mama closed doors with Joan Lunden in the world of the super-wealthy they are the most sought after luxury yachts on the water they're made by a company called fed ship and come with a price tag up to a hundred million dollars join us as we go behind closed doors to find out why there are yachts and then there are mega yachts these boats can be more than 200 feet long six stories tall and more than 12,000 square feet think of them as floating mansions with a lifestyle to match the Tiffany of yacht builders is fed ship for more than 50 years this Dutch company has designed and built the most expensive yachts on the planet they gave us exclusive entry into this elite world my voyage started dockside in Fort Lauderdale Florida we're waiting for me was the Blue Moon a 165-foot mega yacht for security reasons the owner of this yacht wished to remain anonymous we can tell you he's a very successful American businessman with a distinguished military background I was greeted just as the owner would be by his full-time crew of 10 which includes an engineer stewardesses deckhands a chef a first mate and the ship's captain Emile boots month hi hi - welcome to blue moon beautiful ship here hungry look this is exquisite grandeur I think it would be the word from the bleached walnut woodwork to the floors made of marble from all over the world the custom design interior is as beautiful as any you'd see in a finest State but this is a floating estate and it was time to head out to sea the crew prepped for departure as Captain Emile and I headed for the helm we gonna be able to be in about two seconds this 35-year old native of South Africa has been the captain of the blue moon since its launch in 2000 but ago this is a blue moon as we made our way through the harbor I realized it took a lot of skill just to get this huge yacht out to the open sea the first time you ever took this baby out tell me you didn't have sweaty palms we passed numerous other yachts of all sizes including another fed ship the Highlander that was owned by the late Malcolm Forbes then we approached the bridge that was our gateway to the Atlantic also that bridge oh it has to open for you exactly great that big with a big we 60 feet up from the waterline well no they go up big old boat underneath it as well is a spice mix that barge supposed to get through a barge was taking up almost half the clearance under the bridge the captain now had about a 40-foot opening in which to steer a yacht 32 feet wide you don't have a rearview mirror no it's anything I don't have your people are you know your view mirrors any yacht this size even something as simple as going under a bridge can be a challenge okay so just between you and right now is a pretty tight squeeze right little start well you wouldn't want spatulas no it's an expensive paint job when we finally made it out to the open seas a meal opened it up top speed 16 knots about 20 miles per hour but remember this is a 550 ton ship carrying nine hundred and twenty thousand gallons of fuel it's capable of crossing the Atlantic non-stop our trip would take us a few miles off the coast we're captain a meal prepared to drop anchor these are the anchors right those are the twin Aryan cos its twin anchors yes we have double redundancy and everything so we have two anchors with 500 feet of chain on each anchor the blue moon is the size of a four-story building the lower deck contains the engine room guests in crew quarters the main deck houses the owners living area the ship is run from the wheelhouse on the third deck and the top floor is the Sun Deck this is where you really begin to get a taste of the lifestyle on a mega yacht this the top deck this is it look at this this is absolutely magnificent had its Sun Deck get a barbecue let's just live it absolutely even with the city skyline in the distance the first thing you notice out here is the tranquility it's easy to understand why the owner likes to use this yacht to get away from it all all right let's see the next deck to see the owners living area we went down two levels to the main deck here you step into the kind of luxury only a handful of people ever experience oh and you can see that each room just by the shape of the room that all the carpets everything was handcrafted it's all custom made every ship reflects the personality of its owner this owner obviously appreciates fine art and fine furnishings it's the living room lane slope the blue moon was also designed for gatherings of family and friends in total comfort in fact they're the only people who get to enjoy this yacht although the owner and his family are on board for just 90 days a year he doesn't charter it out when they're not using it and it cost several million dollars annually to maintain the ship when the entertaining is over the owner can go behind these closed doors into his private domain all right the master quarters this way master bedrooms this way yep the gym takes us to the gym that's right Anna's personal gym and then he has his office - with everything that he needs fax computer and the master bathroom the owner's bedroom is as luxurious as any you'd find in a five-star hotel complete with push-button controls for the windows discreetly hidden in what looks like a jewelry box next to the bed oh so in the morning you can look out and see the sunshine coming in right all right and then this is the master bath master bathroom you oh look boy this is pretty extraordinary absolutely on the lower deck there are five additional suites that can accommodate up to 12 guests and the guests on this yacht have some great toys to play with is this one of yours this is one of them more than you can get illusion waverunners waverunners here you've got your own amusement park right here you're on the third deck is where you'll also find something near and dear to the owners heart this handcrafted 23 foot motorboat this is the boss's personal toy yep but these kids don't allow to use it we are not allowed to use it it's just his okay I would call the whole thing his personal toy does he go out of him much oh yes yes every opportunity they say when in Rome so I accepted the owners offer to take a spin in his favorite motorboat you need my help zipping around the ocean in this boat was quite a contrast to the 165 foot yacht great this smaller boat can turn on a dime and with each wave it feels like you're airborne as we slowed down and circled the blue moon I was able to get a new perspective from a distance you have to really step back from her to start appreciating just the grandeur of it that's right yeah so you really get a good impression of help makes these when you stand up they're heading back toward the yacht it occurred to me that I could really get used to this kind of life honey we're home
