so hi this is gary with macmost.com and today in a special live episode i'm going to build a project in imovie while you watch so i want to start off by thanking my patreon supporters macmost is supported by more than 750 great supporters you can find out more by going to macmost.com patreon and there you can read all about it join us and get exclusive content and course discounts so what i want to do here today is i want to build a project in imovie and show you how it goes now unlike a regular video this is going to be live so you're going to see all the little mistakes and experimentations and things that i do which is how you normally create things when you're working with a creative tool like imovie so you're going to see me try things and then undo and then go back and all of that it's not always just step one step two step three and you're done like in a normal tutorial but hopefully you'll learn a lot along the way of how the creative process works and also maybe get some tips and things like that about using imovie through all the different things that i'm trying so let's get going so here i am in imovie and i've created a new project so first thing i want to do after creating a new project is i want to bring in my media now i could go in and import from various places like i can grab stuff from my albums now all of that or i could bring stuff in using files which is what i'm going to do let's go over to projects here and i'm going to create a new project and then go to movie and then i've created this blank movie here now i recorded basically a whole ton of clips the other day that i want to use for this and um you know you see those videos are like montage videos you see them on like tik tok and snapchat and instagram and everything facebook uh where it's like some like sports person like maybe a skateboarder will like you know get up in the morning have breakfast grab their skateboard go to the skate park do a bunch of cool tricks you know and it's all like in a montage so i thought i'd do that so here's me grabbing my skateboard and doing all that uh no of course just kidding uh i don't skateboard but i um really don't do anything very exciting so instead of me being the subject here i decided it would be my dog instead and my dog going for a walk in the park so i brought a whole ton of video and this is all shot like within one hour i'm just going to drag and drop it in here and you can see so i just dragging from the finder from off screen i'm going to drop it into my movie project media and it's going to import all these clips and i took all these clips using my iphone so nothing special here just a bunch of iphone clips so let's get going and look at the first one and these are all of course in chronological order so it shows you know there's me getting the dog up feeding the dog taking him out his name's jack by the way and then going for a walk and ending up at the park and i took some b-roll some interesting things we saw along the way and all that so let's get going by grabbing this first clip here where i told him we're gonna go for a walk and he wasn't having any of it it was too early for him so he wasn't interested so in a montage of course want things to be pretty quick so let's go and make this a short clip here it's like 13 seconds long of course we want to be really short like one second now you can see my dog let's see there's a cute little wink right there blink my dog only has one eye so it was really easy to teach him how to wink um and uh let's just grab the left side of this here that i've got i got it in the timeline and just drag it over and there's a little there's a blinker wink there and i can shorten this to about one second and you can see i've got one second there of him just sitting there and then i got him up by promising him food so the next clip is 34 seconds long which we're only going to use a bit of but i'm going to take two different sections of it so i'm going to drag that 34 second long clip in here and i've got a shot of me filling up the food ball so i want to make this really tight it's important to make things really tight in a quick quick montage like one or two seconds is all you really need and by the way i am watching the comments here um so if you have a question about exactly what i'm doing i'll try to like look over here to see in the live chat um what comments uh questions people have and maybe clarify something or if you notice something you want me to try out i can do that and but of course if you're watching this later just ask in the comments and i'll get to you so i'm going to drag the beginning here and i want it to be just as i'm dumping the food in there you know you want to keep shots that are like action so here's like action not exciting action but it's action so i'll start there and then there's the food in there now what i'd like to do is stop it right there so i'm going to click you've got this line you actually have two lines down here and the one the darker gray one that's kind of like where you click and you place like a marker there temporary marker and then the other white line is where your cursor is and it's what you see in this preview area here so i click there so now i can see where that is but also i'm going to use that i'm going to do command b which is split believe it c that would be under modify there we go split clip so command b will split where the white line is let me undo that i want to go right here and let's do command b right there so quick food dumped in the bowl nothing happens for a while the dog gets up oh jack get over there i'm going to adjust the scale there make it a little easier and there is jack coming over to eat so we want to like be really quick in the action there so like there to maybe here and do command b again and then i can delete this extra part here so you can see what we've got building here okay now let's go and continue with this and the next segment here is you know i've got one got back up on the sofas i got them walking through i don't need to use all these clips so here's one where i you know it's getting