hi everybody I have glasses on because I've been chronically on the computer for the last eight years and I'm told to wear these a little bit more when I'm on the computer to help with my eyesight and considering uh this might be a very long video I have them on please don't make fun of me today's video will be covering The Last of Us HBO show in order to make my points I'm gonna have to use a lot of footage from it which will most likely get this video immediately copyright striked without a moment's notice so if you feel like it and wouldn't mind I would really appreciate if you gave my merchandise store a bit of a look is down in the description is orchidate.com we have a wide variety of different kinds of options shirts hoodies they have different kinds of game materials like dice mats we have poster prints there's like a pretty solid amount of stuff there there's a shirt slash hoodie that has thick thighs save lives in Latin or like that one you've got your red bar no maidens look and there's a ton others so if you'd like to support me in a more direct way in this video I would really really appreciate it it's all down in the description and let's get on with our topic hello everybody my name is Brookie I make videos on video games reviews discussions things like that for the most part one of my most favorite games of all time is The Last of Us I played this title when it launched in the later years of the PS3 as I was a a pretty big Naughty Dog Fanboy and it already entrenched myself in the three Uncharted games they released prior to call The Last of Us uh shock would have been the understatement of the Year Not only was it supremely violent that a subject matter completely at odds with their previous titles it was also better than those previous tiles which after Uncharted 2 was quite a serious feat while no game is perfect The Last of Us is one that I think it's shockingly close with incredible voice acting Graphics combat pacing Story characters etc etc at infinitum the game was also something I haven't quite made a nickname for but we can call it couch couple games where someone could play the game with a significant other on the couch with them and not just follow along but have become invested in the game despite them not normally having an interest in video games it's extremely accessible so much so that in a normal situation most of the time they would fade in and out of intrigue focusing on the more movie-like moments such as cutscenes but with such visceral and intense combat the last of us can keep someone uninterested in the world of video games invested even during the Hands-On moments I see it as a phenomenal game and while it doesn't break new ground with its genre it's a pretty standard third-person shooter about it father daughter Dynamic and zombie apocalypse it's how that story is told the refusal to hold back that grit that horror and to flesh out complicated morally gray characters which is why it really was the perfect choice for a TV show adaptation foreign video game was released in June of 2013 and stars two main characters Joel and Ellie it takes place 20 years after the Apocalypse in which a mutated version of the cordyceps virus has made its way over to humans turning them into zombie-like creatures with a fungus Motif Joel is an older Smuggler well into his 50s and his task was smuggling a young 14 year old girl named Ellie who has been bitten by the infected and yet has miraculously not turned leading to the assumption that she is immune from the virus the game is roughly 10 hours long and goes to a seasonal model and by season I mean winter summer spring fall in each season Joel and Ellie meet up with a specific character do some tasks or are thrown into a situation with them and move on to the next in The Last of Us the HBO show released in 2023 We have basically the exact same style of situation split up into Nine episodes varying in length but normally around an hour each in place of Troy Baker voicing Joel We have current Internet Daddy Pedro Pascal from Santiago Chile in place of Ellie voiced by Ashley Johnson that's a big boy we have Bella Ramsey most notable for her role in Game of Thrones for the most part the last of a show and game follow each other extremely closely their stories are near identical with variations present only in slight plot situations with exception on certain characters the runtime of the two is also quite similar as the show being Nine episodes puts it around nine hours of watch time with the game coming in just a little bit more than that however the most notable difference between the two is that the show is no need for gameplay the actual playing of the game is not present so while a significant portion of the game is well a game that run time is filled with additional bits of backstory to characters and environments that we do not originally have in 2013. let me start by saying this video will contain spoilers for everything I think that I'm able to get my points across a bit easier by going Episode by episode And discussing what has been added removed and changed and how feel about it if you'd like my quick summary here it is The Last of Us TV show is a phenomenal series that does Justice to the game while making it very accessible to General audiences however it falls into a