Watched and enjoyed. IMO, Webby comes through with good content. I wondered what the device stuck to Lea's left upper arm was. My wife said it was most likely a glucose monitor which (according to her) was becoming quite popular as people strive for optimum performance. Anyone?

foreign [Music] and today I am at the Wolverine pickleball Warehouse in Ann Arbor Michigan for a very special day and the reason is so special is there are pro clinics going on all day here featuring Leia Jansen and Sydney Sunday and most of you probably know that Leia Jansen is one of the top ranked players in all of pro pickleball Leia was nice enough to allow me to hook up a microphone to her and record one of her clinics all the way through so today I'm going to be covering the 3.5 to 4.0 clinic and even though I won't be participating in the clinic I'm hoping that I as well as any of you watching this video will be able to learn a few things based on the information they go over during the clinic so let's go check it out the first hour we're gonna drill how I would drill we're going to do a lot of the drills that I like to do and then there is two parts of this there's drilling it and then there's being able to apply it to live ball right and being able to do that so we're going to start off with some good old-fashioned dinking we're gonna do three progressions of this right foot to right foot then we're going to go left foot to left foot then we're going to put it all together and do it and do it all okay so right now we're just working on this a big part of what I want to focus on for this group is our pivot step and taking balls out of the air okay too often I'm I see this and then I'm back here okay so we really want to work on not holding the line because people play off the line but being relatively close to it taking balls out of the air when needed and focusing really on our technique which is just keeping it nice and short less is more in this game okay we're not trying to do anything fancy or anything like that we're just pushing our paddle face out keeping our hips behind the ball and hitting the ball in a good contact spot does anyone know what the ideal contact point in pickleball is where you hit the ball in relation to your body so the perfect contact point is at hip or like belly button level a little bit out in front you could even maybe say like like your thigh sometimes okay and a little bit out in front I'm not back here because then I'm using my wrist I'm not over here because then I use my wrist so we're trying to make sure we have the proper footwork okay then we'll go left foot to left foot so we're doing that I'm working on taking that out of the air now we're just working it around okay Sydney and I are gonna play a game where first to five airs all you can do is Dink when a ball Rises up that's okay you can hit it but we're not just speeding it up unless someone gives it to us okay so it's going to look like this if we do this right it should be pretty tiring okay I pop it up again okay then she wins so once you pop it up try and make do then the point starts but what I don't want to see is if we're both making good dinks this like just all of a sudden speeding up out of nowhere Sydney are gonna really walk around and do a lot of Hands-On kind of teaching rather than just me stand here for 30 minutes so don't be afraid to ask questions all right foot to right foot right foot to right foot not using a lot of wrist pushing our paddle out to the Target okay Lynch we're gonna go left foot to left foot now so same same thing on just as your forehand don't just and that really push out to your target target grab that line nice dink nice good way to take it out of the air nice Focus here guys nice Focus out to that Target nice look at that dink nice very good very good very good looking good guys looking good now ready we're gonna go into our game to five okay so remember we're not just speeding up we're do you have to win by dinking the only way you can win is just by placing good dinks and getting a pop-up no speeding up off the bounce if you do you go minus one so lost a point lost a point yeah because you said hey if you want a good Focus drill if you can do if you do this drill for just 30 minutes and you want to do that you can get your dinking so much better and it's literally it's boring but you got to focus on it go nice good reset okay so I don't want to get too particular because everybody has their own technique but you follow through quite a bit on your shots so if you feel like when you're dinking if the ball's sailing high too much I want you to just watch your follow through just shorten it just paddle face out to your target you don't need the Nadal so we're before we go to our drill we're going to warm our hands up we're gonna do some fast hands and then we're also going to work on blocking okay when people ask me how do I get a lot better how do I move up like a 0.5 level I always say transition zone and it's too many people when an attack comes they just swing away to have the ability to take Pace off and reset it is huge especially how many people play against a banger on a weekly basis yeah taking Pace off is something that we really need to work on so that being said we're just going to warm up our hands first Sydney and I are just going to go straight ahead at each other and we're just going chest to chest short swings trying to keep it in front I'm not trying to hit her I'm not trying to like really win this hands battle or go down at her feet we're just warming our hands up short swing trying to see the ball okay so goes like this right here okay what's one thing you notice about our uh body positioning we're not back like this so when facts fast exchanges come I really want you guys to be on the balls of your feet and kind of shoulders leaning forward not like this but like like we're about to guard somebody in basketball you have to be ready for anything to come okay so we're just gonna do a few of these trying to get as many in a row as we can does anyone have a