and he's also leaving no one in any debt about his previous record against joshua filler he's mentioned it twice the fact they've played on a couple of previous occasions and he's one on both of those occasions carl i think he he wants to get that message driven home gentlemen yeah a little bit of mind games always nice to see this is the match we have been waiting for both players to get on with the game they don't play slow pool and that's something mr melling wins the fans like to see both with vast moscone cup experience they've both been at the very top of the game they've both won major titles and now it's just a a race to seven that i will confidently predict will be a quicker match than the one we've just seen melling won the lag and so he gets to break so they see the wing ball disappears [Applause] just didn't control the cue ball drifted over to the side and then got flipped up towards the top end of the table now this does popped in the bottom left and it might even thin cut into left center but it's not easy because not only does he have to pop the ball he's got to try and get over for the two yep so he's not played it he's played a little safety shot it's a wise move because joshua well he's definitely one of the top three players in the world over the last three to four years quickly just before we get our teeth into this match carl were you surprised about the way roberto gomez played in our last contest because every aspect of his game was well below where it normally is yeah i mean he was such a good player and years ago he got to the final of the world nine ball championships in 2007 and kind of just disappeared from our tv screens and didn't really travel around the world playing in events and this type of event experience is key just doesn't look like he handles it too great out there but he is a phenomenal talent there's no doubt about it the man at the table he's also a phenomenal talent and he won't be worried or scared of the opponent joshua phillip please all the clock please well john just throws a cue ball around the arena ball phil so he's having a bit of a bear yeah the combination of those white gloves and the the shiny surface of the ball can lead to that kind of embarrassment but melling not faced basically just a typical chris melling look is the fact that in the world masters he's never really performed at peak efficiency he's a former world number one and in 2018 the world nineveh champion also a former us open champion carl he's got a full cv hasn't he yeah he truly has there's no doubt about it as you said world nine ball champion us open nine ball champion world cup pool moscone cup well i wouldn't say legend just yet but you know what i mean really has got it all such a young man and plays with a lot of natural instinct and flair but so does his opponent and joshua will know he's he's definitely got a match on his hands rack number two our current score is one to zero in favor of mr melling mr milling you break well again making full use of the brake call and he's got a cracking chance of a hook if the two won't go yeah he can't pop these two and play a cannon on the seven so if he's gonna go for the pot i think he's got to come down table and back up but as you said phil does have a chance of getting in behind the seven it all depends how thin it is and how confident he feels he can get back up table it's not easy and into the equation comes these tied pockets and the more pace you put into the ball the more likely the ball is to be repelled two kinds of extensions one where a player uses them to compose himself the other one where they're not quite sure what to do mmm melling pushed out the boat and it's run aground yeah it was very dangerous but he is a very attacking player obviously hindsight's a wonderful thing [Applause] when the player gets balling on they can put the cue ball anywhere on the table so you can see joshua just lining up the pot just to move the seven ball out the way just to clear things up a little bit does time the ball beautiful does joshua phil please very good potter and he does have a wonderful cue action for pool milling attacked when he could have played defense the ball was missed filler did the rest one one [Music] we saw a host of mistakes in our third match in the afternoon certainly in terms of plotting you can't expect anywhere near the same amount of mistakes in this one errors will be punished make no mistake [Music] [Applause] we can't blame chris milling for going for that pot because that's the way he plays carl and in any kind of q sports in any kind of sport in general you need to play to your strengths that's right phil you got to play to your strengths and you know pulls a game of percentages decide his goal for the pot player risky positional shot didn't pay off it's one one thing that's interesting you know joshua filler is trying to supply the ninth german win in this tournament's history ralph sukay he provided six of them thomas angers he was a double champion rack number three our current score is all tied up with one game apiece mr filler to break so joshua's played a cup break there that's when you're at the side of the one ball now this is a thin one into the left corner you could also pop the three with a cue ball but then you're worrying about where the one's going if he does go for the puck on the one well the next ball will be the three so it's decision time extension please it was a really keen observation call that you said and described joshua phillip that's one of the great timers of a ball that's exactly what he is he makes the game look easy when we all know it isn't yeah one thing he doesn't do is he doesn't miss many balls he really doesn't it's a very perfect this afternoon carl dry breaks have been in very short supply and yet time and time again when a player has wanted to drop on the one or the the lowest number still on the table it's just not happened that's why we haven't seen too many breaking runouts yeah and also the last match between dennis and roberto extension please turn into a bit of a dog fight out there because the balls was coming out quite awkward and when one missed or played a kick shot trying to get away with it and that's just the