the Esprit Republic come to me and stands for your city hello Johnny hey dude you are next to impossible to reach you know that right who the hell is this it's me honest Biggums I'm sorry oh come on man you remember we were supposed to review Castle Crashers like three years ago we met at too many games last year come on in oh right right all right big gums it's just big ups there's only one word listen man I meet a lot of people when I give them nicknames just so I can remember them but Biggums is already [Music] [Applause] so you're finally ready to get this thing started I don't know man is castle crashers to a thing in 2018 coming from the guy who looked at dragon power a few months ago I don't think relevancy is actually a concern besides Castle Crashers is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year something that you should know all about so I think it's appropriate that we at least give it a look and see if it still holds up well Castle Crashers may be turning 10 years old this year but I've known new grounds since the mid-2000s created by Tom folk it was my go-to spot for catching flash cartoons and music releases from aspiring animators and musicians it was a major inspiration for me during my time at the Art Institute of Philadelphia show me that you don't have to be in a major studio to produce some quality cartoons Castle Crashers is a 2d beat em up game developed by the behemoth who were also responsible for creating the popular flash game Alien Hominid on newgrounds.com there's a name I haven't heard in a while yeah I never played that game myself but I suddenly feel old mentioning it but like Alien Hominid Castle Crashers certainly has the new grounds look and feel to it hey early new grounds look and feel it's quite shameless with grotesque humor and gratuitous violence might be a cup of tea maybe not depends on if you like cats coughing up fur balls or watching animals in the woods [ __ ] their guts out it's a little juvenile but nothing too repulsive if you asked me it's sure to make the kids laugh originally available for Xbox Live Arcade back in 2008 Castle Crashers is since Tina release on the PlayStation 3 Steam and Xbox one in 2015 Castle Crashers also received a remastered update including higher quality textures enhanced performance and a higher frame rate for this video we decided to play that version on Steam Castle Crashers doesn't have much in story much like the beam ups that pays tribute towards there's a party going down the castle one day and our heroes are head-banging and I guess riverdancing is that what it is but anyway suddenly an evil wizard crashes the castle steals the mystical Jim from the king and kidnaps the four princesses of the kingdom as one of the four Knights it's up to you to rescue the four maidens and restore peace to the land yep that about sums it up it's like the classic Mario adventure with a [ __ ] bear it works for this kind of game I think the developers just wanted to make you laugh more than anything else and for a beat of month that's all I really asked for the four Knights aren't much different from one another besides the color they rock and the Ellen they control it's a little confusing too like you would think the red light will control fire instead he controls lightning it's the yellow Knight who controls fire but you would think he would control lightning well at least the blue Knight seems to know what he wants in life as he controls ice and the green light controls the element of poison their magic spells behave a little differently compared to the others but I think it's mostly cosmetic it basically a matter of what you like you like fire you pick the fire at night I like guys so I went with the blue Knight I went for the red Knight for this adventure what really separates your character from all the rest lies in what kind of weapon you wield and what kind of statue focus on Castle Crashers has a degree of role-playing elements to it each time you kill some bad guys you gain some experience and level up you can increase your stats in four areas strength to hit harder magic to increase potency of your spell's defense to take more damage and agility to help you move faster there's also several other characters you can unlock as you play the game and there's even some available as DLC but we didn't bother trying them out for the record but they are there to experiment with if you get tired using the main four we decided to cover the best of both worlds I went with the magic slash defence built while big gums here focused on pure attack power and almost nothing else he couldn't defend himself war [ __ ] yeah thanks jerk but he did get more kills overall because of his physical attacks you have a basic light attack and a heavy attack didn't use the heavy attack a whole lot being honest here despite the name it didn't have that much of an impact in my eyes and I thought it wasn't as effective as light attacks you can spam those to hell him back without too many repercussions there are some enemies that counter that sort of [ __ ] and there are special combos you can unlock as you level up but we both found that mashing the light attack was generally good enough for everything most at a time magic was pretty fun to use and against those stupid-ass fire demons in the volcano area it was damn near essential but against those that absorb its John was as useful as a used condom my physical attacks were next to worthless because I couldn't focus on those stats and I could do nothing but span the projectile maneuver repeatedly until the enemy finally decided to die yeah that that wasn't very fun also did you have to notice that a lot of the enemies seem to have an obnoxious amount of health yes oh my god like it's fun as hell when you lay the combos down whether you're striking them with a sword or zapping them with lightning but when they keep getting back up after like 15 seconds of attack spamming it started to wear thin I get the feeling castle crashes really wants you to play with four players at all time so that you're too lost in the chaos to really notice that sort of thing but when you only have about two players on the screen I think all the damage sponges are more obvious I mean we looked it up at enemy health does scale up and down depending on how many players are available but without that extra kick I don't know a couple of stages seem to drag on because of the number of beefy enemies that are thrown at you boss fights were particularly bad about this I love how most of these guys look at how they're animated but some of them took forever to finish off just a clear cut and there's no questions about how you're supposed to do this or that but because you can only do so much at a given time Jesus they went on and on yeah I remember you taking a little bit to kill the corn boss when I kicked the bucket and couldn't help you out I already