every fight when it's been going on so long that the reasons it all began are far away and ancient news when the only answer left is that's the way it's always been the way it's always been is broken it's time to open up our view let me hear my voice like i've never heard before let me see through eyes like i've just been born goodness everywhere open up my [Music] find heart everywhere there comes a time in every age when there's no choice but to change when we evolve and learn and grow and clearly see what has to be and right now the only answer is we are all made in god's image worthy of human dignity we're only free when we're all free let me hear my voice [Music] to [Music] to care find goodness [Music] everywhere [Music] may you be sealed in the book of life this year may you have an easy fast it feels easy now but it's only just begun tonight is solemn if rosh hashanah is a celebration of the world we live in and creation itself tonight is the realization that our time in that world is limited and the creation that is us is limited as well tonight is solemn because we come face to face with our humanity and begin the journey inside to see the truth of us each one of us and what we did to arrive at this very moment the good the bad all of it the moments of weakness the moments of stubbornness the moments of impatience the moments of selfishness the difficult and darkest moments that's what we're here to examine and at the same time we are here for self-compassion and love we are here to open our hearts and realize that all that darkness is a part of the light tonight we begin the work to keep that darkness from being the beacon that lights our way of the future tonight this year feels particularly solemn there is so much sickness and death in the world an uneasy feeling unrest uncertainty let's use tonight and tomorrow as a way to find our way to shuvah to return to bring us back towards us us but as we are now we take the experience of this past year and we don't ask what we feel about what happened to us but we open up our hearts and we ask how what happened made us feel and what we did with those feelings it's a deeply personal endeavor and we do it as if we were already absent from this world we do it like we're peering down from afar and we're observing ourselves and seeing the truth of us as we go through the service if you have a moxar you're going to see the page numbers in the upper right hand corner of the lower thirds and throughout this service you're going to see people singing next to each other all of that was done to a track with nobody singing and the cantor and i are far apart and have been together for six months doing these services so please sit back in your home or stand up when you're asked to and from the place where you are and the place where we are we will connect and the first way to connect is through the lighting of the candles on this yom kippur so i'm going to invite the families the beales the aments the eichensteins the goldman lurie family the greenspan azars the weisses the rendons and the stiglitz family to light the candles with us this evening the human spirit is the lamp of god searching out what lies within us guided by the flame of conscience on this sacred night we search for truth shine your light upon us as we strive to serve you may we find safety in your faithful love we light the flame of healing and forgiveness on this atonement night we give thanks for lovely [Music] me the haunting melody of cole nidre sets the tone for this day we know that in this past year we have not always opened our hearts we have not always acted in ways that we are proud of and we are aware that our actions or lack thereof often start with words we speak so this evening by asking forgiveness for our words which led to broken promises and unfulfilled commitments we ask forgiveness to make a new commitment to value our words in the year 5781 cole nidre reminds us that we start the process of being our best selves by upholding the promises we make to others and to ourselves thank you i'd like to invite one of our board members eric mulheim and lauren mulheim to come open the ark and this is that moment when we bring the torahs in and how appropriate in the corwin sanctuary that we invite the corwins david and cara and dorit and hannah and emmett to bring the torahs into this space oh [Music] [Music] [Music] please [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] my go [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] don't know [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] are you [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] me [Music] um [Music] [Music] a [Laughter] [Music] [Music] um [Music] hey [Music] hey [Music] [Applause] uh [Music] hmm [Music] ah [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the deep [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] she [Music] me [Music] me yes [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] thank you so much to the korn family and to rafael danashgar who played an absolutely beautiful violin for that colney dre give us the strength to keep our promises the sacred vows of partners in marriage the promises of love and care between parents and children the promises of duty between citizens and country the oaths of doctors the sacred trust of teachers give us the strength to keep our promises to our friends and colleagues to those who live with us and depend upon us to those who work for us and those for whom we work to those who pray with us and those for whom we pray to those we love and those we serve give us the courage to keep our promises to ourselves to one another and to future generations i'd like to invite now sela aaron and hannah corwin to sing venislav a hopeful note