Kaja book willis hello everyone in this video I'm gonna teach you 31 plus must know georgian words and phrases so if you need to channel welcome my name is Ryan I'm a former Peace Corps volunteer I lived in Georgia for about four years it's a place that I love I have a lot of friends there and I still continue to study language even till today so the purpose of this video is you know we have a Facebook group and there was people saying that their motivation to study Georgian is that they're gonna go and visit so I thought I would make a video that hey if I'm gonna teach you you know the most common and useful phrases just based on your going there for a short while and you know maybe don't have a lot of time to study then here's the things that you have to know and I think it's great for anyone starting out or who doesn't have a lot of time to put into it that hey you just learn you just memorize the most common words and phrases but of course you know if you're gonna go deeper with the language you'll have to take kind of a more systematic approach but that'll be for a different video so as far as formats I'm gonna go over each of the the words maybe give a little bit of cultural background or some context and how to use it after their kind of each grouping of words I'll do kind of an audio or just a repeat of the words that you can follow along with me so that you don't have to listen through all the explanation once again and then I'll probably do that at the end as well with all of the words so with that let's get started gamma Joba gamma jo Bob gamma Java and this means hello it's a word that you can use that pretty much any time of the day and this it's works it's something that is formal enough in probably 90% of cases you'll be fine using it 95% of cases and the only time I recommend not to use it is if you go to someone's funeral funeral in that case you would use any different greeting row good car bro good car and that means how are you it's singular you could also say rogue or cut the two at the end and that just means plural it also makes it more formal for how are you god oh god oh god and this means I'm well so the person says robot heart you can say god oh god I'm well and to note also car God is also a way of saying goodbye Moldova Moldova and this means thank you if you wanna say thank you very much or literally big things you'd say DD mud Loba DET mod loba if maybe you're a real language person and you can you've got good pronunciation or you really want to impress Georgians you could say we'll go to messy mud Lobo who could or messy mud Lobo and that means like the deepest things come a java yogurt car car god ma Globa TD moldova chené chené and with that defend defend and so they both mean you the first one is singular and the second one is plural so if you ask a person a robot car they made something like they may say god god shin or god oh god it's clean it means I'm well and yourself if they say to Quinn and it's just talking to you and you're one person it's just a way of making it more formal not who I'm this not qualm this so not much to say about this one but it just means goodbye mem quia mem quia gorgeous McCrea McCrea so that may means I and the McCrea means I'm called and because in Georgian when you use the verbs the pronouns are implied you don't you don't even have to say them actually so I could just say something like anion even queer that I anemic we're which means my name is Ryan or if your name was Sarah you'd say ceramic weeow they're not queer Iraq queer which means what is your name or what are you called so la means what Korea is you are called you could a data at the end which makes it plural and so I would recommend especially if you're if you're a younger person talking someone older in Georgia it's typically cultural to be kind of respectful and use a more formal way of talking so you could say then I would create a second kind of thing is that they don't really say ah good quiet they don't really separate that I find it's a little bit more natural for Georgians to kind of string them together so if you want to sound more natural try to put it together Shan Shan nah qualms this men queer rock weeow sassy move Noah sassy amove Noah so this means it is a pleasure so I've been kind of going in order with guessing sort of a conversation of hey how are you I'm well thanks you and then after meeting a person and getting their name you would say something like it's a pleasure side uncut sayyid on hot so this is where are you from and I do this in here because a lot of times if you start talking Georgian and you look for in Georgians will probably ask you where are you from just to note as well again these are one of these verbs if you had a two at the end and it's maybe just you a single person the Georgian maybe just trying to be more formal with you or if you're a group of people they may ask you cite down cut like where are all of you from so if you want to answer you could say something if you're maybe you're from America you could say a medic Eve done Bob so America done is from but I am maybe if you're from Germany you could say something like get our money done or if you're from France you say sopla and get it done alright so you could throw the vaad in there like I am or you could just say I'm medically done that's pretty easy sahar saddlery car so this means worried from ethnically where it's the previous one side on heart or side on heart is kind of like what what's your citizenship so I find that you're Jews were often see this one maybe if you say you're from America but you look Asian or you're african-american just because Georgians are used to like what they see in the movies they'll assume that an American person is maybe someone who's white or a lot of visitors to Georgia are Russian tourists or European so if you're someone maybe Asian or a different ethnicity they may just ask you you know what their what your estimate city is and so don't take it personally they're just curious where you're from so if they do ask you that for instance me I'm Japanese so a lot of times I'll say yep Oh Nelly God yup or Nelly wow that means I am Japanese or I miss I say something like Iaconelli Mary Kelly bar which means I'm a Japanese American you could appear German you could say something like Ganner Minnelli loud there's a bunch of other ones out there but so it just has that deadly ending which means like a type of person er that's your ethnicity sassy amano sedan car America Danville Sidora car America levar there's actually three words here and they all mean yes because there are three different ways to say yes in Georgia and they have different levels of formality so the first one is dia the second one is key II and the third one is oh oh so the first one the is the most formal the second one key is a moderate level of formality or just common and the third one is the least formal and this means no and another cultural thing is instead of actually using the word odda sometimes Georgians will do it which also means no Garvey kuraki or the short form is Chi guy and this means okay or good and this is super common super useful if maybe you want to agree to something