Let's all judge the new Prime Video interface -- together!

hello everybody happy weekend to you it's so weekend it it's it is so weekend that i'm going i'm just going full long hair don't care so happy friday i hope that uh hope that it's going well uh for those of you who are getting prepped for your weekend i hope that you've got something fun planned for today for this live stream we have this plan we're going to be looking at the new and hopefully improved prime video interface i've stopped here on this screen now to to be clear i have looked at it okay so last week or what was it what a couple weeks ago when it came out i popped in on my roku and was like okay let's uh let's see what it is and i only looked for about 30 seconds before i was like you know what it would be more fun to do this um on on the stream and somebody brought it up last week and i was like huh funny you should mention that so so here we are let's see if i can get this i need to wrangle this mic into submission there we go that's a little better um anyway so that's what we're going to be doing today is taking a look through this and basically just judging the heck out of it okay so we're going to either confirm that the the prime video people have done a good job with this or we're going to rip it apart and tell them that nope it's another miss because they actually did they did an update uh an interface update would have been last year sometime it was it feels fairly recent but i am getting kind of old so it feels pretty recent that they did an app redesign and it was like kind of a half-hearted attempt at an app redesign and i know this one was a little a little more thorough so that's what we're going to be doing and i hope that um i hope comments are working okay we had this um we had an issue with uh socrates who said that he needed to create his own channel now to enter the chat and i don't know if that's a one-off thing i i haven't seen and like if that's an update i went into the channel settings to make sure there wasn't some you know box that wasn't checked i didn't see anything like that so let me know if you can if you're having problems if well i guess i should say this way if any of you have run into a similar issue okay new look welcome to the redesign prime video let's blow this up and make me a little smaller okay find it faster new slide new side navigation so presumably something here on the left side makes it easier to find something to watch that'd be great see what's yours icons show what's included and more options okay great so the blue check included for you the little shopping bag rent buy or subscribe and ads free with ads this is actually good i like this this was one of my complaints uh and they did address this somewhat in the like i said the kind of um half-hearted redesign that they did uh what like a year ago um they kind of addressed this and started to put all the imdb tv stuff that's what it was at the time they put that like in its own section uh so that it was easier to tell if if something was going to be ad supported or not so that was good but if this um if these icons do what they're saying they're gonna do then great i think that'll be even better so i like that all right let's go let's have us a look here all right so right away um we've got oh oh so we've got an auto play so if i just sit here for long enough it kind of auto plays this so uh and and you know what okay first thing we're gonna do let's let's check first thing can i turn that off okay so i want to go to my settings we'll come back to all the rest of that stuff in a bit uh but let's go to previews mute previews okay well previews automatically play without sound well that's something i guess and i guess that's all that we're gonna get to do i wish they would let me turn that off completely but oh well okay so that's already like yeah you can mute the previews and that's something but they should let me turn them off they used to honestly was it amazon they used to i yeah who knows who knows who it was all right let's go back to our homepage there so now when it plays i don't know if you could hear it but it's the tv right behind me here and yes sure enough it is muted um but that is honestly a little annoying um but there's our uh it's got right up above that more details it's got that blue check mark included with prime okay great so now we've got the uh continue watching um as you can see i have extremely extremely good taste in television uh okay so oh my goodness somebody somebody coming in from trinidad hello dexter good to have you man we're pulling in people from all over the place uh all right so okay we've got our continue watching on the home page that's exactly where it should be good prime amazon originals i actually don't mind this this does actually somebody said um reminiscent stacy on uh on facebook's is almost reminiscent of the netflix interface and this makes me agree with that where this feels very much like what netflix does with its originals where it's got the kind of taller it's almost like a dvd sized um uh thumbnail or you know shaped thumbnail and then it kind of expands outward um but i you know it's one of those things this i i don't mind them being kind of amazon centric with something like this because um if i'm subscribed to a service i find it valuable to know what am i getting here from you what are you what are you making for me not just um you know not just what are you licensing uh you know what titles do you have available but what titles have you made that i'm not gonna get to watch anywhere else you know and so that i i do like this i find this valuable um oh man reacher uh male incompetence hour that's you just watch this guy and you're like oh yeah no i if only i were a man it's such a good show though i really liked it um okay so yeah i like that row down to subscriptions we've got my subscriptions okay so if you use um prime to subscribe to other things then they'll show up here i don't do that i don't do that with prime i don't do it with roku i don't do it with anybody i'm always a direct subscriber but this is here and i wonder is there going to be a way for me to hide these rows like could i could i customize this i just hit my little that little more icon the one with the three stripes i just and yes this is the old remote i'm sorry deal with it i guess just hit that