[Applause] by the way they call the time I PC you know I'm beginning and I said I know I'm gonna be waiting and the time out I'm gonna play and I've had this for my run all right then she got the ball you go over here and I have to Kevin in the corner and not would you come over then about that time Larry steps hands as a coach up when she destiny ball and tell about get out the way no after the time I'll be busy wrapped up on the court Mary's going down to the physician so he tell the baby isn't I'm getting involved and his time we get it right here i machine ran in your face [Applause] you know he was like I didn't need to leave two seconds on the clock Paul Peck Tillis a lot like hey [Music] the spreadable defensively let's see if they whine tomorrow [Music] [Applause] bird down low hits the ball behind the drive for the block if you put all of us in a room you know magic Jordan myself and Burt Burt probably be the guy who walks out of the room at the end of the day [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and over time 23 bird rotates in turn pops out a voice and a DJ goes back in the earth all the way of God by God by God [Music] I remember we were playing Washington in Washington one night and Larry just hit what would have been the game when Shaq Casey called timeout Larry came back to the bench you know he was little upset he looks at the bench and says hey guys when I come back after timeout I'm gonna go right to the same spot I'm gonna kick it in he told Washington I'm gonna get the ball [Applause] how many people you know but talk to the other team like this says I'm gonna stick it in me [Music] let it go now this garden in my rookie year he looks at me and he goes you can't stop me that look good and I said gosh boy you're just so confident gets confident you're a rookie you don't know anything keep proceeded to score like ten straight points on it coach tricked me out the game he walks by and he's laughing at me Larry Bird catches the ball in the corner I take off running out at Larry Bird and right when he's getting ready to shoot I jump and as I go by I go by he tells me says fly bird and I go right by him he shoots pause nothing but nylon a library was a pain in the neck any time we had a chance to win Larry Bird changed that there was a certain confidence you had because you know if you ever got in trouble give the ball to Larry get out of his way and he delivered [Applause] he was a cold-blooded killer but when you played against somebody do you remember well you had the bird night he only scored six on me nobody was guarding bird were they well we're trying were trying but when the guy is literally coming up the court calling his shots and you know bird talked a lot of trash and that's in New Orleans that's in New Orleans in that game were on the free-throw line and he's like he literally says left side that's that's a tough filling but okay so you guys got Antoine Carr and cliff Levingston got fine by fratello I think and Eddie Johnson for celebrating celebrating bird yeah it was the best film session everybody when I see Mike we still laugh it was the greatest film session ever because that's back then you didn't have you know you watched the real game and just went you know what a video and Mike rewound the celebration 20 times they just kept routing that to shot he just kept rewinding it showing the guys you remember they're giving each other high-fives and then somebody falls off the bench and Lady Johnson Johnson falls off the bench and laughter and Antoine Carr and cliff gives each other high-five and our film session is 20 minutes of that it wasn't somebody not playing good defensive bird it was celebrating Larry Bird Stella wouldn't let it go it just kept reminding me I think Berlin by the bench one time - he fell in a bit and he called that one that was the one where he fell in it he literally said off the glass into the trainer it was a bad night he was a basketball genius he'd be a step ahead I thought ahead played the game like a chess game and much where the garden Michael Jordan in live bird because you have to play the game as a thinker when you plant and you have to get inside his mind why was a quick could jump really high but there was just some sleepless nights like the five all-star game is in Dallas the first three-point contest may even starts look at it guys doesn't say award and people are getting kind of nervous then he finally speaks and says I'm just just looking to see who's gonna finish second some pure trash talking and just general bravado and the theatrics of it all was made for Larry and Larry would back up his boast by not only winning the contest but blowing away the competition with a phenomenal shooting display [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] my name one full week man I knew I was gonna win to say I've been practicing my teammate said I wasn't gonna win but I came back and looked at really at the end of one of the trips he had accomplished every goal we hadn't lost a game on the trip and Larry told all of us players and the media - we're all standing around waiting to leave he said tomorrow night's the last game of the trip I'm gonna play this one left hand and at least at least three three quarters and at the end of three quarters the next night in Portland against towards your home jersey he had 27 points will have to happen but it was a remarkable [Applause] this guy was going to do one thing almost every night that really spun your head around made you do it didn't believe this was happening [Applause] he was playing chess and everybody else was playing checkers he was three moves ahead of everybody else and you never know what he was going to do but you know was going to be something special [Music] in last year's playoffs person was out to make bird eat his words while adding a few choice comments of his own Chuck person's he definitely has his reputation during the playoffs he just went AWOL you know he just went to work Chuck and Larry down low pretty one of the ones again [Applause] the idea is to especially because I'm going Chuck for a while and who always had run-ins but it always seems like I get the last word it looked like his luck had finally run out [Music] Megan nine [Music] [Applause] drop one here quickly 14 this is a tie [Music] he knew exactly what the score was he knew that that ball was gonna win the competition for him and it's almost like he did it in dramatic fashion just to make it more fun he knew it when he let it go and was headed for the winner's circle [Music] then the game begins magic and Larry come out together two guys had saved the league they wouldn't be playing this game without those two a magic pass the ball Larry makes the first basket I mean you know it's just it just didn't get any better than that the u.s. was off and running and the result was a thing of beauty [Music] and no one seemed more excited to be sharing the court than the co-captains [Music] opening night was a smashing success but the outcome never in doubt magic I'm late in the game fans in Portland decided they wanted a curtain call from a three-time MVP the crowd start cheering there there there [Applause] reacts to the actress of Larry Bird is standing ovations and has he done so many other times in his career Larry Bird rose to the occasion [Applause] you just knew that Larry Bird was not gonna miss that shot it was a virtually flawless performance the final margin of victory was 77 points and magic converted led the way [Music] [Applause] the Larry Bird retirement ceremony they had it on a night when there was no game that's how special that's how popular that's how great Larry Bird is then he filled the Boston Garden and you couldn't get a ticket magic comes out and it was just great and you had the Celtic t-shirt on underneath and the speech that magically Larry Bird said that there will be another Larry Bird one day and Larry they will never ever ever be to have all the fans come back to pay tribute and to say thank you there was nothing like that on earth tonight my basketball career is officially over and I had a blast so night I leave I leave basketball forever I leave a game that I loved sorry but I'm gone I'm history I dedicated my life to basketball and I've dedicated my life to the boss to cellphone so I say good night Boston and may God bless each and every one of you [Music]
