swinging for the fences is basically the payoff at the end of the day oh they just free even launching the idea for this trip was to really get the fish whipped up with the normal program the bait to Chum and everything and then present a lure to them and try to get a bike whenever you get a chance to in another rotten there's that other copy is up there yeah that's a biggie out of the way one of the things that I really love about the keys always big fish around and you never know what's gonna swim up yeah we call these big brown bears for a reason my name is Ollie huseyni I grew up in Southern California and now operate one of the largest sport fishing web sites in the world just another day rush mall I gotcha what you're saying Florida Keys native and career fishing guides for the past 20 years fish when I go out to California you can let me catch all the 300 pound tunas our passion is our profession and we know there's more to fishing than just the catch there's a good mark right there he's not superstitious because that's bad luck woo alright get with and come with them we explore the people places and species that make up the culture of fishing it's February live bait pilchards on the flat a lot of hot water stuff going on tuna sail fish king mackerel is on the edge of the reef it's a great time of year to be in Key West good flight absolutely happy to be in the keys you know me I love it here when we fish down here in the keys a lot of times that fishings bait based you know to keep things interesting I try and mix it up a lot of different ways one of the ways I like to mix it up is I got a lot of clients you like the fish on bait but throughout the day they like to mix it up and either fish fly or go and fish plugs we've got this new partner nomad lures so we you know told ourselves and the crew this year let's try to do more surface stuff along comes Nomad with a bitchin set of surface lures and we add all the elements to make some really cool fishing TV let's weigh upwind kind of this way try and drift down how far off do you want to be when we drift down on it right on I mean like 50 yards above it yeah one of the things you have to do when you're fishing plugs is to really get things fired up I like to have a well full of pilchards 1.1 that's pretty sure that's two feet right here now just because we're fishing with lures we still need to build that life and that's where the bait really is gonna play a part for the fish and we did on this trip all right Big Dawg let's start cruising towards these guys right here one of the things for me that make bait fishing really hard is the tie sometimes you get these super super low tides the bait gets in there super shallow turn it off 1.4 I see one that makes my bait catching extremely tall trim up some more you're in the mud catching bait and not catching bait is a difference in inches straighten the wheel and go new drill turn it off the idea for this trip was to really get the fish whipped up with the normal program the bait the Chum and everything and then present a lure to him and try to get a bite well honey snapper candy those look like all runners right there ollie I'd like to get at least 15 of them you know I'm here to make that dream come true buddy we're gonna be shoveling this bait over the side at a rapid pace eventually it's gonna run out probably gonna be a couple Cudas here or some mackerel two that are definitely gonna give us a little bit of trouble it's nice to have a plan B it's nice to hate we caught a bunch of fish doing this you want to try something different I wanted to make a stop catch some big blue runners and slow troll them one of the right kind one of the wrong hoping for some a little bigger this trip you know we really did have to load up with several different forms of bait we had to have the Chum to get the reef fish going we had to have the pilchards to Chum up the mackerel or the other surface fish and then we needed a couple of big baits as well a little bit of extra insurance you know out there on the kite to hopefully reel in some of these bigger fish that kind of cruise the perimeter looking for an easy meal yeah that is a nice shirt no like six of them and then yeah is that a coop you know that's a big Coby a giant Coby if it is one of the things that I really love about the keys is the fact that there's always big fish around and you never know what's gonna swim up dude this thing if that's a Coby right here in adage I think that's what I got there's three of them this one here 50 pounds rushing the props I know yeah its head between the props I think that's what I got he's trying to suck down to the bottom dude he is not very good at this job he's missed it like oh that pilchard is got some special skills though yeah pilchard is like the most aware pilchard ever dude that's a big cobia oh here yes God there's a bunch of them in there huge I know I know if there's baitfish somewhere there's also gonna be predatory fish they'll eat anything Ali trickle a couple baits in the water local knowledge is brought to you by Evinrude pan let the battle begin Yeti coolers built for the wild the Florida Keys and Key West come as you are simrad go with confidence go with Simrad Nomad design crafted by experienced and BD outdoors calm another copy is up