[Music] and tonight on joining his prime concern about the vaccine hesitancy in the ashanti region as officials complain about low turnout on day one of the second round of astrazeneca vaccination we'll also tell you what dangers you're putting yourself and others around you in if you're ignoring advice to observe the cover 19 protocols also here on joining use prime tonight at tamil in the people's national convention as party executives clash at a news conference with accusations of funds being embezzled osaka tree who is said to have been suspended will join us here on joining his prime and kamina former chief of staff kojo impeaning backs calls for national policy mandating the president to pay for private travels on the presidential jets amidst fresh allegations by the minority that president aku fado's recent trip cost the taxpayer 3.4 million cities we'll also bring you details on a story that's been trending today in the northeast region where the npp chairman there says he will ensure persons affiliated with the opposition in dc are not recruited into the ongoing enlistment in the various security agencies come out as any dc supporter to criticize mpp we will fish you out and remove your application but the minority in parliament says the comment is reckless and lawless the navy the air force ghana immigration ghana prisons and ghana national fire service is not political office for members of the ruling new patriotic party later in business commercial prairie operators expressed worry about encroachment of buffer zones around quarry site which is having a negative impact on extraction for construction purposes as we sit here there are so many challenges facing the industry and this comes from of course encroachment of buffer zones around the paris joining us prime is coming to you live from our studios at final fantasy tv because you are free to air dstv channel 421 go tv 144 thus your home of independent fearless credible and impactful journalism stated in hello again many thanks for joining us my name is anne hestermin and organa has four months put in every effort to procure vaccines to protect its citizens against the covered 19 virus which has killed many people and disrupted the economy in many respects but just when the vaccines became available some industriality regional capital kumasi have been slow in taking advantage to get the job that's what technical people call vaccine hesitancy today we'll bring you an update on the second round of the astrazeneca vaccination taking place in all 16 regions of the country for persons who took the first job in march ghana is a bright spot in africa when it comes to vaccinations so it comes as a surprise that vaccine hesitancy seemed to be showing its head in the ashanti regional capital kumasi will be live there and bring your conversation on that shortly but the story is completely different in the bono and greater crowd regions that's mad rush as the data suggests in the bona region here's what our monitoring revealed in march and april this year frontline health workers comprising of doctors nurses and other health workers across the region were lucky to have received the astrazeneca vaccines today the region has received some consignment of coved johnson and johnson vaccine which has been assigned to frontline security personnel people above 60 years and those with co-morbidities in the districts with the most cases dr fred and marco barton is the regional director of health services we are lucky and we are grateful to director general ghana health service minister of health for the allocations that we have gotten for jng what their priority is that look let's give our security agencies because they are going to still lead the fight too and especially we are targeting these four districts and especially the sub-districts where the cases are a lot so that's where we are targeting the security agencies then after that if you look at the people who are dying it's more 60 and above so the plan is that look barring every whatever we will get after we have given the second boost for all the health workers that receive the first dues we are going to go to these high risk people with the jng and also with the astrazeneca so this is the plan that we want to do bonus regional coordinating director mr george padma mensah after a brief event to launch the vaccination exercise called on the people to be part of the exercise in order to help save lives thank god and we're grateful to assistant the president for these and the other do not support that we've gotten adequate uh jobs for fascination so it's actually going to help our people those who do the first job cannot have the second job to complete the fascination program and those who are fortunate to get the johnson johnson is a one dose sort of program and so it's also going to help now that our place is being considered as a hot spot we'll be able to manage the risk of inventing situation in the region one of the beneficiaries nana ya amponsa who is a dama mahima for kentampo was excited after receiving a job and called on all to be part of the exercise enamel i'm very excited for having received the job because even if i die today i know i did not die from covet and i wish to urge everyone to make sure we all accept the vaccines in order to stay safe covered paniano diaz will be dominica now so and bamboo shall we promise to be an ambassador for the exercise and aids traditional authorities in the area to do say i've just foreign some relatives to come for their jobs and i would advise my colleague traditional leaders to accept the jobs and i'll also advertise for this as well so much demand that facilities can't cope during our treat and monitored events here the malamata polyclinic was one of the most patronized centers we visited vaccinations started on a good note at the center however around noon they faced some technical problems with your registration server this caused the delay in registration as persons who had gathered to get inoculated had to wait for about an hour although the delay was quite agitating the people were generally understanding some of them spoke to join us also the network challenges everywhere funny find difficult sometimes to operate it so we just exercise patient and then withdraw the right time it's going well it'll soon get to our 10. early in the day however they experienced some technical challenges but now it's better for me i don't care even if it means i'll wait here till evening i'll do it oh i guess i came in the morning but a lot of people are here so i just went back so i just came in right now but i think the line is now okay disease control officer at the ayaw central municipal health directorate emanuel akasiriku explained that the polyclinic began as a means to salvage the situation so actually we are working with an online application and then it went off so we resorted to manual work putting the data into a manual system that we later upload but it wasn't long before the system came back so everything is smoothly going on now we visited the entrance university hospital which also had its dose of challenges matilda ambaka is a community nurse it's so far so good but some of the challenges we'll be having is most of the people they didn't take their first jam here but they come in they walk in and they want you to attend to them which you cannot do so so you have to direct them to go to the previous place that they took the first jam that has been our challenge so far today we've been able to vaccinate 10 people judith our chittender joining us so that's our monitoring of the situation in the bona region in the ashanti region of course we'll bring you a few uh report later and then here in accra but let me bring you some you know data on vaccine hesitancy and of course we're sourcing this from the cdc and so um according to the cdc 38 percent uh of you know respondents that's a survey that conducted uh you know showed some hesitancy as far as vaccinations are concerned uh now six out of ten uh hesitancy in benin liberia niger senegal and togo and so clarigan is not listed in these countries there now in ghana 40 of those who are unwilling to be vaccinated cited mistrust of the government and that is very key uh so these are you know data these are responses coming from the survey from the cdc and of course this is a 2020 survey conducted it also says that vaccine acceptance among people who knew someone with a parakovic 19 infection was higher than those who did not and that is at 13 and so that is what the cdc is saying so generally uh that is the information we have on vaccine hesitancy in uh africa according to the cdc let's go on to zoom now and speak to nanaku fikuachi uh he is a public health researcher