hi there today we will learn spanish with a scene from the show friends in this scene ross and rachel are interviewing nannies and they are finding out that it's not the easiest step to start you'll watch the full clip with subtitles then we'll break down each section to learn key vocabulary and expressions and finally you will watch the clip again without any subtitles by the end you will test yourself and see just how much you've learned with this video are you ready let's start foreign [Laughter] yes means to start or begin normally you would say but here the verb is conjugated as komensei why is it different because this sentence requires the subjunctive which is a special mood that implies uncertainty certain phrases trigger the subjunctive for example here queremos que requires this objective another example of this form is quiero queija comiense a trabajar mas i want her to start working more here rachel is explaining that she will go back to work in four weeks but basically she wants the nanny to start working right away to make sure the baby gets comfortable with the nanny transition in this context she is saying that having the nanny meet the baby before the parents need to go back to work will really soften the transition for the child you could also say esta crema de verdad suavis this cream really softens the skin you might recognize the word suaree meaning soft estate this fabric is very soft means ask us or ask ourselves it comes from the regular verb which simply means to ask so here she is asking the nanny if she has anything to ask them ross and rachel another example is de vemos preguntarnos estamos haciendo we must ask ourselves if we are doing this right if we go to the floyd new platform we can see how this word is used in other videos and many different examples of how this word can be used depending on the context of the conversation [Music] means to get to know her it comes from the verb conocer which comes from the same root as the english words cognition and recognize we use the termination la to say meet her or know her as la is a feminine termination if we use the masculine form we would say conocerlo and that would mean get to know him altogether means pleased to meet you since ross and rachel are telling the nanny that it was a pleasure to meet her and that they'll call her other examples of this complementary pronoun are quiero abrasarla i want to hug her ass [Music] here the nanny asks ross and rachel if they regularly perform anti-doping or drug tests on the nannies not something you might want to ask during a work interview anti-doping means the same thing in english and spanish a test often applied to athletes to prevent the use of steroids but in this case it could also have been translated as drug test or examined another appropriate expression would be preva de toxicologia or toxicology test the reason why is because the nanny was only referring to doping but possibly other kinds of drugs as well it often happens that spanish phrases are not translated literally or are translated incorrectly and unfortunately a lot of the real meaning gets lost in translation like with anti-doping watching videos like this one where spanish vocabulary words are used in a day-to-day conversation is definitely a great start to your journey of learning a new language however with that means we haven't thought about it what ross is saying is basically that the thought hadn't even occurred to them this is the past perfect tense and if you break it down it's actually really similar to english we had thought becomes aviyamos pensa in this case the word lo is a masculine direct object that can be translated as either him or it for example i don't think you've met him arisen means let me know in this case the nanny is basically saying that if ross and rachel plan to do a drug test they need to let her know abisenmen is a conjugated form of the verb avisar it can also mean alert me avisenme is the compound of the second person plural ustedes imperative form of abisar abisen and the pronoun me this means you in plural will let me know for example mi pero esta perdido siloven abisendi my dog is lost if you see him let me know means see you never and it implies i hope i never see you again since rachel hopes to never come face to face with that woman again it is commonly used when you are upset with someone and want to make a dramatic exit during an argument it is very effective as a closing line entrepreneurs means interviews as in english this work can refer to work interviews press interviews video or periodistic in spanish a work interview is called entre vista laura so basically in this context rachel is worried that they are never going to find a nanny but ross tries to reassure her by mentioning that they still have a few more interviews is a very common expression meaning we are going from bad to worse for example [Music] we got lost and now it's raining we are going from bad to worse in this case ross is saying that they are not going from bad to worse to give rachel some optimism and uplift her what he is trying to say is basically that things are looking up in this case grado means certification or degree in this scene this means that the nanny they are referring to has had some sort of education that enables her to work with children but be careful in spanish the word gradle also means great and is used to refer to scholar years cursa primer gradu he is in first grade here ross is explaining that this nanny works for a family for three years spanish has two words meaning four and you have to be very careful because they are used in very different ways para is used as a function word to indicate purpose an intended goal or the object recipient of a perception desire or activity for example estudiare mucho para el examine i will study a lot for the exam or este regalo es para jose this gift is for jose on the other hand bor is a complex spanish word that translates to four but only in specific instances so be careful like in the friends clip board can be used to describe a length of time for example evideo in colombia cinco anos i've lived in colombia for five years so what ross is saying is that this danny worked for a previous family for three years means manly it is a word used to refer to something or someone that has qualities often associated with men it is not a very common word and depending on the context it can be quite offensive so keep it in mind if you plan to use it in this case ross is using it sarcastically to express a surprise at meeting a male nanny okay now let's re-watch the clip and see how much you've learned um is hola [Laughter] enjoying this way of learning spanish
