[Music] oh oh [Music] london underground's jubilee line is 23 miles long for most of its length it runs alongside the tracks of the metropolitan line heading underground at finchley road the line turns to face the west end of london at baker street to green park from where the jubilee line extension commences via waterloo and canary wharf emerging from the tunnels at canning town the newest underground line terminates in the east of london at stratford stanmore is the line's terminus in the west the station building designed by cw clark dates from 1932 with the opening of the line from wembley park the station has three platforms platform three was only brought into commission in 2011 following the intense service provided on the jubilee next to the station are the sidings which can stable up to 10 trains of 1996 stock built by metro camel in birmingham especially for the jle and to replace the former 1983 stock [Music] trains the five mile long branch from wembley park had been opened by the metropolitan railway on the 10th of december 1932. one year before all of london underground railways buses trams and trolley buses came under the umbrella of the london passenger transport board on the 1st of july 1933. the opening of this line had welcomed a number of new housing projects in the area stanmore at the time had the delights of having two stations the other was on the rival london and northwestern railways branch line from harrow and wieldstone on the west coast main line it was opened in 1890 and closed in 1964. the next station will is on the left hand side [Music] the the first station is cannons park opened with the line back in 1932 when opened it was called cannons park edgeware but the suffix was dropped the next year a mile away from here is the northern lines terminus and when this line first opened many residents chose to travel from there this was because the metropolitan was charging passengers on a mainline basis half the price of the tube affairs so hmm the next station is queensbury doors will open on the left-hand side this is queensbury open two years after the line in just open countryside so much so that a name had to be invented queensbury was the name chosen as it coined by analogy with the nearby settlement of kingsbury a four-story block of flats were built for london transport as well as queensberry circus which still remains in the property of the underground to this day after the formation of the london passenger transport board in 1933 it was decided that the metropolitan services be transferred to the bakerloo line in 1939. in turn it was transferred to the jubilee line 40 years later in 1979 making it today as of this date 2020 the newest underground line on the network [Music] the next station is kingsbridge doors will open on the left-hand side kingsbury is another original station and in this instance is located below street level this station is king free [Music] so so as is so often the case the line looks deceptively rural however it really was the case when the line was built it was only later on after the building of this railway that new housing began to spread along the route so mhm we pass underneath the southbound fast and slow tracks of the metropolitan line the borrowing junction dating from the start of the bakerloo services as we rise up the formation is now eight tracks wide with the southbound fast and slow metropolitan lines on our left the south and northbound jubilee lines northbound fast and slow lines of the metropolitan on the right and on the far right the up and down chilton lines from aylesbury the reversing siding is used on a regular basis to turn back certain trains from stratford the next station is wembley park doors will open on the left-hand side change for the metropolitan line exit for wembley national stadium wembley park station with its six platforms had been completely refurbished in 2007 enlarging the station adding facilities such as lifts to aid the disabled as well as providing a new staircase which is large enough to handle the crowds heading for the nearby wembley stadium the brand new stadium open concurrent with the renovation works here the met provides cross-platform interchange with the jubilee who runs services non-stop to finchley road and then again to baker street the station was opened in 1894 14 years after the line had opened by the metropolitan railway from wilston green to harrow another burrowing junction is seen between the northbound jubilee and metropolitan lines that provides access from neiston depot it is the home of the metropolitan line and dates from 1882 formerly to store the metropolitan railway's old locomotive and coaches nowadays the jubilee line's main depot is at stratford with a few trains being stabled here after service hours incidentally the stock trains on all of the sub-surface lines undergo major overhauls here so we now pass under the steel girder bridge that carries the six lanes of the north circular road the a406 at the same time the chilton mainline from birmingham via banbury and high wycombe joined the aylesbury line at neiston south junction [Music] station opened with the original line of 1880 under the name of kingsbury and kneesden it was renamed to neisden and kingsbury in 1910 with the appendage being officially dropped in 1932. the nearbygood station survived until [Music] 1958 the bridge carries the freight only branch line from acton wells on the north london line to duddon hill junction on the midland main line the next station is dallas hill doors will open on the right hand side [Music] dating from 1909 dallas hill only ever had an island platform on the slow lines the layout was considerably altered with the bakerloo line's arrival in 1939. from 1931 the station had been called dollis hill and gladstone park not surprisingly this long-winded suffix was dropped two years later uh there is another reversing siding at willston green and like wembley park is used regularly to turn back certain trains from stratford green was the northernmost terminus of the metropolitan railway for just under