[Music] hello and thanks for watching eat your backyard my youtube channel where i talk about all kinds of edible landscaping and tropical things and in this case i'm talking about the laurel oak [Music] which is common to the southeastern united states and you can see we're flying right by the knobby bark of one right there that was a maybe 15 year old tree you're looking here at something more like a 25 year old tree 20 year old tree and you can see the shape of it is just beautiful that canopy spreading out and one of the things that people ask is what's the difference between a laurel oak and a live oak and i want to cover that in this video well the live oak gets to be about 60 to 80 feet tall spreading out to about 120 feet wide potentially whereas the laurel oak gets to about 60 or 70 feet and the canopy only gets 35 to 45 feet wide typically now that's a significant difference a width of a tree width of a plant you can see the structure of the branches here they do like to be trimmed both of them and it is recommended i would say the live oaks have a high tolerance for salt that's one quality that stands out whereas the laurel oak does not lower oaks do better in wet environments certainly so if you have heavy water in your area a lower look is tending to do better they both have these drooping branches and you can see this is a park so they do not tolerate the growth of droopy branches so people can use the park but that's a typical characteristic you could have them growing down you know foot from the ground if you let them and a lot of people do i don't know if you remember that scene in forest gump where they're dangling yeah that's from an oak tree like this that's just letting it do its natural thing uh potential problems are they can get rotten they can fall down they're very heavy hard wood you know if you have it anywhere near your house and that falls on it we're talking about almost certain damage so keep that in mind and i'd keep them trimmed you know that's one way to do it if you let them go full on this is the kind of these are the kinds of trees that can get six to eight feet wide the width so the laurel oak is actually considered to be a short-lived oak because it only typically gets to be about the lifespan of a human that's an interesting factoid about the laurel oak it shares our same general lifespan so thank you for watching maybe you'll choose to get a lower look if you've stayed this long you're true believer and let me tell you that there are links in the description to learn more about lower looks so thank you for watching go ahead and subscribe go ahead click the notification bell that way you'll be notified as these cool new videos come out i found my mavic air 2 drone over beautiful things like this quite a bit and give you my thoughts would love to have you with us please leave some comments let us know what you think do you have a lure look what has your experience been we'd all like to know thanks for watching eat your backyard [Music] [Music] you
