Kirwin ghost town part 1 of 2 - Wyoming Overland Adventure

[Music] [Music] so I heard this mine still has little boiler or something and we'll have to check it out this is going to be pretty cool [Music] we made it made it to Amelia and Hart's cabin [Music] good morning and welcome to DB overland today it's kind of a unique day so last night I was hanging out with the wife and she Ford me something that was pretty cool today in the town of Meeteetse the museum is going to host a guided tour of the mining ghost town Kirwan so I thought oh man what a great opportunity to check out that town and have as much information to my disposal to share with you guys so come along today and we are going to check out this old town of Meeteetse and have a great time to her way I decided to leave a little early so that way I up there because I didn't want to put everybody behind looks like there's going to be a lot of people today so there should be a lot of fun I'm pretty excited about this they've got a lot of information about Kerwin you know on boards when you're up there but still you don't get you know true history true details of the place unless you're with somebody who's very knowledgeable this is gonna be exciting today a lot of curiosity when I come into place it's gonna be absolutely great now here's a little [Music] didn't fly around the world she used to have a cabin up here but I know she spent her husband spent a lot of time Oh terrific there was also a [Music] to go there a lot and such aha [Music] [Music] [Music] oh yeah alright so I'm going to air down a little bit like I said the roads not very rough at all but still I like to just air down make it a little bit smoother to you know travel off pavement all right full driving so that's where we're going we got a nice windy switchback and then you could just barely see a car climbing up there we got to climb up and then we're gonna drop down and we're gonna follow this drainage but look at that snow it is August just goes to show ya doesn't get very warm up here but we've been having a pretty mild summer this year so that's not helping but all right well let's air down and keep going there's gonna be a big group of people coming so it looks like here they here's some of them coming so hopefully I can dodge it in and out of the group [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] what we and start to see laying in this valley but just look at that there used to be a hole more buildings here but there was an avalanche that came through and it took out I think a fair portion of the town and that's when they decided to abandon the town up here but it's just absolutely amazing just beautiful [Music] I think I'll pull over and let this truck go by [Music] we made it we're up at Kerwin look at this place just absolutely beautiful so the town is farther up that way there's a little man bridge that we're gonna cross farther up the creek but the town straight ahead we're gonna check that out today look at this place I always love this Valley so the plan is the Forest Service is putting this on and we're gonna go and catch up with them in a bit and that way we can get some good information about what's gonna happen today it'll be fun but yeah drive up here was awesome a lot more water than I'm used to and every time I've come up here it's always been into things Thanksgiving time so everything is frozen and there's about a foot of snow makes for a fun snow wheeling trip but yeah we'll grab our gear and then we should start heading over that way 19:31 kerbin entered a new stage when Lena schnitzel Henry Henry's Widow sold the mining district to Carl done Ruth now this also included the double D guest ranch below where we went up the switchback and then down in that Valley and you can visit the TT of course so why is this so important to Kerwin well the publisher George Putnam was a guest of at the double D his first wife Dorothy Putnam accompanied him but in 1929 the putnams divorced and by 1931 George Putnam had a new wife Amelia Earhart so both Earhart and Putnam would stay after double D in 1934 so on this visit 1934 down route Putnam and Earhart went on pack trips in the Kirwan area and Carl and Amelia became very good friends she liked area so much too that she had she and Putnam at carleton root start building a cow summer cabin up for them about a mile mile and a half up from the edge of Kirwan here where they were gonna spend some time and get away from all the notoriety and everything and they just loved doing pack trips anyway and Putnam and Duntroon communicated often by letter on cabin specifications well Kevin got about four locks hi when Amelia's Earhart or Amelia's plane disappeared on that famous flight or the Pacific in 1937 so you know at one point Putnam call called um Carl and just told her that she's lost you know they gave up the search for her and stopped building the cabin so I got the four locks hi probably the openings for the doors and maybe even partly for the windows as well so there you go there's and there's a bit of history about Kerwin pretty exciting I do not know about all about information that was pretty exciting so we're going to go check out all the buildings and the minds I would like to go all the way up to Amelia Earhart's cabin and check that out that would be really really really cool to see we'll see how the kiddos fare out though it's a all depending on how they do today so this is the main offices big building and every time I've been up here like I said it's always been in the wintertime so I think everything was boarded up last time I was up here but look at look at this look oh look at the construction of this I didn't even realize that these great they use these washers with the nails to hold the siding on that's pretty cool we'll check it out yeah pretty cool so this one probably Storch Georgia soon OOP holes in the floor be careful that's pretty cool mister yeah oh yeah Ward's right there there is whole new blip no something hit like their white no just the the woods been chewed out how an animal was been chewing it I didn't know animals can't you would oh yeah that's it's pretty cool alright come on guys let's go check it out let's get you got the other stuff alright so this is the miners main office that we're gonna go check out now careful yeah you need to be very careful Walden sick look me you could see the old power cables how we used to run the wires that's so cool hey stop messing with stuff okay so we go down this way oh hey look storage you see that it's kind of in here see if I can't get ya so this must have been yeah CDH 15 this must have been like where they have a equipment or stuff for the mining yeah this this must have been like an entryway or something because the door to go outside there's an old heater what's this syrup and golden table syrup [Music] another office space some whole windows look at that Wow look at this storage cabinet this is so cool it's block they put a coffee can right there I'll look at the old window that's so cool yeah all right let's see what else is in here just you can be patient and wait yeah put it back down please so more storage yeah that was the window that that's a good oh that's a very interesting window why would there be two windows because you got that the this inside and then you got the outside look at that that's pretty cool and then how interesting [Music] more yeah they must have done a lot of more storage in here alright let's let's go check out another room don't you not move [Music] that is the wolf mind so now we're going to go check out the superintendent's house the big boss's house this will be pretty cool man can you imagine waking up every single morning to that view that one - oh heck yeah I can I can wake up to all these years how are you doing kiddo are you doing good yeah are you having fun there is so we got a combination of bathroom or Deacon as your how's the little it huh Toxie all right and then we've got looks like storage right here and this in this spot right here and then over here was the one horse stable weight going yeah that's a small horse one more stable I look at this they used an old belt leather belt to keep it locked if the tree wasn't here they would have put that leather belt right on that nail that's cool so this this is the big boss's house but they've got to board it up so we won't be able to get inside of it but it's pretty pretty amazing all the kids are just absolutely having a blast that's all mine this is great I love coming out and exploring places like this the history is just so awesome and it's it's really it really exciting to find out what happened and what they used to do is so cool boy develop themselves to another cabin what's this a rubber battery and something Oh careful we can't see much yeah I'll just had a quick bite to eat nothing big we just had some of these super awesome fig bars just to get a little bit of power back into us and then we are going to now do about a one-mile hike up to Amelia Earnhardt's cabin and there's some other cabins in mine and another mine up here so this is gonna be pretty exciting I haven't hiked this long or high sorry let me rephrase that I haven't hiked a distance like this in a really really long time so it's gonna kick my butt I'm pretty sure but hey that's okay I need to get out and do more of this with my kiddos anyways which are having a super awesome time right are you having an awesome time yeah so there's our trail we're heading up the draw and yeah she'd be a good time so I heard this mine still has the old boiler or something and we'll have to check it out this is going to be pretty cool look at that [Music] stay tuned for part two of our current adventure in the second
