Lagman House Is NYC’s Only Dungan Restaurant

[Music] lagman house is the only dungan restaurant in the united states as far as i know is [Music] but steamed dumplings fried sunshine great salads is just chives so it's an eggplant gravy we have a beef eggplant red and green peppers and add a little bit of the spicy pepper and three cups of scallion on top personal favorite dish pinch it up we get the steamed bread and we just dip the sauce when somebody try our food they might think resembles chinese central asian i can understand that but it might resemble something but it also tastes unique who originated in china in america i don't think there's a lot of dungeons maybe like 50 people where are the centers of chinese people who follow islam when the support was at its peak there's a lot of arab traders who were in china and they married chinese women and that's how dangerous people were originated we inherited our religion from our forefather customs language traditions everything else from our foremother in the late 1800s there was a conflict between cultures and to escape prosecution some of our great grandfathers had to flee the country they had to cross the border they had to travel all over the mountains a lot of them settled in kyrgyzstan a smaller group settled in kazakhstan [Music] i feel like i was living in like 1800s or something because everything is kept by the really old traditions i i didn't know internet exists until i was 13 or 14. my grandpa was born there in the same village and my dad was born there i was born there it's been like over 200 years in the same place same village there's no room for growth my dad decided that maybe we should look for some great opportunities for us for me for my brothers and sisters [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign yeah see you next time i want to help mom as much as i can she she really has it really hard she comes home really late and my granny's inside because i don't get to see her that much it's very sad but working here changed it we got to see her help her this is the last step in making the hand pulled noodles as she pulls and beats and skinnier the noodles becomes we have two types of noodles here one of the classic very simple beef and onions we got guru lagman it's more of the veggie people who like more vegetables [Music] she's been helping me for one and a half years she blew off my mind i'm good working as a family with my brothers my sisters my parents and my my fiance it feels like a unity my dad brought up the opening our own restaurant it's it was what five years ago maybe we wanted our own part of american dream [Music] names my parents had a hard time with english and i had to help them with legal stuff all the documentation licenses my mom and i every day we have 12 to 14 hour shifts yesterday visited [Music] [Music] my parents they taught me to value a family we never know what's going to happen tomorrow and you know we have to support each other i really want my my kids know who we are where we come from and what it took to be to come to america my parents really did sacrifice a lot to come here my mom was a pharmacist my dad was a successful businessman america is a great country there's some part of me left off that's from kazakhstan there's a clash of cultures in inside of me here's more about freedom about what i as a person want rather than what does society tell you to do first of all [Music] my favorite thing about working here is that you can help your family and feed others i like helping my mom a lot in the kitchen for me working at the restaurant family is like we get to spend time with each other big contribution from us from kids to our parents and to thank them for what they're doing right now for us for us for our future and for our culture to show people who we are let people know that we exist and what kind of food we have what kind of culture we have [Music] is
