Jerry and Jo-Ann Saddleback: Traditional Concepts of Family and Community

[Music] you one of the things that we learned is that our old people tell us that it doesn't matter what issue you're talking about whatever is on people in First Nations people you are always talking about culture but that's how huge it is then it doesn't matter what we're talking about there is a cultural response to it and this also contains on families how we raise our children what are the components of our families how is it that we get together as men and women how would we create those health and relationships in our communities what is it that we're missing in our communities I mean one of the documents that we're so proud of is under are you familiar behind her it's the United Nations declaration on indigenous peoples and in there it declares that we have a right to an education in our own language in our own culture somebody had that level got it but they understood how big it is one of those important things I'm doing is that look for must be cheese cultural colleges that they they contracted me to write a declaration on pre-language plans pre language one of the things that I had to do in this was to consult with a lot of elders a lot of Alice in that and they told us that we've reached the stage of grandparents who know who don't speak creep we always used to go to our grandparents our great auntie for for anything we wanted to know in that language now we no longer and that so many of us are now learning Cree language a second language and they say when you learn a language is second language you're always going to miss something you're always going to miss something and now as you can what very precious things that we do miss oh it's okay here here the white thoughts into pen don't mine at all and the Z me we're going to talk about families okay how is it that we put together those families how to rapport with one another when does a family start becoming a family what are those rights passages that were missing what should be doing for a little baby when they're when they're first conceived and that's what my husband is going to talk about he is the elder in residence and the Dean of cultural studies that must be choose cultural college he also works very closely with Omaha urban Aboriginal people he sits on some committees for the City of Edmonton and they are doing a really good job of that reconciliation and connecting that have original people in the city and I'm really happy to see so many people here I get really nervous I have no nervous miss at all and I'm talking to people I don't know but when I see a whole bunch of people that I do know I kind of get kind of dismissive good so I'm going to hand this over to Jerry Saddleback now okay [Music] Oh but anyway really grateful to all of you don't you to see so many friends that that and relatives Frank over there and different ones I got friends all where you go and um you know different Leslie Greg very directly in the past oh good it's one year we did another this gets the title of hitting of this session is boring the terms of the area family when you say family within that own we're thinking in our things we thought rooms just as we used to be ski from you know that perspective and it's always and uh I guess you can say pre-contact from the pre-contact arrow then that's called II look at it be that it's uh we're still like there's snow any relatives winter things so we used to we used to go through long for different uh you know versions of the language street winter lenses are in a circular encampment for four different locations within the encampment you have four TVs you know going simultaneously via the night telling your story with several items of course you know I've been taking over each other within like the intro a portal traditional for how you instill in your memory bank a permanent place where the information to you know to eventually be passed on to future generation kind of a thing so we hung our ways of to talk about some of these things that we you know whatever they feel that they learn from each other part of that camp that they're walking from with VR sometimes what I do is I try to rotate sometimes I feel like a little worm of the intro intrusive sound such if they followed the high school story and where you have a general version the sky aquatic means you're adding some more into that picture and then you have the blocking which is not presented with you several days at a time four days four nights up with the intial version they say that's not watching what they called it father of the universe and we call he deliberately names himself a sixth a month or so a month or is odd compassionate I'm not trying to get a can and then you have the mother of the universe say month old squirrel compassionate woman so we have those within that culture of pre-contact Iran the older it was the older elders that really passed the story on to us odd really because I already did those older generation that were one hundred and twelve hundred and twenty three hundred and twenty one to one hundred and sixteen year old ladies and other ones like that that passed this dispersion on already called these other elders younger elders and those younger elders were 80 and 90 years old and these guys were like way over a hundred indeed they had kinda liked it virtually zilch experience as far as out you know I guess you could say that the colonized lifestyle its kind of its kind of like pre-contact be right that's where they came from that originated in there why I say that as many of them were deliberately going away from my staying away from colonization physically going around physically staying as far as it but why you know we do you have all we don't email all of the reasons why I'm pretty sure of the history of that colonization figure so but anyway one of the main reason why this what's doing maintain the purity of that is you can save those purest ways of doing things that story itself which we call it a long but long story that kind of thing is all of these different thing to a maintenance of that pendant to make a very good future generations in and another chorus on there is also on these other people that during that time that we're within the midst of colonization and you know I must read the same time and but they were traditional people but they went underground with this information what are the reasons one of the other reasons why of course you saw well for several generations on there's different things like our ceremonies were forcefully stopped and everything like that when you see ah the Sun you know the Sun Dance itself sometimes we'll