The only term that I was never able to figure from the context was the whole "one bell pepper" thing. What the FUCK is Wayne talking about? Not one drill bit/not one bell pepper??

He looks, sounds, and carries himself so different than he does when playing Wayne. If I didn't already know, I'd never guess the person being interviewed was the actor who played Wayne.

Letterkenny debuts a year ago you've already been greenlit for a third season when you first sat down here we were talking about friends of mine in Newfoundland who are never excited about anyone I speak to you know I could be talking to you know Tom Hanks or something like yeah whatever man give it up where they get better than me they are so excited that I'm talking to you oh cool you have a lot of people who really love this show how you feelin it's it's it's a lot to wrap your head around the effort for all of us for all of us on the cast you know because you know we we have expected that that critics would come along and tee off on us you know it's a it's a fairly lowbrow show but I think it has it as different elements that that kind of protect us we got and got some soul and some heart in there and it's a tough show at the end of the days as well you know that was a big priority to me that that the show be tough well what does that mean just stakes stakes there are there stakes in a small town like where I grew up in was tool Ontario and I'd like to say you know getting your your butt kicked is is a concern on a day to day basis and it was important for me to have that kind of inter woven with with with the humor you know there had to be stakes in a small town because that's what life is like their little Ontario is a very specific part of the country and letter came letter Kenny is largely based on on that tenets and ins life you had growing up and so you'd be excused if you thought that only people from that area would really get it hmm but like I mentioned friends of mine in Newfoundland love this show friends of mine in Quebec love this show I know people who have procured it in America in ways they probably shouldn't have procured it to watch it what do you think the universal appeal of this show is our show has teeth and I think that I think that that's something that sets us apart were the furthest thing from a safe comedy there's a lot of negativity on our show a lot of the humors is negative negative negative 'ti driven we take the piss out of each other I guess is the long and short of it that's something that I think a lot of a lot of networks would would ask you to pump the brakes on but we're lucky that in our partnership with with bail and with crave TV I think that the show has only gotten filthier when it's transitioned from the youtube series to to television but it's it's interesting you know you talk about like who the show appeals to and even when the webseries first came on we couldn't believe how many people from the southern states and all over the states were really attaching to it but Australia yeah yeah we've got a lot of people and you know we don't condone how they get access to the show but you know they can make you a check to your address and you will give you that will give out the address at the end of the show don't you put it along the bottom on the screen one one nine hundred baby is funny you mentioned that you think it's a really negative show and I guess it is I mean you know I think the way that a lot of people speak to one another when they kind of insult one another is largely with a lot of heart or not meant not meant because when I watch the show sure there's a lot of chirping a lot of giving people a hard time however I don't feel bad when I watch it I don't and I think a lot of shows can be so negative at you when you turn it off you feel bad about yourself or you feel bad that you watched it but you'd never get this feeling with Letterkenny what's what's the balance east right there you know one of one of my favorite comedies ever would be Summer Heights High I did watch an HBO show by the stood called Chris Lilley plays three different characters on it and they did something similar and something that I thought set them apart they're the same thing on eastbound and down is that they always made sure that they showed the soft underbelly of the character after they flipped out you know they went to those places they went to those negative places they called people names they didn't necessarily bully people because that's not funny you know we had to make sure we weren't crossing that line but if somebody pokes you you're ready with a rebuttal and your rebuttal is warranted because they started it it's a simple playground logic if there's something to keeping your eye on here when you're writing dialogue when you're shooting in that and then my desk turning into bullying yeah that's a left a little too much yep I write it with a dude from Montreal called Jacob tyranny whose the director of it as well he's very conscious of it I'm very conscious of it because you know it can it can very quickly drift into the unfunny territory and yeah there's there's nothing funny about bullying so if somebody's going to come at somebody with something it's always warranted you know yeah either you know said something to a dude sister or ran a hockey player's goalie something very simple just a no-fly zone you know you have to respond so that's kind of our approach there Listowel ontario's that's right listable yeah mr. will Ontario the inspiration for letter caning I have to have the folks back home seen it oh yeah how did I feel about it well I like to say that the biggest Letterkenny fans on planet earth are our enlisted well I can honestly say there's there's only been like one time that mom said that she got kind of a backhanded comment at at the bank something along the lines that you like you know you know it's about us right but like oh all my pals are back in it you know last year at Patty fest in enlist was a big big Irish Festival and the week of Saint Patrick's Day you know like there's an arm wrestling competition yeah it like bands like you know Sloane came one year and you know they all rock their Letterkenny t-shirts at these big paddy fest parties and that's that's really cool to me because patty Fest was such a huge deal growing up you know it