that we will succeed in our spiritual work over these next 25 hours is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] you bring us here your presence fills creation you keep using [Music] he [Music] [Applause] [Music] you bring us here [Music] creations [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] my [Music] we continue standing we've reached the baraku the main portion of our service tonight [Music] [Music] god [Music] you may sit if you'd like i'd like to welcome kathy and julian javore for reading day and night are yours creative spirit of the universe the muted colors of twilight the radiance of dawn yours are the spreading wings of light the deepening shadows of darkness and ever-changing drama in the human heart too the struggle between darkness and light unfolds from sunlit heights of generosity the human heart sinks to the gloomy depths of selfishness although we fall you give us the strength to rise again you call on those who hurt through word or deed to break free from wrongdoing and return to you all who hear your call to goodness are embraced all who reject emptiness and evil find acceptance from you we come into your presence this night of queenidre aware that our shortcomings and weaknesses are many yet encouraged by your promise of forgiveness we choose freely the path of repentance restoring wholeness to our lives and holiness to the world most times when we recite shema we whisper the second line quietly to ourselves but tonight we recite baruchem aloud just as the high priest did on this sacred day when the temple still stood in jerusalem [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] oh [Music] we strive to free ourselves from ourselves from the obstacles that keep us from being the best of us we know we can succeed because our people gain their freedom despite the obstacles put in front of them we celebrate that moment with me [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is we ask for strength tonight we ask for comfort we ask that a shelter of compassion cover us as we continue through the night through the hashi-venu prayer [Music] new [Music] i [Music] [Applause] a [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] i don't know [Music] at this point of our service we've prayed the words handed down to us for generations but now as we begin the amidah the central part of our prayer service we shift our focus from the words on the page to the words in our hearts this is the moment for each of us to dive inward to start the process of digging down into those cracks in our hearts we would rather ignore and break them wide open even when it is painful because this is the day to reveal to ourselves the truth of who we were last year and to commit to the work we need to do this year to better ourselves if we can see ourselves flaws and all that is the moment our hearts break open enough to let others in we continue with the amidah i'd like to invite jerry silverheart to come open the ark we'll sing the first line of the amidah and then we'll continue silently jerry [Music] time [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Laughter] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] um please continue silently with the prayers that are in your own heart [Music] shalom [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] i'm sure that as you were praying the personal prayers in your heart there were people that came into your mind and your heart and those are people that are ill so we'd like to take just a moment for a special mishaber prayer for all of those that we love and care about that are in need of healing if you'd like to join as a community in this prayer you can write the names of those people that are that are on your minds in the chats on youtube and facebook so we can see um who you are here to pray for and we can join as a community together misha bayrache [Music] may the source of strength who bless the ones before us help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing and let us [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] the renewal [Music] and let us i'd like to just take one moment to talk about the ways that you can support temple emanuel in beverly hills it's been a difficult time for all non-profits in our country and especially the synagogues in the reform movement we have estimated that there will be probably about 30 percent less revenue that comes into the synagogues we won't be having a regular kind of appeal we aren't renting out our space our ecc has fewer children in it because of covet 19 guidelines and we're trying to offer the same programming that you're used to but virtually so at this time if you've been participating in our high holy day services or if you have been watching our friday nights or if you've been joining us for our many classes and do it at home online you may be interested in helping our synagogue just like every other year on the high holy days when we ask for help just imagine scott redston walking down the aisle holding up an envelope and looking at you with that look like how come you haven't filled out this envelope yet now there isn't an envelope but you can see there on the screen there is a a link that you can go to and you can give anything eighteen dollars hundred dollars ten thousand dollars all of the money that comes in is going to be going to making sure that our facilities our staff and our programs continue the best way that we know how to do them so we're just going to take one moment to give you an opportunity to go online and give the temple a manual if you're so moved [Music] [Music] [Music] of [Music] [Music] i [Music] [Music] no [Music] you can't four days [Music] i it's been a long time since any of us ate at a buffet where you get