see up sticks around there and every now and then these elders will put down their to stick and take that Island and that's done in the memory of the ones that passed on that didn't want to use those lounge rooms because they are scared of what they call redcoats to come and tear up there tonight their ceremony here so those are different kinds of things that were happening so what was taking place with some there is that physical you know people that were physically away from them that type of comment and the ones that went underground with it and for several generations uh when the ceremonies were stopped by the time some of these are our relatives trying to pass this information on them back to their I guess you could say now colonized relatives the ones that they map out some solid zinc they say that means they came up in today into a midst of colonization but in fact they tried to tell their downfall minds relatives that we we have our own long story in our only traditional ceremony things like that doubt they said that the other one said that voila I found a different way I've been converted to another no way of the lead from the other side of the world it's the same God so you know basically that's what the and the kind of answer to that so from nearly this more or less stuff company we are the code we are this means this within there nuclear family who ever cared to learn their kids to eventually negotiate indeed maintained had been tilted that but and that's reason why when I went on that five-year journey without Confederacy of 26 I asked me to go in live I will get that information of the purity about and elders I believe from 1876 as far as on what they really believed in on what the treatise was about it was during that time when I discovered that we only had a handful of elders then you done the long story we did the entire area that's why that we say they were a number made the numbers remain small because of that the baby to think oh so those are some of the kinds of things that we've have to be mindful of in especially we've done some of you younger generation that are and whatnot to maintain awareness you know what that you need to address in that matter so it's with that we as we say mother of the universe father at the university so ladies and gentlemen we actually have a mother of the universe according to that story and not wanting to other people to witness a month or compassionate time not one more man said he's it done he went like this he said down who could be more compassionate than the giver you have everlasting cycle of light and said he said we could just say God to him said but that he deliberately called himself compassionate kind bud so that's why we we addressed in our claim to be and then we have not only that but we have a child of the universe so that's the store that's how far back we own people they did our own people they take it that far as far as that history the pre-contact history concerned with and in our language we have what they call the holy language or the sacred crease you want to call it high pre that kind of thing we have that kind of a crease in language they call it God but stick to it with language persecutory like what is that so within that particular language we have a word born out of that from that family because he wanted the kidster he wanted to show the rest of his universe that feels about them create the holiness and sacredness that's concept of the word when we say that my son-in-law studies the etymology of our clothes were in spirit we were in trying to tie in some of them the key words that come from his culture associating that the similarities like one similar one example of that similarities are the word they have for pyramid they were powered on it's the same word that we have for the description a descriptive word for the word pyramid so those cards some of the kinds of things that he tries to connect this word you know that that their culture and our culture the similarities of them so he was the one that said that expects I hate still no word that he'd come across that starts out with a singular and enter the plural we have figure slower on some of the linguists hotel probably know what I'm talking about but it's the word we have her family I am so that family there in that him in that concept that's where it starts from it then you table as far as that teaching of that the home is within that circle encampment and we have what they would turn on a story that an excerpt if you want to call it you do our that's how we say except in Crete from that it's taken one little chunk of it from that it's just recent story down what it is it's on this fun nearly just started talking about the reason of the children where the creator after he seen that there was this uh when we would turns up in our have our own story with indigenous let's figure out you know the other day we came up with God my wife and I came up with the dictionary in a word other than the indigenous it's the people that were you know like the trouble and they're near that part of them and that's what it means instead weird stuff it's a word that of that nature but in our language we will say we defeats we follow me no I mean I'm a defense that humbly stuff Purdy's itself it comes from the earth this very here this one so we have that story of that history even though the location are when people talk about locations about sacred landmarks we have that location so that this so but God little further today we had this story about again you know God how when he stepped over the creator's natural law the Creator now decided that that he's going to lend them the children in our language a he Holly had his choked his first children that they're going to happen so with that they uh they called that child in are able to lose a child it should be called child in our language Oh how to spend a word over here are we old sewing which means that which was loan to you if that was loan to you in the most holy sacred way but we go so it that's what that means and over here is this part of the word sequences which means little sky being a child means a signal system so those are connected in that way so they they are back in them day he literally raised his children like little sky beans which they were in double in the belief system that we have on the god came here so how they were placed here so it's like that that that they they take it from that that so he very specifically prescribed to that first couple how they were supposed to raise their children very and the poster really and that one those types of fun that one there takes out just drink talking about just the growing years