was the biggest the biggest party of the year and was to also knowing that the show is getting wrapped theirs is pretty cool for me again a lot of folks coming up to you saying stuff like a man is that me is that character me I've had it a couple times just with names you know like my my pal Stewart said to me because we have a character named Stewart he's like he's like loves love the name of your lead skin stuff like that and another pals another pals sister-in-law who worked at a bar said to me she's like he's the bartender based on me and I said no you know I'd never never make it that close to home and you know my parents still live there business is still there I go back quite a bit and you know as much as it's a lot like my life growing up in Listowel it's not directly based on list I lived in a lot of small towns playing hockey and picked up a lot of that stuff along the way so it's a melting pot you guys maybe q I'm talking to Jerry key so the co creator and star of the series Letterkenny and the series is made up of three groups of people in Letterkenny there's that kind of jocks the skids I guess they'd be other pieces come the Hicks maybe yeah back home we have the jocks the preps the Skeets and the Scully's well Skeets and stoie so there's Skeets are kind of like hard tickets and fellows who were wearing Columbia jacket smoking in the back of the school okay you know I'm talking about that sounds like a skid hybrid to me but yeah what's and if Delia Scully was like this I think they're closely to your skids the folks who were like Marilyn Manson t-shirt Oh painted their nails black okay war Metallica t-shirts yeah and smoke a little bit farther away from the ski okay when you are yes Scully's it's my favorite one man yeah it is and I still I'll still if I see my buddy wearing like a an old Pantera shirt ago yep Scully um which of these groups of folks were you identifying with growing up in Listowel well I played hockey coming up I played competitive hockey through high school and I even left my high school to play at in Strath row and so I went to high school and in London for a couple years I'd say I'm most identified with with the hockey players but I was friends with everybody you know I worked with a lot of the Hicks at or family sawmill or did big barn installation for for a summer and stuff so you meet these guys and you know you're always taking the piss out of each other I remember I was in a crew when we were doing this pig barn installation and you know I'll take a shot at the Hicks every chance I get and they'll take a shot at me every chance I get but we're all buddies you know it's friendly and we're driving down the lane way to our bosses place he had to pick something up and there's this field this field beside and so I just look over at my pal Craig Gibson and I was like nice field of wheat there a Craig and there's just silence in the truck he looks over he's like that's barley Jarrett I refill that story all the time you know but that's that that's kind of the accent back home with with a lot of this guy but you know these guys are guys you know we've got like a handshake that'll lift you right off the ground yeah these guys work hard their work hard play hard bunch and you know this is it was really important for me to to have that accuracy in in the Hixson Letterkenny it's funny you mentioned that you can you can give it out to people as long as you get it back and there's a genuine respect there's one exception to that and your show which is the the hockey players when they enter senior hockey you just don't want to give too much away but they're in junior hockey for a while know they go to senior hockey and they learn pretty early on that it's not that easy to char people in senior hockey yeah yeah certainly you know what Riley and Jonesy were played by Dillon play fair and Andrew her I never intended for them to be kind of that that goofy but what they brought to set it just worked so well you know III think that if there's any crew that that's in Letterkenny that's a hit more than any more than any other crew would be the hockey players they're just going over so so well she can't argue with that you know when they come to set we're just laughing runner we're on the floor every time they talk but I thought it'd be interesting in season two if I brought in some guys were a little more physically imposing who were those kind of like mean bully straight edge hockey players and I just wanted to see how that would play off did you come across these guys in your plane and the Western Ontario holiday yeah yeah big time these guys are all over the place you know you're you're scared of them and it's it's it's it's not unlike you know like working in a crew at a sawmill or doing anything else you've got the veterans the older guys who want to get results and the ways they get it is by cracking the whip of businesses is by bullying a little bit and you learn because you know you don't want to be bullied you don't want to be the weakest link so you get up there and then the young guys come in under you and then it's your job to pay that forward so well you know one of the defining aspects of the show one of the first things you notice is the slang how much of it are you we're going to get into some of time we're going to do a little flying off later which I'm really looking forward to our how much of this slang is coming from list of Ontario and then the towns around that you were playing hockey and how much of this is you making up yourself and say it's about 50/50 yeah you know there's there's a lot of contagious dialogue back home and that's that's really the foundation of you know where Jacob and I uh where Jacob and I write from that's our biggest inspiration is is the contagious dialogue the quotables you just hear so much gold when when you go home like pitter patter let's get a ders is the thing that the captain of my team in the straw throwing my cooker used to say all the time and of course it gets shortened down pitter patter and then we've got another example of that as our our first ad Megan banning last seasons from Newfoundland is it one thing that they say there's a lots to do lobster stew yeah so all the time we're just hollering out you know lobster stew lobster stew so you know you pick up those things and they go