today we're going to talk about how to use the new layout builder module in Drupal 8 this module is a new experimental in Drupal 8.5 so I'm just gonna go ahead and enable it and then we're gonna head over to the configuration so the layout builder is something that you can configure either on a per content type basis or a per node basis so we'll start out looking at the settings for content types so if I go over to structure content types and pick the content type that I want to customize I'm just going to go to the normal manage display tab and here I see that there's a new button here for a manage layout so I don't see the standard list of fields with the formatter settings I have to click on manage layout the layout builder allows you to add new sections each section has a layout of its own could be a two column or three column layout and these are things that you can define in themes and modules so I can go ahead and add a two column layout for example which gives me different sections of the page where I can add blocks so for example if I wanted to position a block here I click the add block link I get a list of blocks that shows up over on the right-hand side of the page and I can position either standard Drupal blocks here or elements that come from the content so in this case elements that come from my article content type so for example I have a social media links block that I could position on the page like this I can also drag in elements from the content itself so I already have the image appearing here I can drag it over to the right and I can do the same thing with the other fields so I can drag and drop the text fields around as well once I have all the fields the way that I want them I'll scroll up to the top of the page and save the layout so just to be clear what I've done here is I've created a new layout for the article content type and now when I go and create new article content on my site or if I already have existing articles they'll all use that layout so here I'm going to create a sample article with some test content I can upload a nice image and then my article is going to use the layout that I created using the layout builder another thing we can do with the layout builder is to enable layout customizations per node so if I go back to my content type configuration and I go to the manage display page for each content type I have this option to allow custom content to have its own layout be customized now when I'm looking at an article I have a new layout tab that I can use to customize the layout for that individual article so if I scroll down here I can see that I have the same tools for adding sections and placing blocks and I can drag and drop the elements around the page and this is only going to affect this node it's important to note that the layout builder module is an experimental module for Drupal 8 this means that it's not safe to use this module in production yet and that there's going to be changes to how this module works that means that I think it's a really exciting tool for content authors and site builders and we should be trying out this tool and giving feedback to the layout initiative team