nana thank you very much for your time here on joining us prime you you spend some number of years studying in infection control uh you know vaccine hesitancy is not really a thing here in ghana we have quite a good reputation when it comes to vaccination what you see is the challenge in this particular situation well good evening and thank you for having me um i think it's important to be clear there that most of the countries for example that you touched on um where there is even very high coverage in vaccine hesitancy also did not previously have that amount of apprehension about other vaccines including those that we give to children um those that people take to travel like yellow fever so it's it's it's a very specific set of factors here that are driving apprehension about this vaccine and because of the the fact that those are the fact that when it comes to diligent misinformation um maybe mistrust of public authorities um you know just maybe just lack of access to good information also um those things in some way or the other exist here to you just read for example um the stats about the percentage of people 40 percent who are hesitant to save because of mistrust so i think it's important that we we don't jump the gun on the idea that there's nothing to worry about here i think we need to see more surveys down at a local level that are nationally presented in ghana that allow us to get a sense of what the general apprehension level is what the general acceptance level is and more importantly the specific strands of misinformation that are driving that we need to do that not just in the analog space but in the digital space as well because that's where a lot of the misinformation is being generated um for example you know i i do a lot of my my risk communication on twitter and i recall when the johnson johnson vaccines arrived i actually referred this to a fact-checking um fame in ghana there were tons of tweets tons of conversation around the idea that well as for jonathan johnson is not a good vaccine which is not true it doesn't have any signs backing that it's a perfectly good perfectly safe perfectly effective vaccine so we have to be aware that there is some of that under under the level under the surface and try and source it out understand what's going on and then be proactive and messaging towards it when you look at the reasons ghanaians who participated in this survey gave for their hesitancy uh which is mistrust in government and you have a good 40 of that what for you could account for such high level of mistrust and what can government really do about this well i think if you look at any country in the world that is studying the question of vaccine hesitancy the framing of it is not about necessarily distressing government it's about the stress and authority it happens to the kids that you know here we are we are taking them as the same thing the mistress and authority problem comes from a lot of that digital discrimination that says things like you know 19 it's a quote unquote pandemic um that state governments are using it as a means to you know control their people um and i think more even more common in in a lot of sub-saharan africa and maybe even in southeast asia that they are only using as an excuse to procure and you know pilfer and that that that kind of thing so those are the general trends that that that that create that perception but again it's important to declare that that's a question of apprehension about authority in general which is a popular target for anti-vaxxer messaging it's a popular target for for for anti-vaccine disinformation especially so it makes sense that if people are hesitant their hesitation should be direct around things like has the government actually up and down the research not these are safe things that you you know are not necessary or that don't really speak to the actual factors of the vaccine but that raised sufficient enough doubts in people's minds about the processes about the protocols about the safety about the efficacy so that that's where that strain of um of the you know hesitation about authority usually comes from we have seen local efforts by government to have either reproduction or production of vaccines will that change anything when it comes to hesitancy well we should obviously be clear that that governor organized plans to rule out vaccines and you know and like locally it's not something that's going to happen in a year a year and a half this is a long medium to long term plan for that reason when we are thinking about things that will solve vaccine hesitancy now things like you know whether or not we will produce vaccines and you know how many will come those are those after the fact the the the question you know short term really has to do with understanding exactly why people are apprehensive among those who are um doing a bit more local research i'm glad that we have this data from the africa cdc but there are also other studies that have been done um that look at ghana as a more specific local contextual um situation and i think we should encourage more of those and and actually see what those say so we understand like i said not just the percentage of people who are apprehensive not just you know what things make them apprehensive but what information they have all the vaccines you want to test whether or not they they know about safety of vaccines whether they know about the the production process whether they believe that it's going through all the necessary steps to make sure it's safe and effective that's work that yes outside partners can do but that i also think ghana health service um is probably best equipped to do because they have a national reach they can do these national presented service and come up with those findings from that it's those things that should inform our digital communication strategies uh analog communication strategies and then community and stakeholder engagement as well and just finally before you go um we've crossed a thousand mark of debt in this third wave um look at that visa vr vaccination drive uh are we doing well i'm not sure it's another question but i i'll freeze it this way i think the challenge is when you look at debts as an indicator of performance in general it's a bit misguided because debts are a lagging indicator the debts that you're recording let's say today are usually associated with infections that have happened three to four weeks prior so if we are looking at that if you are looking at debts we're not looking at new infections then we're missing the point about avoiding the debts in the first place so if you look at that in this context what we've seen so far throughout august is basically four straight weeks of rising cases of rising hospitalizations and rising debts rising positivity rates pretty much any metric that you can use to evaluate the pandemic is going the wrong direction the question then is what can vaccines do about that and the vaccine access that we're going to have in the short term through september through october through november is not going to be enough to meaningfully be the reason why we're able to control the current cell that's going on we're not going to for example have you know if you look at just simply the facts of for example johnson and johnson procurement we are not going to get i think we're only going to get about 20 to 30 percent of that 17 17 million we've ordered in 2021 so we're not and that's the main vaccine we're going to be relying on to do that the bulk of the vaccinations so even you know a month from now six weeks from now the mean the main thing we can do to actually care this is not relying on vaccination rates that are one percent to four percent but actually being serious about enforcing the protocols making sure people are wearing masks making sure that we are doing proper physical distancing making sure that you know things like high-risk indoor settings workplaces are being messaged too so they know what to do to reduce the risk open windows open doors and enslave the space and that the public health response is actually doing what it's supposed to do we should be seeing contact tracing we should be seeing isolation is being quarantined and we should be able to have you know threshold beyond which certain actions have to be taken because yeah obviously so i'll leave it there nana thank you very much that's the nanakovik public health researcher helping us understand uh the issue of vaccine hesitancy but like he mentioned the issue of respecting the protocols is very important we have said it too many times but once the issue persists we can only say it again head of our health express myth joins us in the studio to tell us the dangers people are putting