governor and the education oversight chair argue during a town hall to discuss the construction delays for the home of the Sharks the CI Department of Labor is getting ready to assist the 146 HED Regency employees who will be out of a job when the hotel closes in June I'm Tomas M with full details coming up half day and good evening welcome to kuam news prime time I'm Nick Delgato and I'm Dy Cruz thank you so much for making us a part of your day well the man and woman accused in an armed kidnapping Deni the allegations filed against them in local Court 25-year-olds Noah sepa and Aza Luhan were indicted by a grand jury the pair appearing virtually before prison before Magistrate Judge Benjamin cesan where they pleaded not guilty to the charges handed down against them sepa is charged with two counts of kidnapping terrorizing and fonus restraint all with a special allegation of a deadly weapon used in a felony Luhan is charged with complicity to commit kidnapping complicity to to commit kidnapping and comp complicity to commit felonious restraint luhan's defense attorney Mark Smith plans to argue for luhan's release from prison to a third party custodian that will be heard at a later hearing the case is assigned to judge Alberto Tolentino as KU reported the couple arrested last month in a kidnapping that unfolded in Mighty the victim telling kuam he's a tattoo artist and sepa was his client who did not pay for services sepa allegedly telling him he would make payment that day when the kidnapping occurred Luhan was the alleged driver the victim was able to escape after they pulled over at a Baraga gas station but sea claims he was unarmed and allegedly told police he was there to collect a drug debt a convicted drug dealer is arrested in connection to a stabbing reported at the park across from a local elementary school in dedo Sunday night 42-year-old Joseph Pew Jr is charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault to include a special allegation of possession or use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony court documents State PE approached the teenage victims allegedly hitting one in the back of the head with a sharp object the teen was taken to the hospital for treatment a witness allegedly telling police he saw the suspect holding a rebar and a possible knife or broken glass bottle Pew also had to be treated for injury sustained after a struggle during the alleged attack a man is under arrest accused of abusing a 7-year-old 33-year-old Andrew babala charged with child abuse core documents State Bal allegedly used devel to spank the child five times as punishment the alleged victim told police he was whipped for feeding trash to an another relative which made them sick another adult reported the alleged abuse to police after noticing bruises and marks on the child's legs now to a scam alert the offices of Guam Homeland Security and civil defense along with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center continue to receive reports of local telephone numbers receiving suspicious calls and messages or reported fishing scams from local domestic and unusual or unexpected international area codes most recently reports identifi videos circulating of people claiming to be Guam residents thanking Samsung for large winnings reports include false notices from Samsung and Publishers Clearing House of winners of the prizes in exchange for large fees or payments made through money transfer non-existent Amazon orders for electronics or winners of large sums of money if you call them from your bank with information we've got a list of ways you can avoid being scammed now on kuam.com talks of delays in rebuilding a new home from the Simon Sanchez sharks were swimming in tension during a town hall meeting this week KU hearing from the committee oversight chair on education after his heated interaction with the governor made waves thank you a push to get a new Simon Sanchez campus for the Sharks drenched intention between the administration and the legislature committee chair on education Senator Chris Barnett Making a Splash with his comments during a town hall meeting on the matter at Governor Lon Guerrero and lieutenant governor Josh Torio I have to say this because I'm the kind of person who's going to say what has to be said the governor lieutenant governor have been in office for six years and we have seen no action on Simon Sanchez his remarks causing visible disagreement from the pair in response the lieutenant governor meling the words not true but his microphone was turned off you lied you lied and amid crossed arms shaking heads and inaudible rebuttals Bernett advising the student body in attendance not to let Lou and Josh quote docken them for another 10 years demanding the time for talking is over Governor lieutenant governor build Sanchez now the call to action causing students to erupt in protest [Applause] but following Barnett's comments Senator Tom fer warning students that they've been exposed to quote demagoguing which by definition is a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and Promises in order to gain power what you just heard to get you whooped up is only vaguely true don't get buffaloed you're you're high school students you're not children anymore you make up your own mind those high school students even capturing their Island leaders in a heated exchange meantime kuam reaching out to Senator Barnett and adal loop for a response on the encounter Barnett stating in part she grabed my arm to keep me from walking away I asked her not to touch me a bunch of students posted a video of that interaction and some even sent it to me it's unfortunate the governor struggles to maintain her temper when confronted with the and as of news time adalo Loop had not yet responded to ku's request for comment on the incident and other news upgrades are finally coming down the pike the request the resting place