now should us not have any power against me unless it were given thee from above in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Ghost amen st. Vincent Ferrer says that because the Alpha and the Omega the beginning and the end the first and the last was offered up and killed by men on this day the church omits the beginning and the end of her liturgy in the breviary in this mass of the presanctified on Good Friday we do not start with the sign of the Cross and we do not end with a blessing Christ is the Alpha he is the Omega he's the first in the last the beginning and the end and that means Christ has the primacy in all things even death he must first lay down his own life before others can kill him our Lord said the Father loves me because I lay down my life that I may take it up again no one takes it from me but I lay it down of my own accord I lay it down of my own accord I have the power to lay it down and I have the power to take it up again this charge I have received from My Father what is he speaking of we learned last evening that our Lord fulfilled this passage first and foremost in the mass gets the power to lay down his life yes the power to take it up again in every Mass this is done he laid down his life and he died in the double consecration the separation of the body and the blood the host the bread becomes the body the chalice of wine becomes the blood and they're consecrated separately to show a sacrifice a death he rises again at the frock CEO the priest breaks a piece of the particle off and he puts it in the chalice the body in the blood or back together again every mass he dies he rises having accomplished this he could then endure the terrible passion he did not turn aside from the suffering and death that was meted out to him by the Jews and the Romans no he set his face like flint to endure it It was as if he were saying you can't do anything to me that I haven't already done to myself I've already died would that we would truly die with him at the mass then we could make those words our own you cannot do anything to me that I have not done to myself imagine yourself being martyred like st. Lawrence you can't do anything to me that had already done to myself go ahead turn me over undone on this side you could handle anything nothing would bother you when we're ready to die we're ready to live when you're ready to die that's when you're really ready to live if we do this die at the consecration with Christ at the mass we can endure any and all crosses in this life and we would also take heart because just as the father loved our Lord for laying down his life so too would he love us if he did it we do it he was loved by the father so will we be loved this is why Peter and the other apostles fell away they did not die with Christ when they had the chance they thought it was just about them know that the mass was about them what were they discussing at the first mass he remember who was greatest among them no is that for our Blessed Lord it was not about him it was about the father when he was going out to the agony he said to his disciples the ruler of this world is coming he has no power over me but I do as the father has commanded me so that the world may know that I love the father rise let us go where is he going Calvary GOG at that with our Lord everything is done for someone else starting with the father he shows what it means to die to self at the mass now consider a moment little 20th century mystic blessed alexandrina she was able to mystically reenact the passion even though she was paralyzed and stuck in bed she'd come alive in an ecstasy and was able to move about in the witness of all kinds of atheist doctors and she would reenact the passion and during this reenactment she would often cry out with the words of Jesus here are some of them my father sacrificed me to save the world the world which is yours my father I want to save the world sacrifice me now I want to give my life for men do not spare me from the sacrifice for love of you O Father I want and embrace your cross father this is for you and to give you souls for you O Father it is for your love those who watched her wept our Lord is Jonah saying throw me into the ocean throw me into the sea the troubled waters and I will calm them before the Last Supper no one could touch our Lord he repeatedly walked through the midst of the crowds and soldiers unscathed just when they thought they to have him he just he was gone but out he voluntarily laid down his life in the first mass out of love by his own hands he then was open for betrayal by one of his own for a terrible trial and all the bloody passion that followed in the upper room the offering was what it was primarily rational wasn't it signs symbols heavy thoughts it was rational it was of the intellect in the will as mass should be primarily but then in the agony he led his body in on it his lower soul that came to share in the sacrifice and they shrank from the pain at the thought of this suffering in such a perfect and sensitive human nature's our Lord's his very veins compressed and the blood burst forth in the sweat in this way he showed us that he was truly man this teaches us that although we can agree to drink the chalice saying with Saint John and Saint James we can we can drink the chalice we can say that with our lips nevertheless when we get the body involved and we let it in on the sacrifice that we made intellectually at Mass here a balance he says I can't do it no wonder why then we need daily exposure to the mass to keep our commitments and to