a year in 1879 before the line was extended to harrow on the hill in common with neiston the station does have four platforms two of which face the metropolitan although no services are actually scheduled to cool here as like many of the stations on the metropolitan the buildings were built to a design by c.w clarke so the next station is kilburn doors will open on the right hand side [Music] [Music] opened as kilburn and bronders breeded the line the station had a name change in 1950 dropping the suffix especially to avoid confusion with the two stations of rhonda spree on the nearby north london line [Music] departing kilburn our train crosses over the edgeware road on this steel girder bridge here we cross the north london line notice yet another reversing sighting here positioned on level track the jubilee has more than one turn back facility on the line many of the trains in the northbound direction run all the way to stanmore with alternative trains terminating at wembley park or wilson green during the day in the southbound direction most trains run the full distance [Music] today at west hampstead there is street level interchange with london overground services on the north london line in addition to the thames link which is a little further up the road [Music] to our far right the chilton main line now diverges into tunnel towards malabone note 2 on our right before finchley road the classic underground electrical substation the next station is finchley road doors will open on the left-hand side change for the metropolitan line please mind the gap between the train and the platform this is the last opportunity that cross-platform interchange is provided between the jubilee and metropolitan in 1914 the station was rebuilt with a new entrance incorporating a new parade of shops [Music] now we run underground for 12 miles to canning town in east london we won't be able to see very well in the tunnels but what we can tell you is that they date from the staff to the bakerloo line why you may ask well because the metropolitan also goes underground towards baker street and the two fast and slow lines used to merge together causing the route to become heavily congested whilst there were fast services they had become delayed as three intermediate stations were provided at swiss cottage marlborough road and st john's wood for local passenger trains on the stanmore uxbridge and watford routes [Music] in order to eliminate this bottleneck the met decided to build two deep level tube tunnels similar to those on the great northern and city railway so that they could take their full-size rolling stock instead they were opened for the bakerloo line on the 20th of november 1939 the same day as the three intermediate stations on the met closed swiss cottage and st john's wood were the only two to open simultaneously with the bakerloo line marlborough road had warranted little usage from passengers and thus it remains closed the next station is to john's wood doors will open on the right hand side like swiss cottage st john's wood stations decor was designed by harold stabler refurbished in 2006. the station building now grade 2 listed was designed by stanley arthur heaps today the station is the rail head for the famous lords cricket ground as well as the famous abbey rose studios and zebra crossing so this stretch of the line being one mile long is the longest section between stations on the jubilee the trains recently underwent major refurbishment for the first time some 20 years after the first was introduced new flooring was fitted with contrasting colors and grooves in the doorways all grab rails were repainted jubilee lined silver and new wheelchair backboards were provided in some trailer cars the interior turquoise blue panels were also repainted white the external doors open closed buttons were also plated over the first refurbished train entered service on the 23rd of february 2017. my we are now arriving at baker street a one-time junction with the two branches of the baker new line these days it provides cross-platform interchange with the latter in both directions passengers can also change here for the circle hammersmith and city and metropolitan lines the layout was considerably altered with the jubilees arrival in 1979. there only used to be three platforms on the bakerloo with two separate platforms for the southbound stanmore and queen's park branches in the northbound direction there only had been the one platform so a brand new one had to be constructed step plate junctions had to be installed around the existing bakerloo in order to minimize disrupting the service while the jubilee was being constructed nowadays there is still of course rail links between the bakerloo and jubilee with the bakerloo now at full line capacity generated by the extra traffic coming from both the stanmore and queen's park branches the situation in later years had become intolerable the proposal was to build a brand new line that would leave baker street for the run to charing cross via bond street the next station west from the bakerloo at oxford circus construction began in 1972 and had intended to open at the same time as her majesty queen elizabeth ii silva jubilee in 1977. however it opened two years later by her son the prince of wales on the 1st of may 1979. the tunnels are therefore not constructed in the typical form of cast iron but in concrete the next station is fun street doors will open on the right hand side change for the central line bond street is located on london's busiest shopping thoroughfare additionally being the closest station to the famous selfridges store interchange is provided with the central line that could only run into bond street from a west to east axis the tube line dates from 1900 built by the central london railway sometime in the future the station will also be the interchange with the elizabeth line or crossrail as yet at the time of filming still not open so this is green park the jubilee was the last line to arrive here the piccadilly opening in 1906 and the victoria 10 years later before