nothing nothing happening there i wonder if i go over to my settings can i customize my home page preview subscriptions manage content about contact nope can't okay so if i go back uh okay so it takes me back to the top that's fine it's fine all right so under that prime movies we think you'll like okay so this is more licensed content okay i don't know why anybody would want to watch the hobbit movies except for the first half of the first one that was fun okay action adventure prime prime prime okay this is good i like this oh oh okay all right here we go uh let's see prime top 10 in the us weirdly it um it hides that little the title of what so right here as i move right and left you can still see prime mystery and thriller movies right there above it and i can see down below it says prime top 10 in the us but if i go down there it disappears i wonder if that's on purpose or it not that it's a huge deal you can kind of figure out what this is all about but um but it's a little weird i think um and this is another netflix-y thing and this is you know um sometimes these uh these streaming services companies get so wrapped up in being original what are we gonna do differently what are we gonna um you know how are we gonna really stand out from the crowd and sometimes you just have to go look at at who's been doing it the most successfully and just go you know what they've had a lot of great ideas there's a reason that netflix has been so successful um and stuff like this it's like yeah let's let's have a road that's got the top 10 in the us great you know um i think that's fine so i love the hobbit movie that's how the lord of the rings starts oh i wish i'm uh so i'm a giant giant nerd um and tolkien is my specialty and uh i i'm not i i actually am not a purist by any stretch but um but it's still it was too painful for me for me to watch the uh most of the hobbit movies anyway uh they're trying to mirror netflix kinda yeah exactly didn't peacock recently update their interface too well maybe we can check in on that um okay so let's let's let's keep going down ooh let's see mc says i don't like it don't like the new interface huh um well we're gonna keep going and see how we feel about it um let's see prime oh they've got psych we don't need to go to peacock that's the only reason i ever go to peacock that is peacock right yeah um okay so we keep going down ah we have to go down pretty far to find freev which frankly that's right and correct and proper um so how far down did we have to go pretty far so we're on one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven oh good so the top ten rows are all prime good great grand wonderful no yelling on the bus that was for all of you children of the 80s okay um so good we got freebie prime member deals okay so uh obviously i want to know how much it is to rent rocky iv so it's got the little the yellow icon oh free trial of amc plus rent or buy oh cool so they do have a deal on this one oh i could buy it for five bucks i'm not going to but i could [Music] obviously rocky one is the best rocky movie but rocky iv is probably the most fun so i can watch that one basically on repeat live stuff coming up okay so now oh wait we're getting down to watch it again okay um and yeah let me let me assure you that dreamcatcher is terrible recently i recently read the book and uh reviewed it on uh on the podcast a different podcast that i run and so i watched the movie to um you know just kind of like to have something to compare it against and it was awful um all right so yeah a lot of this other stuff kind of gets buried so what i'm curious about is um if i'm in here if i want to get to say live and upcoming events am i going to have to scroll all the way down or on that sidebar here is there going to be an option for me to find live stuff um you know if they're going to be making more of an effort to have you know baseball and sports and what is this music and arts festival if they're going to have more of an effort to do live stuff i want to be able to find it fairly quickly and that was like what the 13th row down okay so all that being said oh okay cool so hang on that was that was interesting so i go all the way over here oh no you know and i want to get back to my to the left-hand screen here or the left-hand options uh when i hit the back button it took me to the first option which i think is good didn't automatically open that up but now i just have to push one more and that opens it up okay so we've got the store free with ads and my stuff okay so that's like if i save something or if i buy something rent something um so that's probably got like a few movies that i bought um oh yeah that's right i turned on remember when i turned on species for uh some video i did a while ago so that's still on there um this is one of my favorite uh you know everybody has movies they like that nobody else likes this is this is my favorite of those or one of my favorites um okay so that's kind of like a continue watching stuff purchases and rentals there you go um cool all right so over here let's check out uh let's check out the store i'm curious how they lay this out i like that they oh interesting okay um i like that in the category on the home page they had uh deals and so i'm curious how you know oh hey there it is hey deals cool so it's uh it this looks like it's probably the exact same row as what we had before um on the home page but there it is okay so some more prime member deals movie bundles okay cool so let's go back up here let's go to let's just go to all and see what it's got i like this a lot so the top ten what are other people buying it's um sometimes you know you don't always want to go with the crowd you want to watch what you want to watch but it's a good way to get some inspiration like what are people actually watching what can i you know maybe talk with my friends about um so yeah i like that they put that on there in the the purchase or rent section as well um wait what was this uh see this is what i'm talking about i want the i want the little i want the the thing that's up there that says top 10 channels in the us i want that right here channels but it disappears as soon as you go okay wow that's yeah it's very odd subscriptions you might like popular movies okay oh man so bad so bad okay cool all right let's see what you guys have to uh