a general hospital run by the imss which is a social Healthcare institution in Mexico now you also have private hospitals like the San Miguel hospital or the Huatulco Surgical Clinic now all of these Hospitals and Clinics offer great service and a number of Specialties it won't be necessary for you to travel a great distance to get an emergency treated or to have any kind of special treatments so how do you get around well most people in what would go move around on foot I've been saying that this is a small town and it definitely has its benefits especially when it comes to navigating the place since you have everything pretty much nearby you won't be in constant need of a car or using taxis you can run most of your errands by walking to your nearby Source the same applies if you want to go out or have a few drinks with your friends you'll always have restaurants nearby if you're not a big fan of walking or the distance plus a heat is just too much for you you can take a taxi which should charge anywhere between 35 Pesos to a little bit more if you're moving around the same Bay now if you want to move to a different Bay let's say from crucesita to tangolunda then the cost will be 60 pesos which is around 4 US Dollars very very affordable there are a few buses that will take you from one Bay to another however these leave at very specific hours at very specific times public buses or Vans are not fully organized in watulco since it's not really needed now if you do want to own your own vehicle a lot of people here opt to have a scooter since the infrastructure is well suited for writing one of these the streets are well maintained but they aren't wide enough or provided with enough parking spaces to sustain a big population of cars also one of the charms of this town is that there are no traffic jams so I would say it's better to keep it that way to leave town and visit other nearby towns or even other states you have at least three options one of them is the road you have two options which are passenger vans run by private companies depending on where you want to go the price will be determined but to give you an idea a ride to Oaxaca City will cost you around 300 to 400 pesos a person these however can be a bit uncomfortable if you find this to be true you can then go to the Ado bus terminal which is a big National Transportation Company here you'll get on a big bus with nice comfortable seats a TV bathroom sound site air conditioning and all the amenities for a very comfortable trip they even have Wi-Fi obviously the price is higher at least twice as much but I'm telling you the comfort is worth another thing to keep in mind is that the landscape of Oaxaca is pretty irregular so road trips in the state are usually long and curvy the right to Oaxaca City can last up to seven hours that's why they must decided that watulco needed its own International Airport it does have some direct flights to Canada and the United States although only two of a very few cities some is same as in domestic flights from within Mexico most flights go through Mexico City still I think it's a really good option if you're not feeling like spending over six hours in a bus or a van and you want to travel to other parts of Mexico now I think by now we've established that watulco is well suited to have a comfortable lifestyle and entertainment is certainly not the exception now as I mentioned before I wouldn't consider what durco a Party Town however it does have a number of nightclubs and bars as well as some open bar boat tours but overall the pace here is peaceful and quiet on the other hand there are a lot of daytime activities that will certainly keep you busy of course most of these activities have something to do with the beach or the water but we'll go over some other options so you'll see that it's actually really hard to get bored in watulco we will start with visiting the nine base which I think is a must and probably the number one thing to do on every visitors list you can either take a catamaran tour these usually leave from Santa Cruz's Pier this tour takes about six hours departs early in the morning and by Sunset you are going back to Santa Cruz this is a true really great day trip or you can take your time and explore the base by yourself every Bay has something different to offer and as I mentioned before some of them remain Untouched by the urban progress starting from San Agustin Bay which is the biggest and a must for divers since under its Waters you can find one of the biggest coral reefs in the Pacific there are also some great restaurants and cabins where you can stay nearby then you have Chacha qualbe which is only accessible by boat if you manage to get there you'll find two virgin beaches with calm Waters Perfect for a day of relaxation kakaluta Bay hosts two virgin beaches which are accessible by foot and it's home to some seasonal migratory birds so if you like bird watching this is a place for you magebe and Organo Bay are really next to each other making it almost one Bay both of them stand out for the calmness of their Waters and in my gay beach you can enjoy some of the local Gastronomy usually to the day's catch then you have Santa Cruz chawway and Tango lunda base which we already established are the most urbanized areas in any of these you can find nice restaurants bars public beaches water activities and so much more Tango lunda stands out for being home to the only Golf Club in watulco which is an 18-hole course with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean if you're a golfer this golf course is a must and last but not least Conejos Bay which offers four public beaches calm and warm Waters and beautiful sunsets you are also nearby to beaches like mazunte zipolite puertos condidos the best part is that each Beach on the coast of Oaxaca offers a totally different vibe from the other and that is only beach activities remember that this area is super rich in culture and natural wonders since watulco sits at the very tip of a mountain range it makes the ideal place if you're a fan of hiking you'll find several Trails that'll lead you to wonderful viewpoints not only is it worth the effort it's also a great way to stay active if you want to visit an archaeological site then you should pay a visit to the copelita archaeological site it is dated to the year 500 BC and it only costs 5 US dollars to access the site now we definitely need to mention the food you should know that the state of Oaxaca has one of the best gastronomies I would say in the world it'll be a never-ending task trying all the dishes and all the different local restaurants everywhere you go you'll see the famous laules Oaxaca is also famous for its traditional mole which is a unique mix of spices that I'm sure you'll love obviously being in watulco eating Seafood is a must you'll have a lot of options like ceviches cocktails aguachiles and everything you can imagine and remember that you always have the option to just explore Beyond Oaxaca is such an incredible state with so many things to see and do for instance in the extremely rare case that you get really bored on the beach you're only three hours away from the beautiful mountain towns I mean I can go on and on you can visit other nearby archaeological sites or you can go on a Mezcal tasting visit lagoons go to mangroves where you can see the crocodiles in nearby beaches you can see turtles nesting you can go into the jungle and find hidden waterfalls where you can freshen up after a nice hike and the list goes on Oaxaca is truly not only gastronomically Rich it is culturally rich and it has some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see now isn't it truly amazing how much a little town has to offer we think so I hope you guys liked it too and that it actually helps you get a better understanding of what watulco is actually like now my best advice is come and see there will be no amount of videos and no amount of Facebook groups and no amount of tags that can truly live it and experience it for yourself I'm pretty sure you'll find it as Charming as we do but you truly have to find out for yourself now whenever you come to try the watulco experience make sure to take the time to actually experience it my recommendation is that you spend at least a month to see and learn what living and what tulco is actually like and if you want a true expert experience I highly recommend you look into our private watulco relocation tours we recommend people who give you a nice customized tour and the person is a local who will answer your questions and give you a detailed idea of the place from a Local's perspective things like you know what are the pros and cons of living in watulca now if