our line in 1969 the new extension starts here to stratford although before we traverse it we shall pop over to the nearby charing cross station now served by only bakerloo and northern line services the platforms on the jubilee line lie eerily silent after they were taken out of commission on november the 19th 1999 with the formal opening of the route to stratford various plans had been proposed to reopen the old tube platforms as part of the jle towards waterloo and lewisham but was ultimately defeated due to the fact that the tunnels would have been constructed with sharp radius curves and could have been a disadvantage to journey times we now turn onto the jubilee line extension to stratford originally planned to be called the fleet line the route of it would have taken passengers out towards aldwich fenchurch street lewisham and thames mead nevertheless with lack of funds this plan didn't come into fruition the docklands area of london had at the time become a buoyant area especially when the docklands light railway was built in the late 80s attracting hundreds of commuters every day so with all this in mind the act of parliament was granted to london transport for the building of the jubilee line extension to stratford via waterloo and london bridge in 1992 the extension had originally intended to be built in a time of just 53 months from december 1993 though with large delays as a result of rising costs the collapse of the heathrow express tunnels whose route had used the same new austrian tunneling method and with the elizabeth tower over westminster beginning to tilt construction of the line wasn't fully completed until five years later doors will open on the left hand side change for the circle and district line exit for westminster abbey and houses of parliament first station on the extension is westminster the seats of government and where the transport act of 1992 was given permission for the line to be constructed [Music] the jubilee platforms here are positioned one above the other so it doesn't cause any subsidence damage to the famous clock tower a new government building was built causing the existing district and circle line tracks to be lowered by about eight inches not surprisingly the tube line platforms are at the deepest on the line being the last station to open on the 22nd of december 1999. the platform edge doors are the most striking innovation on the line as well as being their first such usage in the uk naturally they have a safety benefit to stop passengers from falling onto the tracks but also for their ventilation management the line now passes beneath the river thames one of four such crossings the most of any on the network [Music] the jubilee line extension opened in three stages in 1999 the first was between stratford and north greenwich on may 14th to waterloo on 24th of september and throughout on the 20th of november the eventual cost of the entire project had risen to a staggering figure of 3.5 billion pounds doors will open on the right hand side change for the bakerloo northern it's now back to conventional side by side running as we arrive at waterloo which provides interchange with the bakerloo northern waterloo and city lines and southwestern railway services from the mainline station above the former eurostar international terminus closed in 2007 with relocation to some pancreas international the jle platforms are naturally the deepest of the four tube lines to serve the main tube station and with the platforms of the bakerloo and northern lines being built at the opposite end of the station two 140 meter long moving walkways were installed the distance between waterloo and southwark is the shortest between stations on the line being a quarter of a mile apart change for national rail services from waterloo east [Music] [Applause] located on a cramped site suffolk station is beneath the viaduct of the southeastern lines the station has interchange with those at waterloo east whose platforms can be reached from the jubilees main concourse and are also jointly connected by walkway to the main south western station at the opposite end as of october 2016 the jubilee is part of the night tube where the entire line operates for 24 hours on friday and saturday nights running at 10 minute intervals between stanmore and stratford other lines were also adopted into the scheme and these include the central northern piccadilly and victoria lines as well as the london overground's east london line from highbury in islington to new cross gate [Music] london bridge london bridge is another major interchange station with both the main line and the city branch of the northern line following an independent report recommended that london underground investigate passenger flow and congestion in stations after the king's cross fire the congested northern line platforms were rebuilt during the late 1990s increasing the platforms and circulation areas for the opening of the jle a new ticket hall was created in the arches under the mainline station with entrances at joyner street and borough high street [Music] the jubilee began running under the new signaling system of automatic train operation or ato which uses the cell track s40 moving block system and provide a capacity of 30 trains per hour it's ironic to actually believe that london was where the birth of underground railways began in 1863 it is also the city where ato was first used on the victoria line 104 years later in 1969. the 1996 stock were ordered especially for the jle to displace the 1983 stock trains that had only been in service for less than 20 years the design was done by austin at its birmingham and rugby facilities and the first six trains were manufactured in austin's barcelona factory to the 1996 stock design all trains entered service with six carriages though in early 2005 with increasing patronage on the line and as part of the capacity upgrade to the jubilee line a seventh car was added to each existing 1996 stock train and four completely new trains were added to the fleet sometimes station was designed with a futuristic