the last few days in christ's life on earth are filled with intriguing and profound meaning the palm sunday ride into jerusalem on an unbroken borough or the last supper gethsemane the the place of crushing his arrest his mockery of a trial and the false accusations that were made against him a close friend's betrayal the crowd demanding for the release of a murderer named barabbas rather than him his beating at the whipping post with the cat of nine tales his crucifixion and the crowning event the crowning jewel of radiant power and extravagant love the zenith of all events resurrection from the dead having purchased salvation having having paid in full forgiveness of sin for all who would ever ask with his own sinless life's blood we cannot possibly mine all of this out in a brief sunday morning service but one thing stands out to me this year in the last 40 or so years i've tried to find at least one nugget in this special this special season that that is emphasized this year is the fact that no member of the godhead had ever died the creator of living and and a thriving universe the author of life himself was going to now experience death there are those that that think well salvation is just too too simple i mean you mean all we have to do is ask for forgiveness and and say we want jesus to be our lord and to many that seems well that's just too simple but please know today it was not simple it was very very complex it is simple from our side because god wants every man woman boy or girl ever born to be able to look at him and say you are ultimately fair you are ultimately fair and just and if there are consequences for my sin you are still just and fair because you made it easy enough for anyone to understand they could be free they could be redeemed all they had to do was ask the godhead is a unified trinity father son jesus and holy spirit they they had been in a forever oneness of purpose with each other never separated not even for a millisecond but that was going to be changed now and it would be tested by the forces of lucifer the the forever loser the plan was this god was going to place on jesus the iniquity of all who had ever been born all humans ever born on planet earth he was going to place it on him on a cross of crucifixion and his sinless life would pay the ransom for every other life my sins your sins the sins of all human beings he was made to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of of god in him he he who knew no sin it says in romans was made to be sin for us now here's a ver a very bothering part of this for the godhead and yet their unconditional love pushed pushed them to to do it justice demanded this because of the ugliness of sin put on jesus father god would have to turn his back on him that was very bothering i mean god couldn't look on him if he sinned god would have to reject him and look away if he became sin meaning jesus would be separated from the father for the first time in all of you of eternity there would there would be a vacancy in the godhead holy holy spirit would have to brood over an empty throne in protection along with the angel armies probably the archangel michael sin would mar christ's beauty and this was going to change everything it would change everything in the universe it would change things in heaven it would change things on the earth it would change things in the godhead it would change it would change angel armies it would change things in demon armies and it would produce though it would produce the possibility of change in every human being it would give them a choice they could receive forgiveness of sin by simply asking and if they asked they would be instantly changed and it would trigger the creative ability of god which we know he is what a creator he's a lifer he has brought so many things to life he's birthed so many things it would it would trigger his creative ability and life would surge into everyone who asks a miraculous a miraculous suddenly would happen a miracle we call new birth which spring forth they could be born again what a miracle now again christ taking our sins in his own body on calvary's tree then dying for those sins would have caused him to be separated from god and there lies the greatest difficulty i believe for christ that separation from god is what bothered him the most as i as i've studied this for years now i think it bothered him the most he even brings it up while he's on the cross of all the things you would think he'd be thinking about i mean there was plenty to think about his mind must have been racing imagine that's you and in many ways it was he's your substitute but imagine what you might have been thinking how your mind must have it would have raced it was on his mind on the cross saying hello i hello i lama sabachthani my god why have you forsaken me it it was happening he knew it he was becoming sin for mankind for the first time ever he did not feel the presence of his father he knew it instantly he felt it instantly he was so sensitive so sensitive so connected to the father so connected to the holy spirit that he instantly felt the disconnect much as probably adam and eve had felt the disconnect when they sinned in the garden but jesus shows us the possibility of being connected to the father's will and the father's presence at all times if sin doesn't disconnect it that of course was the original intent of father god of the godhead from the very beginning walk with me talk with me commune with me be forever connected to my presence to my