strange Middle Ground where every time it attempts to use word for word The Source material it falls a bit flat not reaching the same strong moments of the original but the additional content the things added in lieu of a game to play are extremely welcome and make for a more fleshed out if a little bit disjointed experience overall it's very good I would recommend it and I would argue that if you have not seen it it is worth stopping this video and watching it for yourself but its faults are too specific to cast a blanket over hence the episode by episode breakdown your spoiler warning is over the clickers are coming so let's get into episode one [Music] all right foreign [Music] there are two episodes that I was the most worried about the first and the final I will say clearly I was sweating watching the first one because I had the lovely experience of watching The Last of Us with my mom and dad who knew nothing about the game whatsoever so I had hands clasped together head down and a smile on my lips preparing for the inevitable and to my surprise the inevitable came quite slowly the intro to The Last of Us in both pieces of media starts pre-apocalypse Joel is a younger man currently at odds with work and is a single father to his daughter Sarah the whole opening is to build a bit of rapport with Joel and Sarah it's clear they're on hard times right now but the bond the two share is excellent luckily we already have an example of how the additional content really strengthens the show The Apocalypse is drawn out to a really long degree in episode 1 and opens with a completely out of the blue Talk Show interview this really caught me off guard because the intro to the game is not drawn not at all it just starts it's a type of cinematography that's present throughout the game where scenes will just hard cut often it's a cut to Black after something horrific or emotional but it also opens with a hard cut it's the two main credits over a black screen immediately to a sleeping Sarah on the couch with the sound of a clock ticking overlaying all of it it's very effective at putting you off balance the clock in particular because it's a pretty classic case of the Hitchcock Time Bomb metaphor we know this is an apocalypse game and we can hear that time bomb clicking in a literal sense the interview on viral pandemics has a kind of a similar feel this is also when I remember that this was done by the gentleman who did Chernobyl and is also on HBO because the cinematography of the scene is is just fantastic I enjoy the nonchalanteness of the interview and then as the conversation moves to the idea of fungi taking over the brain it gets much quieter the camera angles are zoomed in the audience is stoned still and it creates the same time bomb feeling of the game in a totally different way this was my first indication that we might be in for something really good these additional scenes continue to add a lot to the material and interestingly enough even with all the gameplay in the show takes twice as long to end the intro than the game does takes about half an hour for our time cut in the show and it only is around 15 minutes with gameplay in the game but this is not a complaint all of this extra stuff is wonderful Sarah goes to school goes to the shop checks in on the neighbors they stretch this tension to its absolute limit because you know it's an apocalypse show and you don't have to have a Keen Eye to see that this girl is not on the cover the first encounter with the infected in the show involves an older woman Sarah checked up on earlier equipped with a startingly good camera tension Builder as the woman goes a bit jiggly I will say that I like that it's set up but I do prefer the first interaction the game just because it makes you feel a bit more vulnerable and it feels a bit more natural in game you control Sarah for a short time and Joel runs in the House suddenly obviously in a panic before we see our first infected it's the Coopers something right with them kind of sick Jimmy come here come here Jimmy Jimmy [Applause] I am warning you you shot him Sarah that's on this morning there was something bad going on I think it's a bit more effective because it's less actiony it makes you feel vulnerable both because you're a helpless kid in game controlling said helpless kid but also it's an intrusion on your home that you were just exploring two minutes ago however the entire truck section is ripped almost purely from the game you can look around as Sarah the entire time passing the burned Farm entering the city this whole segment keeps a similar camera angle and it's just one of those great situations where the game and show can both use the same idea to Great Effectiveness real quick I do want to talk a little bit about references because I think that this adaptation might have the best references I have ever seen I'm giving it a lot of Praise but so when you reference something there are a few ways to go about it one is full on Deadpool where you're just pure reference and pop culture humor two is little one-liners and quips to Prior stuff nudges to the audience that are in themselves a joke you'd think most Marvel films the third aren't small Easter eggs present in the background and finally we have links to the audience that people who don't get the