ready for me to uh give him the put the leash on him it's actually a little harness thing so it doesn't pull on his neck let's put that in here and he gets excited dances around he does one of these things where he goes up to the camera like that i like that it does like two of them the first one's probably the best so let's go and right there command b i'll get rid of everything before it and then i can see a little bit of his excitement actually i want to expand that i'm going to go and pull that yellow line there a little bit more so you can see them get excited and then i can do so you can do command b or you can drag the yellow side on the right side it's just so easy to do command b when you have it perfectly positioned there all right so now we have that now the next in the sequence is you know you could scrub here while it's still in the media here to see what this is so getting ready to go you know with the leash on so you know you can also grab the yellow lines here and drag and just grab the section you want like that it doesn't always get you the best results so we expand that a bit i like it right there where he's got his head going back and forth and then he looks up and let's uh split that and go right there cool so the next one is actually the door opening now notice because i was holding my phone in a weird way that um you know it caught it as vertical video so fortunately we can fix that i can go here to the cropping tool and there's rotation here so i can rotate this so now we've got it going properly so i open the door and he runs out so let's get a split right there and then runs outside and a split right there good now we've got the first little bit of him walking down forward so i've got a lot of shots like this him just going forward so let's grab this it's only four seconds long we still want to grab a section we adjust the scaling again so a good section here oh he lifts his head up a little bit there so let's start with that and oh maybe i i want to go a little before that there we go and split it there so let's look at what we've got so far so oh the eating the eating sequence is a little long i know if you heard the audio there and make sure it's turned up so i like the eating sequence is definitely way too long right here so let me shorten that maybe there cut this piece out i do like here you can hear me say huh i want to go for a walk um hope that comes through and then let me cut out the huh so [Music] [Music] there i like that you hear me say you want to go for a walk and then wait for the door to open little good boy and he's out now these are called jump cuts see how they just jump jump you know the food sequence is still too long jump jump jump walk jump jump i want to shorten this one too okay i like jump cuts and that's what's popular on youtube now but what i don't like is how abrup completely abrupt they are i think a little dissolve goes a long way so let's go into transitions here and add a transition now i don't want to do any fancy transitions here i think it just distracts my video like this there's always already enough movement things going on you don't need to do fancy wipes and stuff so i'm going to add a cross dissolve here now the problem with cross dissolve is by default it's one second so look at this cross dissolve how long it is so i can double click on it change the duration to 0.2 and you get a much better i mean it's almost like it's a cut but it's not quite as abrupt there's a softness to it so i want to add 0.2 second dissolves everywhere fortunately in imovie i don't need to change the time every time i go to imovie preferences and there is a transition default i'm going to change it from one second to point two so now when i do a cross dissolve here it's automatically point two and i could drag one to every single one here okay so now we go [Music] i like that a lot better i'll adjust the scaling here a bit more so i can pull this out a bit so we can see some of these so this allows me to be a little finer here on this i'm going to pull in that a bit maybe shorten this one up i mean shorter the better here i really don't want these to be more than a second if i can help it all right so let's continue on the walk here i'll go back to my media and now we've got this first sequence here uh let's see where was it where were we we can see the little orange lines here so i'm showing we've used this bit so we know we've last used this bit here here's another sequence i'm not going to be able to include all of these so i'm going to include the best one so this one kind of looks like the others but i don't like that he kind of goes on the grass instead of on the sidewalk this is good because it's showing a transition now he's walking on conch you know there's like a brick path there on this uh sides um let's see let's see uh alfred's got a question here uh oh it's from earlier uh remove the background like in the previous live stream not sure you're talking about like you know there's no background behind me that's just a green screen and i'm using obs studio and they have a chroma key function i mean imovie's got chroma key function screenflow's got a chroma key function so you have to use chroma key with the green screen to do that or blue screen or a white background black background whatever you want uh just it's chroma key that's the key to that so okay so here we want to get another quick one second of jack walking i like here when he's kind of in the middle of the sidewalk there and so we'll do command b we'll cut that out let's go to this next thing here okay so i got pictures of me like hitting the crosswalk thing to show that we are in fact crossing the street so i like that let's get that in here i'll shrink that down to just me hitting the button and i think you can hear it say let's see here yeah you can hear weight which is nice and then we got jack crossing the street i live in the city here so you know we're going to the park see how happy is right there all right let's get that happiness in here it goes across and we'll cut the rest of that out and then we'll go let's