two-handed counter here cool so you're just gonna work on that it's really tough to do a swing so try and shorten it then we're gonna go to the second drill which is basically I'm going to dink Cindy's gonna drink to me I'm gonna do a half pace speed up not a big speed up so I don't want to see this I'm gonna go to the side like that's not what I want to see I want to see this and Sydney's gonna reset it and then I go again and she's going to reset it and then dink it back and I'm gonna go again so it's a Cooperative drill this isn't meaningless for me I'm trying to work on my attacks do you notice what does my attack look like does it look like I'm about to attack or does it somewhat look like my dink yeah and it's not like I'm trying to be fancy I just go from here and instead of dinking I just attack it okay so I don't want to see big swings what she is doing is she's keeping her wrists firm kind of angled out and as she's hitting it she's just trying to take a little bit of pace off just like a little bit of Boom okay it's not a lot of this she's just losing her grip and trying to like create some feel if that makes sense okay so see it one more time her wrist is always up and she's getting it out in front okay this is a very tough shot and then I'll call switch and she'll speed up on me okay we're going to work on these two things because after that we're going to demo a live ball game and then we're done with the kitchen line hands up back to that ready position each time so you want that hand up to be above your wrist and just kind of feel like you're high-fiving somebody there you go hands up hands up guys there you go much better so you're a little late there and then it caught you those other ones where you were doing so well you just went boom boom nice good rally here very good guys very good okay everybody's hands warmed up okay so now we're gonna go to blocking so we're gonna change gears and we're not swinging back now now we're taking Pace off same ready position though we're just slanting our paddles a little bit more into trying to take some Pace off okay if you have any questions on the technique that's where Sid and I are walking around non number side is speeding up numbered side you are blocking [Applause] foreign awesome guys this is perfect here you go so on that one you're like this okay so you countered back what I want it to be is a little more like this so you can take a little bit more Pace off no not like that keep it like that keep it up and firm still there okay then honestly I would just go to a wall but secondly you just kind of have to it's good a lot more yeah you're gonna have to have your paddle out more and you see how you're angling it this way I bet you anything you're not angling this one like this yeah so you wanna you wanna open it up and just think like it doesn't need to be like this but the bottom Edge leads a little bit because that's how you take a little Pace off but you see how you're kind of like that my left hand's better than my right hand every everybody has a weaker side so I just think it's about keeping it up like that and just learning to open that face and keep it in front of you there perfect nice awesome and remember as someone's attacking us let's be on the balls of our feet on the balls of our feet not on our heels what we're gonna do is essentially tie our dinking our speed UPS our counters and our blocks all together with this kitchen drill okay so when we start including the feed you have to make four dinks between everybody if you don't make four dinks it's a null redo it no points okay after that after the fourth dink the points live now I don't want to see one two three four slam ball okay I want to see you guys try and work the point and we're going to focus on like when you need to block you're going to try and block when you see it coming you're going to counter you're going to try and use your dinking to get some pop-ups make sense so here's how it looks one two three four now we're live so that would have counted so zero one yeah go for it one two three four look at that dink Point guys so that's what we're doing now say I get a ball give me a decent ball that I can speed up on I'm going to and then we just play the point out from there okay so I always say kind of look at your footwork and your positioning if I'm like this am I gonna wanna speed up okay but that's actually where I see a lot of people speed up they're just like boom panic and go I'm Gonna Wanna speed up on a ball like this so if a ball is like this I'm I can probably speed up off the bounce okay if you're offensive in your positioning meaning like you're leaning in the ball sitting up you can take it out of the air or something like that then you can be aggressive if I'm neutral I'm probably just going to hit a neutral shot back if I'm defensive I'm gonna hit the defensive shot back so that means like the most common error I see is push me out here I swear everyone does it when they're like or they'll try and hit a really aggressive dink like right over there and they always miss it okay I respect your opponent's shot and the biggest thing is this is like I don't think I've ever gotten a stat sheet back and I had like 20 winners to like if I have 20 winners my my air count is usually up usually it's like if I have a good match I have 10 winners in three airs or nine winners and four errors like my air count is always low when my winner count is high it's because I'm just going for broke and my air count is is high as well so this is a game of airs not winners we're gonna be moving up and down the courts I'm gonna call time winners will move up losers will move down and then we'll split all right let's do it now it's live okay so that's a point great shot nice footwork boom oh great Point guys great Point good hands good so less wrist out of the air you look you're kind of flicking it just get it at a good height and then just push take a little bit of pace off a little bit of pace off there you go nice that's the right shot though that's the right chop though