fight ourselves and for becoming selfish and self-centred but think about it this is frightening what happens when the mass itself becomes self-centered what happens when the mass becomes it's for me what happens when it's used for my selfish ends what recourse will such men have to overcome themselves let us value the Holy Mass and use it as Christ intended to die to self enterprise with Christ we have that opportunity at every single Mass now let's spend the rest of our time seeking to deepen our understanding as to why this Friday is called good at the first hour of Friday on the 6th day of creation God fashioned to Adam from the dust even from the slime of the earth from the first hour of Friday Christ received spittle from the sons of Adam at the second hour Friday the various wild beasts and birds gathered themselves around Adam and he gave them names as they bowed their heads before him at the second hour of Friday called good the Jews gathered themselves together against the Christ and they gnashed their teeth at him even as the Blessed David wrote in his Psalms many Bulls had gathered around me Bulls of Bashan have beset me round the third hour of Friday a crown of glory was placed on a head of Adam and at the third hour of Friday the crown of thorns was placed on the head of our Lord three hours was adamant Paradise shining with splendor and three hours was Christ in the judgment hall being beaten by creatures that he had fashioned out of slime at the sixth hour Eve went up to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and disobeying ADIS forbidden fruit and at the sixth hour Christ obeying ascendeth across the Tree of Life and produced the fruit of eternal life for the new Eve to give to us at the sixth hour Eve gave unto Adam the fruit of the gall of death and at the sixth hour the crowd of iniquity gave Christ vinegar and gall to drink for three hours Adam remained under the tree naked for three hours was Christ naked on the wood of the Cross and from the right side of Adam went forth Eve the mother of mortal offspring and from the right side of Christ went forth the church the new Eve the mother of a Mortal offspring through the waters of baptism on Friday Adam and Eve sinned on Friday their sin was remitted on Friday Adam and Eve became naked and on Friday Christ stripped himself naked and clothed them on Friday Satan stripped Adam and Eve naked and threw them into the ditch as the parable of the Good Samaritan says and on Friday Christ stripped naked Satan and all his hosts and openly put them to shame on Friday Adam and Eve died and on Friday they came alive on Friday death reigned over them and on Friday they were freed from his dominion on Friday Adam and Eve went forth from paradise and on Friday our Lord went into the grave on Friday the door of paradise was shut and Adam went forth and on Friday it was opened and a robber went in on Friday the two edged sword was given to the cherub and on Friday Christ was smote with the spear and broke the two-edged sword at the ninth hour Adam went down into the lowest depths of the earth from the height of paradise and at the ninth hour Christ went down to the lowest depths of the earth to those who lay in the dust from the height of the cross when Christ was smitten with a spear and blood and water flowed down from his side they ran down into the mouth of Adam and they became a baptism to him and all his children who were willing to receive it here is the saving scarlet cord flowing down from the window of Rahab at Jericho I hope you see the significance as to why this Friday is so good our Lord and out Adam with an abundance of Graces in life itself on this day and Adam lost it on the very same day the new Adam restored it on this day in a most wonderful way that is truly cosmic and he makes this mystery this one present again and again at each and every mass after the consecration and yet how much like the old atom we really are so ready to neglect the new atoms restoration oh how easily we let the flesh be our guide we love our bodies more than our souls on Friday priesthood prophecy in kingship were given unto Adam and on Friday these three valuable gifts passed from the Jews to the Church of the Gentiles born from the side of Christ they didn't not give him a cup to drink but they gave him a sponge so that they might show that the blessing of their fathers had been swept away from them expunged alas the more we live in the flesh the more we live according to the world the more secular we become the more these irreplaceable precious gifts from our Lord will pass from us to what has happened to the mass has become entertainment what has become of our priests they become secular they become fleshly lovers of the world what has happened to our ability to address air we become politically correct we're afraid what has happened to the kingship of Christ we let souls go astray acting like salvation as possible in other religions will the veil rent from top to bottom in our Holy of Holies will our Lord leave us to to prevent this from happening let us show the world how much we love the father by rising and going hence to join him on Calvary at every mass the Spirit is willing the flesh is weak pray and keep vigil and do penance so as not to enter into temptation and lose what our Savior so wonderfully restored on this Good Friday grant us oh dear Lord that through the sorrows of thy passion and those of the eye dear mother we may come to the glory and the joy of that resurrection amen in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost
