Juneteenth mass shooting in Oakland, 15 injured | KTVU

Celebration in Oakland last night. Multiple gunshots were fired after a fight broke out during a sideshow. Several people were injured, including officers. >> KTVU Joey Horton was at a press conference with police this afternoon. He's live now in the newsroom. Joey. More than a dozen people shot. >> Yeah, Julie and Mike right now. Police say 15 people are dealing with gunshot wounds. Some of those are in critical condition. Investigators still don't know how many shooters are responsible. Oakland police revealing new details on Wednesday night's mass shooting at a Juneteenth celebration with over 5000 people on the north side of Lake Merritt with 15 people shot, this type of behavior and level of violence is unacceptable. >> The opportunity to celebrate with your family and friends should never be marred by gunfire. >> Chief Floyd Mitchell says a fight broke out during a sideshow with about 20 vehicles involved. >> This individual walked across the car, the individuals got out of the car and started assaulting that individual for damaging their vehicle. Several other fistfights followed, escalating to an unknown number of suspects. >> Opening fire. Police would recover 50 shell casings. The victims ages range from 20 to 30 years old, with an unknown number of them in critical condition. Injuries range from flesh wounds to the loss of a finger. When officers stepped in to provide first aid, the crowd turned against them. >> Some of the individuals within the crowd began attacking my officers as police work to move the crowd to a safer location, multiple officers were pushed and punched in the face. >> Very minimal use of force. Other than just, physical prowess to overcome resistance, police put out a citywide emergency call for backup to handle the unruly crowd. >> More than 80 officers responded to the unsanctioned event. >> We had people there, but to say that we can be at every place, at every time, we cannot do that. >> The outbreak in violence mirrors Oakland's Juneteenth shooting in 2021, where six people were shot and one died. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, writing heartbroken by the senseless violence in Oakland during a day meant for joy, freedom and community, we must act decisively to end gun violence and ensure safe spaces and public safety for all.