species is one of your favorite uh i know um species will always hold a special place in my heart because i think i was like 11 when i saw it and it was my first on-screen boobs uh you know back in the 90s whenever it was and so you know so it'll always um i occupy that special place for me but no groundhog day is probably the greatest film ever made and i i will put it up against anything um it is i'll okay how about i soften that and say it is one of the greatest films ever made uh but no the one i was talking about was knowing with nicolas cage um yeah smash that like button people uh when you buy or rent something on prime video how long do you get to keep it all right this is a tricky question so let's go uh to my stuff we'll go down to um purchases and rentals movies all right so these are movies that i've bought over the years obviously i haven't bought very many um but every once in a while i will like i think shattered glass i wanted to watch it i've been meaning to watch it for years um and so i finally saw it for three bucks on you know to purchase so i purchased it and it's still here um there there is a chance when you purchase something on prime video it theoretically will be available in your library forever great in also in theory they can take these away anytime there's a little clause in there that says when you purchase this we still like it's still our movie we're putting it in your library forever but it's still our movie and we can rescind your right to watch it anytime and this has happened with uh you know a few movies over the years it's not common at this point but it's definitely one of those things that happens every once in a while and it's one of those hold on to your physical media moments um so that's what happens when you buy it okay so i i think i bought a goofy movie for my kids to watch like five years ago and it's still here okay when you rent something um how does it go you have 30 days to start it and once you start it you have 48 hours to finish it so there that's uh hopefully that answers that question um [Laughter] i need y'all to increase profit oh boy let's see i used to watch highlander when it was on analog tv uh it's awesome i love that show yeah me too i used to watch it then too um well okay so the reason the top 10 heading disappears is because each tile is labeled with a large number from one to ten i get it but let's go back to our store here and here's here's why i don't care for it so like you say it says top ten purchases in the us right now when we go down there it'll disappear and now like you can still see it way up there in the top left corner um but the reason i don't like it is because now i don't know when i when i go down here it's like wait what's the what's the difference because this one is labeled one through ten as well wait wait what's the difference and now you know after a few minutes of you know dedicated uh browsing i kind of i know okay i can look up there and see what it is um but it's not necessarily super intuitive um to know what the difference is between those two rows anyway that's that's why i wish they would leave it there all right uh let's see i never knew do they give your money back when they do that like at least some of it no they do not they do not um yeah yeah it would be i guess it would be good if they did but uh nope they don't okay okay so let's see what else we got that was our store we got the free with ads so basically this is going to be freev right um we've got all movies tv shows free v free v free v yeah yeah this is basically your your freebie um stuff oh hey fun fact did i ever tell you guys um so this mythica a quest for heroes this is the first movie in a five movie series uh and it was made right here in utah and uh and i was i was uh an extra in the fifth movie so they they needed some extras and somebody found our our nerd podcast and uh and sent me a note said hey we need some extras for this big battle scene do you want to come put on some armor and swing some dull swords around we're like yeah obviously so that's what we did it was fun [Laughter] so okay where was i free yeah it's all just free v which makes a lot of sense i want to see i'm going to go down here see if there's anything that isn't freebie um but yeah basically if you have top 10 free with that that's really far down that's the last row on here that's really interesting they should really move that up okay i kind of want to watch that i remember that coming out a long time ago but i should have a look at that okay cool there we go that's that's your free v stuff uh if we go here does it can take me back to the yeah to the top so we can separate movies and tv shows um all right i'm trying to think is there anything else on the store i know there are a couple things let's see um we've got rent or buy we've got channels um what what's that's weird why oh all and rent or buy so i guess yeah it's just kind of combining everything okay fine uh we got five how's the if i have to search something out what's something i should search how about one of my other favorite you know like i was saying movies that i like that everybody else hates uh my wife and i went and saw sucker punch when it came out in the theaters and we were both like that was fun and then we get home and everybody's like this is the worst movie ever made and so i i still have this uh okay so we got renter buy let's go with the extended cut yeah director's cut uh more purchase options right there watchpad i do like that they they that this has been integrated into a lot of uh services now i like that more purchase options buy movie by movie okay cool so just curious how the the search function looked let's go back to our home page and see what you guys have to say okay so that's that's uh it took us about 20 minutes and we did our little tour of the um the prime video interface let's see what you guys have to say um hey you know i'm glad you found our channel too lance uh it's it is good to have you here it's good to have everybody here um i i legit look forward to these uh friday live streams this does not feel this doesn't feel like work to me it just feels like fun and you guys make it that way so uh let's see make a review on showtime says mamakila with showtime it's i could i could do that um show time more so i i think more so than with other apps um you know