of the child all they're talking about is one thing and that is the creator is you know prescribing to them right from the time of conception people and stomachs collars on them there are several words that they use for that right there up the first time earliest conception all the way to the time when the child reaches that age of maturity that groaned in their mature years right there forgot for a woman that would be approximately twenty years old the age of maturity and I don't mean to step on your males pose but that for a male it's about 30 years old mines according to bully catch on right away match I guess it's that twenty or twenty years old what that interest that I was old ladies that you know we talked about one girl I recorded at 112 and really she was one there were 11 years old she was 123 old people you know we were lucky to see them to witness them and they running around inside and outside towns at that age knowing that doing stuff not not slow oh you know like slow that I passed my mom honored exercise room and daily moderate exercise movement no commentary table daily like that and that didn't die upon didn't die about sickness either they announced their death so those are these these groups of others that about some of them coming from that dynamic that I think you said that if you see could see that so instead when we've been done once or died in the wilderness and thing is as long as the equipment so it's these all people those some of that fear stories that in godly when they're talking about some of those thinking in that line that's why we refer back to them the reason for that a long time it's right one of the reasons why this is because we are we try to get the extra directly from them from that individual and that's why we kind of give you an idea on some of those individual and the name of that individual that kind of thing is sound anywhere from him and couldn't be any word from mother an introversion to our silent version try to I guess basically translate that add it into its literal form that's what I'm why are we at times named them have them they don't get to get a chance to give them it's in our language it's really it so it's a form of perspective you want to call it down to only name them very like a few times kind of thing it's not at that instill which I will you know give me that villages but I think so we don't video I'm like named I've ever done hit on every now and then so we try to take that type of belief system so it's like that down when we talk about that those earlier stages in that we're saying with them that hum when he talked to them in our language we say uh that that who is spice stage as we college from that very earliest that's another way of calling it there's different stages of life with it the moon that they talk about these elders are and each one of those Thetas are the moon stages of that the child has a child is growing inside the womb and all of those who stages have the word I had that heart ie in it which starts out with the word I see no I see no means a human being so right at that first earliest conception we already have I dare say that that we had that very earliest stage so it's not like you know if I was a doctor maybe not up here in university or someplace and I had a camera on them and I started at three months old I started poking at them and end up and they make all these funny faces and stuff like that night yeah three months oh yeah he's human now that kind of thing it's not like that it's just right at that stage at the earliest stage we are where we begin that because we have what they were Germans are very super sensitivity words there's words that we have within our language but culture itself like they say on the prophecy that the old people say is that in the future time to come people from this island are going to and the people that come from the other side of the island on the other side of the world they would have come to an understanding on some of these things of their culture and some of those terms that was the prophecy that they had and now I think sometimes I think we're getting kind of little closer to that stage like this word for example there's kind of the way we understand that word is this word [Music] it's a super sensitivity stage front right from the time of the earliest conception all the way to eight seven seven years old a very simple pick up any kind of a vibe not only from the mother but trim the dad and I think so the old lady I she was a hundred and twenty feet only reported at hundred and twelve we've done again you don't kind of like that it's each old people they're joking wouldn't anybody else a in a while I feel so young you know their 11-year job that kind of thing but right there she's talking about certain things like this word here and she tells it I cannot express to you enough young people a lot of that super sensitive stage that they're in right now he said that he cannot express that enough how insensitive that stages where they pick up vibes and of any kind of a vibe another old man I will try to describe it a Shoshone elder they have a have the word for that the same similar kind of a word for that within his name was Tom we saw David and they had a words that were similar to that and my dad he also had a word that my late father had as far as on to surpass even the intellectual level of comprehension of an adult surpasses that we have a word for that he highways come on that's the word that they use a highway stuff is likely surpass that level of intellectual capacity at that stage they never saying these old people some of you might have heard about so many nice thing you know like that you know they you think a lot suddenly in history she goes secular that's that over here he said we'll be Healy sticking ot their intellectual level very partial very redundant but the belief there is that we as parents here whether we aware of it or not was what she was saying be happy throw in the mouth they happy toe in the Malaya it will give me that have which with job I guess you could say talks about all of the things that were the main ingredients that were made up as human beings in that in and it's a sacred writing some of you might be aware of it it's called syllabics it's got four columns by nine rows the four columns are near we are what the four bodies people that's what we call and the nine rows representing the nine months of development the wholeness and how we eventually are born into this you know we start with Mother Earth the grounded mother so those are believe sir that we haven't done all of those things in which were made up they're not beings all separate beings