wink won't even realize there was a wink to begin with Easter eggs can fall under this category as well but but this one's a bit more direct that final one makes up an abundance of this Show's references and they are handled in such a way that I have to applaud throughout the series I would smile or do a little when these would show up but my parents wouldn't have a clue that it had occurred case in point in the game you are crashed into by another car and that's what ends this segment gameplay swaps to jolt and you begin to carry Sarah throughout the city in the show you're driving through and a car almost hits you but Slams on the brakes then a plane crashes and that crashes your car an uninformed viewer just sees that car as part of the chaos but it gave me a good chuckle when it happened this is a constant in the show and I will point out the ones I remember the most on another note all right the extra looks pretty good all zombied up there now my friend you wouldn't want to lose your rent money in Los Angeles would you so put on a good show for us yeah and you go I feel like I should have more to say on the upcoming part than I do it's iconic in the Video Game World Sarah's death does a ton for the story of course but it did even more for the game at the time naughty dog made the Uncharted series before this an Indiana Jones supermodel surrogate get us a vote and now they gunned down a young girl in the first half hour of their next game it's not quick or quiet either it holds on her crying and whimpering never panning away and it just goes on and on it's an analog for what you're in for it's saying hey this is not going to hold back it's going to be violent cruel dark and depressing so you know prepare for that I do think the game hits the title card A Little Bit Stronger The Last of Us intro plays right after the interview in the show but in game we don't get the title card until right after Sarah's death hard cutting to Black and then going into the main credits I think that solidifies the what you're in for a bit better because they literally give you the title directly after seeing something so horrific now I know I've rambled for a good portion of the video on this intro but as I said it was one of the two main things it needed to get right and we are on the right track the rest of the episode does a few things we get our test introduction Robert plotline an initial setup to smuggle Ellie out of Boston this is also the best time to show off the biggest strength the show has backstory and additional context in game we get the 20 years later card and we go straight to Joel waking up to Tess after she got busted up by Robert's guides you go out to find them get World building in the City Firefly bombing little detour involving some infective then through Robert's area a bunch of combat tutorials teaching you how to shoot a gun take cover Etc you persuade Robert then you meet Marlene and get Ellie in the show you get a staggeringly large amount of extra setup for everything you get a ton more on Life In The Zone ration cards the jobs Joel has to do fedger versus the fireflies is fleshed out a bit more fedra is also shown as being a much more totalitarian group something that we didn't see much of in the game we have a conversation between Joel and a guard showing his Shady dealings and we even get the part where Tess gets in her scuffle with Robert and his men we get Marlene dealing with Ellie and her infection a side plot where Joel is trying to find out what happened to Tommy something that didn't occur in the game either and then Tess walks in the door it's crazy how much you can add when you don't we're gonna have a game to play all of it I should make clear is welcome for someone who already played the game it gives some great additional content and for those who haven't it's still done well there's always that fear that when you divert from The Source material it may end up not being as good but here it's all of equal caliber Tess is played by Anna Torv and serves as our game's first seasonal character she's a hard woman who seems to call most of the shots with Joel acting as her muscle the test was always a bit of a grimy character morally yes but also physically in the original she was always a bit too pretty for her situation and age and the game's remake which you see the majority of in the background footage they definitely do a good job at making her look more her age and a bit dirtier but I adore the show's version of Tess has not only is the character perfectly nailed but she looks beat to [ __ ] she is so destroyed and honestly I feel like Pedro Pascal is the one who looks a little too pretty which is a feat because anatorev in real life is what we would call um very good looking so another point in her book there's also a point where they go heavily away from the source material which is the fungi spores so in game there are spores that are released by The Infected when they die and breathing in these spores will no doubt turn a person rather fast in the show they did away with that any number of reasons could be why however in place of it they created this sort of fungus hive my network between infected a proximity of Lauren that when stepped on or bumped into will call The Horde to you there are no real consequences of this and