Junior Fellows Display Day 2021

hi i'm mark sweeney principal deputy librarian of congress and i'm delighted to acknowledge the 30th anniversary of the junior fellows program congratulations the library of congress preserves and provides access to a rich diverse and enduring source of knowledge to inform inspire and engage congress and the american people as the steward of a unique universal and ever-growing collection that belongs to the american people the library of congress also has a mandate to inspire inform and serve all americans by engaging their cultural and intellectual curiosity and creativity we launched the junior fellows program in 1991 for an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain real world experience at the largest library in the world and to help us make the library's unparalleled collections and services more accessible to all users today junior fellows is one of the library's signature internship programs and the 2021 interns are following in the footsteps of over 800 students before them the junior fellows program is something we look forward to with great anticipation and we coordinate and work collaboratively across the institution plan to plan for and conduct the program each year each summer junior fellows report for duty working alongside the library's curators and specialists in various divisions in addition to their own particular projects fellows gain first-hand insights into a wide range of library work such as copyright preservation reference access and digital initiatives they experience the library's mission in action and know that they are making an impact indeed before they return to their colleges and universities the junior fellows share their most significant discoveries and accomplishments with their new colleagues over the past 30 years junior fellows have identified hundreds of historical literary artistic cinematic and musical gems representing the library's rich creative cultural and intellectual assets there's still plenty of work to do and i know that junior fellows will continue to make more and more of the library's collections accessible and engaging the junior fellows program itself also continues to make history and increase its impact last year we hosted the junior fellows program virtually for the first time this year we will build upon those experiences to expand online engagement with the public through videos infographics all of which will be available on the library's website the junior fellows program is made possible by a generous gift from the late james madison council member nancy glanville jewell through the glanville family foundation from the knowledge navigators trust fund and by an investment from the andrew w mellon foundation the library is proud to collaborate in these generous and visionary partnerships each year the work of junior fellows has a true visible impact increasing collection access exploring new careers and benefiting people around the globe for years to come i ask you to join me in congratulating the junior fellows program for reaching this 30th anniversary milestone and for making the library's amazing collection of knowledge and information available to everyone everywhere you