yeah right middle but you were trying to take Pace off that's good we're gonna do a mid-court transition drill she is working on trying to keep me back okay so getting really good at hitting fourth balls hitting fourth balls is super important because you can pressure somebody and you can make the kitchen just seem small and make it really hard for people to get in I am working on my mid-court transition defense I always say if you want to get better you better start spending the time here this is how I improve my doubles game immensely and this is how pretty much in every level if you can just keep the ball alive you'll win a lot of matches okay so there's minimal movement here I'm on the balls of my feet I'm low my elbows are in front and I'm letting Sydney give me the power and letting my paddle do the work okay so she's just gonna take it at me and I'm looking at just putting it in the kitchen and she's just gonna keep speeding up and it's pretty simple that way Sydney's really working on her attacks taking balls out of the air when she can and just making it difficult for me now notice she's still being cooperative she's not like that okay good too often people get so frustrated here you're more than likely gonna get crushed like I just got crushed but just keep like an open mind and do it because then Sydney's gonna go back okay you want to make it difficult but if you notice unless she got something that was really high she wasn't just murdering me on she's just trying to go at me pretty good and Cooperative about a six or a seven would you say and then after that we're gonna do some drops okay so my goal for this group is for you guys to get 10 drops in a row before we end it that might be tough but I really think we can do it she is just trying to make it drop and we're together trying to get 10 in a row notice her form it's very nice and simple paddle in front she drops her wrist below her hand and she's stepping into it nothing fancy not a big swing nice and I'm just working on taking balls out of the air or if I have to let it bounce I let it bounce and keep her back okay my goal is for each side to get 10. if you get past 10 keep going see how many you can get to nice I like the take out of the air though you just raised up say down and through nice that's good so firmer wrist your wrist is really loose keep that wrist firm so on footwork you asked about yeah when you are up here hitting Force you want to take a pivot step back so if I'm attacking a fourth I'm going to take a pivot step back and then I hit it so then I reach in you right now you're just letting the ball play yeah yeah take a pivot step so if it's behind you and you're like this and you're breaking your wrist you know you probably should have taken that one out of the air so you're just going to find your range for me and you're about my height if the ball is coming a foot away from me and it's about at my shins I'm taking that out of the air yeah yeah everything reset right now here this is what you look like right here if you just had it you have to keep that elbow in front and then just you have to keep your wrist firm on this one because they're giving you the pace so then just right there a little bit just just open like that you do it exactly like that on your backhand yeah so um also when I'm this way what number should I have my paddle strength on because I think that maybe it's too loose and that's why my wrist does not hurt it should be about a four or five it looks like it's just like literally about to fall out of your hand okay I'm gonna hit you if you hit it to her forehand all four hands here there that's good now hit it out of the air make it so it's out of the air money so that one's a little bit like this so when it goes higher just raise it to the level and keep it open so I'm gonna hit this a little higher ready there just raise it to the level if it's high it can't be down like that okay non number side back it up you're gonna make ten drops in a row we're gonna do it for four minutes if you get to 10 try and get to 15. if you don't get to 10 that's fine we're just working on it okay trying to get as many reps as we can before we switch nice very good very good transfer your guys's weight forward transfer weight forward nice good footwork [Applause] so you're trying to help this up a lot think of it you're trying to help it up like this rather than just transferring your weight and extend you want to think extend not go up because if you go up you're gonna top it and it's gonna go nowhere extend there you go much better extend perfect good looking good so instead of kind of using your upper body like this I I want you much yeah I want you to feel like you're stepping into it and like your paddle face should go out to the Target so there's a lot of this instead of just a lot of this go through it and set it up through there drop that wrist and step into it that's really good perfect so on your forehand you're pretty much like hips facing here just like this doesn't need to be huge but just do a little subtle turn and then step into it so you're not just using your arm and falling back if that makes sense okay so we're tying together drops transition dinking everything above so we're going to play a game to seven this side will always feed nicely in I'm gonna feed you guys a drop and they're gonna work together on moving in so say Sydney hits a bad drop and she hits it high what should they do right you guys want to stay back okay what if she hits a good drop no pressure like that what should they do they want to start creeping in together remember this is not like a race to get to the kitchen line it is in a way but you just want to start gaining some you just want to start gaining some grout if that makes sense so you and your partner want to move up sometimes you might hit one shot to get in sometimes you might hit four shots to get in doesn't matter okay so they're going to communicate with one another and we're just going to play it out from there ready okay so then our point back it up