I first heard this on the radio of all places as a kid. I was a prog dork already but had not heard elp yet. Unreal
Growing up, I loved ELP and this record was a smash hit with us proggy kids, but I recently listened to Brain Salad Surgery all the way through and it is "of it's time". That is to say, hasn't aged well (IMO, only). I think, in the long run, the lack of guitar and focus on virtuosity in skill doesn't beat the fact that they weren't great song writers. Lake's ballads hold the test of time the best, but without a lot of real interesting "songs" like Yes and Genesis had, ELP has fallen back a bit for me.
Feel free to deride me for not standing by my boys.

As a long-time fan - ELP were my absolute favorites in the 70s - this is really the pinnacle of their work. It may sound of its time, but that is as it should be. Great works don't need to "age well," as if they could possibly mutate to sound like it is a current recording. Really, that is what went wrong with ELP - "Love Beach" anyone? They tried to sound more current to epic disaster.
Bach sounds like Bach, and Bach played on electronic instruments doesn't necessarily improve his compositions. If Led Zeppelin had continued, should Led Zeppelin have sounded like Def Leppard in the 80s? Or like Pearl Jam or Bush in the 90s? Or like Ghost today?
Great band. Miss Emerson and Lake. Viva ELP.
I love this piece, however, I never understood whatβs going on in the story. Do any of you guys have a good explanation of lyrical concept of this suite?

I saw this in good condition at the record store for only $4. I couldn't pass up great giger artwork and prog music for that cheap.
This song is a beautiful journey. Enjoy every minute of it. Honestly only feels like 10 minutes has passed when it finishes.