there and get that's a biggie out of the way oh yeah they're not they're not shy I got a light leader on here I'm a little nervous about in the keys more than a lot of places you've got to be ready for anything where'd they go they're around there probably with my fish you might want to get one of those plugs ready I got one I got one just tell me where we're there on a rock pile dirty green water in close to shore brush out the right rig ready pin debate on and convert it but you might have to get ready with the gaff here let's go on this thing this is a big fish right here he's he's 50 pounds now we call these the big brown bears for a reason when you put that stick in them he's gonna go crazy all right buddy I don't see the other ones but he's right here let me come get him yeah are you ready head we're so long that sick there's another couple of them back there Oh trust me the head on that fish was just like concrete oh look at that such a big bastard don't know what that'd be boy he's got some way that's handy we were just talking about thick heavy fish this is the densest of any fish I've ever held not bad the kind of gets big huh no I think it's a lot better in a balloon runner pleasant surprise Wow look at that animal seeing this is what we don't get on our side we don't just try to make bait and have a 50-pound see the bait or nothing yeah pretty much I called it to us there might be some cobia here I hate when you're right doesn't happen often how quick the day changes tell me an ollie being that we get to fish a lot together we're always trying mix things up we're gonna go out about 11 miles from here we're gonna set up same game edge of the reef for the Chum out throw pilchards over the side and I'm also gonna put the kite up with a bit one of those big blue runners but what I want to do something a little different we're not just gonna catch the fish on bait so we're just gonna throw lures all day pretty much you know I'm so happy to catch a fish on a lure compare debate it's just especially these surface lures the bite so awesome to watch one of the cool things about going to Australia was getting to learn about each lure so you want that little kind of doing a walk the dog thing under the water and it's alright if it kind of splashes that a little bit a little bit different action on the heavier one huh it doesn't have to be gone fast they'll definitely eight it's light as long it's got that action we don't really do a lot of like stick bait fishing and to have game and the guy that designed them you know kind of teaching you how to work each one was pretty dang cool it's starting to get going big Mackrell right there is that that splash yeah oh there you go missed it again it's - I think I have a bonito there's a mackerel flying out of the water man it lit up with a little extra chomp yeah this takes a little time sometimes yeah on this trip I actually ran into sort of a familiar fish down in Mexico we catch a back row called Sierra it's Fisher a little slow like us oh yeah the nice big one right the big zero now those that feed anyone wants to go on the hand with them yeah if you don't take the raw limit to leave that one following it up big macro little typically caught inshore quick to jump on anything shiny a chrome spoon a lure with some shine to it yeah so like we'll get them in Mexico that'd be a really good one but they do get bigger down there yeah bigger than bigger than that yeah they get a little bigger than this here but not much that's a nice macro look at that purple okay doors open he had no trouble eating that frickin mad scat that's for sure down here we have a few different species of mackerel we have the cero mackerel which you know is a mackerel that grows to be maybe 15 pounds at the max no they're cool things that's why I was asking it it's like I know you got a lot of them it doesn't seem like they get a lot of the respect you know I would feel like the Cudas get more respect oh you eat one or you catch a bunch yeah yeah you know not really the best fighter decent strike but really good table fare the Mexicans love them for ceviche and fish tacos there he goes all right nice release you know yellowtail snapper while they're probably the smallest fish we're gonna chase out here they are voracious little eaters man once you get them whipped up oh they just frame launch right there next to the boat they will come to the surface just looking for that next meal one yellowtail goes for it and then all the rest get hopped up on it was on the Riptide no no you want that one either there you see some you little yellow tail back there but the bigger ones are further back in the school the size enough and the bigger ones will come and they'll eat that lure where you can't get a bait pass the small ones you throw that back there and you catch a nice one you know there's always a lot of different things going on you might have a ball at yellowtail behind the boat and that's what you're keyed in on but what do you think swimming around that ball at yellowtail with whoa look at that King was a cooter our King let me clear that other line no you all right I might have been a CUDA seemed like a really soft bite yeah I think it might have been a CUDA oh look at that what's chasing it well you're about you might have