things like uh things like prime video netflix uh hulu hbo max whatever more so than those uh showtime is more just like hey do you like the stuff on here if you like the stuff go ahead and get it um the showtime is not uh an app that is known for um you know innovating with the interface or you know anything like that um so i so i absolutely could and maybe i should but i'm not sure off the top of my head i'm just not sure how i would do that review um without it basically devolving into hey do you like these 10 shows good then you should get showtime you know does that make sense um but it's a good thought let's see jc says i'm not a fan of the new interface i thought the other wasn't great but i'm not a fan of this one at all really you know that's that's fair the one thing i would say um is maybe give it time it could be it often is the case that you know we what is it i know what i like and i like what i know and so it's like right i knew how to get around the old prime video interface and so this new one uh it's i don't know where everything is well give it a week um use it every day for a week and you'll start to get to know it a little bit better um at least you know that's my theory maybe not maybe you'll just continue to hate it and that's totally fine so anyway all right okay did imdb just change into a streaming app uh yeah it used to be imdb tv so imdb was uh an independent website and then amazon bought it years ago well that would have been four years ago maybe something like that they bought it and then um uh they created imdb tv as a place to house their free commercial supported content at least i think this is how it went i don't think imdb tv existed before that i could be wrong um but anyway uh it just it's it's such a mouthful to say it's not it's not fun to have to say imdb tv a lot and so a few months ago they just changed it to freebie which i i don't love it as a name but it is better you got to admit it's better so all right all right i have an interesting theory for i you know anytime fredon leads with i've got an interesting theory i i don't even i haven't even read the rest of the comment i just pull it up and all right let's see what freighton has to say uh let's see the mainly do a video we all frown upon price increases but yet everyone always says insert streaming service uh needs more originals well yeah yeah like more new stuff original content requires highly paid lead actors most of the time those price increase warranted in their eyes yeah and it's yeah it's not just the talent um but that is yeah obviously that's a huge expense if you want to get um you know if you want to get tom cruise in your movie it's going to cost you right uh so yeah that is definitely an expense um so what um so oh everyone always says insert streaming service needs more originals well more new original content requires highly paid lead actors most of the time thus price increase warranted in their eyes yeah that's kind of what it comes down to what's what is more expensive is it more expensive to make content or to license content well it's a lot more expensive to make content and so you know back in the halcyon days of netflix or you know only licensing content they could just get tons of stuff because it was fairly cheap and they could only you know charge you eight bucks a month and you could stream it all right um well once they got into the content creation game you know like you say prices have to go up um and that's that's definitely going to be true of something like netflix where the economics of netflix are basically subscribe or die uh or you know get subscribers um if they don't have subscribers they they die um that's not true for every streaming service it's not true not true for apple tv plus it's not true for prime video i should nod my head this way prime video um but yeah generally that's uh that's uh that's true i i choose to uh put a question mark after this and just say yeah yeah i'm live let's see i have a oh i have a live tv section on prime video interesting um i do have uh i'm curious i've got this is on my fire stick is that what you're talking about there is a live tv section here or it's a fire tv cube i guess but i was going in here to prime video because the interface here is obviously a little a little different than what we were talking about with the prime app so i just went direct into the prime video app so that we could see this interface this should uh roughly be the same interface across your fire tv device your roku device your apple tv device whatever it should this should not change across devices whereas the other one is specific to their device okay let's see what else seems like a lot of apps now are going for that sidebar pop-up menu because peacock got it just about a week ago as well um yeah it's i mean it's really it makes a lot of sense you even see it on the free ones um you know crackle does it tubey does it um so and i like it it's uh what's um i haven't it's been a hot minute since i've been into pluto tv um but they had theirs kind of like up at the top and you had to it was like it was a maze of well okay now i hit the back button now i hit the up button now i go here and it was tough to get to it whereas with the stuff on the left side of the screen it seems to me to make it a little bit easier um and that's another one one of those things i you know mentioned this a few minutes ago you know somebody people have been saying oh it feels an awful lot like netflix and i'm like great great uh you take the things that netflix does really well and just say good idea we'll do that too if you can come up with your own stuff great you know do your own stuff as well but like this left hand the sidebar is one of those so i'm i'm happy for it uh make an updated review on discovery plus i'm a little bit um hesitant to do that until we get more information on what's going to happen with discovery plus and hbo max um i could but you know i just have to do another one in a few months when they when they make another announcement so uh but yeah it could use an update that's for sure uh there used to be a section that was just prime 4k movies i don't see that at all anymore that's a great point that's a that's a really good point let's um uh let's bring this back up here so yeah i didn't see anything on the home page that was uh 4k dramas preview