we're going to have you listen to a handful of songs
by a rock band from the '90s. - Oh snap! This might be Hot Chili Peppers. - (FBE) But the band is called Nirvana. - Nirvana? - That sounds like a hippie name. Or the sound of a drink at Jamba Juice. - I've heard of them,
but I've never heard their music. - I've seen shirts. A yellow logo with a face on it. - (FBE) Ready to give it a listen?
- YES! ♪ (grunge rock) ♪ - It's very slow so far. -Okay, I like it so far. - ♪ Come as you are ♪ ♪ As you were ♪ - I've heard of this. My dad always turns this on. - ♪ Take a rest ♪
- They're really calm. - It's rock, but at the same time, it's really slow. - ♪ Memoria ♪ - This is good. - ♪ Memoria ♪ - All I know I can't understand
a word they're saying. - ♪ When I swear that I don't have a gun ♪ - Yeah, this is probably my favorite songs. -It's a pretty good song. I mean, just kind of mellow. - It was soft at the beginning
and then it got rockier. - It sounded more calm. Most rock songs are like
YARGH YARGH YARGH! - ♪ Bruises on the fruit ♪ - This one's also very calm. - ♪ Tender age in bloom ♪
- It's like... slow. ♪ (tempo picks up) ♪
Oh! Not slow (laughing) anymore. - ♪ Who likes all our pretty songs ♪ - I really like the electric guitar in it. - ♪ And he likes to shoot... ♪ - It's better than the last song. - ♪ But he knows not what it means ♪ ♪ Knows not what it... ♪ - I don't like this one
as much as the other one. - Again, I really like it. - I'm surprised I haven't heard
any of this stuff. Mom, dad, what are you doing? - It's not super-screaming and super loud. It's very chill. - I never thought I would like rock music. It's different. - My dad was born in the '80s,
so I do not know all of these. I was born in the 2000-- 2009, so... I kind of know them. - ♪ I'm so happy... ♪ - It doesn't sound like you're happy! - ♪ I've found my friends ♪ - I think I've heard this song before. - ♪ I'm so ugly ♪ - "I'm so ugly"? What? - They're really calm for a rock band. Like... it's weird! - ♪ ...in a daze
'cause I found God ♪ ♪ Yeah ♪ ♪ (rock music) ♪ - (singing along) ♪ Yeah! Yeah! ♪ - ♪ I like it - I'm not gonna crack ♪ ♪ I miss... ♪
- See, this is good. - I heard this on the radio. - I think I heard it from my dad before
when we were in the car. - ♪ ...crack ♪ - It was super chill and then,
right after, it's super hard. - I love all of these songs. I want to hear these all the time. - It makes you happy
and upbeat and energized. - They're not my favorite,
but they're not my least favorite. So they're in the middle. - You could see him as a normal singer
and a rock singer because his voice could work for both. - ♪ Had to eat my dinner there ♪ ♪ Mashed potatoes and stuff like that ♪ - "Mashed potatoes"? - Why are they talking
about mashed potatoes? - What kind of music is this? - ♪ Said, why don't you stop your crying ♪ - Okay, this one is more upbeat and fast. I like it. - This one sounds happier. - ♪ ...killed my toe ♪ ♪ Grandma, take me home ♪ ♪ Never take me home ♪ ♪ Grandma, take me home ♪ - I don't like this one. - ♪ Wanna be alone ♪ - This is one of my favorite songs now. I definitely want to hear more of these. - I liked this one a lot. This was my favorite. - The vocals didn't sound good. ♪ (soft rock ballad) ♪ - Okay, now this sounds like a sad song. - ♪ I've been locked inside
your heart-shaped box ♪ - This feels very... I feel
like I've heard of this before! - It's okay. I still think the last song was better. - This is good. I see how people love these people. - ♪ ...when you turn back ♪ ♪ (music becomes heavier) ♪ - Is this the lead singer? Yeah, he has a scratchy voice. - ♪ Forever in debt... ♪ - I like this song. - ♪ Hey! This is so cool! - All I heard was "heart-shaped box"
and "eat your cancer." I don't know what that means! - It's an okay song. I mean, it's not particularly my taste. - It makes me want to go crazy. I want to jump around

and not very adventurous. - Wow. That was way
more normal than the other ones. - That was a very weird song. I didn't understand what it was about. I didn't understand the words. - That one was super,
super, suuuuuper smooth. - I like the different kinds of beats
they're doing each time. I like it so far. - I love these. Show me the next one! ♪ (mellow grunge rock) ♪ - Okay, this one's slow also. - ♪ What else should I be ♪ ♪ All apologies ♪ - They all have the same kind of bass. - I love these songs. and then hard, and then calm, and then hard. - ♪ Buried ♪ ♪ Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah ♪ - Whoa! (giggling) That was crazy. There were so many things going on. - Mwah! This is a masterpiece. ♪ (guitar riff) ♪ - I've heard this song before. - I'm pretty sure I've heard this one. ♪ (hard grunge rock) ♪ - ♪ (humming tune) ♪ (drumming along to tune) - Okay, I like it. ♪ (tune becomes mellower) ♪ - I'm definitely a fan of this now. - ♪ Load up on guns... ♪ - I like the beat of this one. - ♪ It's fun to lose... ♪ - I like this one. - ♪ ...and to pretend ♪ ♪ She's overbored and self assured ♪ ♪ Oh no, I know a dirty word ♪ ♪ Hello, hello, hello ♪ ♪ With the lights out... ♪ - This is really rock and roll! - I have heard, like, this song
is really popular. - (singing along) ♪ Entertain us ♪ I love this song! - ♪ I feel stupid and contagious ♪ - Okay, now I can't understand

What the heck is "huh-lie-doll"? - ♪ A denial ♪ ♪ A denial ♪ - Is he saying "crocodile"? ♪ (song concluding) ♪ - The best of all! - That one was way too crazy. You couldn't understand
anything that he's saying. - It's really not my favorite. A lot of them are kind of slow. - That song was really good. But other than that, it was...
(gravelly voice) it was the same song. - That song was a classic,
like, rock and roll song. - The beat is just awesome! It's awesome! Whoever did that is awesome. - Now I want to go to Hot Topic
and get a Nirvana shirt and be like, I totally know
who Nirvana is! - (FBE) Okay, so you
just listened to Nirvana, one of the most popular bands of all time
that played grunge music. - Grunge? - What kind of music is that? - It sounds like "grunt," but "grunge." And it sounds like
you're cramped inside something. - (FBE) So overall, what did you think? - I didn't like all of their songs. - I don't like it. It's way, way, way too crazy. - I liked them. - A big fat thumbs up! - I liked their lyrics.
They're very unique. - I liked the lead singer because... he had kind of like an echoey voice. - I loved it. It just plays with your emotions, I guess. Like, part of the song,
you would be happy. Part of the song, you would be mad,
and then you're sad. - Even though I couldn't understand
a word they were saying, deep under those lyrics
that you can't hear, it's actually saying something important. - (FBE) So unfortunately,
the band stopped in 1994 after the lead singer tragically died.
- (sadly) Oh. - That's sad! That's horrible. - I think he did it on purpose because he could
have just asked for not drugs. - (FBE) But even to this day,
more than 20 years after he passed away, Nirvana remains one
of the most popular rock bands today. And now that you've heard their music, why do you think
that people loved the band despite being gone for so long? - Because the music
that they make is really good. - They just had a lot
of variety with their music. - He was really famous and now people-- he died, so now people really like him. - They were probably a legend
when they were back then, and then so the parents
probably told their kids, and then they started to like it. - They're still a group of people
still sharing the music from back then, appreciating it, passing it on