themselves in and those around them as they continue to ignore the protocols but third let's start with our current situation how how is it looking now well the latest from the ghana health service for the 27th of august we're recording in excess of 400 cases over 400 cases and over two days the 26th and 27th we've had 19 persons dying we have more persons also being hospitalized it means that they are coveted infection they're severe or critical which means that they would need a ventilator or some kind of help before they can breathe and that's where we are now for those who may not know uh you know their rates they're putting themselves in others around them by not taking precaution tell us about how the virus attacks people fred well indeed we have this diagram here which will help us understand uh how the virus works once it enters your system so we know it's a respiratory disease once it gets into you uh your it's a respiratory issue that you would have the target is the lungs we have the lungs here so they target the lungs and the lungs are responsible for pumping oxygen to other parts of the body especially the other organs that you have the heart and the kidneys and the others so they all rely on the lungs for some sort of nourishment or energy to be able to function properly now once the viruses attack these lungs what happens to you is that this will become weak it won't be able to pump oxygen into it you know we breathe in oxygen and exhale a carbon dioxide exactly so this is supposed to be doing that helping the coordinator for that activity now once this is unable to do that properly it means that you are not getting in a good amount of oxygen and as a result you won't be able to also pump enough to the other organs around what happens if it's covered then what you hear often is that if you have underlying conditions then you may you may die as a result so yes serious risk at serious risk so if the heart or the kidneys cannot receive enough oxygen then they will struggle so if there are issues in those areas then you succumb yeah there are those who say that well we've heard about all these things but first of all i've been vaccinated or even if i've not been vaccinated i've been infected with covet i've recovered and so there is really um some people believe they they might have gained immunity for people who think this way what is the danger of being infected and getting another infection because we know multiple infections multiple infections people have even been vaccinated and yet they go to the hospital and test positive indeed so if if you want to avoid a situation where you are facing a critical situation you'll be in hospital then try and prevent it even if you've had it for the first time you survive try and prevent the second one because what happens in the explanation i give your your lungs would have been eaten up by the viruses you know when the virus gets into you the period between the day you contracted and the incubation day it will be multiplying so that it will be effective against your system so if your your immune system is weak in fighting the the virus then what what happens is that it will eat up the lung area and the lungs will become weak we thank god if you're able to survive this and you recover but it has weakened your lungs what happens is that if you get the infection again there's a window within which you have some immunity but beyond that once you get the infection again the viruses are going to continue when they're awake and we know that delta variant is is pretty much in circulation in ghana now and so that is more deficient yeah more efficient at eating up your lungs and so that puts you at a much higher risk of succumbing to the virus instead of so you've heard a lot of people somebody mentioned that when he was sick he had four cylinders of oxygen on him yes so as as we speak there's no treatment as such for covert 19 what we have is the management of it and so the oxygen will help to supply to your other organs and then your system your immune system must be able to deal with the activity happening around your lung area and that's the only way you'll be able to survive right thank you very much and so you have a picture now if you're still in doubt this is why you must protect yourself and observe all the covet 19 protocols that's head of our health days but in the volta region there's great concern about the rising number of infections among health workers regional director of health doctor osaka foreign has been speaking at a healthier performance review of the service in the region going through a third wave of covet 19 pandemic since march 2020 the region has recorded a cumulative of 771 cases of covet with eight deaths a total of 196 health staff have also been affected by covet with no deaths which you've been able to manage most of them currently we have about almost 24 24 35 about 24 of our health staff currently have an active case of of cover so the percentage of health staff affected so far is about 25.4 percent of the total uh number of cases and this remains a challenge since the health staff are few and if they keep going down with the same disease they are fighting then who is now going to manage the cases that we have center for the walter region in terms of covert knight if you're watching joining us prime my name is anna smith we're taking a shot because we're 10 we'll bring you the latest in the world of business plus some sports news for you please stay hey welcome to business i'm charles iata commercial quarry operators have expressed worry about the encroachment of the buffer zone around their quarry site by settlement according to them the situation is negatively impacting productivity which could affect the extraction of rocks sand and minerals for construction purposes the commercial quarry operators association of the shantae region are therefore appealing to government and other stakeholders to take action to safeguard the multi-billion dollar quarry industry which continues to support job creation and contribution to gdp john dodo is a former director of geological survey and advisor to the quarry industry in the shantae region as we sit here there are so many challenges facing the industry and this comes from or of course encroachment of buffer zones around the paris let me explain it a little bit further after every query when every query is given the risk of buffer of at least half 500 meters around the quarry the reason for this buffer is to make sure that the aquarium is not enclosure form because the activities of the car include blasting and the roads which are broken down can fly to a distance of about 300 meters so to be on the safer side 500 meters around the quarry have been having have been selected or have been reserved for the quarry but this is what is happening a lot of settlements settlers settlements building building contractors individuals are encroaching upon and making the inquiry almost unoperational because when you encroach upon a query then it makes it difficult for the queries to operate operate within within within the specific terms which they are mandated well the advisor to the korea industry in the shanty region john dodu also indicated that the quarry sector of hanesh could bring more gains than gold mining ports and harbors tunnels hydroelectric dams water reservoirs underground sewage breakwater at front pier water reserves reservoir dams roast as base materials in water large swampy areas so we can see that this granite which we are treating it in any way is is anyhow is a very vulnerable material and in fact even the post life of the post life of a quarry is also very important it can be used for recreational purposes for agriculture for irrigation and for domestic consumption so we could see that this industry is very very very very important i have said that in so many places that the aquarium industry if managed well can generate resources which is even greater than from gold away from that the institute of fiscal studies has described the performance of ghana's public sector revenue as very poor compared to its peers in the developing world their success is a major cause of the country's excessive borrowing leading to the high level of indebtedness and debt service cost despite receiving considerable amounts of debt relief under the highly indebted pork countries initiative in the mid-2000s ghana was ranked third in the world and the first in africa with the highest interest payment because of its ballooning debt which the economic and policy think tank describes as unsustainable we have more in this report at a forum on the team garner's domestic revenue mobilization rules how do we fix it the energy and policy think tank set revenue that