hmm [Music] hi so today we're gonna be going over just how easy it is to kill a MacBook Air how little damage you need to get on this board to render it entirely worthless with a $750 repair bill just 14 months after purchase so this here is an a 1466 MacBook Air with in 82000 165 motherboard and we're gonna take a look at how it behaves so there's turn off that fume extractor since that thing is fairly loud and as you can see when plugged in it has no light on the charger and if you want to see what it is you need to have done in order to get a light in the charger you can watch the stream that I did yesterday on how to fix the MacBook Air that doesn't turn on because I explained the process required to get a green light very clearly so if we look over this board let's see if there's anything that looks a little bit out of place any sort of damage that is too great so we're going to cut this under the microscope and let's get looking alright hopefully you can see what I see get it into focus nope nothing here this section looks fine a little hairy a little dirty but this section here looks fine as well alright looking good looking good have you seen Reba fix an iphone6 by removing two capacitors inside the Wi-Fi chip that's awesome I haven't I did see two MacBook Air repairs they do that I'm semi-closed to calling on because they replace the diode like how often does the diode I in a MacBook Air for the backlight and then there was one resistor by the TPS five one nine eight zero chip that they replaced once when there was no liquid damage and that never attacked me if it happens I'm just saying that as somebody who's been doing this on camera for at least the last four or five years that so not quite sure I am skeptical okay so and hey what's that so we have the tiniest tiniest spot of green right on the edge see this this little spot of green it's not turning on but watch this you go bazinga this little section getting messed up is genuinely all it takes scrape away scrape away okay still dead interesting one all right so we may actually have to think for this one oh my scary so holy crap I wish I had the microscope attached to this Oh oh my god it has to be a way to attach the hdmi cord so let's take a look and see if PP 3 before 2 is present magnificent multimeter software is not Megan if you so but that works VP bus g3 hot 8 point 18 which means the SMC is probably not turning on so our corroded area was over here my favorite cap to rip off is usually c5 101 which shorts SMC manual reset to ground let's take a look here and see if SMC reset is where it should be so SMC reset L is gonna be on pin 5 over here and it's low we're getting zero volts on 1.9 millivolts which is zero volts on SMC reset L so let's see what's going on here so I see corrosion between pin 1 and pin 2 and IO and let's also see if pin 4 for SMC manual reset is low because of SMC manual reset is low then it's not going to be working SMC manual reset is low so not working alright so now what we got to do is find this chip which is u 5110 and figure out how that could happen so if we search for that chip will see that SMC manual reset lc5 101 can tie it to ground if the capacitor is bet some it's gonna turn off the power here check resistance to ground on that 60 ohms OH 60 ohms is no good no good at all twitch stream doesn't work yep or sometimes twitch just decides not to work unfortunately you can watch it on YouTube though 60-point forearms that's not good so there's a good chance that that teeny tiny piece of green managed to sneak its way in there and destroy that IC and yes i butchered the trace I'm not I'm not at all apologetic for that the trace kind of deserved it this that cap goes bad so often it really it doesn't deserve to be there so yeah take this thing out because I don't want to risk actually I have a little metal shields here I think we can do this with a little metal shield but before I actually finish this I think will be fun to show you what it is that Paul has been working on for a data recovery of one of these Touch bars oh here we I'm just gonna give you a little interlude because you have to see this before we get involved with anything else okay are we ready oh my god oh that's an IDE cable this is an IDE cable going to the lifeboat connector of a touch bar MacBook and the other end of that IDE cable is going to a PCI Express SSD adapter are you serious but those wires the ID wires are much bigger than I thought they would be so do you think that the data is against that it I really have to get a connector for that if anybody out there happens to have a connector for sale that fits the lifeboat connector of wood that has an adapter cable for the touch bar MacBook would be much appreciated right now because this is not fun this is that fight Jason probably bought all and it's going to raise the price on them Oh said are you ready to see if the data works what if that gets what if you trip walking to the other side of the room while you're carrying it yeah with that HDMI could you just put on the floor anyway that back to this I gotta get this yeah let's let's