[Music] I've always kind of had this perception about drifting and that is it's a little bit of a black arm not everybody goes to drifting school they learn drifting in snowy parking lots they learn it from a friend they learn it on their own time I think it's also one of those things all into just go I can drift I'll just go out Roger that I'll be fine right figure it out I can figure we're adrift 101 today we're going to be taught how to drift I mean I know we've taken the FRS we put that on your hammer shown you're drifting with that that's child's play today is here's how you actually drift that's why we're here 240 240 exactly and fresh cheap tires there's this I feel like almost misconception that every Auto journalist is dressed but it's something I'd like to have in my bag of tricks I want to understand how to get the car out and leave it because what's happened with me with the time of doing the show is I always fight it the initial sort of feeling that we're going to sort embed in and you're going to head at the moment the car starts a very blue it's the moment in how you react to it as well we're going to start working on that's what that little half a second is as a cars rotating what are you going to do are you going to respond to it or you're going to allow the car to do sure you're gonna focus on the cool so all I've been asked to do is donut now honestly because I pay for my own tires I never do donuts I take the FRS out I'll leave a parking lot sideways that's kind of fun the entire thing Naoki wants me to do here to start this is is literally come to a stop crank the wheel and just go left [Music] you know so we're hard left why am i adjusting the rearview mirror [Music] [Music] shall we give auditorium let's put hot in herre don't good this is all for the exercises that help speed into other ways of drifting whether you brake or clutch kick so the more accurate you are with underpinning the moment desire for extraction the either Peaks we're going to be really start drifting from here on so let's try it counters Jim we're still doing left hand donuts but now we want the back to come around enough the full opposite steering lock [Music] I know what you're thinking it's donut how hard can this be [Music] I really really want to fix it you managed to drop that on the idol yes upon initiation or squeezes jingle I'm a little curious while you're sort of cooking on this one it was I should be your right eye but my instinct is the suit starts going this way I should be correcting to go out through it we can fix it with with a comb I realized how instinctual driving is we talked about it all the time but I realized how instinctual it is to want to do a certain thing even if it's wrong dammit dammit dammit dammit come on Todd [Music] oh my god not good actually to be honest okay a couple things I noticed your posture sort of started shifting and started looking a little different than yeah you're forcing the control doughnut yeah that's Errol but if we can find that not me sort of medium we're still relaxed so that was what's the best word humbling let's start with that one I want to correct it I want to find myself a way out so that's part of what's going on and then as a result of that I'm looking out of the doughnut in the middle I look out of the donut I automatically end up countering my way right out of it so here we are we started we'll see it can only get better from here [Music] alright so now I need to start with the cone give it the the clutch drop and then drop down into the modulation range to start bringing the back end around and counter-steer the other way but I'm still going left how much gas you fly in lift it's going to affect how the car charts the screen out or oversteer I'm very self analytical right now all right here we go [Music] that was interesting I'm correcting the slide I'm constantly wanting to get out of the slide hard left rough the motor dumping [Music] that's all pretty good starting click right-click a little bit that salt once you get it into the groove and over the moment yeah good here and explain to all goodies yeah it literally means the end we all get some practice in and we've been a moment dude for the quake that we've been great describing what we're supposed to be doing there's some technique to start but then past that you've got to understand where the feeling comes in so I'm just sort of reflective right now and and trying to be very analytical about what the car is doing even though that's someone you have to throw that out and just feel it meanwhile naoki had me back in the car to try again very much fear exactly won't fall then okay no pressure [Music] [Music] [Music] kind of like right now even on your last one I think your hands are just pretty much dead you didn't actually turn in ended up letting the car drive away sure so don't hesitate to turn in you guys focus on your target and just do your own good good thanks sir what's crazy is how it's this way with lots of things a drug but it's crazy how as it starts to click you now it now becomes a field thing and then it began to go graceful I get really quick one Oh are you holding back on me no okay I've been my brain is now putting all of the pieces together at once yes yes because as I was as I was focusing what you said the last time was was excellent for me because as I realized as I was focusing more on eyes and throttle I wasn't thinking about this as much okay so now that I was getting throttled I'm baffled you now that I'm getting never I've gotten to a place where throttle was making sense for me then I became okay that now knows what it needs to do then what do I need to do here okay you're right I've gone dead I'd gone I'd gone dead here I just wasn't thinking about that rain just jump inland I think I've seen elite this year all right a strange one okay that doesn't mean hey that may be a fluke but but what you just said about I mean I'd forgotten about steering I'd forgotten about hearing at all I was I was trying to do all thought I was trying to get it countered and leave it there but once I