are currently generated in the country are not enough to service their country's debt and pay salaries of public sector employees leslie dwight mensah is a research fellow of ifs since 2009 when we were spending 29.3 percent of public revenue on central government investment and the dramatic deterioration such that by 2018 we're spending just about 10 percent of public revenue on central government investment there's been an increase since then including in 2020 driven by you know election spending but you see generally a declining trend in how much of the total public revenue mobilization goes into public investment mr mensah also expressed worry that the country's present economic growth rate does not match its revenue growth a situation it described could stifle the economy in the medium to long term if a remedy is not found ghana's debt service revenue ratio is alarming and one of the highest in the world reflecting the high cost of borrowing and low revenue mobilization and because of these difficulties government investment spending is falling which will undermine the country's long-term economic growth and development so what do we do you know you know how do we deal with this that problem enhance public investment for accelerated growth we ought to urgently address the revenue expenditure and extra budgetary issues and of course that'll be it for business we have more in the course of the bulletin to stay now there was confusion at a press conference organized by the pnc today to announce the suspension of its general secretary janet nabla over what the party says is girl's misconduct insubordination and incompetence the press conference which was addressed by the party's communications secretary audrey shaq was disrupted when the greater aquarium regional chairman of the party bala mike kankam demanded reasons for the suspension of the panties general secretary it took the intervention of the police to restore calm the general secretary ms janet nabla is on record to have issued statements on key national issues without request to the leadership of the party claiming she's the chief chief spokesperson of the party contrary to article 49 of the party's constitution thereby causing the entire membership of the party's serious embarrassment examples of such statements are a upon the demise of president former president rawlings mr nabla suspended our political campaign eulogizing act president rollins as a great democrat without consulting the campaign in toronto of the presidential candidate which was in the upper east region at that time my channel the general secretary refused to take down minutes and walked out of the said meeting halfway without any permission or assigning any reason a clear and manifest act of disrespect and in discipline flouting the constitution of the party how can someone who seizes every opportunity to call herself the general secretary the general the chief executive officer of the party exhibits such high level of the relation of duty especially at such an occasion number five on the 31st of march 2021 the general secretary ms janet mabla took delivery of a check of 30 000 ghana cities belonging to the party in lieu of a refund from the electoral commission and decided rather surprisingly to deposit the said check into the northern regional party account instead of the headquarters account the self-check was subsequently cleared by the northern regional chairman and secretary in giving back to janet who disbars the said amount with a request to the party leader and chairman contrary to article 54 of the party's constitution an act which also amounts to misappropriation and not only that for it has become known that one can divert a checkmate for the national headquarters to a regional party account and from a regional party account to a constituency party account number six following this act of misappropriation when the leader and chairman attempted to trace the said check she went to city fm's point blank segment a program of the said fm station and accused the leader and chairman of stealing 1.7 million cities belonging to the party meanwhile the financial accounts of all donations to the party was rendered at the 27 february 2021 neck meeting which the general secretary did not object to this conduct was calculated to tarnish the hard-earned integrity of the leader and chairman and thereby compromise their ability to raise funds to support the party's activities well janet nabla joins us in the studio to respond to some of these uh issues that have been raised against that first of all let's start with what is supposed to be a suspension you insist you have not received a letter from the party which is supposed to uh properly communicate any such action if you indeed believe it is justified you haven't no i haven't received any letter from them i've not received any letter i won't let me greet you and your viewers this and evening and also thank you for giving me the opportunity to clarify myself i want the ghanaians to know that when they talk of gender discrimination this is what we are talking about how can the general secretary of a political party be there and no peso have ever 1.7 million was realized uh it's not like they went and got it in fact i was at the forefront to get the money and after the money was gotten one peso was not given to the secretariat to run it and this is meant for okay and then i'm i'm i'm using my own money to do everything no peso ever since i became the general secretary it's painful i've never had one cd from the party accounts if i tell you the amount of money 1.7 million i've to also just run my party business let's forget about it let's come back to the disrespect that the so-called chairman and leader have towards me you see the guy who just read the uh the so-called petition against me he's not the communication secretary he's not when we talk of lawlessness you see this two gentlemen people who don't obey the law people who are so much they're saying a shark is not the shack is not the communication secretary of the party the pnc constitution says that the communication secretary of the party is supposed to be is supposed to be an appointive a position who appointed him no one has appointed him you see those people who were there and they called themselves treasurer what and what they are not elected members dr cyril bohr from elected commission will tell you do you know why i am here today is because i want to follow the constitution obtainancy i wrote a letter telling media houses not to deal with 40 members they are not elected members they were causing a lot of trouble and confusing among the party and the party elders asked me the original chairman who are these people i said uh they said they are also members that they stood and opposed they said that but there should have been something called notice of polls for us to know that these people are even studying unopposed whether we like them to acclaim them or not so we cannot do that so i wrote back to a letter commission to say that oh give me the names of just to let the people know that oh no matter what you do they are elected so it says that these are the electoral commissions said that they don't have any thing okay they do they have never seen them we will come to these issues that we raise but on the substantive substance you're insisting that the amount you are alleged to have spent in this bus it's not true and you you insist that you follow due process let me even touch on the suspension okay i am not suspended gun is i want you to know that i'm not suspended i want you to know that when they talk about coup d'etat this is what it means you see honorable david pasada i mean the 2020th library yeah it is our own fault you know you can see symptoms of a dangerous person when he's coming he was there he tried to stand as a parliamentary parliamentary candidate for a bulgaria east did you know that at that place there was chaos and finally his car was banned we came back to dnc yeah and said he wanted to be national chairman do you know that at the end of the day he hijacked us to court our council of elders could not stop him but my suspension i'm not suspended so you have to be suspended in plc you need neck neck means national executive committee there are those that usually sit down to suspend you they could not form a guru to even get neck in fact honorable a pasara and honourable daniel they could not get nine of the original chairman to come together for them to form a guru so there was no net meeting very well just one minute on this i want you to answer these questions briefly for me you say you have reported this you want the security agencies to deal with them that matter you formally complain to them yes