Laminated Glass Hear the Difference

I know many times when you look at what's called sound transmission classifications and the numbers that are associated with it it's still very difficult to say what does that mean to me as a homeowner well today the purpose of this field test is to show you exactly what that will do for you what we're going to do is we're gonna start up a commercial leaf blower that we have outside the window and you'll not only get to look at our decibel meter which will show the decibel rating of the sound transmission coming into the house but also you'll get to physically hear the difference between these three different types of glass first we're going to try a window with double pane and low E and argon gas what we have installed right now is double pane glass with LOI and argon gas as you can tell you can hear the leaf blower running now we've closed that window and this is pretty typical for a window with LOI and argon gas with double pane glass now we're going to install our triple pane glass [Music] this is our triple pane glass now with LOI and argon gas installed in this window now we're going to install laminate glass with LOI and Aragon gas into the opening just a brief explanation of what laminate glass is also and you may be familiar you may not but understanding that in your windshield of your car is actually laminate glass it's one sheet of glass with a plastic membrane and then another sheet of glass do you notice when a windshield gets busted out it tends to cave in it doesn't break into small pieces like tempered glass does which is what the rest of the windows in your car have so hopefully what we're going to find out today is that when you're using laminate glass and different types of materials in between the glass it actually diminishes those sound waves that are coming into your house now we've installed a window with laminate glass in this opening let's see how it's doing for us [Music] hopefully you've seen that laminate glass performs much better than double pane or even triple pane and I think well one thing that we've noticed is that with the triple pane glass versus double pane glass it doesn't make a whole lot of difference with your sound transmission but with laminate glass installed it makes a very significant difference now we're going to test what laminate glass will do to block out unwanted noise from the outside we have a little boom box that we're going to take and we're going to play just outside the window and see the significant difference that laminate glass will make in your windows [Music] I'm impressed I hope you are too laminate glass will make a difference and sound proofing your home