it's only used a few times but it's still something I would like to note my theory is that the constant use of gas masks in the game would be a problem for shooting the actors regardless after our little tuffle with Robert that is a stupid idea we meet Marlene and are introduced to Ellie her entrance is roughly the same however I do find the show version to be superior [ __ ] away from it let her go I'm glad we're still down for hitting kids we're gonna need that for season two so let's talk a little bit about Ellie Ellie is played by Bella Ramsey and apparently she has gone by many pronouns in the past but often interviews she uses she her to make things simpler for people since I'm discussing them and Ellie simultaneously I'll do the same to avoid some confusion just wanted to note that Ellie is a massive back talker and loudmouth she swears constantly loves to be a pain in the ass and has a young go-getter attitude despite her age this is an attitude that's often easier to show off in game because of the factors that go into making a video game in the beginning I wasn't sure how I felt about Bella's portrayal of Ellie back talking check [ __ ] you loudmouth hmm check give us a minute all right what the [ __ ] but in a funny way I think it was just me not being used to someone else filling Ashley Johnson's shoes I played the first game probably over 10 times so it really is something that maybe is a me problem stuck in my brain but what really sold it was actually the dialogue that wasn't from the game it was written very well and the delivery from Bella got better and better with each episode with a particular emphasis on the Left Behind one it took a few episodes to get used to but when she wasn't saying Ellie's lines verbatim from the game it was quite nice and refreshing seeing her take speaking of verbatim lines that is arguably my biggest gripe with the show but it's a gripe that could be entirely my own fault still I will gripe nonetheless this is my channel when the show says lines exactly from the game they almost always don't hit the same now this could be my own fault as I stated because I'm just used to the game at this point but there is a fluctuation of quality these lines go through like take for example the kill in time interaction killing time what am I supposed to do I'm sure you'll figure that out foreign what are you doing killing time whoa what am I supposed to do I'm sure you will figure that out for me the game one felt a bit more natural a bit more seamless and the show One felt a lot faster and didn't feel like it was paced as well now a side-by-side comparison is something that might be a little unfair because it doesn't factor in Prior context in the game Tess grabs Ellie's hand with the knife there's a little bit of arguing and stuff and then it happens but in the show Ellie is slammed against the wall had a gun pointed at her had Joel step on her knife which is very important to her and then we have the discussion so a snippier faster interaction might be justified for the context itself still that being said I do think if we're looking at the two of them in a vacuum the games part did it a little bit better and I would also argue that most of the identical lines barring a few is a little bit stronger in the game in a vacuum though the show does make up for this and more with all the additional content anyway I've spent far too much time in the first episode so let's wrap this up they smuggle Ellie out of the zone and are confronted with a soldier that was set up early clear Joel has a flashback to the scenario with Sarah and probably gives him the old one two three four five six the reveal that Ellie is infected occurs some back and forth on the three weeks old thing and they promptly book it ending episode one with the 80s on the radio episode one is definitely the one I have the most talk about but it is the one that requires the most detail and hey so far we're off to a great start [Music] episode 2 continues the trend of additional scenes and perspectives by giving us an extremely early part of the infection in Indonesia because it's a bit more behind the scenes of the infection itself from a more medical perspective that we never got in the game and it also solidifies the Panic that occurred in the those who knew what would happen now in the game this is where the well game kicks into high gear unlike just getting away from Federal in the show you are there to fight them for a period of time then when you make your Escape you need to climb through the Fallen skyscrapers which makes for a great level with all the shifting objects so there actually isn't really a lot of time to interrogate Ellie about her issue because this all happens in the same night there's a bit of back and forth after the soldiers but not much this is one thing the show I think did a lot better they camp in a broken shop and get the Lovely interrogation scene obviously watching her all night waiting for her to turn it's much more methodical and intelligent what you'd expect from these two having survived here for 20 years it's also where I began to really appreciate Bella's version of Ellie there's not gonna be anything bad in here just you oh funny it's a good addition because really I think Joel and Tess glossed over it a bit too quick in