rather for our fallen heroes the Veteran Cemetery breaking ground as the chapel will undergo Renovations it's just the first phase to make the sacred grounds a place to be proud to lay our veterans to rest the first Burial at the veterans cemetery in PD was done in 1954 for 70 years the island has used these sacred grounds to lay our fallen heroes to rest 24,000 veterans are buried here but the 16 acre property is quickly running out of space government officials with the Veterans Affairs office have made plans to build upwards but even those spaces are on a 15-year timeline before they need to find land elsewhere Jose S Austine leads the local Veterans Affairs office and is a retired Marine we're not going to be doing many more underground barrial once the fouryear underground barrial is full everything else will be Crips and colum barrial he admits even maintaining the Cemetery grounds has been a struggle the only time that this property has been water blasted was when it rains you look at it so my concern was it is part part of the cemetery for many years that it's uh not been addressed it's slippery especially the Manco and people like me that are starting to get old his staff quickly pulling together to clean up all in preparation for a special event held Thursday morning it should be a place that is uh so rightfully deserving of our people and our veterans a groundbreaking ceremony with Island leaders turning the dirt for $816,000 contract to update the cemetery Chapel it's welcoming progress for veteran royan boa who is the vice chairman of the veterans commission you can base or judge a society based on how they treat their debt and this next step in renovating not only the chapel but the administration building and the maintenance building speaks a lot about who we are as a culture and who we are as a people it's just the first phase officials say of more to come in hopes that the next 70 years will mean a more meaningful and respectable final the cnmi Department of Labor helping the 146 employees transition as the hotel announced it's shutting down at the end of June Regional correspondent toas mloto reports it's sad to see high it go uh but we know that we'll be able to absorb all of the different employees they have uh and what they can do with other uh employment opportunities the nmi Department of Labor is helping the 146 Hyatt Regency sipan employees who will be out of a job at the end of June after the hotel announced its permanent closure nearly all of their employees are us qualified workers we have high hopes that every person at hayatt will be able to find new employment at the instruction of the governor Do's Workforce investment agency launched a rapid response team to connect Hotel staff to services that match their individual needs we already have plans on um creating um a information session next week as early as Monday and Tuesday to kind of provide um the uh affected employees with the resources and uh information they would need to to make uh informed decisions on where their uh next um career path would be um alongside that we will be uh uh partnering out with the uh the division of uh employment service um during this uh um initiative and we also have plans on uh uh creating a a job here just for the for these employees the Department of Labor said it met with hotel management the day after they announced their plans to close we actually do uh have awareness of different uh properties that that are seeking for employees and so being able to line them up and collaborate and be that middleman is what we are here for we're ready to stand uh and serve our community and and see what we can do to help people transition uh in this this tough change toas manga kuam news sipan the cnmi Department of Public Safety has set up a command post at suicide cliff on cpan in their efforts to find a 65-year-old man reported missing authorities are searching for Juan Solace after his car was found parked near suicide Cliff the search continued into the afternoon in the marpie area authorities say Solace was last seen on May 1st around 7:30 in the morning at his guay home he was last seen wearing a shirt black jean shorts and black slippers anyone in sien with information on his location is asked to call the DPS Central headquarters the number 670 664 92 or call 911 and in other news a warm haa day welcome has extended to passengers arriving on United airlines' new direct route early this morning we were already looking booking our flights Honda from takeoff at the Hana or hanada to touchdown in Guam mitsuki hiyama with a look at the historic inaugural flight on board a United Airlines flight early Thursday morning all 166 seats are filled passengers excited for the island flight from Hana to supplies in the L so I'm enjoying this time and for crew like pilot Captain John zies I've been gr now 13 years this is my first time being part of a flight for inauguration I was happy that I was able to do this and experience all the excitement with the people but what makes a new route so important of course from Hana is better for us because Hana airport is very close with us Chief pilot AOL Lee says it's the Hub of not just Tokyo but Japan itself obviously we want um a lot of tourists to come down and see what our Island looks like to kind of visit what we call where America's day begins um and at the same point we want some people in Guam to be able to have easier access to come up to to Tokyo and be able to take part in everything that Japan has to offer United executive Sam shinohara and Kenichi kyama expect the new route to boost tourism on both sides it's convenient for the customers uh traveling in and out of Tokyo to get to the haneda airport uh and it it is a uh a market we are excited uh to capture capturing a lagging Japan Market beginning with a memorable First Flight I the uh you know the boarding gate uh we'll have we'll hand this out uh to
