Alex >> Eric. It's all due to a language barrier. The second victim paints the picture like this. The suspect is wearing a ski mask, holding a gun to him and forcing him to drive. But during that time, he's able to convince the suspect to let him call his wife, who knew better. English Then his wife starts tracking her husband's location, leading police straight to them. >> The Apuntando Juan Chavez walked us through exactly how a phone call from his wife, Vanessa, saved his life. >> Juan said it was a life or death situation and Vanessa's heart sunk. She had been tracking his location as he made late night Uber Eats deliveries on May 15th. Her gut told her something was wrong, so she called until he picked up. >> I immediately say, I'm calling the police, right? And as soon as I say that, I hear the man's voice and he's like, you're not calling the police. Like I need you to send me. Send him to his account. >> $2,000 one says this man, Houston Stevens, approached him with a gun at Whataburger on Gessner Road. >> Take it easy. >> In his broken English, he convinced Stevens to let him phone Vanessa. >> I just really quickly was like, okay, you know, find a Bank of America. In my head, I was like, I'm buying my husband some time so I can call the police, she says. >> Stevens eventually hangs up and wants location goes blank, but police were already in route to Fondren Road in southwest Houston, the last place she tracked him was he had a gun to me for so long at that point and I was scared, says Juan. He says they moved on from the Bank of America and made it to this Chevron, where police were already waiting. >> One of the police officers calls me and he's like, Vanessa, we have your husband. He's safe. >> Houston police say Stevens had kidnaped and robbed a Domino's delivery driver the day before on Hammerly Road.