within themselves they're there if you notice that charters where is symmetrical symmetrically that symmetry means they're not connected because of that this physically symmetrical is an indication of how connected they are with the whole universe out there very rigidly one of those out is by the way a lot in the end up like those the people that had taken this dissuading away from us and trained with what happened was they took the front row and put it back there and that that's symmetrical nature what our own people thought about that was not in perfect order of symmetry when we say symmetrical our latitude in that order [Applause] [Music] [Applause] can you read it disco disco type of thing it's likely it's medical terminology sometimes you'll see the medical books constipate that what it is is with us it's enough capacity to that's part of the oral tradition where we able to learn they call it them both away who is the etymology of that though I think and then the etymology of those language are you know how we I guess you can say die except into its derivatives and that kind of thing so but these are these symbols the periodical chart of elements okay you studied it in an in a you know I guess you could say very simplification simplified way the only difference between our elements and those elements that you've studied is different ours are alive are very much alive and each one of these elements are not only that but that we didn't hear we have other governments now when there's 100 and some odd elements within you know that today's we think either that's a science knows it modern science know it but with us it's there again it's different we have our own story our Allah the universe incidentally they are I heard they found just two other recent elements in a little bridge so but anyway that's what that and then when you see these are 36 but when you add another one on today's times 13 that but not only that you start doubling the characters don't adhere and then they start adding them into varying combinations of those double dominant since you strapped up in them so that's part of that the whole people story but each one of these and these according travel people it's like that a little baby with their own soul over here they say it's under the sole here right there and that soul belongs to us that's that's you according to other people that's awesome and miss your body is made up of all of these supernatural beings all symmetrically connected to each other in the universe they're like that period and that's it there's the symmetry and that's that word that explains this if the disco disco diabetic you have that order of symmetry in that humans do so those are so many concepts that we know as far as our people are traditional people in the pre-contact era of our belief system how we knew sacred writings and today some of them they call my really horribly fix or no different some symbols like that so but anyway it's through this person this tie being now they they start talking about that 22 own people they're stages of development within that sky being that need to be nurtured back in them days they were able to you know within data decided version that they knew for several generations they knew that and then that's reason why we had ceremonies because those those certain rituals and ceremonies where our institutions of knowledge that you want those were our pleasure center today in normal today within an academic institution that you see around you you had three basically different types of learning that the who you what you have your economy different learning your psychomotor and your effective learning those three types of learning that they talk about we're not with us we have a fourth quadrant of learning there's such a spiritual learning that's the part we have that Southwood scape them out on the Apollo that's a spiritual learning of course that we have and but all of those are intertwined interconnected with each other they're not they're inseparable but these are they're all like candy they're connected to each other in that way you have a very orderly connection to each other and that's why that developmental process has to be one of the balance it couldn't be like cognitive over here maybe within our society maybe we'd have cognitive ninety percent maybe over here no cognitive and maybe psychomotor over here maybe eight percent maybe you know trying to be nice about it but guess what's left over here emotional learning 2% see that's what we mean we don't have that we have a very orderly balanced way of looking at that picture of all of these quadrants that I've said feed into it with a very sound setting of this effect on it call it down the parameters of the dictates of the creator's natural ground that's how we raise the children from that is that matter so these are certain Hannah divert an intro teaching [Music] we have we both drink a diet of course you do but even at badges so but anyway we are when we go into that story of that dead balance such take forward within that of how you're treating each other the word say month-old compassionate kind on that word so so fulfill that child with kindness and compassion you know as the child is growing even though the power and energy of that word out people say that if you focus maybe on a tendency to kind of like focus that more sway towards that a little more in your upbringing style how people say it's so powerful emotional well-being and raising a child the wrist takes care of itself that's the same that they have these other quadrants PT here themselves that's not powerful then that system to me you know when you talk if you talk to a educator about the curriculum specialist or something it boggled my life forever and it's kind of the gaff it's another that's an incredible patch but it's not not impossible I think there is a few people who are a couple people from UCLA that tried it but they still haven't got any we'll try to at least try to figure it out the thing yeah they're back from back in the 80s they are still not there they still happen [Music] but with us it's in our language it's built into our interconnected within our language and we have that that's part of that the world tradition that we have in fact with this this this thing here these are separate sounds guttural sound and the guttural sound stay provider are like the names of the beings within the supernatural beings that are encompassed throughout the universe and how they're connected with it minutes ago I know that it was after the boat we're near so that that's part of our you know I guess you could say kind of like skeletal framework kind of understanding