nature of pool foul legal contact that's unlike chris mellon very good kicker of the ball just clips to two ball and that's balling on for the young german and that's normally the signal for the beginning of the end of iraq extension extension please don't know what it is called but there's something aesthetically pleasing about left-handers in all sports and filler falls into that category he's got that easy q action yeah very smooth delivery and it's the timing it's got a good cue ball and all always seems to land the right side of the next shot i know he's a keen practicer puts many hours in he's got like a little academy and even his wife piafella they practicing there every day this is why he's one of the world's best pool players he truly is formidable not a weakness in any department as he showed there good safety yielded the chance when melling didn't kick as he wanted to and then filler just stepped in and the rest was easy peasy three one [Music] [Applause] i'd like to say i've got dennis grave with me who beat roberto gomez dennis big win yeah of course i'm happy to get the first match out of the way you know now the tournament really starts and i hope to carry on with my good performances lately and i know dennis is very ambitious so he's not even going to think about the last match now you're just going to think about your next opponent aren't you yeah albin is great player world champion i know his game in and out and he knows my game we have played many matches so will be a good one and how's the table been playing playing for you in that match uh quite good i like the table you know those tight pockets and the game was really exciting as well with gomez it was tense that wasn't our first hill hill of the tournament yeah i was shaking in the end you know don't worry you can relax now you are through we'll see you tomorrow night careful because there's a few balls in the way he's got to get over to the red three so he's just playing a couple of rails to miss the pink it's just landed a bit too straight but that was always going to be the case just because where the the pink four in the green six was so now he's ever gonna play a little stop shot and leave a tricky four ball or he's gonna risk drawing the cue ball right back now the four ball does go in the right center well he's played a stop shot that's fine this is a tricky one though if you catch any point of that jaw i think it will stay up on this table but he is joshua filler and he doesn't really hit the jaw it's the speed that he does it with as well he just gets on with it he didn't quite get into that as much as he was of light so it went near the center but he just fires it in the pocket and now he's got this nine ball for a 4-1 lead he's looking ominous is joshua best dollars so when that it's the old account that's a feel-good factor you can come into this event in favor of mr confidence yeah this cup break is this is working a treat he's purposely playing the cup break to t the one ball up over the far right corner and i think other players watching might be making a few notes positional shot there any angle and he's fine he's signaling he's landed too straight but he played like a stun draw shot just to create a bit so it was fine well where's the cue ball going to finish it's a little bit awkward but he's such a great potter he's got the air of a young girl strickland about him on the pool table so the nine for five one expectations but filler most certainly is here he's won five consecutive racks to turn a a one-nil deficit into a 5-1 lead and there you can see the bottom half of the draw he's two racks away from a quarter-final against either dennis grabber or alvin autism fact number seven our current score is five to one in favor of mr filler mr filler to break awkward queueing over the eight ball but carl generally speaking chris melling must be very concerned yeah 100 there's not much he can do here obviously joshua's been breaking gordon he's been having shots chris will know that this shot is difficult so you never know but it's easier shooting this ball when you're five one up as opposed to five one down and it's very difficult to be critical but if you cast your mind back to the second rack it's a brave shot to take on this is poo as he fires the two ball in with awkward cueing chris taps on his knee because he knew that was a very difficult shot now then now then melling has hope because he's more than capable of getting on a a roll the likes of which we've just seen from filler yeah the fact that these pockets have been shimmed up just meant joshua had to be a little bit more clinical on that three ball and to be honest for it's nice to see because this could just create this little bit of a chance and a bit of drama like chris mellin needs and wins his soccer rack [Applause] you made the point call that with the winner breaks format comebacks are eminently possible and when you've got a player of chris melling's ability it's almost likely [Music] so you add it to my pool vocabulary there call shimmed up you say yeah shimmed up is where they make the pocket a little bit smaller [Applause] now i'm just interested to see what brake shot chris does does he stick to his brake or does he try and copy cat joshua's because it's been very effective everything is set up perfectly in this tournament for for drama and the crowd certainly enjoying themselves the the winner breaks format the the short races the the fact that the players are very evenly matched you could ask for a better environment fact number eight our current score is five to two in favor of mr pillar mr milling to break well he tried it and he didn't make the wing ball but another ball did fall in the pocket and the one ball stayed over the pocket but he's hooked on it kicking this ball is not the problem the problem is going to be the two ball he's going to try and flick the top rail so he's going to go side rail then the top rail which means after potting the wall the cue ball has a chance of coming down and the problem with that is he's followed it into the same pocket and with the disappearance of that keyboard have the hopes of chris melling disappeared remember a dish here to be on the hill for filler