here you go that's you nice so then we just keep on going so that's where our dinking ties into it we're looking to create that opportunity one more get in nice [Applause] okay I don't want to see this turn into slam ball we're really working on tying everything together is sit or I see it we might just be like you guys lost the point if we continually see like bad trigger pulls and stuff like that remember if you're defensive in your positioning you don't want to hit an offensive shot game of Errors not a game of winners okay get in guys get in hands up hands up good point good point good point [Applause] what a shot go go nice look at that soft set up the the winner it's amazing works like clockwork well I think you probably need to think a little bit less and just try and focus on the ball and just try and focus on your positioning and keep things simple if you're thinking a lot out there when I think a lot that's when everything falls apart if I kind of just try and get on a flow and focus on the things that I can control then it helps okay the serve in return have my two Pet Peeves in pickleball okay and they are on the serve is when there's never no man's land in pickleball except after you serve so if I serve and I creep up here and then the ball goes past me I see it all the time and it drives me crazy so you want to serve and stay back let it bounce up to you so I can hit a drop okay now Vice Versa on the return side I see people do this all the time I start like this how am I supposed to get in you want to give yourself a little bit of room step into it so I can get up to the net and use that forward momentum okay too often it's at least once a clinic when I go I see this serve I'll stay back I can't get in so Sydney's gonna come take the net for me and that's an easy point from her never in doubles do I want to see the return person stay back there's never an instance I don't care if you hit a bad return get up there you're going to lose the point I work a lot on my returns though because of singles singles is huge for returns and uh that's where really I feel like the top girls separate themselves so the top guys we might miss a few but if you notice like you watch Annalee play she's hitting balls this far deep on her return and she does it just because she works on it a lot and she has the right footwork let's do it go to a court warm up I'm going to call one minute each side you're just gonna hit a serve hit a return catch it and keep doing that until I call switch you'll switch roles and then we're gonna play some Red games and then you guys are free return catch okay go ahead return catch there we go warming it up good depth good depth so give yourself a little bit of room a little bit of room one step back I want you to take one step back okay there you go now step in step in boom you see how much deeper you get that and then you have forward momentum to get to the net nice that was a great return good footwork there you go okay we're just gonna start out on your court play a game play a game going up to 11 you won't get to 11 because I'm gonna call time and we're gonna switch up and down trying to work on everything that we just did for an hour and a half okay [Applause] all right foreign go nice get in so make sure you're gaining no no you're gaining a little bit of ground each time you guys the first drop was a little bit high but then it was a good reset and you were way back there just eat inch up each time inch up oh what a get you got it reset nice great Point guys great Point great point from the beginning to the end I saw a massive Improvement and just imagine if you went out and did these simple drills every single day that's what I do that's what Cindy does when she plays like we just do this every day as monotonous and as boring as it is you start seeing returns so it's a lot easier second thing is I'm a little bit different I don't think my way or the highway when you guys come here this is how I see the game being played but maybe that does not click for you not saying my way is wrong if something I said click though remember that and go with it but if it didn't click that's fine just forget about it don't overthink it makes sense but take what really clicked and what what works that's what I've started doing when I started playing I had a lot of people in my ear and then I just kind of decided for myself what I thought was valuable information or not and it's really helped me a ton does anyone have any questions on anything in my so she said if she returns and for their third shot because we were working on drops they choose to drive which you guys will see a lot of should she reset it and no that's just mainly when you're being attacked very rarely should you on Fourth balls fourth Follies you just want to stick them and keep them back because they're already back so you just want to keep them there I'm not a big advocate for the touch shots to bring them up people will get there people are fast they can anticipate it you really gotta hit a good shot and it's only a few people like a Jay davilier has the touch to hit that shot so it's just a volley you're just taking their Pace just like a counter short swing take their Pace out in front a good way to practice it is just go against the wall and boom it's just like that you can practice your hands and your volleys like that [Music] man that was an awesome Clinic even though it was behind the camera the whole time and wasn't actually participating in it I absolutely was able to learn some stuff while recording hopefully you guys were able to learn while watching this video but this was great stuff Leia Jackson and Sydney Sunday put on a great clinic so if they ever come to your area do yourselves a favor do a clinic with them you will not regret it and Leia's actually doing another clinic with Advanced players back there right now like I said she's doing clinics all day here at Wolverine pickleball but that's going to do it for us here today and until next time this is Webby not Eddie signing off thank you [Music]