see he's walking a little bit more on the sidewalk there um i like this shot because i got him from the side now he's like on the side of me i was trying to do different things with how i did this so let's get a good section here i like this section right here he's a foxhound so being a hound dog he's really in this all for the smells so he's always going to keep his nose down to the ground hey let's see afried i i did just reply to you so hopefully you're seeing that um there we go there's that um then we we do another cross walk here going across but i like that one too i don't hope i'm wondering if this is getting too long let's put that in for now right there boom and there we go now there's a second part of this same clip that i want to use i'm going across let's see where's a good part something like right there and i just select and delete the stuff before it go for about one second select delete stuff after that great now we're finally in the park here so i've got a sequence here where he's entering the park there's obviously a lot of stuff here let's cut there get rid of the stuff before it and keep about a second or so of him there now the next part shows i'm going through grass right which is technically the next thing we're doing so we'll get a good shot of here him in the middle going through some grass and then there we go and now the next part there is the side shot where he's walking and it's half concrete and half grass so i was thinking about this as i shot it i was like even though this is the correct chronological sequence you've got concrete grass half grass half concrete i want to change the order of that a little creative license there so concrete then along the side and then on the grass now we have i haven't been adding the dissolves in here so let's go and do that before we get too far ahead all right now some of these sequences are definitely too long i think this one here is uh i was like two seconds now it's got to be a lot shorter than that this one too so i can take some off from the beginning someone from the end all right so where are we here in the sequence so we got some more actiony shots here um there we go so we're walking along this area here i don't know if we need to include all of this i've got it on the grass walking along this area near the lake let's grab a bit of this this is kind of nice change the scenery here and i like when it gets to this part that's good i call it head is high his tail is up all right he's having a good time more of that here leave that out then a little jump here where he's got to jump over this wall not a hard jump but at least it's something different than just walking i've got other stuff like that i know coming up so i'll skip that now he's walking along this wall here i like that let's grab a little piece here of this it's too big i like maybe starting right there so i'm using iphone imovie on this is on a mac it looks very different on a on an iphone of course and i do want to point out uh that i am using this version 10.1.16 which is available now and i'm using mac os catalina okay so this is a little long let's shorten that now um yeah i like this so he's only got one eye and he likes to smell but he enjoys views which is really weird i take him hiking and they'll be like a beautiful view that'll be like whoa breathtaking the sun setting mountains and all that and i'll look and he is like mesmerized by it i mean i've seen that i've seen him get up early go out of the tent while backpacking and like watch the sunrise so a little weird but i've seen him do it so many times that i truly believe he's actually he actually does enjoy the view with his one eye and the fact that you know he should be more focused on smells so anyway he does do things like this where he likes to look around i like this let's start here maybe he's looking and it almost looks like there's something there like a squirrel or something there wasn't it's just enjoying the view of the lake so there's that then he got up on the wall all right i may have encouraged him to get up on the wall um so we can get him like that actually he did that twice i'm gonna get rid of that because the second time right after that he did it and it was a little further on it's a bit of a better sky view there let's get a good view of him moving his head around oh there we go cut that right there there nice okay uh then there's some b-roll so i took pictures things like this here's a bird i get another bird later on that's much more interesting so maybe i'll skip that for now here's some going down a path and more on a path uh it's nice to show a little movement after standing there so maybe let's do this you know it occurs to me i believe before we go here i think here at some point he got down all right so let's extend this clip out here yeah break that up there i should added a break here to the original piece get that middle part so now we have a sequence like this and then down okay okay good and now more walking let's get a good segment here there we go something like that there we go can i do the jump at slow mo let's let's play around with that because that's a really good idea um and definitely the sort of thing you want to experiment on so experiment with so let's go here and go to the speed control let's do the speed to slow thanks for the question let's go so i like it i don't think it's perfect for this but i think it's it's interesting so maybe in another situation it would have worked so i'm going to undo that here um let's see i have another sequence of him there now i'm kind of got this idea in my head i i call jack the king of city park this is city park we're in and he goes and i think all dogs you know when you walk them in place like that they look at it as like i'm a big bad wolf and this is like my domain right um so in his mind he probably thinks he's king of city park um so yeah it's on all the geese and all the other dogs and the squirrels or his subjects so i wanted to call this video kanga city park and i'm thinking uh you know something like this looks very regal so i can maybe you know