DiCaprio's career the movie that opened New Horizons for the 19 year old DiCaprio was What's Eating Gilbert Grape which was the turning point in Leo's career that earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor happily DiCaprio the seventh youngest Academy Award nominee of all time and uh pay attention to that word nominee that's a phrase that would come back to haunt Leo's career and his lack of Academy Award recognition laid him in the form of memes and jokes until 2016's the revenant but back to that first nomination when Leo was still a teenager in What's Eating Gilbert Grape dicaprio played a cognitively disabled young boy the brother of the main character Gilbert Grape who is portrayed by none other than Johnny Depp and it must be said that Leo turns in April great performance what's most impressive is the dedication of Leo's approach to his character as a true professional Leo got some deep research into the topic by spending many days at a home for similarly developmentally delayed teens we talked and I watched their mannerisms people have these expectations that these children are really crazy but it's not so it's refreshing to see them because everything's so new to them Leo explained it seems like spending time researching the role and learning about the real world of intellectually disabled young people really helped Leo to accurately inform his portrayal of the character when he showed up to the movie's premiere many viewers were deeply surprised to find out the actor didn't have autism as you can see even as a kid DiCaprio gave his all to try and turn in as convincing a performance as possible and if any of you haven't watched the movie yet but give it a go I guarantee that it's worth it after his breakthrough with What's Eating Gilbert Grape Leo started to appear in other movies as a leading actor including The Basketball Diaries Romeo and Juliet and of course Titanic which brought into international acclaim but strangely enough that might never have happened nowadays it's almost impossible to imagine the character of Jack from Titanic without picturing DiCaprio but it could almost have happened differently because of studio interference apparently the suits at 20th Century Fox really badly wanted Matthew McConaughey to star in the role alongside Kate Winslet in that case it'll be McConaughey who became king of the world right well maybe it's easier to imagine another McConaughey classic I say alright alright alright anyway for some reason movie director James Cameron insisted on the need for Leonardo DiCaprio to be on board for the film to set sail and that was the starting point for Leo to become one of the world's most famous actors and a firm favorite of fans who got the chance to work with some of the best movie directors of our time has hardly any actors in the world who can reel off the same roster of directorial partners as DiCaprio can having worked with such icons as Alejandro Ian Ito James Cameron Christopher Nolan Steven Spielberg Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese and talking about Leo Scorsese collaboration let's not forget they made five feature films together from Gangs of New York to the Aviator the departed to shutter island' and most recently the wolf of Wall Street these are some of the world's biggest movie hits that will undoubtedly go down in the history of cinema for their cultural acclaim and wild success but try this thought experiment on for size how many times could things have gone completely differently there were plenty of quick look at all of Leo's death-defying disasters dangerous experience number one I jumped out of an airplane and then my chute didn't open Leonardo once decided to go for a freefall with his friends and it almost turned out in to be a real tragedy one by one DiCaprio discovered both his shoots refused to open Leo shared this bone-chilling experience with Ellen DeGeneres describing how his entire life was flashing before his eyes as he realized all of his friends had just sort of popped off with their shoots and he was still plummeting towards the ground nobody should have to know that feeling luckily Leo has jumped in tandem with a more experienced jumper on his back who helped him to untangle the second chute after half a minute of freefall having spent so long at terminal velocity that close to the ground it's no wonder then that even with the emergency parachute the force the impact with the ground was enough to break both of Leo's legs at landing but luckily enough the lad escaped with his life after that Leo swore he would never ever jump from a plane again egg sad dangerous experience number two I was on a plane to Russia and the engine exploded so Leo was on his way to st. Petersburg for the tiger summit to protect the endangered animals but it turned out DiCaprio was the one in danger while looking out the window of the Boeing 767 this is what he claims he saw the entire engine engulfed in a fireball it was all Russian passengers and I kind of felt like I had already died and gone to heaven because no one said anything and I was screaming at the top of my lungs saying what the hell is going on here a stewardess on the Delta flight tried to explain to Leo that there had been a slight problem one engine had failed but not to worry as there was still one left one engine happened to be just enough for the plane to return to the New York runway for a rather less eventful landing dangerous experienced number three and if you still don't believe that the Caprio is suffering under some kind of curse then just listen to how edward norton once had to save his life Norton is an old friend of Leo and he even jokingly refers to the movie star as unlucky Leo and with damn good reason one time the two of them decided to go diving together and Leo went way off track following various Deep Sea underwater wildlife as the diving session was coming to a close Norton began to worry about his friend where could Leo possibly have gone they decided to set out to find his pal and it turns out that was a good idea his DiCaprio scuba tank was completely out of oxygen Norton found him deep beneath the sea and DiCaprio came barreling towards his friend with a wild-eyed look on his face I can see from like 50 yards away his eyes are like like this big and he's going like this if Norton hadn't shared his oxygen with Leo things may well have turned tragic so I guess we can all breathe a sigh of relief along with Leo and just be grateful to Edward Norton for saving DiCaprio's life look I like I said I'm understand incredibly grateful dangerous experience number four well that's the wildest one of all Leo told all in an interview with Ellen describing how he was once accidentally trapped in a cage with a great white shark they actually said in 30 years this has never happened but the tuna kind of got stuck on the top of the cage and the great white left out and tried to bite it and went into the cage with me he said so half of this dangerous creatures body was in the with DiCaprio the half with the teeth that is Leo had nothing else to do but to flatten down at the bottom of the cage and stay as far as possible away from those ferocious jaws Leo even explained that even though the shark managed to jump down a few times while in the cage the actors still managed to survive unscathed somehow I'm guessing you've probably got loads of questions about how such a disastrous situation could even have occurred right how Lia was doing in a cage in the middle of a shark-infested ocean in the first place well it was all part of his expedition program to Capetown in 2006 while he was on a break from filming Blood Diamond and here's where we can
