what's up guys it's chris majestic and after using a laser tv in my living room for the past three months i wanted to answer the question of whether or not an ultra short throw projector can actually be good enough to replace a tv [Music] this portion of today's video is sponsored by nordvpn now this probably isn't the first time you've heard of a vpn but if you don't know a vpn or virtual private network allows you to secure your internet data by encrypting it hiding your ip address and routing your traffic through a secure server this prevents nosy people from snooping on your activities so you can use the internet freely and securely i've been using nordvpn for about two years now and it's been great for me it's super fast they have over 5000 servers worldwide they don't track or collect your data and it works on all different types of devices not to mention you can also use nordvpn to browse and access resources that are only available in another country and if you do sign up using the link in the video description or by using the coupon code chris majestic you'll get 73 off the two-year plan and you'll get one month free that works out to just over three bucks a month which is a fantastic deal so if you're interested make sure you use the link in the video description or use the coupon code chris majestic to get your discount and i want to thank nordvpn for sponsoring this portion of today's video so for the past three months or so i've been testing out multiple laser tvs in my living room and i figured i'd do a quick video to give you guys my honest opinion on using an ultra short throw projector in place of a tv now i'll tell you right off the bat that the quick answer is yes even though i'll admit it's not for everyone so as some of you know i have a 135 inch screen in my home theater well as much as i love it i rarely have time to go down there so i spend most of my time on the main floor of my house so back in august i had a 75 inch samsung tv in my living room well after being intrigued with all these new laser tvs popping up i figured it might be worth rearranging the room to see if i could switch over so i've been daily driving laser tvs from benq samsung high sets and a few others and ended up landing on the high sense l9g which is easily one of the best so now that i've spent a few months using a laser tv on a regular basis in my living room i want to go over the benefits and then i'll talk about some of the limitations alright so let's start with the obvious first benefit and that size the whole point of getting a laser tv is that you can project a huge image anywhere from 100 to 150 inches depending on the projector and spend much less than you would spend on a big tv watching a movie on a big bright screen is something that worst can't describe and having a huge screen in your living room just makes you want to watch tv for no reason not to mention how awesome it is to game on one of these things now i know some of you are probably going to mention 85 or 86 inch tvs but that 14 or 15 inches really does make a big difference i mean you wouldn't want to take a 40 inch tv over a 55 inch a screen this bright and this big is something you really have to see in person to appreciate no videos or pictures can do it justice it really does look amazing and this brings us to the next benefit which is cost now to be honest laser tvs aren't cheap but they're definitely much cheaper than the tv of the same size so let's use the hysis for example so the highsense l9g retails for 5500 and comes with a 100 inch screen the cheapest 100 inch tv i could find from a reputable brand is this 100 inch sony which cost 20 thousand dollars you can almost buy four of these high sense laser tvs for that much and we're not even going to go into sizes over 100 inches because you can literally buy a nice luxury car for that kind of money now again fifty five hundred dollars isn't cheap but there are some cheaper options out there like the original vava the benq v7050i or the hisense l5 now considering how pretty much all of the major brands are starting to produce laser tvs i do think the competition is really going to drop the prices down over the next year or so another benefit i want to talk about is portability so you can grab a laser projector pointed at a wall and have a huge tv in just seconds imagine taking a 85 inch tv off your wall to use it at a friend's house it's just not gonna happen now to be fair it does look much better on an actual screen but as long as you're in a dark room it'll look great on any flat surface even if the wall isn't white and the last benefit is sound quality now as most of you know the speakers that are built into most tvs sound absolutely horrible well with laser tvs you actually get a nice set of speakers built into the front which is perfect for watching tv or the occasional movie they do sound significantly better than tv speakers but they're no match for a mid-range sound bar or home theater speakers so i do still recommend separate speakers especially if you plan on watching a lot of movies alright so we've gone over the benefits but what are some of the downsides to buying a laser tv well the first and most popular limitation to any projector is that they don't look good outdoors or in a really bright room and unfortunately even with laser tvs being super bright this is still the case this is simply a limitation of bouncing light off of a screen versus a backlight facing directly towards you now don't get me wrong a bright laser tv mixed with a good ambient light rejecting screen definitely works in some rooms even if it has a lot of windows but you just have to understand that it just won't look nearly as good as it does in a dark room the next downside to buying a laser tv is contrast and black levels so out of all of the laser tvs that i've tested the samsung and the high sense were the best now even though they look fantastic when they're in a light controlled room neither of them look as good as an oled tv so over the past few years oled has sort of become the gold standard when it comes to image quality while the black levels contrast and colors look good from a laser tv but when you compare it to even an entry level oled like the lg c1 it simply can't compete now to put this into perspective the high sense goes for about 5 500 and the 83 inch lg c1 retails for the same price now i think that some people could make a compelling argument that the benefits of oled are better than the extra 17 inches from a laser tv but i personally would take the bigger screen another downside with laser tvs is throw ratio in space now this doesn't necessarily apply to all laser tvs but it is something to look out for some laser tvs have to sit several inches away from the screen which might require you to pull your tv stand away from the wall losing valuable space in your room now this really isn't an issue with laser tvs like the samsung lsp9t or the lg 8285 la since they both sit really close to the screen but projectors like the high sense epson and several others need a good amount of space compare that to pretty much any tv that you can mount on the wall and it's pretty clear that the tv requires much less space not to mention having your tv hanging up on the wall frees up your tv stand to hold the sound bar or speakers which might require a bit of creativity if you have a laser tv since it might be in the way and the last thing i want to talk about is gaming so even though gaming on a big screen is absolutely amazing there is one major limitation with some laser tvs and that's input lag considering you can easily get input lag numbers in the single digits from modern tvs you'd be lucky to see less than 20 or 30 milliseconds from a laser tv now if you're a casual gamer like me then this will be just fine but if you're a competitive gamer that plays a lot of shooters or games that require fast reaction times then the tv will probably work better for you now with that being said even though i do have a 4k 43 inch gaming monitor i still find that i prefer playing games on the laser tv there's just something about the immersion you get from playing a game on such a big screen so to sum things up laser tvs are awesome but they're definitely not for everyone the biggest issue is the first one that i mentioned which is ambient light considering i have mine in the living room with several windows my wife has mentioned that the image didn't look good when it was really bright outside no matter which projector i used now as long as you understand the limitations and you're looking for the biggest screen you can get for the money then i definitely think a laser tv is worth it but if you care more about contrast black levels and competitive gaming then a traditional tv might be better for you but that's gonna pretty much do it for this video guys hopefully you found it helpful if you did go ahead and make sure you mash that like button for me and i want to know your thoughts on this especially if you own a laser tv so make sure you leave your comments in the comment section thanks for watching guys and i'll see you in the next video