to scan over a hundred items and take the five or six you most want to consume sometimes you don't even remember how much you love garlic asparagus or cookies and cream banana pudding until you see it right in front of you well in lieu of a food buffet our yom kippur offers us a spiritual one a buffet of the wrongs you have committed sometimes you don't even remember how you were arrogant or jealous until the prayers are laid out there right in front of you you may not grab everything but there will be a few items that you do want to add to your plate i admit the confessional buffet is much less enticing than a traditional one but loading your plate up at this one is much more rewarding we continue with a confessional i'd like to invite elisa newman white to do a reading for us when she was young the alphabet was so simple a was full of aspiration b was free beauty c for confidence in d for dreams and so on through the list no fewer than 26 opportunities 26 possibilities and yet i fear with a passage of time i've squandered them creating instead a's for apathy bees of breastness seas of coarseness help me then to return to that innocence let the letters be letters once again and let them rise to the heavens and form into the words that you know i wish to say we continue now with asham new please rise [Music] [Laughter] ah [Music] new [Music] [Music] feet [Music] know [Music] [Music] [Laughter] sheck [Music] oh [Music] oh foreign she know [Music] [Music] [Music] of these wrongs we are guilty we betray we steal we scorn we act perversely we are cruel we scheme we are violent we slander we devise evil we lie we ridicule we disobey we abuse we defy we corrupt we commit crimes we are hostile we are stubborn we are immoral we kill we spoil we go astray we lead others astray we've reached that point that many of us i don't know if i would say we look forward to it but we certainly do wait for it the confessional i'll hate the ways we have wronged you deliberately and by mistake and harm we have caused in your world through the words of our mouth the ways we have wronged you by hardening our hearts and harm we have caused in your world through careless speech the ways we have wronged you through lies and deceit and harm we have caused in your world through gossip and rumor [Music] the ways we have wronged you by judging others unfairly and the harm we have caused in your world through disrespect to parents and teachers the ways we have wronged you through insincere apologies and harm we have caused in your world by mistreating a friend or neighbor [Music] the ways we have wronged you through violence and abuse and harm we have caused in your world through dishonesty in business [Music] the ways we have wronged you openly and secretly and harm we have caused in your world by losing self-control the ways we have wronged you through sexual immorality and harm we have caused in your world through consumption of food and drink the ways we have wronged you by giving into our hostile impulses and harm we have cost in your world through greed and exploitation the ways we have wronged you through cynicism and scorn and harm we have caused in your world through arrogant behavior the ways we have wronged you by hating without cause and harm we have caused in your world through offensive speech the ways we have wronged you with a slanderous tongue and harm we have caused in your world through selfish or petty spirit [Music] oh [Music] oh we prepare ourselves for aveeno malcano i'd like to welcome up philip and jennifer turcat to open the ark before we open the arc rabbi bassin will ready us for this prayer avinu malcano hear our voice some of us have cancer some of us have lost strength of body some have lost memory and speech some of us are in pain some can't find work and some of us bear the marks of human cruelty inside where scars don't show some live with depression some battle addiction many feel alone some have known shattered marriages trusts betrayed hopes destroyed some of us have lost the ones we love far too soon and some of us have lost a child all of us have seen suffering in our midst all of us know the ravages of war for which there are no words avinu malkinu why avinu malcano are you there do you care avinu volcano hear our pain hear our anger hear our grief avinu malcano here is our prayer give us the strength to go on give us reasons to get up each day give us purpose and persistence help us to fend off fear and hold on to hope help us to be kind don't make us bow or grovel for your favor give us dignity and give us courage avinu malchino show us the way to a year of goodness renew our belief that the world can be better restore our faith in life restore our faith in you like if you would like to rise for aveeno volcano we'll chant this and tiffany avenue mighty and merciful hear our voice have compassion on us and our families onslaught of sickness violence and hunger avenue renew for us a year of goodness we now hear avina mulcain with a folk version [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] [Music] say [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] see i will never forget one moment in fifth grade i was standing in line after lunch and i was waiting to go back to class and my teacher who i think knew the answer to this question asked me what i had had for lunch and i answered baloney and he said you're full of that and he started to laugh it took me a second i'm full of that what does he mean i'm full of baloney and then i understood i was full of baloney after school that day i came in the house and announced that i was never eating bologna again and i'm actually not sure i have ever eaten bologna since that day in the hallway at mary louise aiken elementary school in west