the game it was due to time and Circumstance of course but even so it's been 20 years and any bite would probably be met with a swift Bullet to the Head an interrogation does a lot and it sets up a dynamic between Joel and Ellie because well as we both know Joel is kind of an [ __ ] also just can we talk about the set design of this show the sets are unfair they often beat out the video game the video game that is made entirely with computers I'm aware much of it obviously Skyline and buildings are done with CGI but a ton I just can't quite tell this extends to the cinematography as well there's a great shot of Ellie and Joel talking from two sides of a hallway while Tess is out the walls they both are on give a good bit of symbolism that while I'm not 100 sure how to interpret it it reminds me a little bit of the Goodwill Hunting scene Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are talking about the future and Ben Affleck's background as the trailer kind of closed in and darker well Matt Damon has a big blue sky you know wide open possibilities Joel has his back to green wallpaper that is mostly ripped apart revealing the cement wall beneath Ellie has her back to is still destroyed but mostly intact section of that same wallpaper now could this be a motion Joel is hardened by the world Ellie is Young and fresh of mind could be the Innocence remaining could be will to live lots of options but hers is bright is his dull accurate for this part of the story but on the point of set design the museum firstly the horror of the outer walls wow says they're going into this Hive mine type thing with the tendrils of the infected spreading all around it oh it looks just phenomenal the entire Ascent of the museum stays at this level of quality and they stretch the tension out to its limit the stairway of bodies the dead man ripped apart by the infected and the looming presence of the clicker clickers of course are a staple enemy of The Last of Us a blind infected with great hearing that is Leaps and Bounds stronger tougher and more dangerous than a normal infectant in the game we have actually been fighting these for quite a bit now they're revealed rather nonchalant in the skyscraper section damn it Clicker jeez what's wrong with his face however here they set up the clicker a bit in a discussion as they were walking along the road and teased the concept further and further genuine fear in Tess's face when they see the soldier and the mountain of bodies on the stairs Joel pans over it's a great horror section that needs no jump scares to be successful why would you even need a jump scare when you have this foreign [Music] I swear this [ __ ] sound sends me into a fight or flight even a decade later they don't even show you the thing complete opposite and better than the game these enemies just arrive and you need to take them on but clickers of course respond to sounds that could be footsteps gunfire melee and so on but if a clicker touches you it's game over they are an instant death not to mention being far tougher to kill so this setup brilliant faithful to the source material both in story and even in gameplay and then you finally see the damn thing and it still takes them a whole action scene to kill only two plus they look perfect makeup on point I could not be happier with how this was handled 10 out of 10 gold star a plus you did it I'm proud of ya but while that was great I'm iffy on how we are dealing with Tess her portrayal of Tess is still stellar and she does great Justice to the character but I find her send off not as good there's a decent amount more discussion after we find out about her bite and it's good calling back to the sort of relationship the two have in the game there was never a relationship expressed in basically any way a hint sure but nothing more than that Tess has Joel take Ellie to Bill and Frank's as her final dying wish that's what was said later on in his justification for it game tests just guilt-trips him into it you've got to get this girl this girl no no that was your Crusade I am not doing that yes you are look there's enough here that you have to feel some sort of obligation to me so you get her to Tommy's I kind of prefer this because it sticks with a theme that these are not good people Joel doesn't do this because it's her final wish or because it's right and she doesn't even bring up those possibilities she just guilts him into it I like that it just feels grimier which is right for the characters her actual death has me in two mindsets in-game fedra shows up Joe and Ellie Bale she kills about four of them before being shot and dying off screen it's very anti-climactic but also more realistic show version has The Horde called which does give her the chance to go out in a figurative and literal Blaze of Glory but not after a quite bizarre sequence where an infected makes out with her kisses her see if this was some kind of setup for a later situation like I originally thought it was I wouldn't see it as so strange but it's never brought up again nor called back to nor did it set anything up it's a bit weird and definitely kind of a gross out moment but it doesn't bug me as much as just not understanding why I simply don't get it and I don't know why it was added in it does not serve any real purpose at all but