will to my purpose that was the part for god that was the purpose connectedness stay connected i think this is why gethsemane was so agonizing for jesus i mean yes of course he knew the cross was going to be painful he was not naive he certainly knew the whipping post would be horrendous of course he knew that but his his being separated from the father seems to be what bothered him the most that was the essence of his being that was the inner core of who he really was his identity that that was his passion that that love alignment had forever flowed unbroken without it for the first time ever he felt empty he was empty of the presence of god and while that separation would be brief until his blood could be placed upon the mercy seat in heaven and while he knew and trusted holy spirit's ability and power to raise him from the dead on the third day he was in great anguish over being separated from the father even for a little while and even asked in the garden of gethsemane is it possible for this cup to pass from me father is there another way is it possible it's almost as like he is he is saying to the father have you have you found out a way to get me out of this is there another way nevertheless not my will thy be thy will be done jesus knew the plan not he knew it well he knew the will of the father he knew all the details of what was going to take place and he also knew that for a man who was forever separated from god because of sin he knew for humankind to be changed he had to endure the separation he was the bridge he he he could change the the fallen nature of humanity he was the bridge that could bring back man into unity with with almighty god he was the answer to the disconnect he was the connection he was the change agent the divine change agent for every man woman boy and girl he a a divine being he a part of the godhead he a divine king an equal part of the godhead became flesh that's a miracle you can ponder a long time it's not simple became flesh to change things and reactivate god's dream from the very beginning they had made man in the image and the likeness of father god had placed man and the woman created from the heart rib of adam they had placed them in a magnificent garden one god made we can't even fathom what that must have looked like i've been in some very beautiful gardens can you imagine the one god planted and made one like no other and father god would would come and he would walk the garden with adam and eve and they experienced god's presence uninterrupted god was going to have his dream of millions millions and millions of sons and daughters to share all of his his creation with but we know that man was deceived by lucifer rebellion disobedience came into the human condition and was passed on through a fallen nature and sin separated man from god man would now live alienated from god man would now live separated man would feel alone and man would feel what jesus felt on calvary's cross empty no god presence empty of purpose empty man experienced what the bible calls a spiritual death and spiritual death by definition in the scripture simply means separated or separation from god there was only one way to change it it's not like there were many ways it's not like there were options there was only one way to change this a member of the godhead had to die only one of the trinity had life valuable enough to pay for the sins of the whole human race only one it had to be one of them no other choice jesus more than 2 000 years ago now stepped onto the stage of human history as a god member as bridge builder messiah redeemer sacrificial lamb why to end the separation to end it he came to change everything he came to change what the separation had caused he came to change the forsakenness he came to fill the emptiness he came to heal the heartaches he came to change the miserable feeling of lostness that's how the greek language defines it lostness you ever been lost i've been lost a few times it's a horrible feeling to be lost but lost of soul lost of purpose he came to change the haunting feeling of aloneness he came to change the mystifying feeling of of unknown purpose i don't know why i'm here i don't know why i exist i don't know he came to change the maze of wandering through iniquity that leads to one dead end after another after another after another and he lights up a path showing the way to new purpose and destiny he came to change that hopeless feeling of abandonment he came to change the disconnect and reconnect reconnect us to the father separation from god and the spiritual death it causes i think it can be understood by the separation that natural death and the separation natural death calls us 25 years or so ago now this was made very real to me in an unexpected way my son josh he he'd begin to play football for his school and yet he didn't have his driver's license yet so we would have to go after football practice to you know to pick him up and i didn't mind i like to go and kind of watch the end of the practice especially if they're you know they're scrimmaging and so i had gone to to pick him up and and this particular day they weren't scrimmaging um they were just running through some plays that kind of boring so i just decided i will take a walk around the track the back side of the track and then over the side of the track there was a woods and i saw a path and i thought okay i'll just i'll just take a walk because he's gonna end practice take a shower it's gonna be a while and i would walk through that that woods