This is how he started a live show: https://youtu.be/S2uMYyAKFvU?t=94
Yeah no reason not to give John Mayer props for being able to emulate and use a style. Music isnβt created in a vacuum.
It's a little funny that Mayer referred to the "housewife set". He's definitely made it there, too.

it's funny how John Mayer mentions hearing SRV's early demos and bootlegs.
I feel the same about John. I started listening to him before Room For Squares, when he put out his first EP. He got some initial buzz among guitarists because of the bootlegs of his small gigs he'd play in Atlanta (example). Even going back and listening to his first live shows when he was basically still a kid it's clear how much talent he had from the get-go.
A friend of mine had tickets to see Eric Clapton at Alpine Valley and SRV was opening. I backed out because I had a family thing that day.
That was SRV's last concert ever.
I've never forgiven myself for missing it.
His point on periodical vs reference is an apt one. You run into that frequently in revolutionary concepts.
The motorola razor was a point in time. The iphone was a reference.
SRV was pretty ridiculous. His technical skill with the blues is just crazy. He was almost not human, more like a mythical god of some kind.
Anyone else have a mini panic attack at the end of the video when the sound went BBRRRVVVTT? Sounded like the computer is about to bluescreen!