you can just say gaudy or guy or if someone's saying something is good they'll say gotta go it's good so are useful memorize that one dia hey Cole ah de cada be I Bodhi she Bodhi she and this means I'm sorry it's a way to apologize for doing something ooh God sort of odd ooh God solid so this is a word that's a little bit different than the past word Bodhi she this is a word you'd probably use more like parting so if you're gonna stop someone in the street instead of saying Bodhi she which sounds more like your real apologetic it's kind of just like oh pardon me excuse me you can say oh god Sarah but shades live shades live so this means it is allowed and you can use it to ask a question so if you want to say some say like is something allowed you could do like you know if you're wondering if taking a picture is allowed you could like do the mining and say shades lava or if you want to maybe smoke a cigarette he could show someone a cigarette and say shades lava and they would respond and say something like key shades live ah yes it's allowed so that's a very useful word to know so the next one is guy may owed it to shades Libba guy may owe it to shades live ah and so this means repeat please it's using the word that we use shades LaBeouf and the last one and two shades lava is like a phrase that you could use which means like please it literally means if it's allowed but it basically means please and guy mailed it means repeat so please repeat so this is a very formal way it's very polite but I want to teach you kind of more on the polite side of things so that you don't come across as too informal when you're talking two Georgians actually is mean de mean de and also our mean de our mean de so this means I want and our mean that means I don't want so R is the negating it negates whatever your verb the verb that you're using Budi she cuts robot shades neva I mailed it to shades liver mean de arminda modey modey and this means come here maybe you started speaking judging with one person and they go and tell their friends and then they'll make sure you know the same modey modey and they'll do this to have you come and talk to more of their friends or maybe you'll see a mother and a child and they'll say something like well DIAC which means I come here you know so Modi is very common it's obvious it's obvious so this means let's go and so as you're starting to speak to Georgians and especially if you're out in the regions that you may get invited out somewhere you know if you're a foreigner speaking George a George's may invite you to a Supra which is a Georgian feast Georgians are some of the most hospitable people in the world so cultural notes if you do get invited and you can stop by a store pick up a nice box of chocolates or a lot of cognac that's a nice gift to take to a home when you're going there for the first time another thing with that is in Georgia and maybe some other countries as well I'm not sure but this is a sign to say like let's go drink so someone may do that and say it's oh it's you know let's let's go drink so we do plan to drink know that Georgians can drink a lot so exercise caution Omar Jose Gauchos so this is cheers in Georgian so going along with kind of the if you get invited out to a Supra this is very important they'll be cheers into a lot of different things and so for instance if you want to say cheers to Friendship for instance you'd say something like Mego bravas galimov Joe's or cheers to Georgia you'd say Sicard ellos el macho's so this is a very common word and you'll hear it a lot of times at supras modey modey rock solid it supra gal Marge's god Jarrod gosh at it and this means to stop something so if you're in a marsuit go which is the georgian bus it's asking the driver to stop the bus or if you're in a taxi it's telling the person to stop the taxi so this will be very useful if you're traveling around the country mishra lit Michelet Michelet so this is a word that means help me god forbid something would happen to you where you have to use that phrase but it would be useful to know how to say help you know so this is a word that's asking for help from people around you ah Pierce Pierce and this is how much does it cost SOTA nella ela Barakat SOTA nella ela barakat so today Allah is a pocket so this literally means tota which is a little nella slowly ela Barakat is to speak slowly so it's asking so much to say art asking someone to please speak slowly and so I remember this phrase along with the other one guy who made it - Shay's above both very formal phrases but I remember in Peace Corps it was a couple of the phrases that we learned right off the bat because we often were asking people to please speak slowly or please repeat something so these are very useful words when you're trying to just getting started in your learning journey yeah gah Vijay there gal Vijay so this means I don't understand and you could pair it with something like you could say Varig avi gay guy mailed it to shades live ah it's like I don't understand please repeat it and then if you understand that you'd say Gavi gay Gavi there which means how I understand God Jared Michelet release Sultan illa illa Potter get there Garvey Sadat is Sedaris so where is something so for instance if you're wondering where the toilet is you can see duality cidades or magazine cidade is like where is the toilet and where is the restaurant s that is s Roddy's and with that is released these rallies so this means what is this and the second one is what is that so if you're traveling around if maybe you're at a shop and you're looking and pointing at something you could say s Nadi's like what is this or if you're traveling around and you're sightseeing maybe you're pointing at a building or something and you see a monastery and you're like east Dottie's like what is that and also note sometimes you may hear it as adi instead of Audis it's just a short kind of slang way of saying karma Java roguish our our God Madhava TD Madhava Shane Shane na homeless man crea rock we are sassy move Noah side and her America Danville Sidora her America leave our dear ki O Hara gargy I bode she who cuts rabid shades neighbor guy married two shades lever Minda arminda modey modey AK salad it supra Kalmar juice carrot Michelet rogers certain illa-allah pocket verga VJ Sedaris to let ISA Dallas malasiya cidades s rallies East Dallas so that's the end of the list if there's words that you think should have made it in there that didn't go ahead and leave them in the comment section maybe I'll add them to another video and again this was kind of just a crash course in what do you have to know if you've got a short amount of time and you're playing to visit Georgia you just want to know what's useful basic conversation words and phrases I think it's great in the beginning I think it's a great way to stay engaged but if you do want to go deeper with the language you know you start you need to start learning more patterns you need to learn understand how Georgian verbs verbs especially work and not just memorizing you know useful words and phrases but I'll try to make more videos that goes into that stuff as well so until next time throw a beat
