welcome back to exotic our play place everybody thanks for joining mark here again today's discussion is about Mercedes and Lexus which one is more reliable does it really come down to innovation or some other reason why one brand is more or less reliable than the other one let's get talking about it now when we get to the topic of reliability a lot of it has to be questioned that Mercedes relaxes they're all top of their breed in terms of innovation is that a big contributing factor let's face it Mercedes has been a key and top innovator in the industry car industry for years so has that been a contributing factor I mean let's walk through some of the examples of how Mercedes is an innovator first of all did you know that they were the first to operate with the pre collision safety system now is adopted for almost every vehicle out there today so the radar cruise control that allows you to adjust automatically without you changing it the vehicle will change it for you that has also been an innovation how about airbags you know the old airbags that keep you safe that pop up out of your steering wheel or the their pillars or wherever there's all kinds of airbags nowadays you can find vehicles with 810 airbags or more to keep the occupants safe about another innovation how about stability control that's the thing that keeps your car on track without wiping out in bad conditions ESC or stability control that you'll find in Mercedes and you find them in most cars nowadays that was actually something that was created and utilized by Mercedes and BMW they were the originators to use this system how about the double clutch transmission I mean a lot of cars nowadays are auto or manual and it works very well but the double clutch transmission was adopted by Mercedes and other car companies like Lamborghinis and Ferraris a lot of companies that value performance and spirited driving because it does a great job of giving you the automatic functionality as well as lightning speed shifts for the racetrack and exciting driving dynamics how about brakes nowadays that's right in 1886 Karl Benz initiated a patent to his wife who came up with the concept of putting leather against the block it gave a little more friction and therefore the patent of brakes began the concept of friction which allows the vehicle to slow down with compression and let's face it Mercedes no shortage on the use of twin turbos nowadays so between super charging and turbo charging Mercedes utilizes a lot of forced induction again I see twin turbo right here this is what gives these cars the performance bang for your buck that you're looking for now unfortunately with all this innovation that we just listed sometimes there's problems in keeping a vehicle reliable why because a lot of this technology now is driven by electronics and computers which can fail anything electronic these days has a propensity for failure and this is no different as well we mentioned turbocharged superchargers you're pushing air compressed air into an engine that's going to have an impact on the engine's longevity yes it boosts the pressure the performance the efficiency the speed fuel economy everything can improve with turbo charging however it comes at a cost usually a shortened lifespan but unfortunately with Mercedes and a lot of other vendors these days as they have two sub parts out so they sub out a lot of their parts to support suppliers who provide the infotainment systems break suspension parts engine parts all of that comes from third parties the engineering comes in-house but a lot of the parts that they utilize come from third parties now that's where the problem exists in a lot of cases with Mercedes it's not the fundamental engine design or the construction of a lot of the parts the engines themselves are very very robust especially today they've gotten a lot better than previous generations however where they fall short sometimes is getting the quality control on a lot of those third-party parts for example infotainment systems lauded electronic parts sensors things like that can and will fail because of whatever the vendor decides is the appropriate amount of quality control and as a result what ends up happening is Mercedes now because it's a premium brand lots of Technology lots of innovation now that translates to lower than average expected reliability so Mercedes typically gets around that average reliability ratings not because they're poorly built vehicle but because they're chock-full of innovation and technology which has an impact on their overall dependability so Lexus reliability comes more form of repetition versus innovation now that doesn't mean Lexus doesn't innovate absolutely they do a lot of great things trying to push forward and push the envelope as well for example they use cat scan what they call to scan essentially the inside of the engine they use a technology to make sure look for imperfections and flaws so let's not forget about Lexus and the Park Assist program they did that they're also forging ahead with the automated cruise control and as well how about this we have a hybrid now let's not forget that Lexus is one of the premium brands to get onto the high hybrid wagon and they essentially perfected that to the point where it's very non intrusive its reliable and it works so Lexus really owns a lot of technology too and innovation so how is it then Lexus pulls out a slightly higher score consistently over and over and over again over Mercedes or AMG brand for example how does Lexus pull that off well it's quite simple the majority of the mechanical changes are minimal they design things that will be functional made for high production use for example shared with a lot of the drive trains from the Toyota brands and as a result they wind up with engines transmissions that don't change a lot and it's the lack of change that creates longevity they have a consistent thought process they put products out that don't change they give it a lot of time it becomes long in the tooth and as a result it's reliable it doesn't mean it's boring or slow or gutless as a matter of fact a lot of the technologies there in Lexus four valves per cylinder twin cam they have obviously have variable valve timing as a lot of this they use a lot of the driver assist programs as I mentioned before their initiate their innovators in hybrid systems so Lexus really does push a lot of envelopes however they always seem to hold off a lot of the other German brands try to push and do a little bit more try a new technology a new electronic device they've put programs and systems in place that push the envelope for innovation the German cars for example like Mercedes and Lexus often comes along after the fact refines work the bugs and because of that as well as an improved quality control program within the company itself you wind up with a car that is far more reliable and gets consistent ratings higher than most of the other cars from the AMG Mercedes brand so I hope you guys all enjoy the video today thanks for coming out make sure you hit that subscribe button if you're not already a subscriber if you are thanks for coming back and don't forget to click on that link over here that's some great reviews about reliability of many of the other different premium brands so hope to see you guys real soon and don't forget life's too short to drive boring cars see you next time bye bye