now on the other issues that you raise about the legitimacy of some of the people who spoke at the press conference did you report this to your party elders i reported i gave them they were the first people that i and what was their response i said they are those that usually help them to spend their money they need some people that can be at their back losing muscles so they saw that they are those who can help them if you are an illegal person and somebody is giving you the legal right wouldn't you help the person so it's not like they don't know honorable pasada is looking for people who hate me to be able to destroy me for his information he can't thank you very much that's uh janet nabla who is the secretary general secretary of the pnc the party insists that she remains suspended but she says she is not suspended because due process was not followed we are going to follow this closely uh with the party executive and the uh elders of the party and we'll see how this passed out up next in sports stay with us thanks for staying with us time to bring you sports i'm hans mensa and our head of ghana's 2022 fifa world cup qualifier against ethiopia at the capitol and your expertise as we embark on the world cup qualifier campaign and also the afghan campaign come 2022 however from football and ms puebla produced a scintillating display to be sworn wife of vincent toga to win the converted trophy at this year's ghana center of the world of the world golf tournament my colleague assassination has more in this report over 120 golfers across the country competed in the third edition of the ghana center of the world golf tournament which came off at the center of the world golf club in tema after a keen contest in the professionals category it was emails cobbler who secured the coveted crown he urged maine contender vince toga by one shot on the final day of the competition the achimatta golf club star shot a one on the par 71 to claim the converted title three golfers cobbler toga and john mauling were tied on overall scores of 141 after exchanging identical scores of 71 and 70 on the opening 54 holes over the first two days however kobler held his naive on the third day to post a total point score of 212. the tournament was organized by the ghana tourism development company koju odami enji is chief executive officer of the company we are all aware of the fact that we have been blessed with the invisible line of the greenwich running through tama country golf club specifically hall 7. we have come up with a project called the ghana center of the world project and the bigger vision is to turn this place into a modding golf resort capable of holding pga accredited events or golf tournaments and so we need to add a needed infrastructure that will help us leverage the strength that god has given us with the greenwich meridian line the line the greenwich line runs all the way from the north coming somewhere from salaga through the bono region through slovenia and then ends up in tema here and so this is the beginning for us to use tema as a starting point in building infrastructure that would make the line touristically sellable but the plan is to scale up to the other parts of the country where the line is running through so it's a face program we start with terma as funds become available as we come up with the ideas and the proposals will naturally go all the way to the north where the line is is running through manasse augustine won the men's amateur event tony and nin borton was the champion of the men's seniors category while florence ichiberima was a judged winner of the women's senior events that's it for this installment more sports later in the bulletin we take a break here on our joy clean ghana campaign officials of the ama have locked up a cornmeal facility operating under unhygienic conditions in the oblique my south constituency several other items were seized from some other food vendors and toilet facility operators as well of efforts to promote hygiene in the city my colleague judith architando what's with the team in our report he drains exposed wires rusty machines these and many others characterize the scene as a cornmeal in the oblique massage constituency officials of the environmental health directorate of the aquarium metropolitan assembly stormed the facility as part of efforts to maintain a clean city office ohio office in departure senior office ata osha baby cornmeal debbie akacha musa what's up from new york yeah at the close of the day uber to me naked naked wires the operators couldn't help but plead but their plea fell on deaf ears the facility was locked up this we subsequently visited a kinky house which was also operating under bad conditions condos stored in large basins had dirty coverings while disappointed officials complained the vendors were busy putting up a defense into sanya my way just so um when you go and check on the door you see that there are some growth of my god inside the door because that is where it is placed and every day they pick some they cook and they leave it there our last stop was a toilet facility although the ama had earlier organized training sessions for public toilet operators owners of this facility were operating contrary to what they had been thoughts they still sold cigarette stakes and administered newspapers for use as tissue paper you know that when we had a meeting we call all of you to come and we said you should stop using this paper for people selling this paper for people to use as toilet papers do you remember you remember then why are you still doing it is it because you decided not to do the writing and then we said you shouldn't sell cigarettes in there and you are selling the secret to in there why are you doing that eh we told you all these things and you are aware and you are doing it so now whatever we are doing are we wrong if we say we want to arrest you are we wrong we will be wrong i know we will not be wrong in all three facilities were inspected with one locked up judith our chietando joy news a hundred thousand girls are pregnant in just ten months or schools shut down prompted by the covered 19 pandemic last year some of the girls between the ages of 10 and 19 returned to school with their babies or baby bombs now a survey conducted last year gives a regional breakdown of the figures with their shanty region are the top followed by the eastern and central regions but before we look closer at the figures listen to this report by correspondent rafiq salam capturing how close to 700 girls in that region returned to school with children children account of a single night stunt of 17 year old junior high school one student that made her to drop out of school it wasn't even my boyfriend he forced me and that was my first time too so we try our best but she did not accept it so by now i'm staying in my father house and he's taking good care of me everything that i need you give it to me so by now god really needs months maybe either i can deliver or not by by the grace of god ever since he became pregnant eight months ago her father has been on the heels on the man to own up the pregnancy and take full responsibility but he wouldn't budge four months pregnant before i was in the school but when i got five months pregnant then i left the school so i came back and i sit i sit at home now yes eight months now i left school so the boy the boy that i hate him gets pregnant she told me that he's not the one so finally my father accepted and he's helping me to buy everything that that's our need for the hospital and the baby stains and anything everything that we need for the pregnancy now another is a 17 year old who dropped out of school at junior high school too the first time i was in a form too and i got the pregnancy so my parents didn't have money to take care of me and i got pregnant with one man so i didn't go to school again the jew is part of a hundred girls from missouri fiance who dropped out of school will support from life again a non-governmental organization they are ready to be back at school though with more responsibilities the upwards region's directorate of the ghana education service tagged the number of girls who returned to school pregnant at nearly 700 juxtaposing figures from the ghana health service chief executive officer of life again saudi mohammed kept the numbers in the region higher than the one reported by the ghani education service last year covet hit us and we saw that a lot of girls became pregnant and according to statistics we have about 110 000 girls between the ages of 10 to 19 years who became pregnant and most of these girls dropped out of school in the upper west region here we have close to 4 000 girls and for me i believe this is even this is