make sure i get shots like this in and there's some more of him moving there's some flower shop there's two flower beds that we go through um it's the first one but i was really i liked the second one better so here's him standing and i got some other shots him standing like that uh probably gonna uh right now i'm running i think a bit long time i think we're 30 seconds so let's go right to this shot here this is good he switches from here to going up some stairs so let's get a closer close-up of the stairs here just a segment that's a little bit too much i want him in the middle of the stairs like that something a little different here's him going towards the flowers i like that but i'm going to grab towards the end so he actually does like flowers just like snow when we've gone camping there's you know wildflowers all over you know colorado wherever you go camping and stuff and uh you know when i let them sniff around the campsite he likes to go over to like the wildflowers and and actually i could you know i have pictures of him just like sniffing the wildflowers like he's a person or something but of course he's a hound dog he lives on smells so um that makes sense so grab him going close to that and then i got him in this sequence here so this i started to try to get him like walk through the flowers and he's like nope uh you go first so then i walked backwards so i can get a little thing of him just going through some of these like that okay so then here's my idea as as i was doing this i took a bunch of photos of the flowers close up and um uh oh there's a question here from ross about adding titles i'm going to add titles at the end so and i'm i'm i'm not going to do i'm not going to do color correction well i may i'll experiment with color correction i'm going to experiment with filters at the end here let's see and uh let's so i have these flowers here let's grab these flowers see these pictures and i want to create this idea that he's going up and smelling the flowers so i'm just going to go through these photos and i'm going to drag and drop them in and of course they're all too long so i'm going to shrink them all to you know 30 uh one second like that and they're all set to ken burns notice how you know the defaults ken burns i could have turned that off before i brought them in but we always forget to do that when we're actually working with it so the see let's try it out with ken burns first and see how it works in the sequence okay so we have all these flowers here we don't need to use them all but see how it goes so he goes over to the flowers and then maybe a little longer sequence there in the flowers then he's smelling the flowers yeah ken burns doesn't work so i'm going to select all of these go to crop and change them all to crop to fill hit the plus button there so now they're just like that now let's get let's catch up on our our uh transitions here where do we stop adding those there they are so i wish there was a way maybe there is and i just haven't discovered it i'm just automatically adding transitions i think the themes have automatic transitions but if you're doing no theme then you don't get that so we catch up on these and then we get to the flowers and i'm tempted to not do transitions with the flowers so there there there and then flower flower flower flat you know they're not fast enough like that yeah so two thirds of a second so i like having the hard cuts there um just to make them a little different since these are photos yeah so the ken burns a question i mentioned that ken burns was on by default if i go into imovie and i look at photo placement ken burns i could have set this to crop to fill i should have but i never remember to right i always like throw the photos in and i'm like oh i should have changed that um but yeah certainly do that and you know now i could do it i should have done it right there so you know okay crop to fill now i'm good if i'm going to do more of this so now we continue on our walk there's jack just standing there there's jack kind of walking by some rocks there's jack walking in some different terrain let's add something from the end of that clip here something right here you know i do it the next clip here is this this is the next clip it's autumn and here's a typical like autumn tree and it's beautiful and all that and you can see different colors in the background and i i shot this in the sequence here at this part of it i had to kill the camera really still and it's kind of like b-roll like so here's this area here where it's just like that now i would love to have jack walk through that or something but of course you know i'm keeping him on the leash um but here he looks like he's looking at that he actually kind of is this is actually on my left this is on my right as in this sequence here so let's move this up on top and create a cutaway so i put that on top there let's make them the same length here's a cutaway and actually i want this to be more of just when he's like here and let's make this instead of oh that's that's the end of that clip there so let's make this instead of a regular cutaway i'll change the cutaway type and make it i can do split screen which is kind of interesting so there's dak enjoying the view or i could try picture-in-picture and then maybe put jack down here now he's kind of tiny there so we can go to crop and i can crop to fill and then crop in closer on jack since he is so like steady in that frame and let's crop really close on him like that and check mark and now he's down here and there he is he's looking at the flowers now i have these little dots here these alfred yes this is my dog jack um let's see uh clutting kit clips and shrinking clips uh greg asked what's the difference really it's just you're just working with these clips so you can shrink them to what you want you can cut them and take this part away you get the same result i like doing the command b i can hold the line steady there do command b and make a really good cut whereas if i find a spot i want and i have to go to the end and drag and pull it in then um i