you know at least doesn't last [Music] episode three oh boy episode 3 unsurprisingly takes the largest departure from the game this is the bill and Frank episode and it's a very good episode with very genuine criticisms the bulk of this one revolves around Bill played by Nick Offerman of parks and rec Fair bill is a prepper and conspiracy theorists he is your typical doomsday man equipped with a million cameras a million guns and a million crazy ideas he also enjoys being alone so he is quite suited for the apocalypse and literally creates a massive compound for himself living life probably not that much different than pre-end of the world Bill wood during his Lonesome a man comes along named Frank Frank is played by Murray Murray Bartlett and is absolutely way too good looking at this point of the Apocalypse not a criticism just God damn Frank and Bill spark up a relationship together and that gave me a reminder that this is on HBO just gonna cross off watch Nick Offerman get sucked off from that bucket list of mine Bill and Frank Joel and Tess they argue a bit they enjoy some strawberries and overall live a long life Frank Falls ill can't really move much anymore and they go out in a quite tear-jerking suicide pact so to speak Joel and Ellie arrive take his truck and a ton of gear and get on their way I explained this episode in its entirety because absolutely none of this happens in the game in game bill is our next seasonal character and we go into Bill's Town Bill's town is covered head to toe in traps one we get caught by and have an upside down combat section the thing about game bill is that he shares the same adjectives as showbill paranoid angry anxious but a lot of that is expressed more in the game and far more immediately ah Ellie what are you doing get on your knees just calm down a second turn around all right jet on your knees don't test me just take it easy goodie bites oh anything sprouting God damn it I'm clean I see so much [ __ ] you're done am I done you come into my house you set off all my traps you damn near break my shooting arm who the [ __ ] is this Punk and what's she doing here definitely a bit of a difference here yeah at least Ellie's the same huh yeah sure Joe go ahead take my cards take all my food too while you're at it by the looks of it you could lose some of that food listen to me you little [ __ ] [ __ ] you I need you to shut up so instead of a love story between Bill and Frank we have looking for car parts with Bill because of course it's a game now you might wonder where Frank is but he's hanging around just give it a minute now I love Nick Offerman he's a very talented actor but I think Frank steals the show quite a lot his energy overall personality is just quite fun to watch it keeps my mind off the silly nitpicks like you're telling me Bill is a prepper and he doesn't even have good Trigger Discipline come on man you have 101 guns but couldn't read 101 gun tips for dummies it's right on the trigger like come on man that said I prefer game bill by a good margin Frank stealing the show gave Bill not a lot of time to have dialogue Nick Offerman doesn't say much in the episode overall and it misses out on a lot of the good dialogue that happens in the game now I'm aware it doesn't fully translate but Bill was my favorite character in the original game I loved his section I loved his dialogue and he and Ellie clashing was just hilarious but let me tell you a story Once Upon a Time I had somebody that I cared about the partner somebody I had to look after and in this world that sort of shit's good for one thing getting you killed so you know what it did wasn't the [ __ ] up and I realized it's got to be just me ability it ain't like that it's [ __ ] it is just like that hey what I said to you we walked down the steps what'd I say I'm just fixing your stupid pile don't touch God damn it I think what is going to make or break episode 3 is how much you care about its place in the overall show see I think it's a great episode in a vacuum the acting is amazing the script is excellent even the jokes that I thought wouldn't land ended up Landing you live in a psycho bunker where 911 was an inside job and and the government are all Nazis the government are all well yeah now but not then it's just a sweet love story that ends on a sad but also kinda happy note they weren't ripped apart by clickers or shot down by Raiders they lived a long time together and went out on their own terms but in the overarching plot it's a pretty massive detour it's an entire episode dedicated to the people who left Joel a car which doesn't give it a whole lot of cohesion see discourse on the internet has gotten so binary there's no such thing as gray anymore you have to like dislike love or hate but that's not how real opinions are I think it's a great episode that I'll probably skip if I re-watch the series because it's not needed for the overarching plot I think it's perfectly Fair criticism to both enjoy the episode and not like that it's a detour you are allowed to think both things but getting back on track the true enjoyment of this episode is explaining that those who haven't played the game got the Hat happy ending the suicide pact was the good ending in game you do some combat Bill often mutters to himself because he's bill you