extension please josh was just a little unsure where to put the cue ball at the moment well the last time we saw filler he was brought to tears the emotion of victory in the world cup it's all smiles so far this afternoon although there he won't be smiling after leaving a little hampered queuing over the ninevale [Applause] yeah just not quite where he wants with a cue ball and he looks so good at the table until this missed three ball and now this has been it's been a bit scrappy and it continues so chris melling is back at the table this is interesting moments this just fractionally caught too much of the draw of the jaw stenson please yeah he's been a little bit fortunate joshua could have left something easier i think chris is going to try and pop this brown seven in the left center and also use the cue ball to try and put the eight [Applause] played that nice now he's got a little tester but it's a big shot this well done from chris melling that nine ball was decidedly smelly but it went into the pocket at pace and the second mistake of joshua fuller that's caused him to lose a second rack in succession it was a missed three ball in the seventh rack it was a missed seven ball in the eighth and suddenly chris milling has a spring back in the step thanks very much i'm delighted to say jason shaw joins me he's playing tomorrow what a game we've got here right now yeah it's been uh it's been a lot of run-outs and a little mistake from josh there in that wreck and uh give chris a little chance and he took those last three balls pretty well that was very unlike josh wasn't it and when that happens because it's rare you've got to pounce yeah you know he's been playing great i think he broke and run like three or four games in a row there um put chris under a lot of pressure so chris has done well to nick that game so he's still in the match and uh anything can happen from anything can happen but chris is sort of showing his form from last night now but also we know that josh phillips comes into this match as a world cup winner yeah you know he's in good form he's always in good form he's always he's always playing well and uh he's a tough tough man to beat and uh you know chris has got a little chance here to get himself back in the match so let's see what happens absolutely it's a great game so far isn't it yes it's good um everybody at home will be on the edge of the chairs they absolutely will yeah absolutely well yeah as we are hey it's 5'3 to joshua filler but chris is back in this game always good to have the thoughts of jason shaw who is a phenomenal potter number nine our current sport is in the mold of this man mr melling to break yeah you can see there joshua with his head bowed down because this match should be over for he's had chance in the last two racks so could have been a seven one winner and instead it's five three chris just broke and he's got a shot at this three ball one two and five already in oh chris [Applause] joshua filler goes for his jump cue the miss from melon but he got a nice roll and i think it's fair to say he probably deserves one so the jump shots gone wrong didn't hit that how he would have liked this is a little tester for chris he's just kind of landed on the 50-yard line cue balls naturally going over towards the eight as long as he can or the top cue ball should come out and leave him some form of a shot on the pink ball yeah that was the problem 824 and that's what we've been worried about his face will tell us all we need to know and on cue there is the grimace so he's got to be careful he doesn't scratch i could see a bit i think you might have jumped over the edge of the nine there not too sure first glance i thought he was swerving the ball big moments in this match now five three joshua fellows five one up just cruising along lovely so chris is playing safe trying to use the eight ball gets a good cue ball and joshua's you can see this ball but he's in a little bit of trouble and what was a stroll in the park most certainly isn't anymore yeah he's playing it slow he's trying to use the eight ball and just get the six over near the side rail i don't think he could get it right over there now yeah he's got a good chance here he's tried to put the six in towards the eight and use the nine ball and the eight there's like a channel of balls to try and get the hook and i don't think he has got the hulk well you can see an extreme edge the kick's very easy off the bottom rail trying to get the cue ball in behind the eight but is it all wrong and this is gonna leave chris mellen a long pot on the six yeah he's got to pop this six probably go three rails try and play the seven in the same pocket this is keyboard to slow down this looks good indeed [Applause] there you see we've got a wonderful view of this seven ball and he's fired it in the pocket it's game on from nowhere just these two balls and you'll be one rack behind and you can trace fillers problems back to the missed three ball when he was free-flowing at five 5-1 5-1 is a distant memory it's now only 5-4 [Music] [Music] [Music] you [Music] england's chris milling is engaging in role reversal in his first match he was 5-1 ahead was pegged back to 5-4 and then pulled away well this time he was 5-1 down joshua phillip missed a couple made a tactical error and now melling is right back in this breaking off in rat 10 in just a moment we've had three first round matches completed this afternoon niels flynn beat jeffrey de luna miescu porchunsky overcame christina to catch and in a hill hill contest dennis grabber from estonia defeated roberto gomez from the philippines as for our last match of the afternoon well wreck number 10. okay after this mr melling to break well he's gone back to his usual break off shot but again he's lost the cue ball trying to pack the cue ball in the center of the table and for a moment what are you going to scratch now i don't think you can see the potting angle maybe you can spin it in must be tight often you see the players just play this shot with left hand spin and that causes the object ball to spin the opposite way so that was well done and well judged joshua filler it doesn't matter what you've won in the game and how good you are this