Land Cruiser Revealed for 2024! - The Legend Returns - Test Drive | Everyday Driver

foreign Toyota's Land Cruiser is back in the North American market after three years the Beloved truck their beloved 4x4 is back but with a brand new model built on Toyota's tnga slash F platform the full-size platform we are here in Salt Lake City at the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum looking at the 1958 version look at this when's the last time you saw a car that had cloth seats with manual controls there's no heating there's no cooling why because this is the 1958 version that means it is the low end version of the new Land Cruiser it's still going to be over fifty thousand dollars but it solves the do I off-road my luxury vehicle because it's not a luxury vehicle anymore it is the bang around old school Land Cruiser beveled kind of styling and I like that it's clean surfaces and I like that the wheel arches really speak to what people are going to do with this they are going to customize the Daylights out of this and that is what Toyota gives its enthusiasts and this is the one you want if you want an old school feel you want to make it into your off-roader and you don't care about luxury because you're going to get it dirty which is what a Land Cruiser is supposed to be of course this is simpler you could go with steelies you could go with simpler Wheels but you're going to change the wheels anyway aren't you look at this old style Grille remember when Toyota's had this Grille on the nose of all of their trucks look at the old Land Cruisers here they all look like this that's what you're getting you're getting the one with the old school feel and the simpler feel so you can really take it and get it dirty for the luxury version that's the other one I find it pretty interesting that Toyota has decided to do both variations they're doing round headlights and they're also doing rectangular headlights because you know there's warring factions between the two parties the all the enthusiasts but the wheel arches are very interesting body on frame construction and the wheel arches make the entire vehicle proportionally look smaller even though it's still pretty big but look at this right here I didn't see this surface development until I saw it in a color this is very clean very nice you'll notice all the beveled kinds of shapes really do relate to the new tundra the new Tacoma and then this shoulder line right here does that not say Land Cruiser to you so it looks like a Land Cruiser it feels like any of the versions that you've grown up with and you can relate to but it still isn't retro and I'm seeing that more now in a color so besides the two distinctive trims with the very distinctive front ends they both maintain this Toyota Classic Grille here but of course this has the rectangular headlights it also has the leather it's probably the one that more people are going to buy it's the more luxurious one that you've come to expect from your Land Cruiser while you also want it to be a 4x4 the big news here besides the two different stylings though is actually the drivetrain under here there's no more V8 anymore that V8 that everybody loved the naturally aspirated V8 it's gone all three flavors the 1958 the Land Cruiser and the Land Cruiser first edition come with the same engine no more V8s check this out this is the 2.4 liter turbocharged Hybrid engine making 326 horsepower 465 pound-feet of torque that's half the engine if you're keeping track it also has that 448 volt hybrid system involved which means it has a little bit less horsepower 326 horsepower but 465 pound-feet of torque up from 401 that's a big torque change however the vehicle is slightly narrower at four inches narrower it's about an inch shorter and the towing capacity has gone down to six thousand pounds is that going to be an issue depends on what you're using it for if you're looking for the big three-row luxury Land Cruiser that you've come to know the closest you can get in the US is the Lexus LX this new Land Cruiser is like The Prado in other markets it's a bit smaller and in line with the recently revealed 2024 Lexus GX but the GX is launching with a non-hybrid V6 offering 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque plus an 8 000 pound towing capacity this four-cylinder only Land Cruiser has the engine we expect in the upcoming Tacoma and a return to more rugged thinking excellent news everyone the interior style matches the exterior it's clean and functional it does look good but it's not designed to be a high-end luxury SUV this really feels even with the leather it feels like Toyota wants you to take this off-road but the biggest interest to me are these wheel arches this is built on the full-size truck platform body on frame you can see it through the wheel arches but the wheel arches themselves they're going to accept much bigger wheels and tires and this says off-roading capability it also makes the entire vehicle look a lot smaller however there's a lot of space inside really good space utilization this one has got a larger screen 12.3 inches the base model 1958 only has an eight and also have you seen the hatch Sequoia struggles with its hatch this is only a five-seater and the hatch is great but the big news is the stadium seating check this out the back seat look you can see it the backseat passengers can see now little things from Toyota that is really interesting to discover this is Toyota taking the Land Cruiser Heritage and going with something simple if you can make it yours and make it off-road and then you have to worry about off-roading your luxury vehicle they have higher trims for that but most people are going to wind up in this let's be honest while the 1958 is the more affordable more bang around version this is the version you're going to see at Starbucks and all over the place and not being used as a 4x4 but it does have that Land Cruiser name still a little bit of that Land Cruiser Grill here so you've got Heritage you've got history but you've got newness it's the brand new chassis brand new engine it's a 2.4 liter four-cylinder 465 pound-feet of torque it's the torque that matters that is where you want it the old V8 had 401 pound-feet of torque and I don't think any Toyota enthusiasts are going to be sad when they get a lot better fuel economy on this one I mean Land Cruiser is almost a cult among enthusiasts who know but full-time four-wheel drive and I like that it kind of it pays homage without being retro so it feels fresh and new and I do love the round headlights but it does pay homage it does kind of bring all the enthusiasts back into the fold but the powertrain really is the big news here