may not get the exact spot anyway here is the fade in fade out part there so um i want to you know not have him fade so it goes here and it goes right to here him enjoying the foliage let's go and uh i don't do that i'm going to do this i'm going to move him down even more to the corner there maybe to this corner since he's kind of looking in that direction there we go and it's a nice little sequence there now if i want to add the dissolve i need to move the picture picture away from the edges so let's add the dissolve there and put the dissolve at the end now i can add this back to the edges there so the dissolve is actually going to happen and you'll see it here it dissolves in and the picture picture appears and then it dissolves out so we can add a little bit of a dissolve in the picture and picture so it picture dissolves in and do it more picture dissolves in and then the picture in picture dissolves in and then out and then the whole thing out so we get a different sequence there does it really work i don't know it's not the best here but i like it because i'm demonstrating a little something different then i've got some more stuff there's jack sitting down by the lake some more background stuff but i also have jack with the background i like this let's get that in there and maybe to a point where you know the king is overlooking his kingdom somewhere in there there we go uh i want to get him when he's moving his head surveying his domain so we got that what else we got here we got another sequence him walking this is good we kind of need to pick that back up to you know this is a walk so more action sequences kind of get close to these big rocks here okay here's some another bird i saw hey bonus points if you can name the species of this bird i i don't know corant maybe i don't know somebody uh asked how can you livestream the mac obs studio that's the software that you want and then you have to hook that in with the youtube stream so here is this bird here now here's the thing i haven't mentioned yet i shot this on my iphone in 4k right but i'm making a video really that just needs to be 1080. that's great because i can zoom in and not lose any resolution so here is a good area where this bird is there see how the bird turns its head right there yeah i like that so we get the bird turned its head and turns it yeah just like that this is kind of what jack's seeing as a surveying his domain now the cool thing is i can go to crop here crop to fill and i can crop in close to this bird here to make it look like i was using a telephoto lens actually was using the telephoto lines on my iphone so you know this is extra telephoto so there we go so jack's walking there's that bird let's see more of jack walking yeah that's the last sequence in the park so let's use it something like that there we go now we're leaving the park we're at 43 seconds here so we're doing good we're leaving the park here's me to hit the cross button again now i think i hit it and then i realized oh i didn't get a good shot of that with the camera so i did it again here so i'll press it uh boy that's still a little too much time hit and then i think there's a beep in there yeah you can hear the beep and then um we get jack going across the street see what part of that sequence is the best something like that let me be in there great then jack walking through the neighborhood you don't need to use every shot there's a decent one for some reason i think it's better you know i'm not a cinematographer i didn't go to film score anything like that but i like it better when he's in the middle of the sidewalk so let's cut that off right there okay here's another street crossing but i didn't get to hit the button here because somebody else hit the button so we'll skip that one and then here's him getting home see just the last little bit actually i like it further along right there it's like there i'll get rid of the part before and after okay now i got to explain um yes i'm doing live with obs right now uh do i prefer editing imovie or screenflow for ease of use screenflow is definitely more professional there's more stuff i can do it's like halfway between final cut and imovie and of course there's a ton of stuff for doing screen like showing stuff on the screen so i like using screenflow better that's why i use it let's see so uh oh and thanks man for the uh the bird identification it's definitely not an eagle no uh but yeah uh cormorant is that how you say it yes i know those are in the park so uh makes sense there's actually this area where they all congregate during certain times of years like a breeding ground so anyway uh so here's the weird thing about my dog um i let my dog off the leash just as we're about to get to the front door you know the thinking is that i want him to know that if he's some reason outside of the house without uh you know supervision that he's like trying to just want to go through the door so you know i trained him to do that so i took him off the leash just as we're about to get in and then he runs up and he does his dance uh before getting into the house i don't know why we could be out for like an eight mile walk and he could be exhausted at the end and i'll still do this dance at the end but anyway so that's what you're about to see here um let's see i let him off the leash and you can see he just darts up there like a bat out of hell and gets up to the front where he does this dance so we'll pull that in oh that's like way too much so it gets off runs up there and and then here's like that dance okay all right anyway so we don't need to include that i might just break the sequence a little bit um but we do have uh going through the door here is another part of that same clip so right about there so here we go through the door and we can cut it right there and of course the first thing he wants to do uh is get a drink of water when he comes in i don't bring water on these short walks on the longer walk i would have brought water with but it still wouldn't drink enough so we want to get them running up to the water maybe something like