okay yeah now we're getting into the other stuff okay so no no nothing in the 4k yeah no i don't think so i think you're right so my question is do they just they got rid of it for a reason right it could be that um not enough people were using that as a decision maker i assume most of their originals will be in 4k but like um i don't know the 355 i've never even heard of this uh let's see is it gonna say 4k says uhd so it doesn't even say 4k necessarily but it does say uhd which should be 4k interesting huh you know that's that's jc thank you very much for bringing that up that's something i might look into have there been um you know sometimes uh companies will they'll uh focus group stuff like this to find out well and they've got their own data you know what are people clicking on is is the term 4k no longer um a draw the way that it once was or that we assumed that it once was maybe it never was i don't know that's interesting though that's that's a good catch uh i am always right this is true this is true everybody raise a mug to the fact that i'm always right um okay all right you know politics ruins everything including this channel so careful uve we uh we don't get political around here because uh it's just boring let's see how many different hairstyles have you had in the last two years before plus no my hairstyle has been i have hair and i lived through a pandemic um and so yeah my i just didn't cut my hair during the pandemic and at this point i probably should but uh it's kind of fun i'm enjoying having long hair i actually i started the channel uh back in 2016 with long hair long-ish hair and it was terrible um i you know i didn't style it right i wasn't washing it correctly all that stuff and so it looked awful and so finally one day i cut it um and then when the pandemic hit i was like i guess i'll try again uh all right oh that's right chicken soup just acquired red box for 370 million dollars [Music] that is something we could dive into okay paramount plus is a sleeper app excellent content and service all right fair enough um i have bed bugs on my roku i have bed bugs on my roku but i can't download any movies on that thing i'm having a hard time doing that like literal bed bugs living in your roku device that doesn't sound nice um oh my gosh yeah okay so earlier somebody said smash that like button i hope you did that on yesterday's video it was i i wrestled with that one a little bit i i wondered how you know maybe i should like really let loose with my opinions on this uh the price increase and whatnot and i kind of put some of my opinions in at the end but mostly it was just like as i was researching it i was like this is crazy complicated uh you know for something like this to there have been more complicated things cough cough at t uh and their whole streaming ecosystem three or four years ago but so there have been more complicated things but compared to you can get disney plus for seven bucks a year or seven bucks a month or 70 bucks a year it was crazy complicated and so i was like you know what i'm just gonna do a video explaining this so and i know i got i i had one typo on screen and sorry about that but uh um but hopefully it was kind of clear um glad glad it was helpful to you and i hope some other people um as well let's see i have redbox on my roku there's a hard time uh gives you a hard time downloading any movies on there um even when you pay for them that's why i go to prime or voodoo yeah um that yeah prime video it's one of those things where it's like they they're they're big and they're big for a reason right because they get a lot of that stuff right uh with something like redbox they don't have the same kind of resources that uh that amazon does and so it's harder to get your app just right and you know making it reliable and all that stuff so yeah it's uh makes sense if you had some issues with that and don't cut my hair uh one day i will one day i will i at the day i cut my hair i have to have something interesting about me right and so if i cut my hair i'll just go get like some face tattoos um and start my rap career uh i i think this could really work i think i don't see any downside i don't see how this would be a bad idea at all um my gosh this thing is not working okay well uh thank you frayden yesterday's video is good i appreciate that um talks about walmart teaming up with paramount plus yeah there's always talks about walmart teaming up with somebody right there's uh who was it wasn't there a rumor we just talked about last week of walmart teaming up with somebody else netflix or i i can't remember yeah there's lots of rumors out there um definitely one of those ones we want to wait and see about right um this is this is weird i wonder if i can pull up i wonder if i can pull up that uh that chart okay let's see if i can find it [Music] they're not oh come on it's so weird oh you know what i've got it i know i'll just go to my own video and i will um find the what i'm looking for the chart the chart that uh that disney put out there okay disney plus price increase blah blah blah there's my chart and now i can open it up so i can share it with you guys all right so i'm going to get rid of that for just a moment so that we can take a look at this all right i did it um all right here's what we want to look at so freighton says i don't get why there's only one annual option for the ad free disney plus here's what we're talking about this is bananas to me absolutely crazy disney plus you can get basic with ads for eight bucks a month but no no annual option okay if you go premium the no ads the current version of disney plus yeah it's gonna cost you 11 bucks a month or 110 bucks a year okay fine hulu basic has the annual plan hulu premium does not what was the reasoning there i'm i'm actually i'm genuinely curious about this what was you know i want to i want to sit in the the boardroom when somebody says uh somebody says all right here's how we're going to do this here's how we're going to split up the monthly and the annual and somebody says no no we can't do we can't do an annual plan on the on hulu premium like why um i don't i don't understand it there there's got to be a reason i you know as i've said before i i try to give companies like this uh the benefit of the doubt with decisions like this um not because i have any special love for