even a um um a reduced figure because these are figures or these are girls who have visited the facilities health facilities and they got recorded by the ghana health service there are lots of girls in the rural areas who are pregnant or who have given birth within this period earning us is the executive director of ngo life again sahada muhammad she has launched a campaign to help teenage mothers in the upper west region get back to school or land a trade madam how are you able to reach out to these girls to help them get back to school in the first place um all right good evening thanks for having me um so currently um life again we're able to support 100 teenage mothers this year and it was because this were able to get onto global giving which is an international platform for ngos to raise funds and it was true global giving they were able to bring some funds to be able to reach out to this number of and teenage mothers and how we do we we visited the communities directly and we meet up with the leadership of the community so the assemblyman and then the chiefs and so introduce ourselves and then they then um bring together girls within the community and the number of girls you are looking for like sick mothers they bring together these teenage mothers and then we interview them get to hear their stories and then we select them okay and so this covers which areas in the northern region the northern part so current currently we are based in the upper west region and this year we've reached out to seven seven communities in the upper west region and within um three districts so we're talking about the dbi district the firmament inside the streets and in the dbi districts we're looking at four communities which are um issa will [Music] and then we have the huawei's the streets and in the huawei's district we reached out to two communists and domimo and busey so in helping them yes please finish that and then we have the white east districts the white is the streets we have two communities there as well we went to um guerrilla player and malwa reached out to um seven communities in three districts this year okay so in helping them get back to school uh what does it take um financially and what exactly what do you do what do you help them with okay so um after we select these girls the the common practices here is um girls teenage mothers or pregnant girls are likely to be married of pushed into false marriages and by force to marry the guys who got them pregnant so one thing we do when we select our beneficiaries is to even ensure that that doesn't happen ensuring that their guardians doesn't fall don't force them into any sort of marriage so we start by signing a contract with the guardians that prohibits the guardian from pushing them into any kind of false marriage so first of all saving ensuring that this girl is saved from any false any and form of forced marriage and then from there we meant to start mentoring we mentor this girl because most of them when they become pregnant the stigma from the society is a lot and this and the negative backlash and all of that it's it's kind of breaks the confidence and the spirits of these girls so we our main our mentoring program helps to uplift the confidence and the spirit of this girl before we now bring in the financial supports so we would also want to go to school financially provide them with them school materials talking about school uniforms shoes books um and then backs for them to stay in school so we send them in school and then every year okay we got supports them to stay in school so it's not a one-time support it's to see this girl throughout school and that's uh impressive thank you very much to muhammad for the great work you're doing in the upper west region helping young girls teenage mothers get back to school to security now the police is urging citizens to either report or arrest persons claiming to have links to the service in the 2021 recruitment program this caution comes in the wake of the announcement by the service to enlist interested persons at various levels these recruitments have often been characterized by scams with self-styled middlemen duping prospective applicants but director general in charge of public affairs at the police service acp christie fury is asking applicants to deal directly with the police through their online portals all prospective candidates should strictly go by our advertisement instructions and directives going to the commercial bank to buy a voucher and moving on to our site to apply online we've not mandated anybody or group or person to sell police forms outside we've not taxed a name middleman or middlemen to employ candidates on our behalf and that anybody who comes into your home your community your town city to solicit that illicit way of doing business to come in there they should arrest that person and send him to the nearest police station again i reaffirm that anybody or group of persons that are coming to your home your community to solicit for money to serve police forms that person is a criminal and that the community should quickly arrange the police to pick him ahead therefore people should go strictly by that and the administration is determined to put up a very successful recruitment program in this year 2021. meanwhile the northeast regional chairman of the new patriotic party knew dean fosseni has allegedly won supporters of the opposition ndc to stay away from the ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise into the various security agencies now according to him the party's leadership in the region intends to ensure the names of opposition supporters i encourage all party members to send in the applications if you have ever come out as nbc supporter to criticize mpp we will fish you out and remove your applications i have to be honest with you for us as a party in the region we will disregard the so-called due process we are going to apply our own set of party rules because we are going to check so let's go to the phone lines now and speak to correspondent ilia tanco uh who joins us on the phone which radio station was the regional chairman of the mpp speaking on while he was speaking on our affiliate nba fm in the northeast right now capital and he was speaking on [Music] several allegations that have been leveled against him he has been accused of forcing the defeat of the passing the constituency and then a little gamba constituency and very recently he has also been accused by some party members of working against the ambition of the vice president and so he went into the radio station to clarify all the allegations against him or to respond to all these allegations against him and in that process he made this particular comment did he also say that members of the nbp who do not even qualify should apply into the various agencies yes and even uh active collate executives to i mean to start to stop being selective he's asking them that any time that such opportunity uh is given uh they should ensure that only party members uh get the opportunity and so he was very empathetic he said any ndc member who has in any way criticize the mpp they will look for your name in their in these applications and then get them deleted thank you very much that's our northeast region correspondent well the issue is attracting the fury of the minority in dc its leader harina jesus says the comment is reckless and lawless ghanaian is entitled to the benefit of the 1992 constitution regardless of his political association recruitment into the security agencies the ghana police service the ghana armed forces the navy the air force ghana immigration ghana prisons and ghana national fire service is not political office for members of the ruling new patriotic party only again that's lawlessness of the highest order that you publicly will manifest that only members of the ruling party or supporters of the ruling party can be admitted i think that we should dismiss his comments in limney and get the heads of those security agencies to assure the ghanaian public that they are not reducing those entities to appendages or an extension of the new patriotic party offices let's do some on this story adam bona is a security analyst and joins us on zoom uh with more on this uh i'll take your reaction to this politican uh you know that has started already as far as recruitment into the agencies are concerned but you remember that uh earlier this month this year a few months ago the national strategy of national security was long the national security strategy was launched and in that they said that review of the processes and requirements for equipment into the ghana police service to ensure the recruitment into the police is targeted at specific branch and