right there because quick sequence i'm drinking the water maybe right there and then the last thing i did was i i gave him a treat for being a good boy and i actually say good boy here somewhere in the sequence let's see where is it that's it so here's me giving him the treat good boy that's a great place i think to fade out so i will split there and do that let's catch up on our transitions and and we've got like this thing basically done it's a little over a minute long let's put all these cross dissolves in there and then here we crosses off at the end but you know what i want this to be a longer fade out so let's do like one second here so now the end is like good this now i like here at the end i'm saying good boy or you know that deep voice that you do and then at the beginning here i say uh you want to go for a walk with a high-pitched voice right i don't know it's the kind of thing you know you throw into these um so uh see i'm just yeah this is jack in my house so i'm going to add sounds now because i want to do a soundtrack so i think a cool thing to do is just add a cool soundtrack here now i had this idea that at the beginning no soundtrack we're in the house we're doing this stuff i'll go for a walk and then time to go for a walk and then as soon as we're on the walk start the music so let's start it right here now go to audio and then i'm going to go you can go to you know my media i'm sorry you can go to audio and then go to music to grab something from your music of course you can't use apple music stuff you can't use anything that's got drm on it but if you have stuff you get from cds or or stuff you've created yourself stuff you create in garageband uh maybe in the future i'll do one of these live streaming things about creating a soundtrack in garageband um sound effects but go on sound effects there's a bunch of different sound effects some of these you may or may not have obviously if you don't have final cut pro you're not going to have these there's theme music and there's a bunch of stuff in here so you know some things here that i could add i i'm going to try a bunch i tried a bunch of these out just to you know so i wouldn't waste time trying to figure one out and i actually went to the jingles under eye life sound effects and there if you do time i can sort these by time and go up to the top here i need something long because it's one minute two seconds and it turns out there's one called buddy which i think is really nice so i'm going to add it here and stick it here you could stick stuff at the bottom underneath this line and it becomes like a you know a soundtrack or you can go up above and it attaches kind of to the clip so really doesn't matter here but so let's see where we want it to go yeah so he starts and then he goes on this walk [Music] all right so uh here we go this is longer than what we need let's reduce this here so we can see there we go so you can see it's a little longer so we have to trim this because we want it to stop when we go back in the house and fade out so let's see how that goes here [Music] i don't quite i like how that ended [Music] i like how it if it ends naturally by itself so i may want to actually pad out some of this there was stuff that we skipped that i could add in here but i won't go back to do that so it goes out like that so now we've got some cool music in the background now i may want to choose which sounds to keep and which to get rid of so one of the things i can do here is there were some things like remember in this clip there was a lot of you know traffic sound so you can grab this line and drag it down to the bottom right here to set the volume to zero or you could select this go to sound and then say mute and mute that one and then this one also you know crossing the street i'm going to look for anything there's a lot of sound and you know lower it if i want or mute it let me see and there's some stuff that i want [Music] i'd like to hear the pitter patter of his feet so there's a question about narration maybe we'll have time to investigate that um so anyway we go into here and it's finished and it fades out let's add some titles titles here so you can investigate these we want something we want to say like one eye jack king of city park so we could do that here a little dramatic this just is one thing that's also very dramatic i like this let's use this title here now we want to let's do it at the beginning scroll all the way back to the beginning here and i like that ease maybe let's do it when the music starts there's no reason the title has got to be the very beginning and here let's do one i'd jack and king of city park that's a little too big so i will change the font size 130 no 120 oops i'm 20 no and 10. there we go but now this is too big dude this is 100. so like that so oh it still didn't uh didn't do the line like i wanted let's um come on go down to 90. there we go and this is 70. like that boy it really doesn't want to put that on one line all right i'll do like that is it easier and more efficient to make this movie an imovie versus final cut pro nor mask that if you are good at final cut pro it's definitely better to use final cut pro it's a reason why it's pro you can do lots of really cool things really quickly but it's got a steeper learning curve so you definitely uh if you get final cut pro and he ate good at it you would never do this in imovie you would do it with the pro tool um but if you don't have final cut obviously you use imovie or if you haven't taken the time to become good at final cut pro then imovie is probably going to be a bit quicker all right so let's play around there was a talk about color correction before and i could do color correction on this um you know i could just grab everything give me a day to grab all you know and i could go in here to um let's see colors i could work with the colors instead of that i'm just going to do something simpler and use filters now there's indoor parts of this and outdoor parts of this so you know the actual parts obviously you have sunlight uh the indoor parts obviously are