style in mind by ian ritchie architects extensively using natural light and is built in both a cut and cover and tube design the cut and cover section is supported by lattice concrete beams allowing light to penetrate the platforms below the platforms are reached by lifts and escalators so the next station is canada water doors will open on the right hand side change for london overground the station at canada water offers passengers the opportunity to connect with london overground's east london line from highbury and islington to west croydon and clapham junction the ell platforms were constructed during the line's lengthy closure from 1995 to 1998 with the strengthening of the brunel tunnel under the river thames canada water also is the start of the docklands area [Music] customer service update i present this [Music] no it's probably because your fingers this is where we pass beneath the river thames for the second time oh no yeah oh this large junction with its scissors crossover can mean that trains can terminate here and access either platform the next station is canary wharf doors will open on the right hand side change for the dlr [Music] one of the largest stations on the line canary wharf being at the center of the docklands business development is overlooked by the famous canary wharf tower block and now the second tallest skyscraper in the uk as we have heard the dlr began running to canary wharf albeit to two separate stations in 1987 which had brought in some improvement to workers in this region the jubilee extension had welcomed even more improvement since that time the large airy station handles up to nearly 54 million passengers in 2019 one of the line's greatest throughputs overall the jubilee line carries up to 213 million passengers a year once again the line descends downwards to the bottom of the river to pass beneath it for a third time um [Music] all tunnels on the underground have been provided with lights which are normally turned on during engineering works or cleaning purposes and so on with a short section of tunnel having its lights turned on it allows us really to see the full size of these 14 diameter tunnels larger than the old cast iron sections that are 12 meters in diameter the original intention for the larger than normal sized tunnels was to add an emergency walkway furthest away from the live rail and could be used in an event of an evacuation to passengers though the rules have since been revised for emergency personnel only we are now arriving at north greenwich with a unique center platform that is used to turn back certain trains during the day [Music] the imposing millennium dome now the o2 overlooks the station as in the year 2000 it handled up to nearly 4 million visitors the station however wasn't built for the dome it was built to act as a catalyst for new housing on the greenwich peninsula formed by the curvature of the river thames on the 28th of june 2012 the emirates airline cable car was opened linking the northern shore of the thames at the royal victoria dock the three road layout was chosen because of the possible extension of the jubilee out towards thames mead something to this date will not happen for the final time we pass back under the river for the run to canning town on the north side is [Music] [Music] this brief section of cut and cover takes us to the end of the underground section and now remain outside all the way to stratford two branches of the dlr join us here one joins us on the right at the same level whilst the other comes in from the left to now pass over us to form an upper level connection including services to the excel exhibition center and london city athletes canning town west ham and stratford are the only stations on the extension not to have platform edge doors interchanges offered with the dlr branches to bechten stratford international bank tower gateway and woolwich arsenal the latter connecting with london city airport we now run alongside the stratford international branch of the dlr all the way to stratford opened in 2011 on the former tracks of the north london line from richmond to north woolwich the line was curtailed as far as stratford closing the route to north woolwich in november 2006 utilizing the track to become part of the dlr and future crossrail elizabeth line services we passed our lane station on the dlr the next station is west ham doors will open on the right hand side change for the district hammersmith and city lines dlr and national rail services the final station on the route is west ham as well as the dlr today passengers can change onto the high level platforms of the district and hammersmith and city lines and the former london tilbury and south end line now run by c2c this is abby road station on the final leg of our journey our train passes around the back of the jubilee's main depot at stratford owned by train manufacturer austin built on a former fruit and vegetable market the depot has 11 covered roads being able to accommodate three trains of 1996 stock inside the depot the track beds have been raised and have proven more popular to the workers there instead of being in the traditional pit we passed stratford high street these station the next station is stratford change for the central line dlr and national rail this is the end of the line stratford a multi-level interchange station with both heavy rail tube and light rail systems there are 17 platforms in this magnificent station with three on the jubilee three on the dlr three on the central line two for the north london line and eight for the great eastern main line there is also a large bus station that was established at the same time as the new station building came into use in 1994. the whole site has gone through a major metamorphosis with the arrival of high speed 1 in 2007 and the building of the westfield shopping center concurrent with the london 2012 olympic and paralympic games in total the station handles up to nearly 61 million passengers every year with 4.5 million of those interchanging between trains [Music] [Music] oh [Music] me