departments into which the potential recruits is eventually expected to serve this is one of the many things that was specified in that document to help make the process clean more transparent and improve the quality of service we're getting from our security agents especially the police worried are these reactions we have seen already yes good evening to your viewers i am you know very worried but not surprised at all you know listening to what the ndc uh original chairman is enough is actually put out there i i don't want to believe what he's saying is what is going to happen i do know the process is going to take place and those who are qualified are obviously going to be recruited into the police service but this these are warring times especially when we have criminals who terrorizing everybody the igp doesn't seem to be sleeping he's moving you know up the country going into villages to reassure police officers uh that he they have his support and therefore they should come back uh criminals in their communities so to have a loose talker respectively you know is mpp original chairman coming out to speak this way i do believe that he might have made this statement because i'm not sure if the mpp has any impending uh you know elections and maybe there are constituency elections original elections and no they don't it's true it's trying to use that to court support if not that is very reckless of him uh in in in the security services there is a convention to ensure that there is adequate rigor balance when i say regional balance uh you cannot go and recruit just people from the north or people from the great accra there has to be proper arena balance the idea is to ensure that one ethnic group or one community will not have too many of their indigents in there and taking advantage and probably starting a mutilate and so to have him say only members of the mpp uh you know would go through i think it's reckless i don't know how the state can deal with him and i don't also know how the mpp as a party can deal with him but this is recklessness recklessness at that peak listening to a whole regional uh party chairman denigrating how do we call it the indiana police service and the the the foremost internal security agencies such as this there has always been that issue and you know it came up strongly during the veteran and the interior minister uh said well uh they are not aware of it the defense minister said we are not aware of it and these are probably even national security minister kandapan also said he is not aware of it but is this anything to confirm that this is what has been happening as far as i'm concerned working with the state security agencies and there might be few who might use the uh the corridors of politics to or power to get in and i don't know that a large number of them you have to at least meet the minimum requirement to go in and not your party affiliation as far as i'm going to say and there's another story yes there's another aspect of this uh the cpp has raised a concern with how the various agencies are demanding that applicants pay fees you know whilst uh you know applying uh for you know to be enlisted into the agencies they think that that amounts to corruption seeing uh the high numbers of unemployed people we have in the country from your perspective as a security person uh is this a position you support you think that people should apply for free and what is your take on this no no i i don't support it in any case uh how much resources do we even give to these security agents some of us have been advocating for enough resources to be given to the security agencies it's just like the university i'm sure even private investors are charging uh application fee you want to apply uh to go to the university abroad you pay and you pay for uh you know application fee you want any of our investors you pay even you know uh international i mean and so as far as i'm concerned uh there has to be a token you need to pay to sustain the process and so i don't see anything in my opinion i don't see anything corruption about this because at the end of the day this money they pay it goes to government and so those who are qualified uh are duly they go through and they are recruited so i don't see anything uh you know corrupt about asking you to pay 50 cds or 100 cds if you are qualified i do believe that you will go through so what about those who go through it's just like you apply for a visa you know those of us from the developing world have been crying a wolf and saying that uh you go for a visa whether you are giving the visa or you are denied your money is retained uh is the same thing when you are giving the visa they don't give you back your money if you are denied you are not giving the money so i think that for administrative uh fee purposes they need to manage the portal they need to manage the process and it's a lot of money just look at the teaming young people looking for job opportunities some of them are actually even paid into connection men and recruiters who indulge in you know pleasing them and treating them out of their media you know income and parents income so i think that a hundred cities 50 cities 100 cities maybe yeah i think so about 100 cities i don't see anything wrong i think that okay it's it's something that i would support anything mr bona i'm grateful you could join us we can now listen to the cpp chairperson who spoke at the press conference today defending the opposition why they think this is wrong why do you think the states must not charge prospective applicants fees to enlist into the various security i'm expected to pay 100 cities to apply for a job as a young person and the youth of this country 100 ghana cities to apply for a job as a youth of this country and that is why i'm here today represent the youth this is extortion at his peak i am appealing to the presidents of this country to immediately look into this particular sex i got if it's true i have spoken to one or two people and it is concluded that that is the practice today for you to apply to any of the state institutions even me as a private sector i find it so apparent and difficult when i'm applying asking people to apply for jobs here to ask them to take an application form for the states to ask that the youth of this country within the context and the state the situation we have here in the country today where private sector has collapsed the financial institution has collapsed a loss of private sector in this country so a lot of young people are unemployed looking for jobs and so everybody runs to the states for employment you are asking them to pay a hundred garner cities 100 ghana cities 1 million old ghana cities just to find a job and that is if they are lucky and we don't know why there's corruption in this country we don't know why the people get to their job and they don't have any connection opportunities [Music] joining us in partnership with star ghana foundation is giving you the opportunity to be part of local resource mobilization under the classroom project to address educational infrastructure challenges in two communities that's the brimant genre and tallon communities memories of the six kg pupils killed in vermont when their school block crashed on them in 2017 are still fresh on the minds of the school children in that area the chiefs and people are worried as they call for help we have one building which is uh in a very bad state we call it d that building was constructed by the town or by the habitats themselves so many years ago and the state of the building is said that if nothing is done about it within a shorter possible time it may one day collapse on the children and so you don't want to be told any such bad news again here the multimedia group we urge you to give for change on the classroom project educationers are equally concerned about the state of some school blocks across the country how much can the classroom project help or make a difference kofisari is the executive director of the african education watch and he joins us alive uh with a start on this coffee you are familiar with the situation in this space and the issue that we are seeking to address to what extent do you think that this project can make a difference the challenges um in the infrastructure sector at the basic education level especially is quite a numbers and um it's a daunting task and that government look cannot be left with the responsibility of samantha at present they have about 5 400 schools that are taking place under trees and shirts and dilapidated structures according to the ministry of education and i i accept that there is an ongoing initiative by the government of ghana through the barcode transplant and then and again to