just got big yeah one thing different in Florida is a lot of these fish have teeth and you've definitely got to respect them it's awesome right behind this one I don't think it's not a king I would say though big old cooter double-header now the targeted species but fun anyway one thing that we don't deal with a lot at home is toothy fish on a hand with that guy be afraid of teeth the trouble hoods all of you boss he's got a hook inside his mouth to what matters Freddie oh this one's got legged the gray but looks purple on the back yeah alright dude those love that Lord love it one thing I noticed when we were throwing all the bait in the water and the fish was shooting out of the water and sky rockin Holley was a little gun-shy got your gift I'm hooked really weird - just how you like it oh you not know them you come flying out safe to say they like that lure it's literally a bite every gasp I know free free set him free thank you sir you know after that trip to Australia I have a newfound respect for mackerel I'm just gonna troll this go back up on that point then we'll have another drift down in Australia we got to learn about a fish firsthand that's called the Spanish bard Mackel this is definitely the king of the mackerel look at this thing it's a bigger fish of the king fish it's a heavier fish than a king fish it's got bigger gnarlier teeth than a king fish and they like to bite a lure right next to the boat and aren't too worried about where they land yes my hem there's mackerel everywhere sharks mackerel Abel and mackerel [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] he had stories from Australia where the giant fish is giant mackerel were literally jumping in the boat seriously oh I'm out I couldn't imagine a 50 pound fish jumping in the boat I've had small Xero and Spanish mackerel jump in the boat [Music] we both had lures out back we're skipping the lures in and this torpedo comes over the back engine yeah right a demon like out standing here it's just like coming straight at me and I'm getting out of the way this thing goes in the water left us like we're out of here I'm still shaking you know it's sketchy but when a 50-pounder comes flying in the boat you better dog that was oh my eyes that was seriously one of the scariest things I've seen Eddie oh my god mackerel mayhem local knowledge is brought to you by Andros boat works adventure never ends Mustad hooks defining fishing hooks since 1877 after Co the American fishing tackle company Costa see what's out there see keeper once you feel it you'll never boat without it see deck your boat deserves see deck FLIR the world's sixth sense and by Casa vieja lodge experience five star angling in tropical Guatemala but wanting yeah yeah wanting gear swinging for the fences is basically the payoff at the end of the day sometimes these things will turn around just went straight at the bra I got a few Knights baits in the well let's put them out let's swing for the fences one style of fishing here in the keys that I've never done but Russia's always telling me about it's slow trolling bigger baits for the Wahoo's and for the kingfish one what I mean by swinging for the fences is I want to go for a big fish at the end of the day now why the superlight drag you just let them run themselves out you know it's a king those big ones that they make that first screaming run and it's like running a sprint then you're just kind of staying in contact kind of like a wahoo it's exactly like a water that could be anything could be a bill fish could be a big king fish it could be anything but I want to at least put the effort in I want to give it a shot no the big bay yeah he's got his mouth button shut with all those you know I got like 1,900 I saw some of the photos from Australia what do you think the big difference is between these and the Australian kings well they call our next barred Spanish mackerel barred Spanish Mac yeah and the color is a little bit different and the taste Florida Keys king mackerel come here you come here from November through March and you're gonna find some of these guys really the only difference between these and that guy in Australia is just the bars and I've seen the bars right but their bars like a lot more pronounced any time you're fishing off the edge of the reef with the big bait on the surface you're expecting a king fish but you know full well there's a whole host of other fish that could show up little bigger than the last one about the same get this guy and so our heading for the hills toothy fish is definitely your department I've dealt with a few of them in my time so crazy man we don't have anything like that there is they pull good don't they they do that initial ride it's the strike you know they've initial row what an awesome game fish they are good they are good game fish I mean there are a lot of fun doing this load trolling that one came down a little bit and they started snapping I think one of the things that you're gonna see this season from us is a lot more lure fishing rush and I both enjoy it it's a little harder to catch a fish on a lure but in the end a lot more exciting oof well rush another great day on the reef I say we head back for some cold cocktails maybe a mutton snapper dinner sounds good to me alright let's roll you