there was a little stream there it was a nice path i walked along it i did this several days and uh one day i saw the path kind of led up a hillside i thought what's over there so i walk up this hillside and it opened up into a cemetery and i walked i thought well okay i walked started walking through the cemetery and i saw a man drive into the cemetery and pulled around kind of close to where i was but not real close that i could see him i saw him get up or get out of his car go to the trunk of the car raise it and he took out a lawn chair and he carries the lawn chair over to a grave opens the lawn chair up and he sat down in the lawn chair at that grave and i thought well this must be pretty recent you know it's uh it's kind of unusual but not so much and i didn't pay a lot of attention to that and i walked on back but the next day i did the same thing and this same car same man pulled in took out the lawn chair and he sat at this grave now i'm really getting curious the next day it happens again and i'm walking i don't want to get too close i don't want to intrude but this is this has got my attention and i walked around and there was a groundskeeper there who was working on this cemetery ground and he noticed the man and noticed that i noticed and he said to me he comes every day about this time he sits for a half hour or he sits there maybe for an hour he does it every day and i i walked over the trees and i i just watched him from a distance but i couldn't help but think i wonder why he's doing this did he promise that he would do it so many days did he promise to sit with his wife was that a a grave a deathbed promise i don't know was he sitting there he was he thinking about was he thinking about dreams that obviously were not going to happen there was some kind of change going to happen was he pondering the changes this was making in his his life or maybe the life of his family or maybe even his vocation he he was trying to make sense out of something he was trying to to get his bearings concerning something and i i couldn't help but note there's an air of hopelessness about this scene i could feel it he was obviously working his way through a very difficult time and i also couldn't help but notice the utter empty feeling in this man i mean the way he walked just looked dejected he sat there in a aloneness and the picture was clear the separation was agonizing it's a hollow empty feeling never did never did discover or find out the story behind that scene but i have never forgotten it it comes up in my consciousness every now and then and i couldn't help but think about this man's search to feed to fill an emptiness the search to fill the lost the search to end and heal life's traumas the search to feel to fill the the soul's hollowness the search for a way to end a feeling of despair some way to reconnect my soul to life some way to reconnect with father god the source of life somehow that somehow is in all human beings because it's all there somehow there's a knowing there's a void in me that only god can fill only god i need a divine being to change this i need god to life me i need god to re-life me jesus came jesus came so the emptiness could be filled with life the tomb today is empty so man's emptiness can be filled he came to turn graves into gardens the soul can dream again the soul can bloom again the soul can be a garden god walks in again he came to bring forgiveness of sin to all who would ever ask he came to heal the brokenness he he came to birth a new soul and spirit in those that have been separated from god he came to reconnect us to to the father of mercy the father of life the father of unconditional love he came to end the feelings of abandonment aloneness emptiness hollowness he came to reconnect us to walk with god again and he came to connect us to the presence of god that we can live in without interruption forever having sinned dealt with whether it's that one today who needs salvation and a new birth or whether it's that one who has been born again but soul piercings have come their way their heart and their soul has been struck and they've leaked life and they're empty jesus came to reconnect us to life to reconnect us to live again he paid the full price for our freedom he paid it on calvary's cross and on the third day god raised him from the dead to verify it reconnecting him once again to the godhead receding him on the throne as king of kings and lord of lords and today we can know him as a risen savior today we can know him as a personal lord today we can know him as the life giver we we today can know a life restore whosoever will whoever no no one is excluded male female every race every cover color every one whosoever will may come and have their life reconnected to god you don't have to live separated you can live in his presence as a son or as a daughter like for the praise team to come if they would perhaps today there are those in this room you've been wounded in that soul you've been pierced life hands of some very difficult things i was thinking about this in the life of jesus himself because it's one thing to know the separation of of the father and that would be so bothersome but he carried for us through that emotional traumas in life say what would that be for jesus i think when he was in his mid-teens somewhere his earthly father joseph died we don't know why but there was a point when jesus stood beside his mom at a grave site with his brothers and sisters and they felt that separation they felt that trauma on