construct these schools over five years ago but as we speak the amount of money required to construct this school with about 3.5 billion less than 2 percent of the funding is available now and so it means that if we leave the task of constructing decent schools in all these 5400 um schools with government alone it is likely that um the children in these communities in this school would likely drop out of school and then miss out on bit of missed out of an education and that is why the initiative by uh multimedia is naturally stepped in the right direction supporting government to eliminate schools that operate and not trade success and the life related structures and provide insane with adequate facilities to facilitate politicians and learn so obviously you made a point that government cannot do this alone but how practical is the attempt to solicit you know public support uh to mobilize resources locally uh to deal with this situation uh can we do this exactly for for me it is about time that the ghanaian public can take control or take an interest in participating in the development of education infrastructure and the provision of other education facilities we have we are coming out of decades of being reliant on do not fund to to to to engineer any social development in this country almost every good in this country was imitated by donors the concept of domestic philanthropy is something that has been missing from the ghanaian quarter you know from time to moria and there is no other time for us to begin to tram home the need for us to invite into our social fabric the concept of domestic or i mean local or domestic philanthropy so that what we would have expected the white man quoting code to come and do for us collectively we can in our own minds way contribute and do even better and much more sustainable and that is why i believe that this approach is actually a departure from from the from what we are used and that is the only sustainable way we can support government in developing education infrastructure especially in the rural part of this country thank you very much uh kofi asari executive director of africa education what's supporting journeys and the multimedia group in this classroom project so for all your support and assistance mobile entrepreneurship and innovation program in collaboration with the world university science of canada has launched a new business competition to empower women in technical and vocational education and training the project director of neep franklin uw sukhari curry is urging women to take advantage of the initiative especially during this period of covert 19 when people have lost their jobs there is more on this report a t-vet business competition has been unveiled to empower women in non-traditional technical and vocational trades the competition is a partnership between the national entrepreneurship and innovation programme and the world university service of canada here's project director of naip franklin usuka curry the women in chival business competition provides technical and financial support to women graduates trainees and entrepreneurs that start ups and establish businesses so for this competition we are looking at women who are already in the tv sector who are already have started something or they are in the process of starting something they have gone through mvti or corvette to be able to be trained and specifically young women between the ages of 18 to 35. so the age underlined and we'll be providing them uh training so it includes access to business development services geared towards entrepreneurship enhancement peer support network and startup capital for the competition winners the focus for this phase that we are doing is for those in accra tema metropolis then we are looking at kumasi somebody who says greater kumasi or less than kumasi honestly so we are looking at the greater kumasi as well uh and we we also looking at secondary takara day by 25th of september 2021 the application comes to an end so you have to make sure that between from today up to 25th september you get your application through meewar project director for world university service canada appearable says her outfit believes that technical and vocational education and training is a strong pathway towards creating opportunities and empowerment for women the invest project is a five-year project that has funding from global affairs canada with an interest in creating sustainable pathways for young people to be able to access non-traditional skill areas and so we are particularly interested in young women accessing male dominated trades because that is where we see an alliance between the interest of the government but also the economic prosperity or prospect of ghana and so we want to align where the market gaps are and what the needs are with strong gender sensitive market relevant skills training for young women the competition will support 5 000 women within five years both financially and through business development projects the overall winner is expected to receive a minimum of five thousand canadian dollars the margins group the implementing company for the gunner card says it is on board it is on course actually to get everyone who must have the national id card the id and biometric systems and solutions provider says it is fully paying for the cards now the chief executive of margins group moses bajan has been speaking with joy business odile and siemoan on its funding model okay so we did a pilot somewhere in 2012 with a foreigners id where we designed a fee paying system and the thing was okay margins even though you think you know what you're doing and the first one that didn't work then conceptualize design build and finance what you think can work we said we'll do that because suppose why if it doesn't work because you don't have to worry about it we we're confident nothing to work we're willing to invest in it on a free paying model and then if it doesn't work then we lose our money that's how i thought it should be done because of the private people are convinced that it will work why do they want government to finance it and then if it doesn't work this whole this is we take our money and we go that's what happened the first time we collected data we printed formerly on cards we delivered only 900 000 cards this wasn't the first national id project after spending tens of millions of dollars so the outcome is what you look at another investment so the outcome is that we give a 900 000 cash that's why we thought that we should change the model because we feel that governments have their needs but their business is doing other things private sector people will know what they are doing can conceptualize design builds finance at their own cost so they can make sure that it works yeah provided that the risks are properly quantified that's rare is register the mother works properly and that's bankable so we did the first one and it worked with instant issues so the idea was that you know and that was for only foreigners yeah but because the big national one that failed the bank of ghana said look we need this national id but immigrants is doing the foreigners that works then why don't you do the nationals that's how the conversation started and so we started talking in 2014 we were asked to develop a new non-fee paid model at that time the lead people being was very convinced that if we were smart enough to divide a few months that we should run at our own cost come up with a non-fee pay model and who pays for that government we were supposed to figure it out the girl figured out you're the private sector yeah you know okay so we tried to figure that out it was very difficult but we work together with ni to find a non-fee paying model just before you go on to the non-fee pay model how much sofa have you for example garnered from the fipe model and how many people well because the feel pain model we we we're supposed to have supposed to have at least 750 000 foreign evidence says we have more than that about 2 million the thing is that how can we run a country safely when we don't know who's here and because the government can then offer digital services to foreigners without them having to go through priority and suffering just go to the staff also you get the electronic services right they should be willing to pay a fee that you test in each and outside to make sure that it's a fair fee you know that they get the services and there can be revenue to pay the private sector for their investment their return on investment and their debts and there's revenue to give back to the government so you're kind of limited by a way of improving customer experience and prolonging engine life of vehicles has introduced the highest
