I was involved in making this video essay. It's a recorded conversation between Steve Hullfish (author of Art of the Cut - Conversations of Film & TV Editors) & Sven Pape aka This Guy Edits. The idea was to visualize some common advice from over 40 top-level editors with a dozen Oscar wins, many more nominations & Emmy wins and boil it down into 10 core lessons.
Editing its a lot more important than people think. You can have mediocre actors and shitty direction but if thereβs a lot of takes and extra footage, you can find a way to make something decent and save the day.
"You gotta keep your ego in check." "Houston, we got a problem." hilarious edit.

Thanks for this. I've only been editing professionally for a couple of years, so I found a lot of this advice to be useful. Some of it was pointing out things I kind of already knew but never really thought about, like the impact (or lack thereof) of a spoken word based on whether we see the speaker or the listener.
Now if only I could break out of advertising and work that narrative muscle more. :)
Now, that is a skill that could be useful to a lot of ordinary folks.
Never thought about editing before, but this really planted a seed within as I'm falling more and more in love with the craft.ο»Ώ
Thanks for this.