disney i don't um but because i know that it's made up of people right and these are people making these decisions and so it's got to be something there has to be some logic behind it but for the life of me i can't come up with what that would be so who knows who knows um don't don't yeah well uh all right so let's go back to this one all right so on the prime interface let's go back to the home screen oh i guess we are on the home screen oh interesting so i want to go back to the home screen i want to go back to the top but it's not let me do that if i hit the back button again ah there we go that takes me back up top um let's see included with prime prime prime i do want to see sorry let me tell you what i'm doing right here i i kind of skipped over this um the featured content that they have up top here um what i'm curious about is so the first four were prime this is free trial free trial vix plus okay so this is still basically an ad bar um yeah they're advertising their own content first so that you don't get too annoyed like hey if you're in here you have prime yeah you can watch this stuff great um but then yeah they're selling these slots um which yeah i don't have a huge problem with um i do kind of wish that when you hit the home button it would take you here to this row where you can do all movies tvs sports oh hey sports we should check that out um i wish they would take you here instead of up here where you get that auto play ad thing but oh well i guess um sports okay so here's where i can get my live sports coming up um okay cool sorry i feel like i'm getting just a little sidetracked oh speaking of sidetracked anybody watch the astros with the white sox yesterday i won't spoil the score but it money they already do i guarantee it there's no escaping them they're too big um took a lot of their free content uh that i watched and put it on freev and now i have to watch ads yeah it did happen with a few things that's it it's true but um you think about it this way uh they're trying to serve two market segments there are the people like me and you space ghost who do not like ads i hate watching ads especially if it's a tv show or movie um and it's interrupting my content i hate ads it's a little different if i'm watching a baseball game i'm like hey we got 90 seconds before they start playing again fine i'll watch a few ads um not that big a deal but like tv shows and movies awful but there are like i said they're serving two types of people there's those like us who hate ads and those who don't mind ads who say you know what i would rather you know spend five minutes an hour watching ads than pay you know x amount of dollars to get rid of them um and they're so they're trying to serve both of those uh kind of constituent groups and so if they just took their worst stuff and put that on freev that would not be a very attractive service and there are those who don't mind the ads but they want good stuff to watch as well so you want to load some of your good stuff onto the the free with ad stuff so i get why it makes you upset because i'm with you i hate ads but um but from their perspective you you want to make both uh parties as happy as possible and that's that's how they decided to do it um oh worst value in streaming that gets worse by the week i don't know if i'd go that far still um i've got a couple of kids who love that disney vault you know and so uh so it's for our family it is definitely worth it um but uh let's see okay oh i'm afraid did i do something i did something that made liam uh facepalm i don't know what it was but right let's see uh oh okay here's an interesting question so we'll uh we'll get rid of this and it's kind of a channel question hey you can still see it behind me there uh what happened to chantel and steve they aren't making videos anymore still to see to shock and want around which is cool um yeah i think uh to be honest so i i don't work in the office anymore i'm an independent contractor at this point just like steve and tashaka and and juan so i'm not sure if chantel is there at this point i couldn't tell you um but steve and tashak and juan came on as independent contractors um and uh now i am one as well and steve moved on to to do some other stuff that's all no drama or anything just uh steve headed off to do some other things so um he made great videos about uh about home security and smart home stuff and and i think he's still doing that elsewhere uh but we still got to shaka and one who make awesome videos as well so uh but it's a good question um you know one who know who knows maybe one day i won't be here i don't know i don't know if i could quit you guys i can't do it [Laughter] all right let's see let's see ah the new prime interface similar to tivo stream 4k interface oh that's interesting i should plug my tivo stream 4k back in i haven't done it in well over a year um and so i'd be curious to see what kind of updates i've missed um i really liked it when it came out the the big problem with the tivo stream 4k was that when it came out uh it was right before uh google released their new chromecast we should stop calling that calling it the new chromecast because it's like two two plus years old now but when they released the new chromecast it was it didn't look similar necessarily in the layout but a lot of the things that the tivo stream tried to do the chromecast did just a little better um and so i was like oh man the tivo stream 4k is awesome oh man the chromecast is so great uh so i kind of forgot about it because i enjoyed the the chromecast so much um but yeah i should plug that back in because i i've heard that that you know they've kept up with their updates and whatnot and they're still going and i really liked it so um all right i pay for the ad plan because some con some content contains ads anyway i assume you mean ads anyway so is that on hulu um i guess that makes sense yeah there are some things that they they legally have to put ads on it's like in the contract when they license content that they have to put ads on some things uh obviously live content is gonna have ads but anyway and so yeah that does happen but not enough like i don't run into it enough that it's uh an issue for me so i i pay for the no ad plan or at least you know for a while i do we'll see what i do later um don't mind ads and shows but in movies they just kill the movie for me oh yeah i know totally especially with classic shows um oh well uh how old am i uh when i say classic shows i should say classically structured shows that are built with commercial breaks in mind um so stuff that was built for network or or cable distribution um so you know when i when i'm on hbo max and i'm watching friends uh like that was they that was structured with commercial breaks in mind right um last night i was watching the chappelle show on netflix and it's actually a little bit awkward to watch the chappelle show without ads uh just because they you know he very clearly says hey we're gonna go do some ads we'll be right back and then they're just back right so sometimes it feels a little bit weird so but but movies obviously are not built with commercials in mind um so yeah now i think i i'm basically with you although i will say it sounds like i probably mind them in shows more than you do but i can understand why you say what you do um and let's see i got a refurbished tivo way back when it first came out hey nice previous owner brought the lifetime subscription there you go that's how you do it that's how you do it i love this i have ads too oh hey oh okay sounds like you guys are basically with me on that one um let's see uh yeah so oh this is interesting um i haven't done much i haven't done much at all about atsc3 uh which is the the new um broadcast um what do they what do they call it the oh gosh what's the word is escaping me um whatever in order to broadcast things in higher resolution they're they're using atsc 3.0 so that's basically you know what your antenna picks up the the actual network broadcast tv that still exists is still being literally it's over the air right um and yeah i haven't done much with it anyway amazon has made the decision to stop the sailor production of their fire tv recast just when atsc 3 is on the horizon they must feel streaming is the only future not ota correct uh yeah it's and the recast the recast sold pretty well um at the very beginning but then i think a lot of people realized they weren't using it as much as they thought they were going to um and sales i i'm not saying nobody buys it now uh but sales largely dried up compared to what it was at the beginning um as more and more people got into streaming and just got there you know they got their dvrs through youtube tv or hulu live or whatever um and the so the the recast kind of took a hit from all that um at least this is the story as i understand it you know amazon if you're watching please correct me if you need to but um anyway yeah it's just uh and atsc3 yeah did i say that right atsc3 yeah um is not going to save it it'll be good for those who uh who do watch shows over the air um especially sports it'll be great for those who watch sports with an antenna but it's not going to this is not something that's going to bring people back to broadcast television um you know if they're done with broadcast television they're probably just done with it um you know certainly in the vast majority of cases and so it's not going to be worth much for amazon to invest a bunch to try to make recast happen when yeah there's just not as much of a market as maybe they hoped do you think apple will drop the bomb on us at their iphone event next month and announce the nfl sunday ticket deal oh my gosh that would be amazing i find it interesting that they appear to be having the event earlier before the football season starts oh man um do i think so i hope so let's put it that way i hope so um [Music] i've stopped trying to predict exactly what's going to happen at these uh apple events um because i've been surprised and i've been burned before so oops so i haven't um so i haven't done a lot of guesswork on that stuff but yeah i hope so i hope that they do i hope that they get the deal i guess i guess i i'm not sure if i care that much whether it's apple or amazon um but i'm just glad i'm sincerely i'm just glad that it's going to streaming that it's going somewhere other than directv i'm thrilled so yeah i know i know i know i i know and by the way nice uh nice avatar good i just watched that like two days ago uh okay oh i hate ads so much i even broke down and got youtube premium i hear that i need to do that because um and it's one of those things that i've resisted for so long because maybe just because i've been conditioned by youtube to watch ads and it's and so and they're also shorter and most of them are skippable after you know six seconds or so um and so i don't mind them as much as you know a four-minute ad break in the middle of a movie um but i wonder how much of my life i have spent watching youtube ads so um just hit the mute button uh yeah that's that's one way to do it okay i love hbo max sure hopes us love doesn't destroy it yeah we talked about that a couple weeks ago i hope so too um we'll see we'll see the only way i will ever get apple tv would be for the nfl well that's too bad because you're missing out on some really good content i assume you mean apple tv plus and it is really good stuff i just finished the third season of for all mankind um and that's a show that like it has its ups and downs sometimes it's a little slower than i would like but boy did they finish season three strong uh and i am thrilled that they are doing a season four so yeah love love me some apple tv plus okay you guys i'm gonna start uh yeah yeah it's a banksy i know i've seen it before it's fun um i'm gonna start the process of wrapping it up so get your last questions in um i'll stick around for another uh three or four minutes and i'll answer a couple more um yeah this is a thing i don't mind i don't really mind ads but in some cases they're added in awkward spots in the shows or movies which can be very annoying absolutely and it's something it's one of those jobs that used to be done by people by a person by people that is now um done by machines uh where you know if uh if a movie you know i used to watch uh speed on tnt or whatever you know back in the 90s after it came out and um you know somebody at tnt would go and they would find the ad breaks and put them in there and so they could find some reasonable places to put in ad breaks um and now it's all just automated a computer takes a look at the waveforms you know see where okay where's a break in the audio it seems like