enter a school and you get your first bloater boss fight all that away for a moment you get away you have this scene Bill somebody had the same idea they stole my [ __ ] well then what the hell is Plan B you ought to be thankful you're still drawing breath that was plan A B C all the way to [ __ ] Z and furthermore tell Tess that she could take off it right I have nothing to do it what do you know this guy or something Frank Who the hell's Frank he was my partner he's the only idiot that would wear a shirt like that [Music] he's got bites here and yeah so Bill and Frank got into an argument or something off screen Frank left stole his battery got bit and hung himself I thought we are going to be going into this Direction when they were arguing in the show like oh here's the argument but we ended up not I really like this reveal you saw Bill alluding to his partner earlier but initially you kind of assumed that it's just a you know regular partner that he fights the zombies with you don't realize he's referring to a romantic part it's effective because you can see on his face a good bit of emotion when he finds Frank hanging and it's the only emotion he's really expressed other than anger it has you completely recontextualize this situation it's one of those things that kind of Nod at the back of my brain a little bit when the show came out and people were like why'd they make Bill gay what exactly was in your mind when he was tearing up talking about his partner like oh Bill's partner wow bill was a cowboy the reveal is obviously very depressing but I like a lot it recontextualized what he meant by the whole thing it shows the first amount of actual emotion in bill that isn't just anger and it's just very solid now I do like the game version more probably because I just like dark and depressing stuff and if you thought it couldn't get any more depressing than this um Frank left a note well bill I doubt you'd ever find this note because you were too scared to ever make it to this part of the town but if for some reason you didn't I want you to know that I hated your guts I grew tired of this shitty town and if you're set in your ways attitude I wanted more from life than this and you could never get that and that stupid battery you kept moaning about I got it but I guess you were right trying to leave this town will kill me still better than spending another day with you good luck Frank [Music] you got the happy ending so I will say I do like the bill section in the game more I'm biased obviously but I like the amount of angry build dialogue we get he's a great character and he has a real depressing end but I like that stuff you end up getting the truck by push starting it and Bill's seasonal character comes to a close we Square we're Square and get the [ __ ] out of my town I actually expected him to die originally bill just kind of goes off and does his own thing his section is over he's never seen from or heard from again not in the second game either which I also like because it feels realistic sometimes you just go on your way though the note in the show is a nice touch there are only two final things I'd like to leave on nitpicks if you will when they were being attacked by the Raiders and Frank Runs Out bill is just in the middle of the street I know why because he looks cool silhouetted against the fire but come on why is he in the middle of the street and not taking cover and two Bill and Frank die with the window open because of the smell but Frank can't go up and down the stairs and there's a shot of him being taken past the stairs to the room but when the episode ends there's a camera zoom out through an open window specifically calling to that statement but the window is on the second floor the floor Frank can't get up so while it's not exactly shown that this is the room it's implied but it's on the wrong floor it's not the biggest of deals but stands out when so much else of the show has been done flawlessly because it really does seem like an oversight most people I spoke to also noticed uh hold on there brickmeister you're a dumbass editor told me that he's got one last gripe that's uh really grinding his gears and to be fair they're a grimy mine too at the start of the episode Joel and Ellie head into a Cumberland Farms gas station now I got no problem with the zombie in the basement it's understandable he's just a victim of circumstance but let me be clear there's no way in hell that any companies would have a Mortal Kombat 2 machine totally unrealistic took me and Michelle right out of the episode swear I would have gotten laid if she wasn't so pissed at that [ __ ] all night and come on no Gumby's Chill Zone Neil gotta say I'm disappointed in you uh the very backlash with the picosaurus [ __ ] slaps by the way but uh you wouldn't know anything about that would you Neil but you know I wouldn't be a bill fan if I didn't obsess over the tiny annoying details [Music] episode 4 is the one I have the least to discuss and it's the reason I'm going to discuss it last for this video originally this was all to be one video and I think you can understand why that didn't work out this one covers the Ambush and entering of the main city filled with Raiders in game it's also where you initially fight any kind of outside group before all of this