if you enjoy this video please consider subscribing to the channel in this video we'll be looking at how the appearances of the left 4 dead survivors changed throughout the game's development there are three points we'll be talking about the original concept art the e3 2008 redesign and the final design so welcome to left 4 dead beta the original survivors [Music] left for death started its development around mid-2005 in the christmas 2006 publication of pc gamer uk it was unveiled publicly to the world in that six page article readers could learn more about what the game was and how its development started and what will be the end result in the article we can see early versions of the survivors i think bill was the only survivor who didn't receive a whole lot of changes even till the release of the game but one thing was certain the survivors were rugged rough looking compared to the more simplistic designs of the retail game these people looked like they saw countless horrors i personally feel that the retail version's tone was shifted a little towards the more uplifting side compared to the dark and gritty one shown in these screenshots [Music] like i stated earlier bill had the least amount of changes done to him if compared to the retail version the only thing i can notice is the lack of details in a way his concept art design had him wearing a military combat jacket a dog tag and a pair of gloves all of that was changed and simplified for francis his facial features got a full revamp between the early concept and the final game at first he had a full beard long hair and a scar on his right eye along with that his vest seemed to have more detail such as pockets and tags but that was removed and he was given a simple leather vest lewis got a whole lot of changes done on his design starting from his facial features he had a thin beard and short curly hair that was replaced and louis became bald and clean-shaven for his clothing he had a yellow shirt a brown jacket and in some cases a pair of gloves again like the previous two his design was simplified for some reason i think of left 4 deads designed somewhere in between team fortress 2s and half-life 2's design the perfect middle where it doesn't look too cartoony or too realistic zoe also went under many changes some were subtle some were drastic in the concept art she does not look caucasian-american-like in the retail game but rather latino or african-american her hairstyle was almost kept the same apart from the minor changes on the front however the design after the concept art had the same clothing as the concept version but a different face that made her look older from here we can see how they changed her into the character we know today her concept version had a pink hoodie and cargo pants with knee pads but later on she would wear a pink hoodie with a zipper on top of a white shirt and denim pants when e3 2008 rolled around valve had acquired turtle rock studios and showcased the game at that year's event in the showcase gabe newell showed how they were redesigning the characters to make them more suitable for better facial animations from the art we can see bill became more closely resembling to the final version as did francis lewis was basically the same as he is in retail but zoe was a little different in the art that gabe showed she had a red bandana and a different hairstyle for me left4dead's character design is unique like i stated earlier the design in that game for the character is somewhere between tf2s and hl2s not realistic but not cartoonish either the textures for the original survivors were more detailed i think they simplified them as part of a revamp l4d and l4d2 are both classic and iconic games we can only hope that back for blood can satisfy our needs of having a third left for dead game because valve ain't making any third game anytime soon thank you for watching [Music] you