they can even do like the color grading has shifted so obviously that's a new scene okay that good that must be a good spot for an ad and for the most part it works okay but sometimes you get some bizarre ad breaks in shows and movies uh it's it can get funny uh let's see [Laughter] uh oh interesting even for this chat usually there's a commercial or two and chat starts the last two weeks there's been an ad in the middle of the chat which left me oh interesting like in the middle of this live stream interesting okay uh yeah luckily this is a thing that is becoming less of an issue but it is still a little bit of an issue sometimes having loud commercials um there was legislation about this years ago about what um volume or what you know what loudness you were able to broadcast commercials in because of this and that that did not exist for streaming so things went a little hog wild for a while uh i don't do they they must not have that legislation for radio because radio ads are still unbelievably annoying um yeah what do i think of d stream not much i've i've played around with it just a little bit like on a guest account but it's it's not a service that i've ever had reason to use um or had reason to really get to know uh other than its pricing and features and all that stuff that you kind of have to be able to rattle off but as far as practical experience i i don't i don't think much of it at all if that makes sense but it's a good question okay okay oh on youtube it doesn't work properly that's why i pay for premium yeah it's a so as a youtube creator um on videos i can go in and specify here's where i want the ad breaks but it's laborious you know it takes a little time and by the time you're done making a video and uploading a video and writing a description and coming up with a title and creating a thumbnail and all this stuff they're like hey do you want us to figure out the ad breaks for you yes please oh my gosh i'm so done with this just do it for me so yeah so that's why it works that way on on youtube okay i'm just seeing what else i uh need to address uh do you think hbo max will be what it is now after discovery is done with it no it will be different uh the only question is how how different and in what ways um yeah yeah just skip them on youtube it makes a lot of sense so let's see andrew says d stream is getting better the only reason i have uh to use it so i can watch sports yeah that's basically the only reason i think anybody should get a live tv streaming service and this is why i think this is why i'm so disappointed in fubo which was originally you know they're like oh it's all sports we're we're gonna be sports people uh that the sports streaming service and then they started bringing on all the adjacent cable channels um you know like a lot of the discovery networks and the the the disney stuff that they had to bring on to get espn and all that stuff and and i just i wish it could just be pure sports and have the price drop quite a bit uh if they could figure out a way to do that i might actually subscribe to a live tv streaming service um let's see if you're a youtuber shouldn't you get a discount on youtube premium at least you'd think so wouldn't you boy oh boy just take it out of my uh take it out of my check every month that uh that teeny teeny tiny little check they sent me for my other channel um i have i have a smaller channel with like uh i think it's at about 8 000 subscribers right now i get a very very very small check like okay just you know take a couple bucks out of that give me my youtube premium that would be great uh i love it fred you know i need you on this you go right to your local congressman youtube representative and let's make this happen um oh what is the difference between an anthology and a series um the difference is that one of them made stranger things bad and not bad but worse than it could have been and one of them would have been awesome okay so an anthology there are two ways to think about it uh anthology shows uh would be something like um uh like tales from the crypt or the twilight zone uh what's the one i was just watching recently uh whatever anyway the idea is it's a series with a unifying concept but every episode is different it has different characters it's different stories it follows different things um so that that's your traditional anthology series then there's the newfangled kind and the best example of this is american horror story where every season is a new story with new characters you know sometimes they'll get the same actors but they're playing different parts and it's you know it's not connected other than that unifying core theory um and when they finished oh okay oh sorry and then a series is what we're used to right so you know you got five seasons of this thing and it's it's a continuous story with the same characters right so when they finished season one of stranger things my first thought was please make it an anthology this would be so cool especially with a name like stranger things you could do so many interesting things um uh you know they did a great job of making it you know bringing in the 80s stuff uh you know back in that first season and you know you had the kids who were you know adorable and fun and all that stuff and and they decided to continue with it as a traditional series and i just think and it's been it's been fun don't get me wrong i like stranger things i've liked all four seasons of stranger things to you know to varying degrees but i've liked them um but i i do think you could even keep a lot of the same actors um but just make it a different story put it somewhere else do something else with it that would have been really cool um anyway so there you go labor did i say laborious i don't even remember that i blacked out there for a minute and i got really smart when i blacked out uh look at the big brain on bread all right guys uh let's call it there um so today yeah we had some fun going through the amazon prime interface my verdict is basically uh yeah it's an improvement um over what it was before it's an improvement it's it's a it is a lot more like netflix like you guys have been saying and that is no such bad thing right makes it a little easier to get through so uh so yeah it was fun to do this uh tell you what was not fun was trying to like finishing superior that got weird