hartford connecticut 3 000 miles from here 50 years ago and i can still recall that moment in my life i'm i'm sure that mr nelligan who asked the question doesn't remember it if he's still around and i doubt that any other kid in my class knew it even happened yet that is a moment i carry with me not consciously it just is there along with other moments that are way more significant by the way i point out that moment because it shows that we have no idea what stories and incidences and comments what baggage any of us carry around with us on a daily basis in rabbitic literature there is a concept called kal verhomer you use a lighter example to be able to say how much more how much more so like if we carry around moments as benign as what did you have for lunch you're full of that how much more so when a family member curses you out or how much more so when someone assaults you emotionally or physically and then there are moments when we have hurt when we've said something that seemed benign and had deep impact on another sometimes we don't know we've done anything wrong until it's pointed out sometimes we realize that we've caused hurt and we can't take it back all of it all the moments of hurt moments of anger and frustration and disappointment intentional and unintentional jabs and and negative comments that cut through us this is what we carry as we sit together or shall i say separate on this day the moments that we've been hurt and the moments that we have hurt they don't miraculously disappear even after we go through yom kippur this year especially we carry feelings that we've never felt before how are the events of this year weighing on you how does being confined affect you the hundreds of thousands of deaths from this unseen virus how does that affect you how does racial inequality sit in your soul the mounting political tensions the angry climate on the internet how does that work inside of you not to mention the regular run-of-the-mill moments of difficulty with family members and friends and co-workers that we deal with in a normal year this day is supposed to get rid of all that negative energy that surrounds us but it feels like there's too much of all of it how can i possibly rid myself of the hurt and frustration that's piling up inside my soul do you know what we need a goat that's right we need a goat matter of fact we need two goats just like in the temple in jerusalem when it was standing that is actually how we did yom kippur when the temple stood that's how we purged ourselves of the pain that we held onto in leviticus 16 8-10 it says aaron shall cast lots upon two goats one lot for adonai and the other lot for azazel and aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for adonai and offer him as a sin sacrificin offering but the goat on which the lot fell for azazel shall be set alive before adonai to make atonement over him to send him away for azazel into the wilderness so quickly on this azazel character there are many disagreements as to what or where azazel is some say that it's the name of the goat that is sent off into the wilderness others say that it is the wilderness itself the place the goat goes to that's azazel while others posit that one goes through the wilderness to get to this place of zazel and still others guess that azazel is an underworld god on the same level as adonai one goat for our good god adonai and one for the dark god azazel however we think of azazel one thing is clear we can use this ancient ritual as a teacher to better understand what we can do for the next 25 hours and beyond first of all the two goats they're supposed to be exactly the same there isn't supposed to be any distinguishing marks to differentiate between them and then randomly literally through a lottery one is chosen for god while the other was chosen for azazel it reminds me that sometimes there's no explanation for why one person lives with goodness all around him or her while another hurts for no apparent reason that list we hear over and over who will live who will die who will this who will that we like to have reasons for all of it for but for the most part there there isn't a reason now i do believe that there's a correlation between how we act and what happens to us right it's like if we treat people nicely they treat us well if we're kind and we're compassionate and filled with love then that energy is felt by those around us and it comes back to us but i've just seen it too many times people who live lives filled with goodness and yet calamity finds them often and of course people who don't care at all about the feelings of anyone who live lives without caring and yet only good happens to them it is a phenomenon that was emphasized by ecclesiastes who wrote over 2 000 years ago it is a frustration that has existed since time began the two goats symbolically represent the two sides of the positive and the negative energies that are inside of us rabbi mark margolius writes that the goat destin designated for god symbolically affirms that life is meaningful and worthwhile but at the same time we must recognize that as much as we affirm life we can't ignore the hurts and the angers and disappointments and regrets that we carry with us we need that second goat remember margolius points out that quote by transferring their errors onto the second goat for azazel and sending it off to the wilderness our ancestors symbolically released that which prevented them from living life fully joyfully and purposefully the goat for azazel purges us of all those moments of waste of cowardice and of indecision we need them both the goat for god and the goat for azazel we need to affirm our commitment to life on the one hand and we also need to release the toxins which poison us emotionally