get ourselves some metal shields to cover this area or remove our SMC reset I see okay bada-bing I'm gonna cover this area and move our SMC reset IC at sixty ohms to ground on the SMC manual reset is no good Apple will innovate on 2018 with a SATA connection yes much innovation mic mixer says that is one impressive abortion I think that's the right term to use for that honestly okay now I'm not preheating the board much here because I really don't want to burn stuff that I shouldn't be burning all right so now what we do is we check SMC manual reset and we see if we've made any improvements SMC manual reset had 60 ohms to ground before and now it appears we have infinite ohms to ground so infinite almost the ground is up is progress I would say I did imagine this would be simpler [Music] I will say that 90% of the time that that happens I just flicked that capacitor off and it works you know you don't get your way every time I would suppose let's the other pads under there anymore no I was fairly abusive to that poor little see so this is gonna go scrape scrape scrape scrape scrape scrape scrape your corrosion I really want to see if that actually works are you just waiting right now because you're afraid [Music] there's no need to fear cleaning up that section but beautiful now we see if when I plug in and I get a light it's not gonna actually work but it would at least get a light and we do you can see that here but it's not going to turn on properly because the SMC reset I see is missing the reason that happens is simple so the SMC is powered by FA 3 V 4 to underscore G 3 hot now if PP 3 V 4 2 has any kind of any kind of fluctuation as its first turning on the SMC is dumb the SMC is gonna try to turn on before this has the Cape before PP 3 before 2 is stabilized so let's say P P 3 before - is like 2 volts or 6 volts or whatever the SMC which is powered off of it's just going to try to turn on immediately so what this does is it sends a reset signal that tells the SMC don't even try to turn on for like a second or so turn on a second after I tell you know PP 3 V 4 - comes on so we need this IC so we're gonna put this one back on the board and most likely it'll work now a good amount of the time the issue here is that C 5 101 gets shorted to ground by the teeny tiny bicicleta bit of corrosion that makes its way in through right over here that happens all the time it takes takes nothing too short that capacitor and it's very easy for corrosion and getting through this entire section of the machine and it happens from humidity it's and often times I would say 99% of the time that you have that issue you don't need to replace the SMC reset I see 99% of the time you're lucky enough that you could simply pop that capacitor off the board and bam you have a working machine this one is not the case and the reason it's not the case is because I had a snarky title and I decided to record it so you know that that's what you get for being for being a douche as well that's what I get for being a douche I'm gonna get myself one of those chips and then we're gonna see if Paul's recovery works it seems like it's doing nothing well it's time to face the music you have to see if this works what do we say in chat do you think that Paul's work is gonna work how many votes for now yeah we definitely need to get a lifeboat connector and cable yes let's patent something that Apple's creative that's it great the legal department will be incredibly happy with that do you enjoyment from fixing these machines I get in dreaming from the outcome happy customer is fun people saving money is fun getting the money is fun figuring out the puzzle is fun a lot of people are saying they think that your thing is gonna work what do you think of this come on yeah you boot it up come on why oh okay so face face to music how long did you spend soldering that wire three hours all right everybody's has faith in you they're saying you got this Paul everyone here believes in you don't trip I would trip carrying that I know I would I'd be far too nervous how do you think we came to convince Kylie Milliken to do a four hundred billion dollar bully movie I would fund it I think that I'll never forget the look she gave me saying okay for a four billion dollar bullish or for a hundred billion dollar bully no all right let's keep our eyes on the prize the most important part of the machine our ultimate test of functionality when I turn on the power supply fan spin my friends orange light and fans spin so that's just how little corrosion you need to get in your machine that's how little corrosion it takes for this tool for that's how little corrosion it takes to kill this this much and doesn't even have to be from a liquid spill because there's no sign of liquid spilling in this machine all it took was a machine probably sitting by a window sitting in a humid environment maybe sitting next to a desk that was located near a bathroom where someone was taking a shower it takes virtually nothing just think Dini tiniest bit and it's gone ah anyway that's it for today and as always I hope you learned something