of that you know we couldn't give you a little you know synopsis of what picture cut about from a holistic viewpoint look like so that's the way people and but it's these things you when you start bringing the box until one time I had caught a high school class you know and we have a white board and high school classes that one kid back there James he put up hate sweating a lot dealing I kind of like that can be right down 1 million for me [Laughter] but he done really he told me read it there are no you should but you know it's like this extent kind of like a big kind of a same kind of mathematical system that they have like ten fingers tens and we actually brought back from a no picture company it's always me that you know that that tends and how we figure out our generation system and the universe from that only you know connect ourselves with that I guess you could say the measurements of the cyclic order of the universe from the history of creation story would allow our that this with that story to connected along with that so that when we say children and within their different stages one of the things there that they stress with a male-female they have a court courtship [Applause] remember they're talking about this mother and father of the universe and child on the universe that the things of that well they would literally stay with the each other until one physically drops that's how long they would have to say to each other as part of that law talk about and you know what they're allowed to you know if they want to remarry but they were allowed to the court at least a year some go for two years and of course some go for four years of you know in this you could say more a mourning period weekend healed itself and then after that the group anyway when they say about that time when we talk about the tortured see they here's a four-speed over here that first out there be a thief it was sold I guess you could say on it was it's so detailed that long story that they were specialists that specialized in the word for it we side with that in some of the lobbies and one of these lobbies you had one that's recited from conception to 870 you know they're talking about is one thing how does a mother and father raise that child probably time but using these four quadrants we're talking about they do that they're talking about that are four stages the last window people they say talked about the entire four stages that lived on lived in them did one day in on that area we call it at that such of sunshine our their child from here Thaksin approximately from eight years old to puberty puberty a long time ago of course was uh according to those these old ladies we had a grandma there from my mother's side was 116 years old I got that wooden she was on the wheelchair but she could share herself around real fast and washing dishes and everything but her cousin Nancy Smith very formal names these are full what that created man she smashed she was also 116 but that one ran around inside notes right doubts pretty well he wouldn't stop really Beverly sleep it up and everything anyways it was those those old ladies there that no told us about some money you know how you raise these children this one was fun from seven to Concepcion I mean on conception to 7 and from 82 approximately 17 years old for a female back in them days but in their days according to these old ladies were platinum your to be the age was 17 yeah and this old man that shook my hand my grandpa another 21 year old grandpa shook my hand it we could see it on the light that it on you can kind of see it go whiten it and it slowly goes red then shook my hand like that in here hey he looked like there there he kind of hit the red back like that no see he laughed at me you know what he was laughing at I boo-booed before I reached the age of 30 years old that's what he was talking about so these old people they say that age of maturity for it that's why they say for a male 30 years old age of maturity for female 20 back in them date his vocal cords never changed till he was 17 and today not Bishop will they want to know to know who these guys are little boys found their vocal cords with 12 years old you know the vocal cords are chained what's going on here you know stomach muscle once you receive a gay grandson you come yeah that kind of thing so he looked at me like that so those are things that they talk about it in the teachings of help the normal flow over here you have that very dumb the third elder he he's talking from anywhere with the female 17 and 18 years old around there they call it early adolescence for female or male early adolescent to get this guy's it's approximately 17 years old children about 25 around there your early adolescence right so in then sold and then anyway on latter latter adolescence right here you start talking about this one here for female is 919 and 29 around them male it's anywhere from 20 to 30 years old 26 to 30 that's his latter adolescent lead soul and when we say courtship or the wording year is a dive amenities that they did we're talking both recontact here here and then of course in the manor duck which they were raised its I guess you could say today it might be a little too overwhelming to try and conceptualize it but let me try to explain to it just a little bit maybe you might be able to grasp the concept and the concept is uh today we look at that a child would look at a big-screen TV or something like that be sitting there looking at it or a big-screen movie and that movies do it on the action and everything for them on color and everything so what's happening part of their brain is actively at work the other part of the brain remains stagnant that's one of the ways that might want to explain its own but this other way yeah I know we're talking or somebody telling a story that a part of the brain becomes activated why did what it's starting to they have to formulate their own pictures or anything all that so what's happening is that they're internalizing that story you're flowing through them and never we're talking about this like psychological term that that's $64 where you're using up their affective learning that one is emotional learning positive emotional learning so that part of the learning process when they're utilizing that part of their brain is you know they and their whole brain also and it's flowing through their emotional positive emotion becomes an emotional experience at same time as it's now their story their story they're formulating the pictures from their grandpa or grandma not possible it's becoming their story and it's implanted in their picture in it and it's implanted and their
