you know people often ask me do I have a favorite color and I always say it's like do I have a favorite breath [Music] I'm Kate Hubert I'm the chief curator at the American Museum and Gardens and I'm going to talk a little bit about the exhibition here Kay facets quilts in America this exhibition is the final installation of a project that started several years ago where Kay facet studios contacted the museum about using some of our American quilts from our collection as inspiration for a new publication that they were making well I was looking for when I looked at the collection of quilts when I was going to do this book was to do a selection of things that went from incredibly simple to more complicated not desperately complicated but just giving a little more challenge to those people who like to finagle with a little bit of fanciness and and I wanted you know some that were great strips of fabric that were really strong and dynamic and other ones that were more delicate and more peace and more fractured and so forth so it was just defining moods different moods the variety and boy did I find it in spades it was wonderful I mean I think this collection really shows that more than anything it shows how incredibly rich the variation is on these quilts so understand the exhibition we've got historic pieces from the museum's collection together with new designs that have been created by K facet and his team and it's really exciting to see the way that these have been imagined by him and reproduced in a different way it was very very exciting to suddenly find a collection where there was enough variety and richness in the collection right before my eyes in this wonderful Museum and bath so it was it was a great honor to be able to come and get my pick of the collection the exhibition really is a treat for the eyes and we encourage our visitors to come and explore and just find their own way around the gallery there's no set ruse it's just really a kind of a forest of quilts for them to wander around and discover new delights and new vistas as they turn each corner and we always like to encourage people to take photographs without flash you know and exhibition and to use those photographs as an inspiration for their own projects what visitors can expect to see in this exhibition is my being totally inspired by a great collection of quilts with a huge variety of different patterns and colors and blocks and and so forth so that there's something for everybody there's something for complete beginners to just work with squares there's people that are into applique or different more complicated things can find that here take what you love and make it more beautiful that's what someone gave me a advice while I was a young painter you know don't be afraid to start with something you absolutely move up don't be apologetic about it just make it so beautiful that everybody else loves it too that they see what you saw in it and I think that that's the advice I would give take your favorite thing if your favorite color is yellow make yellow quilts but make everybody else see why you
