welcome back to another episode from katz's deli america's oldest delicatessen on this episode we're going to dive into the history of one of the most unique parts of ordering at kansas the ticket system if you ever visited us you've probably been told welcome to catches here's your ticket to order don't lose it and i'm sure you've wondered what's the deal with the ticket you might notice all the numbers on the front of the ticket originally these numbers corresponded to the price and pennies for the order as you went from station to station the counter staff would punch a hole in the ticket and the final punch represented your final bill today 400 pennies doesn't go as far as it used to in the 1920s so now we just write the total on the back if you want a hot dog you just head over to the grill and get new york's best friend then if you want a sandwich talk to our cutters at one of our eight carving stations [Music] and then say you want some fries and a dr brown soda well you head over to the next station to add that to your tab now you really got a full tray [Music] on your ticket you'll see that each station added to the ticket ending in the final amount this way you can eat your meal hot and fresh and deal with the payment later [Music] during the lunch rush this time-tested system allows us to serve many more hungry new yorkers than any waiter service or smart payment systems could ever manage [Music] nowadays up to 4 000 sandwiches a day are served here at katz's when you're done with your meal just head up to the last station the cashier and hand in your ticket and settle up the bill [Music] over the years this ticket system has become ingrained in our daily daily life we have 18 different ticket colors in rotation and over 100 million tickets have been handed out since we opened in 1888 [Music] now that you're an expert on the ordering system we hope to see you soon we'll be sure to have a ticket waiting for you when you arrive if you like this content please be sure to subscribe to our channel for more stories straight from us here at katz's daily