match should have been over and now chris malin is in the balls with a great chance to tie this match up and this is a a cautionary tale filler was playing beautiful pool to 5-1 should have gone 6-1 jawed a three ball down the side rail this side rail actually and ever since melling has been enjoying a second wind yeah that positional shot there looks perfect for chris we'll be playing the nine in the same pocket as the eight and from nowhere this match he's five five indeed we started out as the best of 13. now that's been distilled down to the best of three and right now you have to make milling favorite purely and simply because he's got the break in rack 11. could just about with side squeeze the one ball in and after that it was pretty routine he was on the highest of highs when he won the world cup just a few days ago joshua phillip if he were to lose this match i think he would be quite low because he knows full well it should have been in his pocket yeah 100 last week it was all glory and now he's he's in a battle from nowhere he's at the table it was 5-1 one little miss and then the rack after he made a mess of that rack as well so he's had his chances is definitely on chris's side especially with the break and with his pedigree if melanin can win this match he could go currently tied up the entire world mr melling to break yeah it's going to give him a lot of confidence daisy balls off the break again this takes it on into that top right hand corner possibly could he cut it in the left center i think that's what he's looked at because if he does he's playing for the red three in the top corner that's when chris walked around to have a look it's obviously very thin extension please yep he's playing this in the side pocket cue ball well four rails yeah he's not that good i think he's signaling for a bad contact we'll give chris the benefit of the doubt there until we see the replay what if balls do scared or kick whichever is your preferred terminology they do tend to kick thick so that would support chris milling's theory not that fillers bothered in the slightest call yeah joshua's just being a bit loosed three racks at the table he's just not taking enough care on where he wants to leave the cue ball and he's leaving himself these type of shots [Applause] i tell you what he must be overjoyed that went in we've seen pots actually more accurate than that stay out when is a pot to an intended pocket actually a fluke well maybe there because filler was so close to leaving the seven ball on the table but it just about fell in and because of that he reestablishes the lead at 6'5 [Music] that was undoubtedly brinkmanship [Music] thanks phil yes that was some rack wasn't it jason shaw yeah it was um chris had a skid on the the one ball to start it off and then joshua's kind of got out of line a little bit and nearly missed a seven towards the end of the rack there um a little bit of nerves on on the table going on there is nerves as well what what's your thoughts on the pockets as well obviously the four-inch pockets yeah i think it's uh something good going forward um you know we're professionals so i think we should be playing on there is there for josh as well which we were talking about yeah the seven ball was it was a little um a little nerve-wracking for him when he was watching it going towards the hole but yeah the pockets are good size and i think it's good for the game and as we've said this is the world pool masters so let's have the four inch pockets yeah you know everybody's uh top professional players so we should be playing under the right equipment and um i think it's good like i said there's going to be good going forward yeah top professional players and a top top game going on right now josh phillip is on the hill can he get there come on am i going overboard there on that seven i've seen pots that looked closer than that to me my current score is six to five still the table i'm surprised to break yeah on the hill the thing is when you play pool at a high level you know we we sort of know what we're looking for and how a table should be set open the angle that seven ball went down towards the pocket and the fact that it's a new table was basically just helped it fall and you know also you can have the slate which is going to be set back a bit deeper and at the start of this event emily fraser the md of matron multi-sport we had a big players meeting and she was actually acting like the school teacher he was there phil wasn't she and everyone had some paper and pens and she wanted opinions of the players moving forward this is what these guys do they they want to know what the players want and their opinions so moving forward don't be surprised to see a lot of tweaks and changes back to the match joshua filler with an untimely dry break and it's a chance for chris well i think after the seven and also the skid that's melling endured in the previous rack i think the drive break was calmer yeah i think he was trying to miss the six down play for the four in the center now he's gonna have to play it up into that corner where joshua sat and the four-inch pocket right at the end has made a big difference from that angle when the ball is in the center of the table you just can't afford to hit the rail here you see just flicks the left hand rail and it won't go in from that angle and that wasn't as good that was entirely melling's own fault extension please now this has not been his friend this pocket in this match so he's just taking a bit more time this sixth ball looks like it's the key shot phil of this rack and this match if he pockets this he will be on the seven ball bolognese now is a nice angle on the eight and the cue ball will naturally float over for the nine and it's been a good match it's been an exciting match but it's just a shame the way this match has ended looked like it was going to go hill hill and that missed four ball could have cost mellon this place in this tournament [Applause] this is it joshua fuller his prevailing emotion will be one of relief up to 5-1 that was filler at his best but then he missed a three-ball down the side rail everything changed and at 5-5 well you gave milling a really good chance to go through