though you have your truck driving scene which encapsulates all of my thoughts on the show thought one Bella does a really good job as Ellie just really channels her well and is getting better and better Cheyenne Shaq really Cheyenne Laramie Casper what's his name whose name your brother call me younger older younger why isn't he with you long story is it longer than 25 hours because I think that's what we got two identical game dialogue still doesn't hit quite as hard but this might be the best time where it gets about equal the whole gay porno mag thing is about as good in both game and show so I know that it's not always worse just because me they can still do it well it's just not always pretty great scene though and three the extra discussion and content added really improved the show camping in the woods Bill's character discussions on people is a good setup and the set design again is still Top Notch the gas station in particular looks like it could be a painter it also segues to talk a bit more about Joel in the show there are future examples in the next video I can use to reinforce this but Pedro Pascal as Joel either through his acting or the writing has made him to be much softer than his video game counterpart he's still a Stern angry man but there isn't the same level of Rage that is present in the game now Pedro your Pascal is the internet sweetheart right now I recently watched him in the unbearable weight of massive Talent with Nicholas Cage which is where that Meme of the two of them looking at each other is from for context they're on LSD he's actually a surprisingly good comedic actor I'd only seen him in a few projects but when they want him to be funny he does a damn good job [Music] [Laughter] though Joel chop Joel that is is not quite as much of a bad person as game jolins his rage and anger is replaced with a blank expression a hard outer shell for context the whole post Ambush scene has Joel shooting a few Raiders and then stabbing a young man after he got shot by Ellie now it was a bit rough mainly hearing the young man screaming and stuff but there was a deliberation on the stabbing of the man a bit attention to it in an attempt to show us that damn Joel can be real brutal when he needs to be but determining on how to deal with him all that kind of setup comparing that to game Joel moving forward you had the how did you know about the Ambush part Pedro Joel tries to justify it rather quickly talking about doing what they needed to survive and that they all did it game Joel on the other hand you know no wood about the ambush I've been on both sides oh so uh you kill a lot of innocent people I'll take that as a yes take it however you want it's not a statement of it's what we had to do it's yeah I did that not proud of it but I did it to go back an episode when Joel asks bill for a car he doesn't trade or convince him he practically threatens him whatever favors you think I owe you ain't worth that much actually bill they are well it don't matter because I don't have a car that works it does feel like for the show they wanted to soften him up a little bit make a little more of that I did bad things because I had to as opposed to I am a bad person game Joel is a bad person Survivor or not and he's played with a lot more anger which I think is a bit better because his transformation at the end of the game is a more significant change seeing angry murderous Joel become a softy is a much larger path to tread but a more satisfying one that being said you could shock this up to preference it's also hard because often the one you like more is the one you saw first but there is a genuine difference in his character and that continues with Sam and Henry and especially with Tommy for a good majority of the rest of the episode it's spent setting up the Raiders in game we didn't have any setup these were just Raiders no leader no motives no name just enemies now we have Kathleen leader of this group that is overthrown Phedra the the morality of this whole thing is is a bit iffy fedra or totalitarian fascist [ __ ] but I wouldn't say public hangings and other more egregious demonstrations are that great either I think the show wanted you to see both as a problem but still understand the motives oh yeah uh speaking of Tommy check them out that's another point for the best kind of reference Tommy's VA in game is a character he's not in it much but he does well and nobody is any of the wiser this is also a good deal of setup for Sam and Henry who are on the run from this group in the game they are just on the run because Raiders are terrible and they want to kill you but here there is motivation and dialogue to make it more clear but that really ends the episode they make their way up skyscraper said a little thing and are confronted by Sam and Henry when they wake up guns pointing at them which is another example of them writing a little bit more of a softer jolt because and this may be an Abrupt ending but this is part one of two check out the merch the way Joel meets Sam and Henry in game is um one more point for angry Joel enjoy it and uh I'll see you in a week or so look leave him alone oh easy son just take it easy it's all right they're not the bad guys lower the gun wow man you hit hard and well I was trying to kill you [Music] foreign