and spiritually but as much as azazel atones for all of our transgressions just like we keep saying that this day atones for us as well maimonides and the mishnah torah warns us that it can only happen quote provided the sinner did repent but if he or she doesn't repent the azale goat doesn't atone and then there's like a parenthetical thing that's like ah maybe some of the minor small stuff that you do atone for this day doesn't work if you think this day is going to do all the work the azazel goat didn't work unless we the people did the work first we recognize what we did and we put it out there on the goat on this day then the healing can begin and then that goat the one with all the negative actions of every person in the community what happens to that goat again there's controversy some say that the goat is literally pushed backwards off of a rocky cliff others say that a designee a cohen takes the goat into the wilderness and kills it still others say that it's taken into the wilderness to be left there and the person who brought it there can't look back they cannot see where this go this goat went so here is a goat i'd like to thank robbie bassen for this it sits in her office let's say that we symbolically put our negative actions and feelings on this goat and then we destroy it does that negativity disappear we put our transgressions on this day of atonement to atone for our faults when the day is over does that mean that literally all of our difficult feelings are just gone with the day it's more likely that it all remains inside of you and the sins put on this lovely goat here do not leave they do not disappear they remain with the goat but we don't see that goat again it takes our sins all the times that we were hurt all the times that we were disappointed and angry and frustrated all of the negative moments and carries them to a different place inside of us our affirmation of life our desire to find meaning and goodness and love that stays with the first goat within the walls of the city like we keep all those feelings close to our heart and but the rest of it the negative the evil the bad side of what we do that one we need to open up our heart to allow it to separate from us even if it's just a little bit to another place to azazell but we must recognize that it it doesn't leave we just keep it somewhere else so that we are able to exist in the world cleansed from whatever it is that keeps us from fulfilling our potential it is a lot like the tablets of the covenant tradition maintains that the israelites carried two arks with them in the wilderness one that contained the whole set of ten commandments or fifteen if you like mel brooks and the other carried the shattered pieces of the set that moses destroyed when he saw the golden calf the israelites carried the best of themselves in one ark and the worst of themselves in the second ark two goats one for god that one has the best of our intentions for the year that was and the hopes and dreams for a life fulfilled in the coming year that second one it carries with it all of the difficulties we've had this year all the mistakes we've made all of our negative actions and thoughts and feelings and we take all of that and we have to recognize it and we have to place it to one side but it never really leaves us none of us will ever forget what we have gone through this year it is a part of our story it's a part of our life journey but in time and through acknowledging what it means to us now and how it affected us we can carry it with us and still affirm life and goodness as the new year commences may you be sealed in the book of life i would like to welcome gail fuhrer and city attorney mike fear to read our prayer for the world may the one who blessed our ancestors bless us as we gather together physically distant yet spiritually connected for these high holidays we pray that this year will be a year of great healing we pray that our differences will lead to compassion and our connectedness will lead to action we pray that this year will bring about change so that every human being on the planet can live in the world without the fear of illness without fear of discrimination and prejudice without fear of isolation or loneliness without fear of being hungry or homeless without fear bless us all with a healthy year in 5781 may our hearts be open our spirits renewed our hope reaffirmed to work together to heal our broken world we now welcome the nissenbaum family to open the ark for us for alenu please rise if you haven't risen yet you may do so we begin elena with two words that mean without end ain o this is done as a kind of a meditation you can hold out those notes let your breath flow through you [Music] oh [Laughter] know [Music] [Laughter] [Music] they [Music] me [Music] my hair [Music] hey [Music] oh oh [Music] hey [Music] whoever [Music] [Music] oh [Music] so i have a couple of announcements that i'd like to give at this time first of all after you know what really does take a village to put together a service like this and we're so grateful for all the people that have helped in many ways um our visibility of immigrant communities and their needs has diminished during covid but if anything the need actually is greater and the esperanza immigrant rights project is more active than ever providing legal representation as well as food and medical supplies and shelter to those who are seeking refuge in shooting including children and young mothers so please support the esperanza emergency fund by going to tebh.org drive also you know one in five angelenos does not have money for food it's about two million angelenos sova provides so many of our neighbors both a nutritious next meal and the meal after that and the meal after that