artificial light and also you know there's woods and carpet and everything in the indoor parts and there's grass and sidewalk and trees in the outdoor part so what if i use a different filter for the indoor and outdoor part if i grab these three pieces right here and i clicked on filters and change the clip filter to something uh i don't know let's we can preview stuff here romantic western we can look at probably not sepia or sepia i'm going to do something too dramatic but let's do kind of a western look sure of course you can do whatever you want and i'm going to do that for the end sequence here where he's inside again i'll change this to western and everything else i'm going to go and do a different filter i think i can't select a title i think oh there we go i'm going to do blockbuster so now we have different filters so there's the beginning indoor everything's a bit drab and then outside everything's looks different [Music] you try a different filter depending upon what you're doing and i like the fact that you know you're there we go so there's that so you can extract uh if you export from uh there's somebody asked the question uh weber asked the question by using live photos so i could you could use live photos for this you can extract the video from them i can't quite run off the top of my head how you do it i think you export from the photos app on your mac you export original and i think it gives you a movie clip and a photo there's definitely a way to do it i've shown it before so crtas about an obs studio question i don't know the answer to that i've never seen that invalid parameter i've never i've never seen that so probably should ask in an obs studio forum or something like that because the key would be somebody that's seen that before okay so so now we've got this so what do we do with it now that we've got this here it's one minute two seconds long it's nice hey if i wanted this to be on a service that trimmed video at one minute i could certainly find two seconds to remove from here if i wanted the song to complete and believe me i do because it's got a nice little end to this song i would probably add some more stuff to it to get a nice ending but i won't bore you with that now because i've shown you basically everything here let's talk about exporting so i'm going to click here and i need to name it i haven't named it this point sometimes i would like to actually create a new project and then immediately exit so i can name it but i'll call it jack in city park there we go and now i've got this i can click here and well i can just you know double click and go back in but i could also share this out if i go in here i can go to file share so let's share this out now i never use any of this stuff except file all this stuff here direct to vimeo direct to facebook direct to youtube forget it you want to use the actual native way to upload things using the web browser and all of that so you always want to export using file get a file and then from your file then go and uh upload so let's go and select some things here we can do hi best whatever i'll just use hi for the setting 1080 resolution and you know i can name it you know something and let's let's call it uh king of city park there compression faster better quality faster for now but i could do better quality if i wanted to next and then where do i want to save it i'll save it here to the desktop just so i have easy access to it and i'll export you can see this little circle here is going to show me the progress and so it's going to take about one minute to export and then we'll see the final file and what i'd like to do is i'd like to be able to play it for you and let's see if i can with the sound hopefully and there it's done i'll hide that and there it is here now if this works correctly i can play it out um we'll go for walking [Music] so [Music] so good boy so hopefully that worked um of course i would keep working with this uh as i said i think i would pat it out to uh you know a minute and a half uh maybe some of those pieces i missed because i want to have maybe have that song complete if you hear the whole song you'd be like yeah be nice to have this complete or maybe find a song that's just one minute and then i would play around with each sequence maybe do another pass like look at each clip and see does this start and stop at exactly the right place believe me if i did that for every single clip in this thing it would it would like jump by 10 or 20 in terms of quality just adjusting the beginning and ending of each clip um just to get it just right maybe if he's turning his head or an eye movement or something like that and i'm catching it or not catching it in each clip go through play with it maybe adjust also you know i didn't play with the filters for the flowers there those flower photos so maybe play with those maybe make those a different filter take the filter away from them um keep adjusting keep playing around with it until you're you know you're happy with it more time you put into it the better it's going to get and at some point you got to say it's good enough and you've got a fun video that you can share so um so as i said uh you know ask me uh this will be this will be up afterwards and ask me in the comments if you have questions about how i built this and uh everything that i did and all of that uh i hope uh you got something out of this and i hope this format really works for maybe a more in-depth look at how things are actually created and if it does let me know or you know if you have some ideas let me know too because i hope to maybe use this format in the future for showing other things that maybe don't fit really great in a five or ten minute direct tutorial uh i do want to of course mention again thanks to my patreon subscribers you can go to macmost.com patreon if you want to support macmost also i should note that there is a i have an imovie course at courses.macmost.com that goes into much more detail about using all different aspects of imovie way beyond what i did here so i think that's it for now thanks for watching [Music]