started playing with it that was the piece I wasn't adding okay no okay yeah all right now we always need to laid out so here's a good test check if everything is sound meaning that you telling me that your technique is good you're staring at fine your throttle is fine show me right hand right now go right hand yeah we'll see [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh I got it and it is that crazy car thing or dancing or skiing or pick your sport when you start to do it well and your body gets balanced you feel that you're in the right place and now you have a comfort level you didn't have before that happened in the middle of that it is one of the strangest experiences but I'm thrilled since Todd had finally cracked it it was time for me to do right handers steering will fully crank to the right give it full power drop the clutch Oh [Music] all right for a first try getting there getting there alright a little bit cleaner this time a little bit more thoughtfulness [Music] that was actually really fun I'm wondering if because our natural inclination was to ride out a flight even if we do a 180 but we're straightening things out I'm wondering if figga rates are going to be easier now because that's the next step is figure Eight's and a slow progression but now I feel like both Todd and I things are clicking [Music] come on come on do it good floppy standardly bottom I throttle inputs are not enough yeah yeah actually lift it off again please trenches I'll get employers were written out before exactly remember captain both the card fill that motor further didn't happen all right okay more throttle to see more throttle with speed here we go try to put it all together [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] yeah I did the thing I keep being surprised by is that I'm actually not applying enough problem there's so much throttle modulation but it's so much higher in the pedal travel that I expected and I was surprised at how close these tones are I expected this to be a much larger exercise but something about it being fall here is all first-year so many things are happening at once but it is the exact building block of where we were earlier I'm kind of shocked up a little I'm a little jittery right now I'm not there's a lot of adrenaline pumpin at the moment this is awesome I had the benefit of all the analytical knowledge at this point and no experience [Music] okay do I have a cone in my teeth [Music] Oh [Music] so bring a turn light on throttle exiting a turn heavy on throttle okay [Music] we'll try one more [Music] [Music] alright so we're putting it together and I've had some good transitions there some really good ones but then when I give it too much throttle coming snapping that pendulum round I'm overcompensating at this point someone hand and I put one of the things I learned I do that really well and then I forget about the other thing so when I when I start putting it all together is when I had some good runs now that we had the feel of it naoki had less to teach and more ways to challenge us first the drifting we all expect a handbrake induced 180 [Music] now keep in mind that if you're coming in at a certain radius forced to turn I want you to exit out named radius okay all right trying this again [Music] that was it [Music] once you initiate or get the car to pit sideways sorta modulate that a nurse let any flight outs where you want to go [Music] this is no fun at all no fun at all why are we here why are we doing this [Music] but then came the ultimate challenge combining every exercise we learned during the day a 180 tightening down to a figure eight and out and on his first attempt Paul demonstrated his impressive cone delivery procedures oh my god okay different version of a doughnut opponent okay bear claw I overthought it a lot I tell my students this all the time don't let the brain get in the way of you having fun and I keep forgetting that because I want to get the technique down so much kind of changed out drifting we're trying it's really strange first of all it's not drifting and it's not about cars it's about a sociological experiment it's all psychology psychology really it doesn't help that I keep throwing these new twists yeah so welcome [Music] you're right it's trying to get the exercise right yeah along with doing it you know then then feeling it is I think the biggest hurdle for well now I find it it's very information heavy but it's information heavy that gets you to a point where you feel it once you feel it you can almost drop the information the intra VAT is a good way of looking at you to what you need to feel and then you feel it you go oh that's what we're done [Music] Oh [Music] this Accord not very cleanly yeah yeah it's pretty ugly pretty bit more gas they finally because all handsome understeer yeah I agree with it yes absolutely absolutely [Music] [Applause] since you make a beautiful cone today was a sociological psychological have deep into the human psyche what you're saying spearmint completely ridiculous it does it does but here's the thing naoki that runs it is like a Yoda of drifting I'm not kidding but he changes his information actually I found a lot because I'm listening to what he's telling you and I think okay that's sound good but that doesn't apply to my driving style the stuff he says is for you and you alone yeah and he said he's figuring out from your driver strength and what he's seeing you do wrong and there see how much about throttle going on here that it's insane and of course you and I are now put next experts no no no no order we're not there we're barely starting a one and let's come back but here's this bigger thing is that if you really want to learn how to drift you won't believe how inform it is this is the information is shocking the cars are here the tires are here come

I wonder how modified that car is? Like, I imagine it's set up specifically for breaking loose, but I wonder how much harder it would be in a stock car.

If anyone is curious, this school is awesome. If you're in the area, find the cash, and go attend.