their soul he knew what it felt like but he was willing to go and and pay the price so that healing could come and restore your soul [Music] he knew it in the natural he knew it in the spirit he paid it all but perhaps today you feel that loss that aloneness [Music] in your soul or perhaps today you are in this room and you've never made jesus lord of your life well then you are separated from god but you don't have to be the good news is you don't have to be he did the hard part if you'll just ask would you forgive me of my sins and i want you to be lord of my life that will trigger a miracle in you life will start to flow through you and you can change i did many people today in this room did thousands watching today did why not you would you stand please all over the room if you're here and you're experiencing that soul [Music] piercing time yeah i've been through it i the trauma was real and i just yeah i feel that [Music] today and i need my soul healed i want you to just just raise your hand wherever you're at and we're gonna pray okay so many it's it's life now [Music] are there those in this room that say yeah i need to ask for forgiveness and i need to make jesus lord would just raise your hand say yeah that's me okay good good back there let me see it don't be embarrassed i did it good good good good many this is going to be the greatest day of your life what about you watching today is it you i can't see your hand raised but i'll tell you this our god can see it maybe you're sitting in your living room maybe you're driving your car just just if you'll just even start to race it you'll get the attention of the king of heaven it's why he came miracles can happen [Music] let's do it this way everyone bow your head and repeat after me and those of you that have the trauma of the soul just pray along everybody's going to pray i will and if you've never confessed jesus as your lord we're going to do that right now and if you believe in your heart what we are saying you mean this he will come today a miraculous suddenly will happen inside of you and everything will begin to change doesn't change overnight so much but it begins to change and you go and life begins to become different and you feel that connectedness to the father repeat this after me father god [Music] i come to you today through your son jesus i thank you jesus for dying for me dying to heal the trauma life hands me coming to restore my soul [Music] and fill the emptiness do a miracle in me today [Music] and father god i believe you sent jesus to die for me jesus thank you for dying i ask you to forgive me of all my sins and i ask you to be my lord and my savior and from this day forward [Music] i will boldly confess [Music] that you're my lord you're my savior change me any way you want use me any way you want from this day on i will declare i'm a christian amen amen amen thank you lord thank you lord [Applause] [Music] thank you lord because of our life in christ he's our redeemer we have a right to come to the table of the lord the communion table and we'll move into that now ushers if you will [Music] come to your stations there may be those of you that when you came in you did not receive this little cup if you did not would you raise your hand many of you did we tried to serve you on your way in and those of you that are watching you may want to go and get juice or cracker or bread and participate together with us before the arrest of jesus we know he spent that night with his disciples and there they received what many call the last supper it's really not we're going to have another pretty good one but we know what they meant and there he passed around the elements of communion and he took bread he broke that bread and he said this is my body broken for you and we know that broken body was for our healing healing spirit soul and body even healing of diseases he took them at the whipping post by his stripes isaiah said the stripes on his back we are healed and so today as we partake of the bread together if you need healing ask him ask him to heal you receive it that covenant he ever lives he's alive today to honor that covenant this bread is his body would you break it and then partic uh partake together oh with me please [Music] we thank you [Music] thank you for going to the whipping post thank you for every stripe let healing flow [Music] to everyone god [Music] that healing spirit soul and body come thank you thank you [Music] then he took the cup and he passed it around and he changed centuries of history [Music] when he made this statement this cup is the new testament new covenant in my blood it represents that shed for the remission of sins it was going to change everything no more atonement of sin no more covering it we're changing all of that in just a couple of days he was saying i'm going to take him away forever you're never going to have to be remembered i'm going to throw them as far as the east is from the west i'm going to initiate a new covenant in my blood and you're going to be forever free never to be remembered against you again and so today we partake of the cup reminded of the new covenant that his blood purchased and all that it paid for [Music] so let's partake together please thank you that your blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness thank you lord the past is severed from us and we are free [Music] we're not entangled in the yoke of bondage [Music] when you forgive it's done thank you lord [Music] for removing our sins and our transgression