in the movie and I'm glad we got in there so let's do it you listening to Q I'm talking to jarred key SoCo creator and star of the hit series Letterkenny you're going to walk me through some Letterkenny slang today and I think it's only fair as we do that we're going to share some just land slang with you great we'll go show it for sure so I'll say I'll say the term that used Letterkenny you tell me what it is okay and I'll try to give you the new slant equivalent right how do you feel that I love it alright the first one is that 10 by 10 fly well 10 ten ply refers to how soft somebody is emotionally and we use that in the hockey players episode of the original web series and it almost didn't make it and I'm like this will go and this will go over people's heads I don't think enough people were understand that two plies soft toilet paper so temp I would just be ridiculously soft and possibly soft and it almost didn't make it in it ended up being the most quoted line from from the thing maybe even you know goddess in in the door head Bell but yeah that's that that's what it refers to I think back off back home we'd say you're a silk soo okay she's learned a ton of new one yeah you're lucky I love you Sookie oh you say you're your kindergarten baby actually good baby I would say that one - yeah yeah second one is electric lettuce electric lettuce electric lettuce the Johnny red I won from a my pal Trevor risk the freeform herbal jazz like that last just other ways to say marijuana my buddy I thought about this for a long time - the bunch of them but I want to credit my buddy Pat Ward who I saw and once say to someone nah man I don't touch the laser lettuce you can have laser lettuce man yeah it is all your good good good alliteration there my favorite device Tilly time Billy time did you have alliteration yes Tilly time this is a one one of our cast members Tyler Johnson favorite Lofton say it as a joke just kind of walking into a bar like there's going to be trouble there never is rarely is but in hockey another word for fight is tilt and then that's been shortened down to Tilly and if it's time for a tilt it's it's still a time so to fight on the ice I think I'll be got four that is scrap oh yeah if you say scrap to you right yep yep but then the the Donnybrook yeah donnybrooks a little different because the Donnybrook refers to a scrap involving more than two people so that would be a line brawl I'd say as a Donnybrook or a bench brawl is a Donnybrook so they're more people involved I think we'd say like all hand scrap all him yeah I'll call handle scrap it all hands yeah man all hands were scrapping out there today man speed buzz all hand throwing in yeah all hand throwing hey and I want a writing credit on this show at Texas size ten-four okay Texas sized 10-4 is incredib my pal Dave Westra with that one the first time I heard it I think it's pretty standard trucker talk over the CB radio is a lot of male truckers and around Listowel and you know the time you'd go for a ride with with a buddy and his dad and you'd hear different things over the CB radio so I think that's a popular trucker way to say understood my buddy ed was telling me yesterday that where he's from into Gould just outside of New Zealand kind of farm country outside of st. John just aside of st. John's they've started using texas-sized 10-4 okay oh that's not made a dance very good we would just say knows no need to be like man I'm yeah I'm going down the store today I'm gonna pick up some milk promoter oh yes man knows like oh yeah of course you are or I know you are I know that is yeah yeah yeah man it I took I took French class here today and I found like knows man knows man knows we also my favorites is my buddy Andrew says he called all video games tapes so I'll be like now I'll come over play hockey tapes what about us and O's sandals is one of you serious one of these silly abbreviations that kids on skates are using these days it kind of just abbreviate everything Sando is short for sandwich a P is short for appetizer nappy short for nap or napkin handi P instead of a hundred percent now that's that that's the lingo the kids are running with and I just find it endlessly hilarious so happy to exploit it where I can the one I hate in your show is prakit is a mammal gate but after practice I decided me dies yeah I'm not I'm not a fan of that one but if we reform I think back home there's no I asked around a lot this is the hardest one and the closest I got was my buddy Dave Bridger who's from Labrador said there used to be this meal they would serve at the restaurant in lab city and he had restaurant in quotes and it was a two slices of white bread with gravy over it and they call it bread dinner that that can't be more than two bucks I would say I'd say they'd knocked it up to five bucks laboratory and tried to get stuff up there yeah you say it's a Bridger I've got a pal Daniel Bridger from from Newfoundland I know Danny Bridger you know Danny yeah yeah yeah yeah he's doing some writing in in Montreal right now may I see him from time to time this is the most this is the most Canadian interview I've ever done a match and the last one is curtain air curtain air I went to school with Danny Bridgers sister Emily okay yeah yeah yeah she's shooting so now - she's doing yeah students and stuff yeah it went down - yeah yeah curtain air curtain air everyone's laughing everyone is laughing she's laughing at my ex plaintiffs so yeah pretty near is I think a fairly specific regional dialect to our area of Ontario because you know you certainly don't say I pretty near put my truck into the ditch you'd say pert near put my truck into the ditch or prettier I mean a good way to start that too would be to get somebody's attention you say like do you want to know what but you'd say it's so fast it's almost like going to what hurt near put my truck in the ditch today yeah today it would be more like 2d 2d yeah Monday Tuesday I'd say like I yeah I parked my rig handy to the yeah handy handy yeah you know I guess instead of ditch you could say rhubarb to put her in the rhubarb oh yeah yeah yeah handy or broadside is another 150 your bra you went up broadside him okay yeah yeah what up broadside them that is a good Gary this is so much fun for me a feminine man hey don't sweat thank you for having me