used up my last potion at that point so yeah sorry about that it's fine and hate that is something cool about this game with the money you find throughout every stage whether it's from enemy drops with those big treasure chests were to you when you kill the boss you can spend that sexy move on items at the closer shop available on the world map it could be stronger weapons once you're at the appropriate level to wield them it could be some animal friends that give you a different perplexed row experience or it could be a handful of one use items we didn't use much of the bow and arrow in this shovel because quite frankly the bow and arrow doesn't really compare to our magic power and the shovel is only seldom used for burial spots that have extra cash the bombs were okay but again magic ended up being the better option and the sandwiches were okay for a little crowd control and the volcano punching yep none of this was effective as simply spamming attacks or using magic though maybe if you want to challenge yourself in a restricted run but these items are a little too undermined by your basic combos or two situational to get prolonged use out of it we did however buy a crap ton of potions honestly money in this gauge just be called potion funds because they are clearly the best thing you can buy for yourself they fully restore health they automatically revive you if you kick the bucket assuming you're not the last one standing and you can carry up to five of them in some of the longer stages their goddamn required it's possible without potions for the record if your buddy ends up dying you can revive them with CPR and get another chance if you get interrupted though you missed your chance and you're on your own until you bite it very likely to happen since enemies will keep coming on Moss's if you have buddies with you Jesus Christ big comes it's a boulder not a chocolate ball I can't help it man it's hard to get position sometimes well not so much with the horizontal movements but I lost count how many times both of us straight-up whiffed attacks because we weren't properly aligned and with the magic spells that was super frustrating every 2d beat'em up has this problem to be fair it was just that we encountered that problem a lot more here or at least it felt like we did most of the time we ended up using the drop shadows on the floor to figure out where we were and if we were aligned with the enemy it's a workaround sure but I think a more forgiving hitbox would have spruce things up a bit it could be death perception [ __ ] with us too I think the game looks great to get that out there but I feel stuff the field could have been better handled I feel the environments are a little flat in colors at times making the whole picture feel flat this might have been intentional to make sure your attention is fixated on your character so that you don't lose track of them but looking at the bigger picture here yeah I think a little more layering wouldn't hurt as for the levels themselves I thought they were the perfect length with a couple exceptions for the most part they're not too long and not too short and I think they're pretty generous with checkpoints mostly I don't know I thought some of these levels could have been cut in half or maybe by a third the volcano level thought it went on a little long and the sand level / alien invasion level gave me similar vibes I do love the tons of set pieces though they do a great job of making a stage distinguishable from the rest and I appreciate that kind of variety given how inherently repetitious this kind of genre can get still after about two hours I was sort of on autopilot I froze things with my ice projectiles and that was about it the soundtrack here is a bit confusing but not in a bad way some of the levels you'll have an epic battle piece like what you would hear from the movie 300 but other levels are cheerful and full of techno despite the fact that you're slaughtering people as a whole I found myself humming the music in just about every level and in the hub world it's not a soundtrack that I would go out of my way to find but it's definitely enjoyable you can tell that a lot of ambition was put into this soundtrack yeah I thought the music was perfectly fine I especially liked the track called second boss one of the boss tracks my only complaint is that the music doesn't properly loop all the time like it's obvious when the track ends and repeats itself it's very abrupt it's a minor thing and it could be a callback to the game's roots as a flash-based video game but it's something I kept noticing capsule crashes is a good time but I think it suffers when you don't play for players Maximian big guns big guns and I and would you stop calling me that we had a good time we managed to the game in a healthy four hours a little long for a beat him up in my opinion but we were a little weary by the end of it despite the short length Castle Crashers does have other things to do besides the main quest you can beat each other up in a couple of different arenas to prove who has the bigger dick maybe eat some sandwiches and play happy slaps I don't blame you if you're not it's a pretty shallow there's also an archery contest where you can try and Pelt each other with arrows it gets better as you pick up more speed but it's disjointed as hell very back-and-forth it's not that exciting I full of life in me don't understand the back off barbarian minigames what's the point is to avoid enemies as long as you can you press the buttons corresponding to the color surrounding you to move to the next block and I think that's it I think you're trying to avoid enemies and beat the clock yeah I mean it could just be a survival test to see who lasts the longest between friends sure it's just sort of there you know Castle Crashers is best enjoyed with four players max it should be stressed John and I had our fun but we thought some of the problems that we mentioned would have been easily mitigated with two extra buddies so take it from us if you somehow haven't played this [ __ ] get three friends on your side for this I wouldn't recommend playing this solo I just don't think it would be as engaging it doesn't beat out Streets of Rage 2 or turtles in time in my opinion but it's got plenty of merits to warn approaches I believe all the unlockable characters can be good for replay value definitely and there's also harder difficulties if you want to challenge yourself it's 15 bucks normally but I see it at a discount constantly whenever steam decides to do another sale so it helps to keep an eye on this one if you're interested feels good to finally get that done hey thanks so much for letting me join you on this one John hey John you're fighting me I'm sorry what what are you still here like you shouldn't get the hell out say no more hey thanks so much for watching this video guys and I want
